Hello hello, i was not hit by a car! nor was i hit by the TB cull!
5 weeks left McCoy, will have an exhibition in Brizzle and London.
I've been making childrens books and painting in gouche and living in my studio. It's been pretty fun playing with narrative but now i realise I better get back to something exhibit able.
What've you all been up tooo?

IMPORTANT MATTER FOR ARTISTS - ConceptArt.Org News-Brad Holland Interview
Hi everyone,
The email below will be self-explanatory. There is an important issue facing us as artists, related to the copyrights of our works, which corporations wish to control and take at our expense. You could lose ownership of the art you create. We must put a stop to this immediately unless you wish to see others owning and plagiarizing your art.
This is too important to ignore please participate and forward to your others.

Congress is rushing these bills through to a floor vote. The House will start marking up their version of the bill at 2:00 today; the Senate will do so tomorrow. To try to stop this bill, we first need to slow down the race to get it passed.
FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS' PARTNERSHIP
Take Action: Don't Let Congress Orphan Our Work
We've set up an online site for visual artists to e-mail their Senators and Representatives with one click.
This site is open to professional artists, photographers and any member of the image-making public.
We've provided sample letters from individuals representing different sectors of the visual arts.
If you're opposed to the Orphan Works act, this site is yours to use.
For international artists and our colleagues overseas, we've provided a special link, with a sample letter and instructions as to whom to write.
2 minutes is all it takes to write Congress and protect your copyright:

Hi UK peeps!! :teeth:
I'm gonna go on a 5-day tip to London with my father to celebrate me graduating from the Dutch equivalent of pre-university (I think). I'll be in London from the 5th until the 10th of June. It would be great if I could meet up with a few CA people while I'm over there..
You guys know better what is going on in London than I do, so maybe there is some nice exhibition to go to, or a zoo or something? :P (Is there a zoo nearby London?).
Anyways, tell me if you're interested and we'll pick a date, time and place. :teeth:
Love,
Marleen.
P.S. in case you're trying to e-mail some U.S. people for that Orphan bill that Dirty C pointed out, I made a post (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1754577&postcount=14) in that thread with links to e-mail adresses and forms for those institutions, in case you don't have a fax machine nearby.

Well FOLKS.
I'm afraid to say. YOU ALL HAVE TO PERFORM SAFER SEX.
cough. Alright. What I mean is, you have to think of watermarking/protecting your art assets better becasue the Orphan Act has been approved and rushed through the US IP subcomitee.
I can see the US/UK govt gleefully rubbing their hands....(a way to tax artists on any artwork they produce through a central registry and a blatant infringement on Brent copyright law)
5/8/08:
Bad news:
""H.R. 5889 (the Orphan Works bill in the House) unanimously sailed through the House IP Subcommittee yesterday."
The Illustrators Partnership has sent out an alert that we must email the House Judiciary Committee NOW.
In light of that spirit.
I'm going to have to figure out a creative way of watermarkign without an art piece being too fugly to look at. :)

Just found out about the orphan bill! I guess we're going to have to padlock our sketchbooks and never post work online again..... Just to be sure, a simple copyright mark will not matter anymore, you have to actually register every single piece of work if you want to be certain no one can use it?

To be honest if you guys are so worried about this bill you should have been on it months ago.

May 9th, 2008, 09:11 AM
the registry is a purely compulsory matter. and does not affect the bill and does NOT guarantee your work is not pillaged. raped and distorted (derivative use is allowed under the orphanage)
A simple copyright is not enough. You have to stick FUGLY copyright where it hurts a sweet image or key areas

J.Boswell - you chatting about the 'Cans festival?' In Leake Street, Waterloo?
I went the other day - awesome er...'exhibit'
Theres a wall thats been chipped away to create a giant face, pretty cool how the artist managed to use the texture with his work. Theres also some little cartoony/graphic gems here and there. Granted, much of the work has been stenciled, but who cares? More walls and diused tunnels should get this treatment....I got some photos, need to upload.....

So, I was looking for a book to read, not caring what, and saw EON by Greg Bear on my book shelf. Having absolutely no idea what it was about, I decided to read.
Got well into it, but was actually finding it difficult to 'imagine' what the world was like within. So, to help me a long, a did goodle image search, and found that CGSociety, had done a 'competition' based on the book. I was blown away with some of the interpretations: 2d, 3d, Illustration and video, so I thought I'd share here:

As for the cold thing, I blame the weather, and my smoking habit. Which, I'm gona try knocking on the head. I have tried before with no luck *sigh* but I really do want to stop. My smoking is done mainly when I'm drinking and other smokers are about, so its all gona be down to will power - fuck nicotine patches, I think they're a terrible idea, and defeats the object of quiting smoking....

Wowowow :P are we talking about two different things here? I think we are..
I'll be in london from the 5th of June until the 11th of June. So it was thursday the 5th I was talking about. I'm just replying to Quicksilvers idea of a meeting Friday the 6th or saturday the 7th..
I guess I didn't read through carefully enough to see that there's gonna be something this week as well.. I thought the day discussion was about the 5, 6th or 7th ^^..
Ah well, I'll just blame it on English not being my first language :P

Dan...yeah man we have lovely courts all over the place round here:)....I've had some issues with my hand the last month or so though so I'm trying not to do any more damage to it and I always seem to get injured when I play B'ball...if there's a crew though I can just bring my ball and doodle by the side of the court;) the tate has that stuff on too if your on about this sunday, and there's a very nice Nando's near-by with lovely huge arched ceilings:)....I'm occupied till later on Sunday, but I'll be about later afternoon/evening time:)

Marleene: I picked Saturday in the end so the working folks can make it during the day :) And about the Fashion Show, one of my mates will be helping out with the Bournemouth (1pm) one so I was gonna check that one out, though I heard De Montfort's (3:30pm) meant to be pretty good too, and they're the only uni in Britain to do Shoe Design. Dunno! Been meaning to call my sis to see if she can make it, since she studies Fashion. Also, I still need to figure out where the hell I'm gonna sleep, aarrgghh so much money.....
So all in all....I'll get back to you when I get a few things sorted out ^_^;;

So where do we want to meet?
All suggestions of great exhibitions, or small things to attend are appreciated.
I myself thought to go hang in a park (Local Londoners: which one is nice?) and go for a drink and a bite later, and maybe visit a not so huge exhibition?
Also: what would be a good place to meet up?

As far as parks go. I like St. James Park and Regents Park. St. James is smaller and closer to touristy stuff and Regents Park is much bigger, more varied, and you can walk along the canal into Camden.

I looked up the weather forecast and it says "sunny and 23 degrees C", so that sounds allright. If it starts to rain we can always find a café or restaurant or something?
This is weird to do since I have no idea of how the city looks, and what is a good point to meet up, but this is my proposal:
- We meet up at noon, at Regent's Park Underground station at the exit (There is only one exit I hope??)
- Then we go into the park if the weather is nice, find a nice place to sit (and maybe some interesting landscape to draw?) and have some fun.
I'm not sure if the meeting place is a good one. Please help me with that ^^ it might be easier to meet up somewhere more central and decide from there where we go?

Hello. I'm Rose, based in Essex.
I'm now an ex-student(just finished) who is a little terrified for the first time in her life. I'd definitely like to be part of a group of UK artists, people more talented and less green than me. :)

Thought I ought to say "hi" here too. Name's Dave, I'm in London, and I'm trying (in my mid/late 40s) to transition over into fine art. My background is in academic biomedicine, but in recent years have moved out of that area, and have been/am involved in (running) various other online sites for artists. I'm mainly interested in oil-painting, but currently want to improve my own drawing and colour approaches. I also have some experience in 2D and 3D computer graphics. I look in here at CA quite a bit, and make occasional posts. However, conscious that I'm older than most of the membership here (and, I get the impression, most of the UK'ers posting in this thread).

Well, I'm 24 and I've just finished a degree in Digital Animation, which I think I've done well in. But, I'd really like to become a better illustrator, and maybe work in character design for the gaming industry. I'm just not good enough yet.

Dave, I'm staring at the business end of 50 and about to start over career-wise, too, so you aren't entirely alone. Unfortunately, I have to sell my house in the States before I can join you all. And that's ever so much fun to do right now.
Good thing I drink.

Thanks, Mogster. We sold up in London, so I'll be down in Sussex when I finally do make it.
It's the weirdest thing. It's like being 7 again or something. I've had a corporate job for the last 25 years, and now I (finally!) have to work out what I want to be when I grow up.

seeing as people have been (recently) making their introductions, im thinking i better get in on the act - ive been here long enough...
so, yeah... im living in Oxford at the moment being paid for doing some form of art related shit, tho im looking to move....somewhere else, hopefully to do something more arty :)
its good to see so many uk based artists around - there seems to be so few in Oxford, just posh hobby artists... tho i guess London is close enough to get to for the artist vibe. i should really get down there at somepoint. maybe to a Dr Sketchy session or something - anyone been to one of those? any good?

Hmmm, Boswell. Save the world, eh?
It's overwhelmingly tempting to fill the sketchbooks with, like, weapons designs or something, isn't it? Just because I totally doubt that's the sort of experience they're looking for here.
Oooh! How about these guys? They're pretty. These are Yersinia pestis, the plague bacillus. (Sorry. It's something like 98 degrees F here today for the third day running and I'm a touch crabby).

yeah i went to one a few months back. i cant speak for other cities, but my experience of dr. sketchys in london wasnt too impressive.
- the model was getting progressively more drunk through the night. she couldnt sit still for half a second initially so this didnt help
- the emphasis is on humour and 'fun' rather than any sort of art- the guy isnt there to teach you to draw, hes there to make jokes and be gay
- the poses are all very very short. the longest was 15 minutes- most were only a couple
- few people there could really draw- at the end of the night there was a competition for best piece of the night and i won..despite being the youngest there and having created a load of bollocks even by my low standards. the oil paints i won were just the worst quality ever and not worth opening
- its a tenner. life drawing classes are usually cheaper, better structured and you actually get taught-i reccommend those instead
dont expect to learn anything basically. im sure its good for most of the other people that went- i was just expecting something a bit more academic cos im a geek. its probably good for a laugh if your going with a couple mates and you have a few drinks (its hosted in a pub) but i could think of funner things to do for a tenner

nice! i guess one of the good things about Oxford is that people are always up for coming here... :D
where did you guys check out last time you were here? the history museum with all the animals is definately cool (but not as good as the Pitt Rivers museum thats attached to it - the victorian collection of random stuff picked up in the days of Empire is awesome) and theyve even got one of these (http://www.dysonairblade.co.uk/) in the toilet for those with a love of industial design
Ive also been hitting up the Ashmolean museum during my lunch hours doing some cast studies - theyve got quite a few good busts (:perv:) along with some rodin and degas sculptures... highly recommended
lots of museums = good
shame about Dr Sketchys being shit tho - cheers for giving the review Tie, saved me from going there and getting annoyed

Hi guys, Next wednesday I'll fly to Colombia to do all the paper work for my job in Barcelona so my time in London is over, these days have been really weird as I have mixed feelings about leaving, on one side is sad to go (after all I've been here for 2 good years) but on the other one I'm quite exited about the Job in Spain... In any case I really want to thank you all for your friendship and your help with my drawings, without a doubt I've grown as an artist thanks to your constructive help guys and for that you have my deepest gratitude. I'll be dropping by to say hi from time to time.
Take care you all!! :)

I went last night and it was fantastic! what a great venue! yea it is basically art with beers...big bottles of Magners are £4 there, which for London prices is very reasonable! I highly recommend going. Its cheaper tonight than the weekend though, and is only open till about 1 tonight compared with 3 at the weekend.
Last night there was breaks and chilled dance music with the bar, then live jazz out near the art, there was a 20 min beatboz documentary shown in the video section, a live performance, and lots of crazy art and animations.
