Oh yeah - although it seems that every time I'm in London this is the case...
Charing Cross Cass Arts is having a big huge sale.
Apparently it's that specific store's 25th anniversary.
I know Winsor and Newton was up to 50% off. Sometimes more.
But I've always appreciated Cass art sales...wish there was one closer to me.
The London Graphic Design also has a few odds and ends on sale. Biggest mark down seems to be easels.

Can I make 3 requests:
1. We do it before before December (end of November perhaps?)
2: There is mulled wine at some point
3: We hit the big smoke (going to be pretttty busy so could do with being close to home....it's not that I'm now a lazy Londoner who doesn't like leaving the M25!)
Perhaps the Tate Britain?-always a wealth of pretty pictures. Or maybe just a nice area of London....we could wander the City which is almost dead on a weekend and would be fun for architectural drawing (the Gerkin, Lloyds building, bank of england etc etc), pop by the Barbican and maybe head up towards Cozey coffee-shop land in Brick Lane?

Hi Dru :)
We're at the V&A again (sculptures, rooms 22-24) this friday, any time from 2pm (or so) onwards, until late (well, up til about 9.40 when they close the place).
edit - and booked my ticket for the James Jean/Tara McPherson presentation. I note from the Comica website
http://www.comicafestival.com/
Due to huge demand, more tickets have been released for the Comica ‘09 appearance of James Jean and Tara McPherson on Friday November 13th from 7pm.
If you’ve tried booking for James Jean and Tara McPherson’s Comica Conversation on Friday November 13th, you may have been unlucky as it sold out in record time. It marks James’s first major UK appearance and is attracting a huge amount of interest. Due to massive demand for both of these American superstars, the ICA have kindly relocated the event from the Nash Room to Cinema 1, their largest auditorium, more than doubling the seating capacity. So if you couldn’t book tickets before, do try again and you should find that Friday the 13th is your lucky day! More event details here.
So I'd encourage people to book tickets as soon as possible.

Hey, just a quick one. There's a recruiter by the name of Fran Mulhern on the look out for an experienced environment artist for a london based studio at the mo. Figured this would be a good place to pass the message on, though I have a feeling it's more of a 3D role they're looking for as it mentions requiring experince with UnrealEd. Anyway, if anyone knows anyone who might be looking to move, there's a £1,500 referral fee if that person gets the job. Pass it on. Fran - does the Bristol crew know about Encounters being held at Watershed this week? It's a short film festival. Not as big this year due, I'd imagine to the ongoing recession. But there still should be quite a good line up.

It's a Bristol hosted short film festival held at the Watershed each November.
Wednesday is their focus on animation day.
Good fun. If you guys want a good night out, you should check out one of the Late Lounge showings. It's the slightly odd not-for-little-kids stuff. Usually good fun

Hello UK folk,
I hope you are all well, and life is treating you good!
Is anyone going to Candid this week? and When? most likely I shall be joining you. I finally quit my evening job (hurrah!) as my freelancing is slowly taking off again and I wish to concentrate on that more....I also have my own creative project that I'm working on, that requires me to be healthy and stress free!
Ok, so, Candid and....Nandos this week??? Anyone? Anyone? :)

Rooms 22-24, the sculpture gallery (not the cast courts, which are still partly closed) - though they are just about to open (Dec 2nd) a new renaissance/medieval gallery which looks spectacular, from the sneak peek I managed to get of it.

Welcome Aberzheim! where do you hale from? and where abouts in London are you based?
London meets: usually at Nandos, in London Bridge we have a feed, a doodle and a natter about art an' stuff click here (http://www.london-se1.co.uk/restaurants/info/484/nandos):
In case you are not familiar with London and whatnot:
V&A (http://www.vam.ac.uk/)
British Museum (http://www.britishmuseum.org/)
The Tate (http://www.tate.org.uk/)
National Gallery (http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/)
The Science Museum (http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/)
The Natural history Museum (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/)
Places of interest:
Hunterian Museum in The Royal College of Sugeons (http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/museums). Lots of dead things in jars; skeletons, diseased body parts from human and animals, great place for references..
The Grant Museum (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/museums/zoology/) another little gold mine. Hundreds of animal skeletons and dead things in jars; its a tiny part of the university. When it's not busy, you can ask the curator to take a skull out of the cupboard and put on the table for you, if you want to draw it a little closer than from behind the glass cabinet!!!! Make a donation though, its one of a kind.....
We are having a Meet this coming Weds 2nd Nov, about 6.30-7.00pm @ Nando's London Bridge, you are more than welcome to join us!
People!!! Please, please look around the restuarant for us before giving up, you can't miss us, we're the pretty bunch, with sketchbooks an' such on the table...

We are usually to be found in the sculpture rooms, 22-24 - go in the main entrance, straight through the shop, and its effectively one big room going left and right, its very easy, you can't miss it. I remember Chee suggesting hiring a room at Candid Arts, getting a model and doing demos etc. There are other places we can try in London, I'll do some digging..
Ghostbrush - could you see about LARA? And if they allow folk to hire a room or whatnot for a small group? just a thought....
Shipwight/Chee - what about you? any suggestions? ANY ONE ELSE - please, do some research and post your findings...
Roll on 2010!

molly: theres a page on laras website about rentable space http://www.drawpaintsculpt.com/gallerylocationmeeting-space/easter-course/
the guy who runs lara, james, is a really nice guy im sure hed be open to your suggestions. he knows there is (in his words) a growing synergy between the digital and traditional art communities and it could be a good way to spread the word about lara ... the appetitefor thier kinda teaching is growing

I should be able to make the Fri 8th Dec - will it be V&A cast rooms?....
We usually do the sculpture gallery (main entrance, straight through the foyer and shop - or underground tunnel entrance straight through - rooms 22-24) rather than the cast courts - in fact the cast court facilities have been shut most of the time for the last 6 months.

Well, I vote for London (but then I'm cheap, and lazy :D )
LARA sounds good as a potential venue (assuming costs are appropriate) for a CA lifeclass or similar demos?

ya, shame about the cast rooms, they have been like that for a while...
I'll be giving Candid a call this week, and see what their prices are. Its easier to get to than LARA; I'm thinking if we do have a meet in London, and access for those who do not live here. Also, Candid is surrounded by resturants etc and easy access to Hostels if people stay over night...

OMG - that LARA website is so fucking annoying! The 'Enquiry Form' links straight to the 'Course Enquiry Form' and the contact page goes straight to a sculpting artist. The 'contact' area has no details for contacting administration, and the Rent Space/Hire area, has no link to contact admin for that! Jesus H Christ! how the fuck does one contact anyone for anything, besides course info? I'm getting well fucked off with it! GRRR!!!

As for some useful information, I won't be at the v&a this week as it's first friday and I'm going to take advantage of the late hours to see the Turner exhibit at Tate Britain.

I was looking for some life drawing classes in shoreditch when I stumbled upon this sketch meetup group. (http://www.meetup.com/Drawing-London-on-Location/) Their next meetup sounds pretty cool:
Thanks to Julia, we have permission to draw in the members room at the top of the Royal Festival Hall from 11am - 1pm on Sat 9 Jan. This room has some great views towards the London Eye, across the Thames, Hungerford Bridge and towards St Paul's. Afterwards we could perhaps try some portrait sketching, there are plenty of places in the main building to sit. Read more
They sometimes hire models too!
We also occasionally arrange to hire a life model for life drawing sessions, but this is not regular, and only happens according to how many group members are available and interested. We try to get about 4-6 people together for this is keeps costs nice and low without spoiling the atmosphere of the session
I think we need to infiltrate this group :o... it's short notice but anybody up for checking this out?
CrimsonSnake suggested Cambridge for the next UK meet awhile ago. I'd be up for that since I've never been :).
Forgot it was Tate Britain's late opening day, do people want to head to the V&A or Tate this Friday?

January 7th, 2010, 07:37 AM
I'm easy-going, whichever people prefer, for the friday meet, V&A or Tate Britain.
I note the sketch-meetup at the RFH on Sat 9th, they have 32 people who say they're going and another 16 possibles, and they wanted RSVPs by the 6th, so I'm not sure that just turning up would be a good idea, but we could sign up and go to subsequent ones.
Cambridge sounds good for a UK meet :)

I've signed up, it seems I can also bring guests!
I'm sure if we confirm we're coming today it'll be okay, it sounds like they just need to let them know of an approximation.
32+ people would be an army! That seems a little optimistic going by the number of attendees from last meets though.

Hey, thanks guys, I had a really good time :)
Unfortunately you might remember my knee getting bad - well it got worse, a lot worse. I need to rest it for a while, which means no atelier for this model session. I'll begin the Atelier in a couple of weeks hopefully, when its better and I've had blood tests and a season ticket et al. I might be able to make next friday though.

Hey CrimsonSnake, I'm based in Cambridge as well. I tried out this group (http://www.meetup.com/Cambridge-Pub-Art/) once at the end of last year. While it was nice and relaxed I couldn't help but feel that the pub environment was a bit boring after a while so I suggested that we could do some sketching/walking around Cambridge in the new year.
It would be nice to meet some more people who are really into their concept art/illustration. :)

Hey applecheeks,
I noticed that group about a month ago but it didn't really sound like my thing. Like you, I'd rather wonder around Cambridge than sit in a pub for a few hours. But I'll think about coming along if they do decide to get out of the pub one in a while.

oooh I've been blessed by the double post god!
Might as well put something interesting here
from Today's Inspiration (http://todaysinspiration.blogspot.com/2010/01/al-dorne-on-importance-of-drawing.html):
"I drew every sculpture and piece of armour in the place. I even copied the figures on the Grecian urns. I played hookey from school and would go to the museum every Monday and Friday for over two years. I found out later that my teachers knew all the time what I was doing and condoned it. Actually I was probably the youngest person ever to be given a sketching permit by the Met."

Damn, when I used to cut school I sat at home watching supermarket sweep and Neighbours :/
