Oops! I've been the Marvelous Magnificent invisible Mazz for a little while - was applying for a paid training thing that I'm not going to get as over 700people have applied for 2 spaces 8-O
Molly - I'm sure I mentioned wacky races in my road trip plan on t'other thread? Anyway I don't really have any specific plan per se, Don't even know if I can afford it - even my work at the pub has pretty much dried up so its now a debate between wether to try and find 9-5 supermarket/office work here or try and head towards a life in the city sometime soon...
You mentioned the Art Academy - Whats it like? I stumbled across the website the other day and was seriously considering applying for the painting certificate ( if I can get a rent paying london job). That way I could hopefully keep developing the art stuff whilst getting back in to the city action ;)

I'd really like to go to the CA workshop. Never been to one.
Am currently Umming and Ahhing over it.
Reasons:
- Money (As a student, it's scarce)
- Will it be nice and social or will I end up hiding alone in a corner ;)
- Am somewhat intimidated
Also, mentioned a few pages back was the idea of hiring a place and model and spending a whole saturday life drawing
Definately something I'd like to do.

same as that vaughany, i'm not entirely sure what the standard expected at the work shops is, and also as much fun as it looks, i'd not want to be on my bates the whole time skulking about like a loner.
any ideas when they might confirm germany ? cos flights would be cheaper sooner
Freddy Scribbles
May 19th, 2009, 05:38 PM
We could just collect all the "loners" and skulk together making amazing art...and skulking...
This looks amazing, but I'm not sure I'll still be in the UK. Thinking about heading back to Los Angeles since there seems to be better and more learning opportunities post-university.
And money may be a little tight. Already heading to Italy with Vilppu in June and another trip in August just might break the bank. But on the other hand...I'd love to meet the whole lot of you because y'all sound pretty groovy...even if you are skulkers. I am a fellow skulker.
but gods, esp. art gods, are scary...and awesome. but still scary

Its as social as you make it.
If you don't say hi to anyone or you walk around afraid then you won't get as much out of it. Share a room with some fellow CA'ers you haven't met is one of the best ways to make new friends.
Anyways. Dinner.
P.s I remember Wacky Races Moll haha =)

Summer time = Preparing Portfolio for the workshop :)
I cannot wait!!!
So are we all planning on traveling in a group? It would be good for me as I'm not the most confident person when it comes to traveling alone. Me and Danny almost got lost in San Fran and that was with two of us.
I had a dream about the workshop last night.. I didn't bring any clothes to change into, so I spent half the dream looking for a clothes store and Marko had Dreadlocks. Dreams are so odd sometimes.

Londoners...
just wondering if all fancy getting together on friday evenings at the nation gallery(open till 9.30 i think) with sketchbooks and materials..a drink afterwards so everybody could share their drawings ...
any takers?
if you want to get hold of me give me a bell 07736381882 or email jrpess@hotmail.co.uk/ respond to this post..
also...
life drawing is taking place at the london atelier of representational art (LARA) on wednesday evenings if any of you are interested... details are on www.drawpaintsculpt.com - its quick sketches nothing more than half an hour, mostly standing poses - get a great variety of models - and if we have more takes there is certainly room for two.
read a little further up the post that you guys maybe looking for a space to hire a model over the weekend..would have to confirm with James (atelier's principal)...but i am pretty sure he would be willing to let you use the studio for next to nothing for an afternoon in the week/the weekend...we have a good set up , north facing skylight - so the light will be constant

Hey Folks...
Just wanted to let you know that there will be an upcoming media event in Bristol on 16 June 2009.
Although it's primary function is to showcase the works completed by the recent post-graduate students on the University of the West of England's Animation course, we're hoping it will also be a fabulous local-industry meet and greet with folks like Dave Borthwick, Derek Hayes and some of the fine people from Films at 59 in attendance.
Details are as follows:
First Look
UWE Post Graduate Animation Premier
16 June 2009
Hen and Chicken
210 North Street, Bristol
7:30pm - 10:00pm
Upstairs
It's hopefully going to be similar to Aardman's sponsored Tuesday night screenings with the acknowledgment that these are still student films by a mixed group of professionals and amateurs and a few who've just discovered animation. However, there are some fabulous films, and I know everyone's worked hard and is excited about the show.
So if you can make it, awesome. Come for a cider and to say hullo.
I won't be there unfortunately - I have another work obligation elsewhere. But there will be some fabulous UWE folks there. And it should be a good evening.
-Freddy

Molly - he does a working tour to Europe every year. Turns out I worked in the same building as he teaches without knowing it even though I cut through his side of the building to get to the parking lot on a regular basis when I was still in LA. UGH. Didn't know it! UGH!
So after flitting around here, I looked up Vilppu which is when I made this discovery and also noticed he had a working tour. Sent it to my mom and said...isn't that neat. And really, figured that was the end of that. Just because we send emails like that back and forth. Got an email back saying - "Happy graduation. Book your ticket and have fun in Italy." But he does them every year. It's a bit embarrassing really. My mom will probably make more money in one year than I can ever expect to make in three. I love her and appreciate the generosity but sometimes...there's always that feeling of dread and shame that you'll never be able to repay the favour. Oh well. C'est la vie. Work hard. Earn money. Make good on what you've got. Guess that's the best repayment at the moment.
Can you tell I've got a bit of a guilt complex about my slightly better than middle class status? especially as an artist...currently an unemployed artist...eep.
Incidentally...Germany will depend entirely on whether I 1. stay in England 2. Have enough money saved away from past jobs

Hi Fran. I am on the animation course, but I don't know Rob. I came to UWE on the post-graduate program and due to work loads and really different scheduling, my class seldom if ever runs into the undergraduate animation students.
It's unfortunate because it could be nice to get folks on the same page, but it's not overly practical due to scheduling issues. Most of our lectures were in the evening because we had several part-time students who worked full time elsewhere. Good times.
I've actually been done and all graduated since February. Hurray!
job hunting sucks though.

it took me by suprise when she mentioned conceptart.org
it took me by alot more suprise when she said he knew someone called molly.
apparently her sons name is harry wormald...a quick search through ca yeilded that he posts under the name hazaeon. whats funny is that i might even have met this guy at a meet once...and now completely randomly renting a room out to his mum. small world

I have been invited to a random life drawing event by one of my uni friends tomorrow night. I wont be in London but if anyones interested its being put on by a student at Camberwell and costs £3 - it sounds a bit crazy fine art to me but for 3 squidlets might be worth heading along anyway if you're available :)
If you're interested contact me and I'll forward your details to Chloe/Billie - you need to phone her when you get there so she can let you in, apparently the uni is a bit high security lol.

I try to get to the National Gallery (or other museums/galleries - the 19thC gallery of portrait paintings and busts at the NPG is also a good resource, as are the cast court and sculpture galleries at the V&A) to sketch, most friday afternoons/evenings. I believe it is useful to draw from paintings and sculptures, both as a more active exercise in looking, and also as a way of practicing fundamentals, particularly improving accuracy in placement and proportion, and rendering form in value. Having a subject that doesn't move and allows you to take your time may be more valuable than (or an excellent addition to) the common short-pose lifeclasses, particularly if you currently have problems in achieving reasonably accurate proportions/form rapidly in the life-class environment.
Yesterday, I met up with JRP (who posted about this a page or two back - and didn't seem to get much response here :( ).
I'd invite Shed (who also posted about wanting to meet up) and anyone else who would like to do so, to meet up with JRP and myself at the National Gallery next Friday, any time from 1.45pm onwards for the afternoon and evening, the idea being that we sketch and discuss. We're both interested in the more "classical"/traditional end of techniques and training, so could be of help if you are looking for input on these sorts of approaches. All levels welcome.
Post here or PM me if you are interested, it would be good if we could make this a regular thing.
(I'd also add that organisation of meetings in this thread seems to be a bit (i) chaotic; and (ii) telegraphic - by which I mean that its impossible to tell where/when/whether most of the proposed meetings here are actually occurring - hence I thought its easiest to cut through that and say "National Galley, fridays, 1.45pm and onwards til gallery/pub closing time" so that its clear, unequivocal, and unambiguous. ALL welcome. PM me for contact details).

Hello UK Folk, you are invited to my art studios private view Friday 19th June, 6.30pm - until very late! As well as art, there will be music and drink too, so if you can make it, please pop down and show your support!
This exhibition is a showcase of the individual artists who work and live in the S.E London area.
From painting to photography, print work and installations, each artist brings something
new and unique to the proverbial 'table'.
As well as viewing some eclectic art, we will be holding an auction with work donated by the artists.
All money made will be going to the upkeep of our studios and our extortionate utility bills!

Heya UK people :] I just arrived to London a couple of days ago and I'm curious to know if there are any meet-ups still existing around this area ? hehe
I'm been looking through this thread quickly and couldn't find anything about any regular meetups.. so if anyone's up for some drawing
it would be great to know ;)
thanks :]

I think I sent everyone expressing an interest a PM with my mobile number? :)
I'm intending to be there from about 1.30PM, and initially I'll be in rooms 23/24, where the Rembrandts are. (I'm the short middle-aged guy who looks all too much like Homer Simpson :D - though not quite so yellow - I'll have a sketchpad and a small pair of binoculars).
Since Molly's having an open studio, people might want to go on to that in the evening? I'm not sure if I'll stay on at the NG in the evening, or go on, I'll probably "play it by ear" depending on how many others I hear from or turn up, and what any others want to do? I'm keen that we try to make the NG thing a regular event for anyone who wants to drop in and meet up with others.

OK - I guess I should say I'm not expecting that others all turn up at 1.30 too - my thought was whatever time suited, and sketch for blocks of perhaps something like one-two hours per subject, and have periods where we get together and discuss? But very open to suggestions as to what others want to do, how to make best use of the time/opportunity?

i dont think i can actually justify spending that amount of money on the workshop, as im not that much into concept art, or traditional stuff like oil painting, so im not sure what i would actually do when i got there. Main reason i wanted to go was to hang out with you guys! I can do that much cheaper in the UK at london meets etc i guess, so atm i very much doubt i will be going to this one, perhaps the next if i get more interested in one of the two

It was great meeting up with Dile, Koto Stomp, and (briefly) Call0ps, last friday - sorry we missed out on Molly's open studio, we completely lost track of time.
This week I'm hoping we can have a meeting again, I'll be in the National Gallery from about 1.45/2pm, I'll be sketching the Caravaggios at first (Supper at Emmaus, probably) (Short fat middle-aged bloke - me, I mean, not Caravaggio :D)

I've already put a date out there for a possible meet to fit in with TheGnoll's visit. Are you guys still cool with Saturday 18th July? Maybe Oxford again, though I dunno if anything cool's going on there yet. I've had a couple of confirmations, just mentioning it again to see who else is up for it.
If enough people respond then I'll chuck the details up here and on FaceBook within the next week or two. If you CAN make the meet, either shout out or 'Thank' this post or something.

I'm trying to get a regular meeting going at the National Gallery in London on Friday afternoons and evenings - I'll be there from about 1.45/2pm, and will stay until closing time (9pm) (see my earlier posts in the thread over the last 2 or 3 pages) - others are welcome to drop in at any point and meet up with me and with each other. The intention is to do sketches for perhaps 1 - 2 hours, and then come together and gently mutually critique - and help each other to improve drawing skills. Please join us if you can.

I understand what your saying. You could just go to hang out? I did when Prague was on. I stayed in a hostel with two friends of mine, and we went sightseeing during the day, and met up with folk in the evening. Berlin (if the w/s is going to be there) is a fantastic city, easy to navigate around, with a rustic atmosphere. I love Berlin, and hope they do have the w/s there. But, I'm not saying you should go - s'up to you petal, but its always good to go see a European city...

The V&A and it's staff were awesome. I really enjoyed the Bargue Drawings.
The Waterhouse exhibition is awesome. I had forgotten what a masterly painter he was. The way he handles his paint with all those different objects, metals and materials. His composition too.
Also called at the National Gallery to catch a few favourites. Then the little art shop behind, Cass Arts. They were having a sale as usual. Glad that was the last place I went because I was weighed down supplies after that!
So I had a wicked time.

@dcorc - I've never seen someone get told off so many times in a Gallery, I think you must hold a world record or something!
LOL - the idiot guards find me scary, because I want to actually look at the art. They're used to zombie sheeple drifting through, who spend more time reading the little plaques than looking at the actual paintings. "No, we only allow people to have seats for talks, or if they're disabled, not to sketch with.", "Stand away from that painting" (my hand was a foot away from it), "Do those binoculars contain a camera" (err, no, that's why we've spent the last hour sitting here drawing the paintings). "You've got to leave now - the gallery closes at 9pm" (which is why they're throwing everyone out at 8.45 - but the cafe's open late )
You should see them when I stand in front of one painting for 30 mins examining it - they start to gather, getting anxious (presumably expecting that I'm going to attack it with a knife, or daub it with a large tube of phthalo blue :D). You may gather I'm not impressed by the staff at the NG :D (I suspect most of them really aspire to be prison guards)

starting at 10am in G&Ds on cowley road (thats a different one to the one at your oxford meet) we're gonna head into town sketching all the way.
the guy whose organising it has set up a google map thing with an itinery (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=104275707703136273117.00046d7ca934aa22b041a&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=51.750521,-1.250896&spn=0.012142,0.027595&z=15) of where we'll be at different times so you can catch up with the sketch-mass at any time during the day

According to Google maps, about 14 mins. I only picked it 'cause that's where we met up last time and no one had suggested another place otherwise. Still, ice cream ownz. :)
EDIT: I'll be arriving at Oxford around 11:35AM and should be at the ice cream parlour before 12PM. The 11AM meet-up time isn't super strict anyway - just gives decent leeway for people to stroll in and gather up before heading to some other place.

Alex - Koto_Stomp and I, and various others, are meeting up on friday afternoons and evenings as a regular thing, in central London galleries/museums to sketch from paintings and sculptures. Currently we are using the sculpture rooms at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Bring a pad and some pencils.
Its possible we may also do some plein-air oil-painting in central london parks etc. (I can bring some supplies, enough for 2 or 3 people to work with, and quickly introduce people to the basics if they haven't oil-painted before).
We'll post each week to remind people its happening, and where - all are welcome to join, at all levels of experience.

GhostbrushI almost wish I lived in Manchester now just for the fun of a car adventure ;) I'm patently long overdue for a roadtrip!
Anyone think someday we could hire a minibus/travel in convoy and do some kind of CA Camping Roadtrip for a few days? A bunch of us from uni did this summer before last and it was quite fun to hang out for a week with a bunch of artists in a different environment.
Oh and Ship, I'm curious, with that walk being guided will there be much time for sketching the interesting things or will it be a continuous walk with not much chance to stop?
Looking forward to seeing you all again on Saturday :)

Ben dude a lift is fine by me, to be there for 11 would mean leaving at 8 at the very latest, but most likely earlier as I have little to no idea how to get that at this point :D will PM u tomorrow once I worked out when I can realistically leave to get us there on time (gotta factor in my car being terribly mental at the best of times)

Wheeeee, meet soon. ^_^
Just to let you guys know that the 11am start isn't uber strict - just thought it'd allow about an hour or so leeway for people to stroll in in time to gather up and check out museums etc. before hunger strikes at lunch time.
The earliest train I could book will get me to Oxford around 11:35am, so unless I get horribly lost, I should manage to get to the parlour by noon. :)
See you soon!

...an awesome art supplies shop...
London-wide, there are quite a few good shops. There are several branches of Cass Art (very good prices on a lot of stuff, competitive with online discounted prices), including one very close to Leicester Square tube station and the National and National Portrait Galleries. There's Atlantis Art which is a great big warehouse of a place near the Whitechapel Gallery; and there are Cornelissens (near the British Museum) and AP Fitzpatrick (also near the Whitechapel) which are both great for more unusual materials (all sorts of weird and wonderful oil-painting mediums, dry pigments so you can make your own paint, and so on). Lots of others, too, but those are the ones I mainly buy from.

http://www.atlantisart.co.uk/
http://www.cornelissen.co.uk/
http://www.apfitzpatrick.co.uk/
I also buy stuff online though, as its often cheaper.
