Is there any chance we could change the King Bill night? I know it would be a little selfish, but i go round my work friend's flat every wednesday at like 7ish, and would mean id either miss out on one or the other, or just leave the sketch meets early like i have been at the other ones. Or any other night, whatever would be mutually agreed upon. Or keep it at a Wednesday don't change anything on my account i was just wondering if anyone would be opposed to the idea?

Interesting, although what caught my eye is those life drawing sessions. Gotta be a member which costs £200 a year but then there's 48 life drawing sessions.. which equates to less than £5 per session which is pretty good! Here's a description of the session:
The Hesketh Hubbard Art Society offers both amateur and professional artists the opportunity to work from live models in untutored sessions. The Society meets at the Mall Galleries once a week, either Mondays or Fridays, and members may choose to work from four models: three ‘life’ providing 15 minute poses, 30 minute poses or a ‘long’ 2 hour pose and one clothed portrait.
Koto
January 21st, 2010, 07:43 AM
That does sound pretty good. I assumed that the only way to become a member was to submit some art and get picked!
Although this is a little worrying:
It now has about 150 members and prides itself on being London’s largest life drawing group.
we should check out the free session:
Prospective members are invited to attend one session free before deciding if they wish to apply for membership.

Yesterday was really good! Thanks for coming out.
dcorc, there are several nudes and a portrait area. You can mix and match between the four which are all varied in time, 2 hour long pose, 30mins and 15mins; I believe the portrait is held for 2 hours too. There were around 75 people attending according to the host, which is just about enough I'd say for you to get a decent view (but not a chair :p), can't imagine it on a day when all 150+ members turn up :o
Lots of varied styles of art going on and materials being used (oils, watercolours, inks, charcoal, pastel etc). Lots of experienced artists attending it seemed, plenty of opportunity to pick their brains! Definitely want to join the Mall now.

Ok, I just had more of a hunt (as it really was annoying me, especially as it wasn't an issue until my PC died recently and I had to reinstall everything) and I think this has fixed mine:
Go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES > PEN TABLET > DOUBLE CLICK DISTANCE
AND REDUCE THE SLIDER TO EITHER MEDIUM, SMALL OR IN BETWEEN.
It's something to do with photoshop thinking you want to double click and going off to search for it when your making a stroke. Anyhoo it fixed it for me I think.

Going out on a limb here...
But a colleague and I will be heading to London on March 20th and were hoping to stay into Sunday.
Wondering if there are any London CA types who might let us crash on a couch or a floor - we're just as happy with whatever we can get. We'll bring booze (or buy booze) or what have you if that'll be helpful. Or we'll make you lovely tea and bring cake. Either way, we're just a couple of ladies hoping to find someone amenable to a couple of overnight guests. We really just need a space to sleep. Otherwise it's theatre and museums and probably Chinatown for us - we're a fussless duo.
Thanks
Please email any responses as I don't check CA.org nearly as frequently as I used to. Too big a distraction! :D

Join the Hesketh Hubbard art society. Several of us are (recent/new) members there already. its about £200/year for a life class session about once a week, mostly on friday evenings, occasionally on mondays - they have various lengths of figure pose, from a series of short, to long, and a portrait sitter too.

Really good to see everyone at Nandos the other day, even if I did get there pretty late and didn't get a chance to talk to everyone. Really helps keep the momentum going knowing that you guys are living the dream already : )
By the way, is anyone looking for a studio at the moment? I've found one in Waterloo that seems to be a pretty good deal...
30sq m / 300sqf (roughly, haven't got the exact figures to hand at the mo)
5th floor
large north facing window (basically takes up the whole north wall, can see st paul's through it)
fully inclusive of electricity, internet etc.
it's in a building full of unfurnished, ex offices, so think scuzzy carpets and corridors, but they're all being rented out to artists (roughly 100 rooms in total) so might be quite a fun arty melting pot atmosphere.
All for £360 pcm, which is basically what I'm paying for half a studio at the moment. If I could find one other person up for it, that would cut my bill in half, but I could imagine 3 or even 4 people working quite happily in a room that size, depending on how much people like to jump around.
I find working in a studio away from home does really help focus my brain in to work mode during the day, plus means you don't have to mess up the house/annoy your flatmates with oil paint fumes and so forth.
Anyway, I think I've got to make a decision within the next couple of days. If anyon'e interested (or knows someone who might be) then email me at:

Cheers!

Wow, some harsh critics of Candid. I say it's fine. The first half is a variety of short poses, generally 5-15 minutes long. The second hour is set for one or two longer poses. The instructor will walk around and offer advice but you don't have to take it... there's no pressure. I say give it a try and if you like it then good, otherwise no biggy... you're not stuck to a contract or anything.

Trafalgar Square would be great (and I do walk past it twice a day every work day!) but I do need to learn the basics I guess or I'll just be carrying on with habits I've picked up teaching myself. I've done a few random classes but doing the discovery course I realised I am lacking a lot lol!

aberzeim, that painting workshop you referred to is taught by our tutor anastasia at the london atelier (www.drawpaintsculpt.com) that me and ghostbrush are at ...she's an amazing painter. it would be worth consulting her one on one, on what you can do outside of the course to bolster ur learning
coincidentally i did my foundation at byam shaw. they really dont know figure drawing at all
candid is "cheap and cheerful"...not a serious life drawing course, it is what it is.... a drop in. useful if u dont otherwise have access to a live model , and fairly cheap. i wouldnt go there again though. u can easily waste sessions and sessions doing mediocre life drawings and not improving at all. i did this at candid for a long time - good tuition is important unless ur very self directed and prolific.
while drawing in traf square mite be useful, its not really the same as drawing in a studio environment with a static nude model with a lighting rig, especially if your not yet a really confident artist

Hello all
I'm new here and quite the beginner at drawing though I've recently been going to a drop-in life drawing class at bethnal green on mondays which is quite decent:
http://www.meetup.com/LondonLifeDrawing/ It starts off with a couple 5 minutes poses, then a couple longer ones followed by an hour long one at the end.
Anyhow, the LARA drop-in sounds quite interesting, although I'd be keen for any out and about type things though I work 9-6 weekdays... weekends and evenings would suit me better (That Drawing London on Location thing also sounds cool).
Cheers!

Purrdey - if you are going to be at the V&A this friday, I'll be there too, from about 2pm. For that, bring a drawing pad, some pencils and an eraser. The V&A only allows "non-messy, dry media" - in other words you can draw in pencil, but you can't paint. Lets meet in the sculpture rooms, 22-24 (main entrance, straight through the shop; or from the tunnel entrance, straight ahead.) There are folding seats available for sketching.
For the Mall session, bring whatever you like - a drawing pad, pencils or charcoal, or a board/canvas and paints, brushes. They have lots of chairs, and some easels. Most people hold sketchpads or use a second chair - probably easiest just to come with paper and pencils or charcoal the first time, and you can see for yourself how people set up.

aberzeim: unless your actually completely shit at drawing ( koto tells me u arent) then i wouldnt worry about doing bargues. kids and yunguns were taught to do them originally because it helped prepare them for life drawing. florence academy atelier also spend a lot of timeon them but the students i know say theyre pointless. some ateliers spend weeks, months on a single bargue...ive heard of one that took a year. its ridiculous.
i did some myself , didnt learn anything. they are only really practises to improve your eye from a nonexistent to basic level .
use that time to do life drawing orimagination stuff...youll learn so much more!

Sleep:
Bargues are tedious yes, but they are very useful exercises to complete before moving to more complicated exercises such as life drawing and cast drawing.
I feel that spending months on a single one is absurd, but some people need that time to learn. Sometimes the long laborious exercise really helps you to fully understand what your learning and allows for a greater discovery and depth of understanding.
Just because something is a little boring, does ot mean its not a worthwhile exercise, I would suggest doing a few bargues and being strict with yourself about them, setting a deadline and putting in an hour a day, improvement can be made.
I am very happy i spent the time completing some bargues, it really helped me to see my own mistakes and not get precious about my drawing, enabled me to start editing my own work and breaking my thought process down.
But hey thats just me, do what ya want

sleep- thanks for the suggestion, but i need to try and attempt at least one Bargue/sightsize study to see my current limitations and strengths as of now.
Ghost has a good point about using Bargues as a fine-tuning tool... i find that though my drawing is stronger now, it doesnt necessarily mean that i am more accurate with measurements. But hey, everyone has different preferences and dislikes when it comes to choosing a painting/drawing approach, but ill still try and give it a go regardless, just to see how it works out =)

This has been posted here before (its where I found it in fact), but it might have been missed.
TL;DR its £10 for 3 hours, £12 for 4. There are sessions most days of the week.
This Wednesday it's from 6:30 at a place 5 mins from Temple Tube called George on the Strand. Seems there's 3 models to draw, Burlesque and Life Drawing, plus photography. There's no tuition, but the guy who runs it knows his lighting, and usually brings some clamp lights.
You have to sign up to see their calendar and RSVP, but they have this life drawing most days of the week.
It'd say its slightly better than Candid, its not as crowded, but then there's no tuition...

Hi UK london people. I just moved here, wanted to say hi, and see when any regular meets or life drawing type things are happening. so err, hello : )

March 26th, 2010, 12:00 PM
Hi Math82 - there is a group of us who pretty regularly meet on friday afternoons in the V&A sculpture rooms, to draw - see Koto's post, just above - and then (recently started) go on to the Mall Galleries http://www.mallgalleries.org.uk/index.php?pid=120&subid=2 for their evening life-class sessions (the Mall sessions are about £200 for a full year's membership, 48 sessions). Facilities are very good, recommended if you can get the fee together - they allow you to attend a first one for free. In practice, people are there from about 5.30pm to set up - there's one happening this evening (I'm just about to set off for it), and another on Monday evening.
If you look back though this thread you'll see there are also meetups at Nandos, midweek lifeclass meetups and other things happening, so keep an eye on the thread.

Do you guys ever go to the zoo to life draw? Id imagine that would be pretty sweet for quick animal poses and picture reference. not so much in the winter, but with the upcoming summer it would be cool to go for a day trip or something?
dcorc
March 28th, 2010, 08:56 PM
There have been zoo visits, I've not been on any myself. The trouble with the zoo is that you have to take out a mortgage or rob a bank:
http://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/visit/entry-costs,118,AR.html
:wtf:
The V&A group have been toying with the idea for a while of crossing the road and going to the Natural History Museum, as a way of studying animal anatomy and markings, and its free :) - admittedly the animals there don't move, but for some purposes that's actually an advantage.

Welcome Marine Blue!
Nandos - unfortunately people, I am moving outta London this weekend, and up to Norwich! Kinda sudden, but we've found a house to rent, and gona need the space once my twins arrive in, oooh, err...1-1/2 months?..eek! That doesn't mean, I wont be at future UK meets, just not for a while at least!
OK, there is also a Berlin Workshop in June DETAILS HERE (http://www.violentia.com/sixmorevodka/MADE-WORKSHOP-FLYER-SMALL.jpg) I got a mesage from Marko about it last night, not sure if any of you guys have heard here on CA, (too many forums to trawl through for news) Anyone interested, please click the link. It should be a good one, and about time too. Berlin is a great city, easy to get to, and you'll meet some great people! Enjoy!!!
(I'll be thinking of you all whilst I got two babies strapped to my tits! hahahaha!)

Gutted I missed the Nandos meet last week. I saw it the day after!
Shipwight- next time you're doing some pleinaire, gimme a shout! I was painting at tower of london yesterday and got a little sunburnt! hurrah for the kickass weather. It was my first time there, and I was half hoping i might bump into Koshime... Really grand sites there though. I was completely blown away.

Hey mate, I saw your google maps post, nice one. I'd like to stay where there will be quite a few other people who are going to the event. I had a look at the eastseven hostel and it looks pretty good. A lot of good reviews, 24 hour access, etc...

I would but, my hands will be full...apparently there will be a CA workshop in Amsterdam end of the year, when? its not announced. SO if you miss the MADE event, there wil be a CA one soon after.... That, I may be able to go to!

Shipwight- I was there at pretty much exactly those times as well, only I didn't go into the Tower... I just lingered around the outskirts because I didn't want to pay :P. I posted what I did in my sketchbook, if you fancy a look and a crit :) I'm planning to go again soon though, and I'd like some other grand historic spots to paint. Any suggestions?
Sleep- yep that's me! I love Anastasia. She's great. I've been working for this games company for 2 years now and I moved to london so I could find a studio position. She was telling me that you really want to get into games :) How long are you gonna be at LARA for? I'll probably be returning over the summer, if I don't go to Florence, and I'm planning on signing up for the evening life drawing sessions.
Hi Molly! Thanks for the info about the Amsterdam meet. Obviously I've not read anything about it so it's all good news! Maybe see you there! :)

Belindi - If you get a membership option, you can enter and go at will unlimited amounts of times for $40 to all 4 historic palaces. Great cheap life drawing/resource fodder if you ask me.

aefx- awesome, ya managed to secure a placing for the workshops, havent seen ya around for a while nowYeah just plunked down the 500 for it. Not sure how I feel about it, kinda worried there will be too much Comic orientated stuff(I have no interest in Comics apart from the more adult stuff like Sin City/From Hell/etc...) I think if this wasn't in Berlin in the summer time I'd only be half as interested as I am.
At anyrate, sorry I haven't been around much, my schedule has been out of control. I should be at Hesketh on Friday though, hopefully I'll see you there? Can't wait to see what you're up to now, your skills improve so fast!
