Cool sketches mark! and plantman those are awesome environments! (are they 3d max and with painting? just painting or just 3d max?)

Yep they are simple Maya renders. That gets the perspective and lighting correct. Then painted over.

Really enjoyed the meet at the hunterian and all that last weekend. Nice to talk to some of you.

And now a quick request for the help of you nice lovely people :)

something that you other UK, especially London, people might be able to help me with:

I'm a London student on a graphics course and over the summer we have to spend at least 2 weeks doing a work placement in a proffessional design-related environment.

What I'd really like to do is find a studio that does Illustration or concept art type work which might consider taking students for work placements.
I'm compiling a list of places to try getting in touch with and I just thought that some of the people on here might know some places which would be friendly.

So, if any of you nice people out there know of some studio or agency or something which might consider taking a student in for a short period, it would REALLY help me.

A PM or email (link in sig) with some advice would make my day

Cheers,
Ben

Hello everyone. I'm new here, just joined today and still finding my way around the place, so unfortunately I haven't added much to my profile yet. Anyway, I'm a practicing artist from Newcastle upon Tyne, though I'm pretty new on the scene and only started selling and exhibiting work at the start of this year, so still finding my way around in that respect too.

I was just wondering how you join the groups? Do you just come in and say hello or do you have to register or something? I haven't really had a good chance to look around the whole site yet.

Oh and is anyone here from the North East?

I moved to London some time ago and would like to ask if there are any good (or cheap or both) life drawing classes in the area (particulary NW/Central)?
Preferably on Sundays or Mon-Tue-Wed.

Thanks Smarty, nice to meet you, Oh and everyone else, from up North or anywhere else in the uk.

Anyway, Really looking for some meets up north. I tend to do a lot of preview parties but not many workshops or sketch meets, as most other artists I know just don't have the time, or the inclanation. So basically looking for people in this area who do that really. So if anyones organising any, let me know and hopefully, if I have some free time, it would be great to attend. Also does anyone know of any new artist groups in The north east? not including any too well known ones like the stuckists etc...

ha violet, when i'm not in bristol I'm northeast.. where aobuts are you? theirs not a lot of that sort of thing up their as far as i know.

I'm just outside of Newcastle, about 10 mins away from the city centre. Yeah there doesn't seem to be a great deal. I know they have stuff on at the baltic etc, but they tend to be more gallery based stuff... You know, like contributing to other artists exhibitions etc...

I'm looking more for people to just do general art based stuff with, like sketching etc. Or groups in the area which aren't all from the same gallery/background etc (so their basically more imparial, not only into one way of thinking/doing things).

Basically I want to try new stuff, not get too stuck in one type of art scene, or genre of art. As i'm quite tied to my style already which I find a bit restrictive sometimes. As after a while people tend to expect you to make one type of art and get a bit upset when you start to deviate away from it.

Thing is it's so time consuming having to search through endless group manifesto's etc to find that their either crazy lol ! or have completely different values to yourself. So I thought I'd give here a try as it seems more open and relaxed.

Hello Reign, the candid arts drop in class is pretty good about having the supplies you need so you can just show up without having to bring anything. I think it's .25 for each sheet of paper and each piece of charcoal. Or if you like you can just bring pencil and a note book, it's up to you really, different people do different things(water colour, charcoal, pencil, pen,etc...).

Pao: That sounds great, I'll have to see if I can keep the 21st free.

Chee, man... Love you an all, but at least some links to these places?..tut.. :) Oh, Venues. CandidArts seems like the most appropriate place for an informal gathering, and the Angel area has some hostels.
Another place I would also suggest is The Albany (http://www.thealbany.org.uk/index.php) where I work. It has multiple rooms, cafe and main theatre, which would be perfect for demos and a chilled out atmosphere. LINK HERE (http://www.thealbany.org.uk/hireus.php) check out the photo of the main theatre...

Pao - March 21st sounds cool with me too! - what would you like to draw? landscapes? Buildings? People? Places? I could recommend places, just need to know what your after...

Naomi - cant make Fri, as I'm working all day and in the evening. I'm working for this organisation, that helps people with learning difficulties. Apparently, theres a games/art room, and I'm in there. Should be easy and fun...I love being freelance! sorry, pointless happy rant!

Reign - what days are you thinking of going to Candid arts? If you go this wednesday, I'll make sure I'm there :) And dont worry, the tutor usually decides whats going on in the class; its just a matter of you turning up and drawing. Reign, like aefx has suggested, bring a sketchbook and pencils etc and see how you go from there. Theres no rush and gradually, you will become more comfortable with what you want to do.

aefx - I think theres a meeting tonight at the studio. Theres a board there to write ideas on for this group show. I made a suggestion that we produce work of our own, and exhibit as a collective of artists instead of a ground subject. I'm going tonight, so if you don't no worries. I'll 'take notes' as they say...

Yeah Tuesdays are the one day a week that I absolutely cannot make. Lemme know what they say though, some interesting things in the works! I'm going to try and get time to make a run this week to get Oil supplies and what not. What was the supplies store you recommended, Angel something or other?

Hello, happy than the idear make your interest, well i just think about a problem, is the Reloading of computer, if we are 10 for exemple i don't know how we could reload all laptop, i'm studying far from London so i don't know if it's possible in Pub or mac donald or anything else ?

Here is the actually list .

-Ezidof
-Andreewallin ( ? )
-Chupacubra
-Pao
-molly ( ? )
-Void ( ? )
-aefx ( ? )

We are already 8, and imagine other people will come too, so really need to find a way to reaload all laptop :p

Naomi > yea hope you could come : ))))))) just before you vacation

Molly > yea cool, i was thinking like park, building, landscape, people on pub, it depend what you prefer ? if we are a lot we can make few teams ? and meet every 2 hours to reaload laptop .. don't know yet how organising it.

The best maybe should be to meet in Park ( like the last meet ) quite big place, with street, building, trees, an few people on the street, look perfect for practicing.

I tried the tutored one last Tuesday -- was fun, but it was my first real class (I'm self-taught), so I wasn't as relaxed as I could be. I'm thinking of going again.

Who else goes? Is the Wednesday one much different from the Tuesday? Which has a higher turnout?

hey Folks,

Vaughny Boy and I were at Candid last night, not sure if other folk were too, but I'm beginning to get pissed off with the choice of models! (RANT)
Nothing wrong with drawing the larger figure, but when they can't pose for gestures/warm ups/whatever you wanna call it, it becomes rather annoying, as there is no real 'variety' in their poses....*breathe*

Aefx - the group show will be an open subject, show work that is 'you' or what it is you produce in the studio etc etc...I think a proposal is needed, of some sort. Gillian will email minutes to everyone. Also, we've all been asked to keep an eye out for warehouses or derelict buildings we can take over if we have to leave Faircharm est. We are not counting on the re-development next to the BirdsNest, its a great idea, but not one that we can rely on in the next 3 months...

Pao - lets NOT meet in Mac Donalds, thats just the last place I will enter whilst I'm alive! :) ...Meeting in a Park is fine, if the weather allows. Finding somewhere to recharge your laptop, may be difficult. Not all pubs have there plug sockets on show for the public. It would be best if you knew what you wanted to draw, then I can suggest a few places.

Canary Wharf - this area has plenty of buildings to draw, shops, cafes - BUT permission is needed to draw in some areas due to security...
St James Park - not much there, just grass...
Greenwich/Greenwich Park - great view of London from top of the hill...
Hyde Park,
Regents Park,
Brick Lane, -plenty of bars that can hold a large amount of people, 1001 Cafe, Vibe Bar, 93ft East, food courts etc- also in this area Smithfield Market, The City...
South Bank - resturants, Royal Festival Hall, I think, has an area where people can congregate and stuff...
The British Museum that area under the new roof is pretty cool, if we get a table...not sure about poer sources...
St Pauls, Tate Modern, Tower Bridge,
Camden Town - markets, bars, pubs - the Stable Market has some interesting architecture and interesting people...:)

Bricklane and Camden are a favourite choice; kinda retro, ecclectic, interesting. Canary Wharf and Greenwich park too. But weather depending...

Some of you other folks, any suggestions would help immensley...:)

we definitly need a place to recharge our laptops, could be something else than macdo, i know here in camb some starbucks got power sockets for customers, i guess some other cafe got some as well, or kfc, burger king... hehe. lots of smelly places i know.
if someone knew one place like that, it would pretty much help on the destination to go. if not well, lets see, we`ll find something anyway
other than that, we`ll need some decent seats like bench or something, so if the place is great but nowhere to sit, we may be disappointed ;)

- Well, I assume that the cafes/bars in Brick Lane and Camden would have power sockets for laptops, seeing as its the norm nowadays to be sitting with a laptop and cuppa coffee...I'll need to do some research to make sure...

PAO, Alyssa Milano - I would rather NOT be hanging out in MacD's or Burger King or any fast food joint, as they are smelly, and not the kinda place you'd find inspiration. I am actually dead against it! honestly, why would ya want to hang there? :)

Camden Town is one place we have not been too, there is plenty of places to hang out, and plenty of weird people to draw. We could meet at Camden Town tube station, then head towards the lock and find somewhere to sit? Up to you guys. You ALL need to suggest somewhere of interest, or just somewhere you havent been before...
WiFi- Hotspots in Camden click here... (http://btopenzone.hotspot-directory.com/results.php?txtQuick=NW1%209LS&z=9&radRoaming=1)

Sean - ya, I should email Ann and say something. Its annoying cos when you look at your sketchbook of life drawings done at Candid, the models and poses are all the same, because the models is too fat and unfit to pose properly - sorry, I'm not a 'fattist' just want decent models that can move well... What are the models like on Monday - Weds????

I was there, I was gonna come over and say hi in the interval but when things went downhill with the model I didn't really get the chance.

I hope that she was ok.

Camden sketchmeet sounds cool. I might not bother with bringing the old laptop though.

shipwight
March 19th, 2009, 05:51 AM
The model was 31 weeks, and the hot heat of the lights, strain of keeping into position for a while, probably with resultant physiological anaemia of pregnancy, resulted in loss of normal blood pressure to the circulatory system and brain - resulting in the model in a non responsive state which abated, once she was laid in a recovery position with a triangular wedge to allieviate the compression of the gravid uterus off the IVC.

For those interested, this is called Aortocaval compression, and a known major cause of maternal hypotension especially near term. During caesarean delivery, you find various anaesthetist applying a small triangular wedge pillow either below the Right pelvis or R lumbar region. This is to help minimize hypotension secondary to further decrease in blood pressure following a spinal or combined spinal epidural for preperation of delivery of the fetus.

Wow, that was a more in depth account of what happened than I had anticipated, good thing there was a doctor in the house :) At anyrate hopefully she's alright now I can imagine that was a pretty scary situation. Speaking of scary situations, ship was that fire yesterday near your office at all?

Cool, about the meet up on 21st Sat - Just some wise words, Camden gets extremely busy on the weekends and everything is quite close together, not really much space. Especially if the weather is like it is today (sunny) and you want to sit outside and paint with laptops, I would guess its gonna be a little packed. There are no benches only places for when you eat. (unless you go inside a bar/cafe obviously)
Its a really great place for sketchbook work, so much variation and culture, and if you do some exploring you'll find some cool indoor/outdoor markets with carved/decorated walls.

South Bank is the opposite, wide open spaces, with large buildings and the Thames river, it can still get busy in parts but you are able to sit back and watch it all from a distance. There are still pubs/bars along the river.
So..
Maybe a suggestion, start at London bridge underground

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?near=tower+bridge%2C+lnodon&q=tower+bridge+london+maps&f=p&btnG=Search+Maps&rl=1

and follow the river all the way along until you end up to the London eye. Stopping at anything of interest. Along the way there are - boats, water, large buildings close and in the distance, tate museum, large bridges, tourists, street performers, London eye, large green area.

About some of the museums - some museums do not allow you to take photographs so I am certain that they will probably not allow you to use laptops also. I know that the Tate and the British museum do not allow photograph. The natural history museum (they have many dinosaurs, stuffed animals/reptiles/water mammals) in knightsbridge does allow photography, so probably could use laptops there.
Anyway, saying all that, Im not sure if I am coming yet, but if I do I can help people get around if needed.

CAMDEN Or LONDON BRIDGE?

London Bridge sounds cool with me. We could do as Ezidof suggested, and head towards the London Eye, maybe, take the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf and draw there. BUT it WILL be windy....just as long as we dont end up in SoHo again...

Camden I agree with Ezidof, Camden does get busy. And finding somewhere to sit, with laptops and power etc is going to be tough regardless of where we go. But if you draw in your sketchbook it will be easier. The Lock has some nice places to hang out....

daveneale
March 20th, 2009, 09:24 AM
Do London bridge;)....I've been wanting to sketch at Canary wharf for ages now too. There's the Borough market for good lunch-time food, and if people wanted to charge laptops and we're around by the Tate my place it about 2 mins walk away. The area around the BFI has some cool blocky architecture, there are all the buskers along the south bank, a few mini park areas, cool bridges/tunnels, there's also some cool architecture and sweet passages just across the river which would be quick and easy to get to (it's also super quiet over there on the weekend as long as you keep off the strand. There's also the royal courts of justice, and if people wanted the whole scraper experience without the trip to Canary Wharf there's always the gherkin and the Lloyds buildings just across the river. Aaaaalso St Katherines docks is beautiful in the sun (Next to tower bridge). I'm sure I could think of some other stuff depending on what people are after(I wander the area a fair amount).

Molly
March 20th, 2009, 09:34 AM
Hay Dave - thats sounds like a plan! Canary Wharf is a cool place to draw, and it wont be busy. I'm sure there are some cafes in there too where you guys can charge yer laptops.

Hello UK folks...

Just a small rant, but has anyone looked through some of the portfolio's in the Art Registration forum?..... I mean....honestly.... I could get banned for saying this, but some of the 'folio's are lame. Worst still, the work in the majority are sketches and stuff that could've been put into a personal sketchthread.
Dont get me wrong about the Art Registry thang, I think its a great idea for the whole community....but if your folio is not up to scratch, the possibilities of someone stealing/using work, is well, non-existant.
I thought, being registered as a member of this here forum, was enough. We all have Sketchbook threads, posted a Finally Finished thread, the Gallery section - these count too right?....But how many professionals have posted in there? Go look, there aint many...

Also, what should come first, your art work or toasting a friends new job?
Seriously, I just got blanked on FB, because, at the last minute, my friend organised a 'girlie' night on Friday to toast her new job, and I already made plans to finish a portrait of a friend of mine that night.(none of these girls are artists, and all work in the corporate/media industry)
I'd rather finish the portrait. Now, I feel bad if I dont go, but I have to be true to myself, and put my art first...

Sorry, Im like well pissed of atm...

the whole point of the registry forum is that independant of skilll level everyone should have the chance to register thier work . these people otherwise wouldnt be able to post in the finally finished forum and thier work isnt quite sketchbook material. we don't all have sketchbooks or finished threads. i imagine the concept of a registry forum is a lot more accessible to newbies who dont necessarily frequent CA but still want to register thier workz

@art vs. party
well you could paint on another day!i dontthink it would compromise your artistic integrity as much as you think . but then again thats rude to the person u already planned to paint so id just make a point of telling ur jobbie friend that youd already planned something so you're busy.....

Heya,

'Big' meets tend to be on weekends when most people are off work (they're not very frequent though), but the Londoners usually meet up in the evening during the week for life drawing. A lot of them have been posting but don't seem to have caught your message so maybe this'll give it a boost. :)

Hi Guys!
A pub that Im working in (Paradise, in NW London) is hosting some funky (night) life drawing classes (Dr Sketchy is the name or something like that).Though you may be interested in it. Here is the link: http://www.drsketchylondon.co.uk/
I usually go to candid arts (good stuff, thanks for sharing!) but on this monday Im definitely checking this one out.

It might be cool to check out a new life drawing place for sure

Reign
April 4th, 2009, 07:29 AM
Well, I didn't make it clear in first post, but it's not exactly a new life drawing place, as it is a one time gig. And it's suppoused to be something slightly different than an ordinary classes, they advertise it as "life drawing and burlesque". Not sure what it means in practice, but since it is a pub, then music and fully stocked bar behind your back are the two most obvious additions.

Well, as I said I have no idea how it actually looks like, but judging from the photos from previous events (http://www.drsketchylondon.co.uk/gallery.html) there seems to be some amount of traditional posing. It probably won't be the most productive drawing session, but it looks like fun.
Just a little spice to break the "5m,5m,5m,5m,20m,20m,break,40 min sit pose" routine :)

i went to doctor sketchys a few months back, won the end of night competition :)

dont want to burst ur bubble but i didnt like it myself- the models are burlesque dancers, not models. and the one i had was getting progressively more drunk as the nigth went on, wouldnt sit still for a second- the poses are all like 1,2 mins and the longest is 15 iirc and the focus is on expressive/funny drawing so you wont learn anything except how to draw someone without looking at them. its not for artists, its for people who want to have a drink and a bit of fun and its certainly not worth the £10 or so they charge

that being said, it might be worth going once just for the experience...it might just be right up ur alley. plus its a "relaunch" so it might be different to how i experienced it

on another note ill be in bristol tomorrow, staying over with fran or someone. itd be nice to see some bristol faces in the evening , give me a little crit on my portfolio before my interview on monday XXXXX

Saturday 25th April

Ok, i would suggest the meeting place should be near the station or something to make it easier, previously when theres been saturday bristol meets ( like 2 years ago or something), everyone met at the coffee shop at the bottom of the slope on the right when you exit the train station.
What time do these things kick off? Usually about 11 or 12 right? Would anyone like to confer on what time would be best? i would imagine 12ish or something.

Theres loads of places to eat and drink in the center, also theres the museum on park street, and loads of nice places to sit and draw outside if its a nice day, might be nice to sit on college green and draw or something. I guess Josh would be the best person to ask about this as he's lived here longer, and organised the bristol ones in the past!

Anyone have any suggestions?

I think 12 is a good time to start. There is a small cafe at the end of the Bristol Temple Meads station which would be fine to meet up at, or the pub across the road (the wreckless engineer iirc). As for attractions, there are many, really depends on what people want... Personally I think the waterfront is awesome.
If you want to go to Park Street, I recommend bringing £3.90 for the dayrider, its a really steep hill! There is an art gallery and museum up that way. If its a nice day then college green is nice to sit in and draw.

My recomendation is the waterfront. Its near the station, you have the Ferry which can take you all up the river, there is the boat (i cant for the life of me remember its name!! its famous and old...) the Ferry can take you there. Also the Arnolfini is on the waterfront, as is the Industrial Museum.

Ok, my opinion... done!

lefran

'I recommend bringing £3.90 for the dayrider'

personally i wouldnt bother, it takes like 2 minutes to walk to the top of it, takes about 10 minutes to walk to the center, and about another 5 to walk to the top of park street i would guess, doesnt take long

Mr Man

Yes! Bristol, ain't it nice, infact it's the happiest city in the uk according to one very reliable new source! (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1316612.ece)

I'll be there, possibly not at 12. But i'll be there.

The museum's collection is pretty nice, but a bit naffly laid out, it's still one of the best places for a CA style meet. It depends on the weather, we could go down to the harbour and draw, if it's nice. Could even consider walking up to the suspension bridge, but might be a bit far, some nice pubs on the way though :P

The waterfront on a saturday will be decked out with louts, i suggest we move inland, king bill, commercial rooms are alright if we are down the centre, they'd have the room.

Arnofini hasn't been the same since that horrible titchner exhibition made me cry at night, industrial museum still only has 3 walls as far as i know, but i'll check on my way to work.

Nalot, i think you mean the SS great britain, or the pride of southampton... which is less glamorous :P

Why not do http://www.meetup.com/lifedrawingsociety/? The charge is £10 for 3 hours, when Candid only does 2 for £6 - there are also concessions for paying in advance for so many sessions, so quid in it works out cheaper. Tuition is given if requested. Tony is a nice guy and is trying to bring life drawing to more people in some off beat places.

Chee, I used to run Saturday classes at the Art Academy. We'd start around 11am - 6pm. Later, if people are up for it.....

I"d like to start a saturday session again or maybe sundays. I know a life model, shes very good. Usually, we pay the model 10quid an hour, so everyone would bring money for the model; materials etc would be your own.
All we need now is space and easels.....

£10 / week is way too much. And the only difficult with tonys method is the amount of emails/spam of meetups that dont happen/non regular locations.

The question I have about Candid is the cost. It should NOT cost £7 per person for a room packed with 30-40 odd people = 120-280 squids. In addition, I find the feedback more hindrance than useful for our cross purposes.

Nevertheless, Candid offers a good regular meetup but if you factor in having to pay for a location, where lighting is non existant (the models are too well lit), the sessions are not long enough, or short enough (warm up period), the 2 hours are insufficient to really get your 10 000 hours required to master life drawing in traditional/digital media then a longer term solution is required.

To be really serious, a Saturday session for a solid 6 hours! is more significant to start chipping away at your 10 000 hours. 6 x 4 = 24 hours/month x 1 year = 288 - 300 hours/year, requiring 33.3 years to become a master

In contrast, the 2 hour candid method gives you a mere 96 hours per year, requiring 104.2 years to become a master

This means, to become a master faster, means putting in at least 10 hours of lifedrawing related work per week, to get you your 480-500 hours per year. Even then, that brings you to master level in 20 years.

In contrast, folks who are able to put aside time to focus on the study of the human forms and arts, lets say 6-10 hours/day for 6 days = 2880-3000 hours of life drawing per year. This equals to master level in 3 years. So, wanna be the next Jaime. Its not secret. Just hard work!

So, there you have it folks. TO be a master, spend 3 years of your life, drawing 10 hours/ day for six days and you too can clock in the time to get good in anything!

I forgot to add, the hours method is just a base.

Add in:

1/ Intuition
2/ Intelligence - allowing once to deduce the workings of basics into its core elements
3/ Discovery/rediscovery & epiphanies

All help cement and accelerate your learning process.

I guess 2-3 years of solid dedicated hard work and good exposure to learning tools can help you become a hero from zero.

aefx
May 11th, 2009, 11:03 AM
Ship: you could go to candid for four nights a week, you'd get 8 hours out of that. Do you go on the Wednesday or Thursday nights ever? I haven't been recently but when I was going they were much smaller in class size. But yeah, I wish Candid would be more thoughtful about the lighting situation and the quality of the models.

T: A weekend drawing session would be great, if there were some more people and a space you can count me in.

What up Faygs!

So it looks like the workshop's in Cologne in August! I'm gonna try and make it and spend some time in London as well.

Still need to work out if this is realistic, but I'll definitely try everything I can! Be great to see you lot again and meet a few of the new faces too :)

What's this Germany workshop thing?! my head has been buried in the sand.

That hire a model for a day sounds good! 2 hours a week doesn't sound like much (although better than the zero i get  ), also shipwight is right, need to chip away at the 10,000 hours of study!
