Life drawing class!
Hey uk peeps.
been very inactive in the uk thread for quite some time, although i have followed it alot.
for those who don't know me my name is tony, i had a huge problem with changing my username alot....:( but that stops now.
a friend of mine has just given me an idea for a sketch meet/life drawing course which is basicly a cheap one run by its own students, the life drawing will focus mainly on clothed models as the students them selves will take turns to pose, although this idea is in very early stages we're just throwing it out there and seeing how much interest in generates really.
we're located in medway, kent, and clearly there is a huge lack of meets down this way :( i will post more info up as it comes.
Any questions?
PS congrats J.Boswel!

Damn, wish i could make it to the party, no money though, and just when i've started to get life back on track too, not been to a meet or anything for frakking ages and just when i've learned the art of getting drunk (wasn't much of a drinker), very fitting poster btw.
Quick question, has anyone gone cold turkey for art? i just gave up tv, games, etc (game addicted, bejeweled 2 deluxe is a dangerously addictive game) so i can improve my skills, i even tried coffee, which i won't be doing again, euh, tea all the way.

Ayup chaps - sorry to butt in on your conversations, but I couldnt find a better place to ask a question relating to British illustration!?
THE AOI have any of you lot ever ventured into this? I've got myself in the show, in the book and on the tour this year, as a student entry, but I'm yet to meet anybody who's actually heard of it - apart from getting contacted by an editor in London, but he turned out to be one of the judges for the AOI anyway.
I was encouraged to apply whilst at college, as it was 'all the rave' and so on, spent upwards of £250 in admission and travel, and will have to travel to collect the painting at the end of the 'tour' aswell - which for a new artist is alot of money. It's been a year since I finished the piece of work, and I'm no longer a student, so it's also frustrating to have that as a banner piece with my name and number next to it, plus anyone who finds it will assume I'm still a student, and the words 'new talent' 'yound' and 'student' I've found not to be the things employers are looking for in an illustrator.
So basically what I'm asking is has anyone had any good experiences with this - does it look good on a CV, or as it's 'pay to apply' does it devalue it somewhat? Although I saw some fantastic pieces of work at the show, and in the annual, there were others which I (shamefully on my part) thought must only have been accepted for the admission money - which ofcourse makes you look twice at your own work (mine did stick out like a sore thumb at the show, 1 of only 4 images that I could see done in completely traditional mediums, and 1 of 3 I think that had no contemporary twist :S - but then, that can be good or bad can't it?).
So, that's an out of the blue long question for anyone who can offer a bit of advice!
Cheers in advance,
Now I must go and paint after spending the morning packing for the move to not-so-sunny Nottingham at the end of the month - crickey!!
Tra,
Phil

August 20th, 2008, 12:23 PM
cheers chaps, I was wary of becoming a member aswell, so just paid for the images 32 annual admission alone - the tour does go one for pretty much a whole year, so it's not so bad from that view point - but it was complete chance whether you got on the tour or not, only the top 80, out of 400-500 entrants - so I was lucky there. But again I reckon the top 80 doesnt mean the best images, but more likely the best suited to a hanged exhibition, which mine being one of two oil paintings would have been considered, content regardless.
As soon as the pay cheques come rolling in I'll let you now... I hear you laughing already ;)

God I miss the Nandos meetings! (and the hot chicken:)
Guys I have a question maybe someone here can help me with...
I need to quote 4 to 6 graphic novels, 46 or 48 pages each on full color, this is a HUGE commission for me and since it is the first time I get involved in something this big I have no idea about how to charge for it.. should I charge for page?, for each book? or make just 1 big round number for the hole thing??? the project is comic book style (right up my alley!!) and I would be doing all (pencils, inks and colors) so how much (and how) should I charge for this??
THIS IS BIG FOR ME GUYS, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
(Dave: I just checked again your work mate, you are on a roll!!)
alice_
September 1st, 2008, 06:29 AM
hey danlop: when you do your quote you should quote the whole thing, but then break it down so the client can see the real cost of everything, rather than just an abstract large number. That way, even if you have to negotiate to meet their budget, you are more likely to get the amount you want. As for how much to charge I would suggest doing it hourly, and give yourself a good rate (i don't know what a good rate is, at the very least 10/hour?). I've heard that pencilling one page a day is realistic.
danlop
September 1st, 2008, 10:54 AM
Thanks Alice!!, one penciled page per day is realistic, so if I were to charge £10 or a bit more per hour let's say 8 hours a day it should be something like £80 to £100 per page, then it should be £3.680 to £4.800 for each book (46 to 48 pages) right? does anyone know if these numbers are market realistic? Does anyone know the standard fee for a finished comic book page?

alice_
September 2nd, 2008, 12:51 PM
danlop: again I'm not really sure, but I have heard (somewhere on the ever reliable internet) that $100USD per pencilled page is some kind of standard. You'll have to factor in inking and colouring time too, which could double your estimate. It depends on the market, the publisher, etc. To be totally honest I just don't know, but something like £8000+ seems like a reasonable minimum to me, but go up rather than down. It seems like a lot of money, which is why a breakdown of individual costs is helpful.
If the people you are negotiating with are serious then they will probably have some kind of budget anyway and just want to test the waters by asking you for a quote. I'm always scared about price estimating in case I scare them off completely, but serious and professional clients will get back to you, even if it is to say that your quote is way too high. If they don't get back to then they probably weren't worth working with anyway! (at least, that is what I tell myself....)
Ultimately I have no idea what I am talking about - I'm relatively inexperienced, so if any real professionals are reading this and scoffing then please contradict me!

Cheers man!....hope you got it sorted, that seems pretty cheap for a whole book to me....you definitely need to overestimate the amount of time thats gonna take as I gaurentee it'll take longer than you think and you sure as hell don't want to have all those pages to do with the realisation that your not getting all that much for the work. I'd suggest doing a page right now, timing the whole thing then you'll kow more realistically how long it'll take. Oh and then factor in extra time for pissing about and edits. Keep on rocking man...cool new stuff in your CG folio (good to see that war hammer piece all done and dusted too;))

I was told by the students who did it last year, that it's definitely worthwhile. As doing it breaks down the hefty syllabus of the "Art Department", into digestible pieces.
I just have to let you know what it's like, when I've started it in a week's time.

I have been diving with hammerhead sharks, snorkelling with sealions and turtles and walking with giant tortoises and marine iguanas. The Galapagos islands are totally awesome. A 15 minute bus ride takes ya from volcanic desert to cloud forest...
Then it was off to Peru for the inca trail. That was one of the single most awesome experiences I have ever had. If anyone likes stupidly vast mountains and ancient ruins, save up for it and GO! I cant wait to paint some of whats in my head now.
Anyways, hope ya all doing well!
P.S. Welcome coelakanth! Great name... crazy fishes!

Hello there boys and girls!
It's about time I got back to CA after being in the dark for too long, sitting on my sketchbook when I outta be buried in it! I missed a few meetups back in the day and I'm not proud of it. How are they coming these days anyway? I've still not lost my CA meetup virginity yet, lol.
I've decided to turn to alternative means to jump start my motivation - meetup.com :)
http://art.meetup.com/505/
Is a new group I've started for those in SE / London / Berks area to meetup weekly/whenever and get creative, wander an art gallery as a group, share n create together.
Click the link, have a look. Suggest something maye? At least have a peek to make me happy :bashful:

Hello lovely people!
Seems a bit quiet in here :bounce:
I guess people are settling into university.
I just thought I'd mention the Birmingham comics convention is on the first weekend in October. I went last year and really enjoyed it - met the Blink Twice guys, Imagine FX and 2DArtist. It certainly helps if your into comics, but I think it's worth it anyway. Looks like it could be double the size this year!
You can read more about it on the site: http://www.thecomicsshow.co.uk/
I am hoping to go, but I wouldn't be able to organise a meet - I find myself quite busy of late! :teeth:

I've never posted here before but as this is the UK group and I am in the UK I thought it was appropriate to say "hi" (see above). I was actually looking for a Scottish thread but, as usual there doesn't appear to be one. If someone does know about one I'll be glad to have been proven wrong.
As always if anyone has any jobs going it would be great to join in.

I've been pretty silent on the boards lately too but things are cool here also :) And still chuffed that people actually use the mitten bop emoticon, lol. :mittenbop:
As for the next meet - I was thinking of arranging a Christmas one if anyone's interested? It's probably not the best time financially, but maybe people will be in better spirits?? So everyone shout out when you're most likely or defo will be available before the end of the year and we'll sort stuff out from there. :)
Also, if you're on FaceBook, feel free to join the Official ConceptArt.org UK Group linked in my sig. If I arrange meets then I usually list all the details and make an official event out of it so people who frequent less on here or aren't members can know of them. If anyone else is willing to help out with such events then let me know and I'll make you an officer or something.
Hope everyone is well, and happy drawing~! ^_^

In analysis. If mcCain, were as down to earth as his concession speech (without the influence of his handlers, and minus the global economy issues/BUSH legacy), he would have done very well. At least, its all over now and Americans have a new found purpose/guide

Regarding McCain, I've always figured him to be a decent guy. If it was a vote between him and Kerry I'd go for him which is saying something because I usually despise republicans. One of McCain's big issues was Palin, possibly the most annoying person I've seen in politics. Not that I would have voted for him but I feel he should have picked a vice president that had a more solid background in Economics or Foreign Policy.

Why is it important for the public to see these exhibitions?
The organisers of BODY WORLDS and The O2 believe when people understand more about how the body works and how it can break down, they are more likely to choose healthy and sustainable lifestyles. They also hope it will inspire visitors to learn more about life sciences. Knowledge about what the human body looks like and how it functions is basic life science information that should be available to everyone

Do we get to stay in as long as we like or do we only have a short time? if we can go in and stay in maybe people who can/want to should book earlier time slot so they can go in and make the most of their ticket? hey Atastrophea, you looking for life drawing in oxford?
look no further than the Jam Factory! (http://www.thejamfactoryoxford.com/artclasses.html) theres 2 sessions every wednesday, a tutored class running from 6-7:30pm, then an untutored class from 8-9:30pm - getting there early is advised as its normally fully packed out by 5:45...
be warned that the last session of 2008 is next wednesday if you can make it - in 2009 though there will be sessions on tuesdays as well which i will be taking (a thought which im sure is frightening for all concerned :P )
i guess if there is anyone in the area who needs life drawing time, come along :)
im also up for an oxford sketchmeet, tho seeing as i missed the last one and havent even made it to one of the london ones, feel free to ignore me :)

Just dropping by to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! I'll surely see most of you in the New Year ;P
Stoat: Welcome to the UK!! If you could make the meet next year it'd be great to meet you.
About the London meet:
It'll most likely take place in AFTER the 15th February as pao (our visitor from Paris) and Duddlebug will both be available to meet us all. Information will be posted here and on FaceBook. Both wil be linked into my sig so if you can't find them, find me. :) Does anyone have any suggestions of when to meet up/what to see?
IFX: What would you like to know and, if you don't mind me asking, why? Will you be tagging along with us sometime? :)
Take care all,

Most folks just huddle indoors, keep warm and the best plein air study is of the outside, from insde a cafe :)

Okay, I kind of figured out what cartridge paper is, with an assist from Google -- sort of rough, heavy, wood-pulp sketching paper, yes? But what the heck is detail paper?

it was by the duck pond, if youve been down there. next to the tennis courts/kids playground (a good 10-15 minute walk from where you live, on the other side of bedford hill) actually i think they were following me for 5-10 minutes before it happend. the side where we live is a lot safer i reckon. thanks for the support people im ok now. having it happen in your own area makes you a bit agoraphobic though :(
