Ok, I think the best meeting place on Saturday will be the Costa coffee place about a minutes walk out of Picadilly station.
I'll be there about 12 :)

We'll prob be going to the bodyworks exhibition at about 2 oclock. So it should give everyone plenty of time to get there.

So, cya then peeps! :yayca:

Got my tickets! :D Should arrive just before 12pm, and leave around 1pm on Sunday.

Jon: Is Costa Coffee easy to find in a blatantly obvious way? 'Cause I swear I have the worst sense of direction known to man @_@;;;

Picadilly station is on the end of a street full of shops, so as soon as you go outside you'll be on the right road, you can't get lost! (I can't imagine anyone getting lost anyway :P)

Hi everyone, I'm newish here and have just discovered this thread. I live in B'ham and since leaving uni and moving don't know anyone who likes to draw with pencils and paint, it all seems to be digital which is cool but not my passion. Let me know what's going on x

Welcome! THere should be some folk up your way, so stay tuned and get to know people. Digital doesnt have to be your only passion, many of us here like ye olde pencil and charcoal too!
Each of us have sketchbook threads here, links in the signitures, so visit them, see whats going on, and create one of your own! It will help you so much and keep you practicing!!!:)

Momiji competition

Hello everyone :-)

I saw this advertised on a poster in uni and whilst I haven't got enough spare time/creative energy to really be taking on anything more I thought someone on here might enjoy it! (I might do it for a little excersise for myself anyway if I can find time ;) )

anyway its basicaly a competition to design 3 "Momiji" dolls and the tins that they come in on the theme "Indulgence". Deadline is March 22nd 08 (although final judging stage is reached through public votes so the sooner you enter the more votes you could rack up..) the prize is having the dolls manufactured, receiving your own set, £1500 and tons of publicity in glossy mags.

Link below

Let us know if you enter - then we can all vote for you :-)

Question: If a client of yours asks you to do some more crappy work for them, but havent paid you for the previous work you did, should you do it and moan later, or just hold the work to ransom?

It's not as if the pay is gonna buy me house or anything, and it would only take me 2 hrs to do the work, so no skin off my nose. But, everytime I do work for this bunch, I am always chasing them for the money; not just for me, but for my fella too, and I'm kinda sick of it really. My head says 'do it and moan later', my heart says 'fuck it, the bastads should pay up first...'

Dunno if the commissioned graphics/art business is much different from most other business relationships but here's how I generally view things:

If the relationship is purely business(i.e. not working for a friend/family): I require payment within the contractual time period before persuing further work. However, if I was desperate for clients I may be tempted to work with them if they were having problems securing the funds to pay me. However I wouldn't give them a whole lot of leeway as your wasted time is an opportunity cost where you could have been persuing other clients who can actually pay on time.

I do have quite a few clients who do have problems paying on time, usually the small ones. If the contract says payment in a month and they don't pay on time I then halt any future work. If they say that I'll have the payment within a business week then I'm willing to cut them some slack.

If this is a chronic issue you may want to review the contract both parties sign for future work and include penalties for late payment(if you haven't already).

Hope this helps.

koshime
March 13th, 2008, 07:41 AM
Normally, businesses are allowed 30 days from invoicing to pay up. Now, as a business point of view, this is tricky, you shoudl thus, in future dealings ask for a portion of payment up front and the remainder on invoicing.

Daniel Lopez will be coming this evening to nandos, so see you fine folk there for a small private sketch/critique 101

James, Chee - thanks for the advice. Its a tricky one this. The illo is for Guys & St Thomas' People magazine, and I dont think they should suffer; its the company I'm commissioned through, who are the problem- they've had their 30 days.
Their a biggish company, so there shouldnt be so much hassle getting paid. They were never this bad, its only recently when they stopped paying by BACS system that the troubles started. They pay by cheque now, and need 2 Directors to sign off cheques, but the Directors and accounts department are not in the same building, and the Directors only visit the accounts dept once a week to sign off payments to freelancers. Sometimes, they dont turn up at all. (I called everyday for 2 weeks to get over a grand off them, all what was needed, was 1 bloody signature)

I'm not desparate for work from this company, but I don't want this money situation to jepodise any future work from other clients this company represents.
I'm confused as to what I should do. I would love not to send the work until I'm paid, but its not the editors/designers fault the money situation is so bad, so I cant be angry at them; its the way the Directors run the company that is so fucked....

BTW- dunno if folk know this but Terry Pratchet has alzeimers disease, poor bloke. He's chatting on the radio now, and says he's having trouble typing....so sad...

Figure Drawing Without A Model (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Figure-Drawing-Without-Model-Tiner/dp/0715306464) by Ron Tiner isnt strictly an anatomy book, rather it is a series of exercises for you to work on that help teach illustrators how to understanding the human form so they can accurately draw figures from their imagination.

It also contains interesting sections on compostion and developing visual narratives.

Possibly to London Zoo as I already have 3 or 4 of the buy one get one free vouchers from kellogs so if we have the right number of people/vouchers everyone can get in half price (about £7 I think) I certainly need to do more animal sketchies from life so think it would be good experience/practice :)

Ken Livingstone is rubbish, and finding any excuse to charge Londoners for anything that crosses his mind. He's also a dickhead, and has corrupt party members. Whatever you do, DONT vote for him...

Boris Johnson....hhhmmm, He has some good views and policies, and wont be riding around in the standard issued Mayoral vehicle, but on his bicycle as he's always done (dunno how relevant this is but...) He's not a bad choice...

Brian Paddick- ex-police commissioner, got his head on straight and IMO will run the financial budget better than our present mayor. He has my vote.

You should read up on Boris & Brian as they are very good candidates. I have a feeling Boris may win, which is ok - anyone but Ken

If Candid still overfills the room like they used to, the price hike should actually be welcome. If a couple less people come, they make the same money and you get a better view.

When I started going to Candid it was usually about five people. Does Ann still run it? Always meant to invite her for a pint actually :)

Molly mentioned that she was thinking of hiring candid Koshime, and running a session your end but it's more than do-able down here. Transport isnt really an issue, the venue is a 15-20 walk from the station. Number wise i'd say 20 would be max and pushing it at that although there are other venues that could support more. The main benefit of the current venue are the 12 easels and drawing boards on site.

Be great to meet a few more of the crowd and just get some drawing done. Have a ton of great models i can use but im sure youve got a slew of good models up in the big smoke

koshime
April 8th, 2008, 10:02 AM
Well - the advantage of a non London locale is, that a whole bunch of artists (including the organisers) can sleep under one roof. and paint /draw all through the night + beer +++

So the salisbury option is still a highly viable one!

P.S. I think Zoos that are run in the interest of conservation and with high standards of animal welfare are sadly a necessary thing with the way we treat the planet. My art teacher was on strike today... I kinda hoped to see her billeted outside the school... the A level students would have joined in :)

no particularly relevant to anything other than the fact that art was off...

aefx, I would very much like to come to the zoo, however, I am about as reliable as... something not very reliable, I do however have a 2 for one voucher I think... so i can accommodate someone if they so wish... maybe. let me make totally totally sure... but thats a nice date in the distance from now... so maybe kinda possibly if I get my way yes.

which is nice :)

Ah. I remember Sheffield. cold. windy. hilly. but lots of drunken students crawling up the streets every evening from city centre.

I recommend, the derelict water containers, and the ore factories around meadowhall, and a short drive out to the peaks for practise
