I have a fair amount of photography work and the book i did for that unit is one that I am particularly proud of, and a sculpture I did for my last unit that i was pretty chuffed with, I'll be sure to mentionall those family links (great grandfather was a fairly esteemed illustraitor) and the like...

haa, AIB seems to be the place to go... Im good friends with a guy there called joe, and one of the photography students once took a photo of me passed out on a sofa.

okay.

but I forget my manners;

WELCOME! all new people.

Not to intrude, but I figured someone here might be interested.

I am selling a brand new copy of the D'Artiste Concept Art book, i'm sure most of you here know what that is, but for those who don't, here's a bit more info http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/dartiste/concept_art/

This is a fantastic book, especially for you budding concept artists. Reason i'm selling is that I got sent two by mistake (i'm not complaining). It hasn't been opened, although there are some scratches on the outside cover (the book is fine as it comes out of the cover).

Any takers? :lifedrawing:

Visa debit cards are okay though - that way you can only spend what you've got :D Though since getting terribly confused as to how I still managed to go into my overdraft last term (even with some extra pocket money) I've started keeping track of my finances using Excel. Naomi i've had this problem every month for the last, hmm 6 months? It's always something ridiculous like 20 pounds if you go over something like 20 pence. I get confused about it every time. Don't they have overdraft protection things? What bank are you with?

Jon, all these negative things about banking. There's a guy called Martin Lewis, he has a site I think it's www.moneysavingexpert.com or something, he knows what he's talking about, tells you how to avoid overdraft etc. He talks about it every week on Radio 2 where stupid people phone in asking something like 'I accept every advert online even if it says 'Fre3 P0rn for LIf3 OmG.exe' and my PC has found 1000000 spyware intrusions. All the messages ask me to enter my credit card details because they promise they work for Ebay and I get charged 1000 pounds every month, I don't know why.' Or something stupid like that.

I can't even remember what I was talking about.

Aaahhh don't remind me, I was charged £30 for going over by £5 in my Barclays Current Account :/
I have accounts with three different banks, though the one I mainly use now is my Natwest Student Account, which (*thankfully*) doesn't charge me interest or nasty fines when I go into my overdraft. ^_^ Still, tis best to make a habit of avoiding them altogether, eh? Haha.

Not sure mate. Be nice if there was...

As for banking I know Visa debit cards are fine, I just see it as an account card instead of a visa credit...(which I recommend no-one gets unles they are in a real nice paying, regular job)... But wait till you students leave school and your account status changes, the bastards can charge up to £39 a day if you go into your overdraft...bastards....

oh, btw - I watched I Am Legend, and its alright; an american take on 28 Days Later, except, the 'walking dead' are in 3D... shame that, real shame....

The train back to London leaves Burton at: 6.58pm, 7.20pm, 7.22pm, 8.20pm, 8.20pm

dr-yes: sick- if your up for a half term thing then maybe we could try for the morning class on a tuesday? 11am it starts, i think it would be better cos it can get quite crowded in the evenings and we could hang out/get pissed afterwards :} also, give us your half term term dates...we dont necessarily have the same week off

nice john, I like the 1st best....I think it might be cool to try with different models, (I'd have like to have seen a skinnier guy with a bald/shaved head-I recon it would add to the interest, and add a bit more of a story), the haircut takes the apocalyptic possibilites more towards "normal guy with gas mask", if that makes sense:) they're pretty though

Arg! I was in London this weekend with my sister to go see Wicked ( which was really good) but on the sunday we stopped in The Crooked Surgeon in Leicster Square and we both had our DS's with us to we took them out to play briefly, that was the last time i saw mine :S so ive rang the pub, and im waiting for them to call me back, if not ill ring them back tomorrow morning ( i highly doubt i will get it back ( it had 6 games with it :( ) but its worth trying), the bar was quiet whilst we were there, so im hoping they might have picked it up whilst clearing our glasses etc.
If they have picked it up i was gonna ask a Londoner a favor if they would be able to collect it for me or something and post it if i gave you money to do so etc.

I doubt i will get it back, but its worth a try :(

I dont want to sound grim but I wouldnt hold out much hope for anything lost in London...

at least it wasnt a lap-top or anything super-valuable like that.

As for DS games...if you get another DS, get one of these http://www.r4ds.com/index-en.htm That is if you dont mind using an eye-patch and shouting 'aaaargh' like a 'pirate' *nudge nudge ;) ;)*

plus you can use 'DS colors' with it....which is like a mini-painter 9 on your DS, it blew me away when i used it.

it was about £210 worth of stuff lost because it was games too.
i think we might be able to get back about £100 or £150 from insurance though but thatsenough to get a new console anyway, and i will probably get one of those then.
Its annoying though because i got so far on loads of games!

Its been a while since I came to the UK thread! I missed quite a bit of action! Hope everyone is ok!!

I'd be up for a trip like that, depending on what time i'd need to get off work. I'm in liverpool now, so if everyone decided to come here i can probably put up about 6-8 people in my room... I'll probably be moving to a nicer place in a few months, so i might have more room then. I haven't been here long, so i havent had much of a chance to really check the place out, the weather's been a bit shit of late too. My first impressions were not very good though. The 'culture' is lacking in a lot of places, or is no where to be found if you travel about 5 seconds out of the centre. The centre seems like it could be cool and the clubs/bars i've been to are good. I haven't been to a lot of the main 'touristy' places yet, but i'm not sure there are that many anyway.(?) But i'm sure it will improve as the year goes on............

I'm gradually getting used to it. Finding out I had to move and moving happened quite fast and I had to find a house quickly, so maybe thats part of the reason why i didn't get a good first impression. I live in wavertree at the moment. Not a hugely great area, i'm sure you know (but by far not the worst) ;) It is less than 5 minutes walk to work though! Probably going to find a new place somewhere in the centre or near sefton park at some point, might even stay around here if there's anywhere nice i can find.

no its a load of bollocks. but i am the kind of person that tries on a WW3 with a teacher who attempts to assert any authority over them.

if your doing art at gcse its basically the same, at the end of the day you arent there to learn to draw- you are there to tick all the boxes on the teacher's criteria sheet so that the government has a statistical way of measuring your progress. i am probably one of the best artists in my school and im one of the only ones to not have not got an A at as level (i got a c because i dont do any work)

i am hoping the fun will start with a foundation course next year (if i get into one lol)

review of dr. sketchy's life drawing(thanks atastrophea for telling us/me about it)

well, started off with like a 5 minute dance courtesy of the burlesque dancer..she was quite fit... despite it being a 3 hour 'ting, all the poses were very quick, from 1 minute to 10 minutes, the longest one was 15 minutes (her last pose). it being hosted in a pub, you can jump up and grab a drink any time you fancy.

if you want to learn to be a better drawer, its not for you. you get no guidance, most of the people cant draw particularly well but theres a friendly atmosphere and everyones very chatty. the focus is on having a bit of a laugh, not drawing well... (i was a bit frustrated by this... i dont want to pay a steep £10 (plus tips) to have a laugh.

after each round of poses (there are like 4 or 5 rounds?) there is a break and the best piece in the room (funniest or most inventive) gets a kinky prize (maid outfit, firemans outfit etc...) worst prize was like, bratz lipstick or something. after the final round there is the big prize draw for the best piece in the room

also, the model was a lovely lady but she couldnt sit still for more than a second. it got worse the more she drunk....

on the plus side.... i managed to get in without paying the £10.. and i won the big-final-competition at the end!! (i got some really cheap oil paints, a magic 8-ball which suggests sexual positions, and some romantic bath salts...)

Hey tie its chris. i was sat on the other end of the bench at Dr Sketchys.
wrote up a whole sort of review of the day on my blog with pics and all that jazz on my blog

http://ozenafathoms.blogspot.com/

I wasn't drunk i swear. i had a great time fom my end. amzingly i dfound a whole crisp ten pounds in tact in my pocket. it completely slipped my mind to pay the door people. id got there abit early so id hit it at thier most unorganised. thats the second one i've been to. it was just as good fun as the first one i went to a few months back. great laugh. it is i think as you said. lacks in teaching you valuable skills in drawing but io think they aim for relaxed fun more than anything.
anyway, i'll be going again for sure.

they have dr sketchy's over there? i guess that started here - well, the whole circus/burlesque thing is strong here and it seems very sf..

to be honest, i'm not that big a fan of drawing people who insist on being a big part of the creative process. they're inevitably twitchy primadonnas who need their ego soothed and refuse to fucking sit still.

your mileage may vary :)

how's everyone then?

Molly
February 18th, 2008, 04:41 AM
hey DC - I read about dr sketchy in SF, had no idea one was here. Its a nice idea, but honestly, you could put that kinda gig together with all your friends and a bottle of booze. IMO a rip off. £10 to sit and have a laugh and draw shit? not a good way to learn if you wanna do it proper....

Dunno if I can make Manchester due to funds(Im saving for a dog); I'll know closer to the day of the meet, so....yeah.

I've been to Edinburgh Dr Sketchys a few times and it generally varies - sometimes the model is really great. It's most interesting with lots of props, the best time was a black tape and gas mask marie antoinette concoction, but there've been plenty of less exciting days. It sounds more serious too - one time there was a giggling hen party, but usually everyone is there just to draw.

Also its cheaper up here, varies between £3 and £7 depending on who is running it.

Atastrophea
February 18th, 2008, 02:01 PM
Hmm well I'm glad Tie won lots of lovely prizes (although a shame you didn't get a maids outfit, for some reason I'm thinking you could pull that look off... :-o lol. )

I liked the idea of having interesting/extreme models rather than your average, run of the mill, life model. Of course all figures are interesting to draw but sometimes its nice if they start off a little out of the ordinary to inspire you more (or differently)!

Having said that there is good burlesque and bad burlesque, just as there are good and bad life models. It does seem a bit over priced from the sounds of it - Maybe we need to start up a Lady McSketchalots and hire our own performance artists ;-)
