yeah, what you said - well done you, and everyone else. You all rocked my face off with your hardcore, and somewhat "mad" "skillz"

Would have joined in if i hadnt been a) completely lacking in any motivation b) hooked on Doom 3 :jawdrop::cheerleader:, and Onimusha 3 <3<3<3.

Lousy, yet addictive, time-sucking interactive entertainment!

Hey Fellas,

Back from Berlin :teeth: Saw the entrees and there is some goood stuff in there - from both sides. We all worked really hard. There are some quality concepts going on, paint & pencil work and character ideas. I really do hope we have another one, this one was so much fun!

On a high from the WS, this one is my favourite!
And Sketchlings first workshop- the man did do well. For an assignment one night, he managed more than just sketching a pretty girls face! (I'll let YOU tell us that one dude!)
Good to see Cartoonfox having fun and catchng up with some friends - ("the barstards!") and bagging an Andrew/Marko sketch from a character tutorial!
Fun was had by all, Germany is a rrreally cool place to hang out and draw...

i will post some pics the end of the week!

Cheers

Ok... as this is all pretty new to me, I wonder if any of you could kindly compile a list of (is the there is one) of big names in concept art? I really know nothing at all about this field :nohope:

Or books to read?

Or things to see?

Games to play?

Even if its really obvious stuff?

Thanks! :D

Hey;
I don't know if these are big names in concept art, but their bloody good.

Alex Kaiser thank you so much for the competition in the Seattle vs. UK drizzledome. We ended up challenging eachother last minute, and ran a little past deadline but more or less made it *crosses fingers that there's no disqualification*. You do some really great work and regardless of the outcome, we need to do it again;) Good luck to all who participated in the contest, and I hope that we can do more of these in the future... maybe Seattle/UK vs. The World? >:D j/k

Hello UK'ers

It's ma birthday this coming Saturday, and I'd really like it if all you's could make it. I know it may be a bit short notice, but I couldn't think of where to go or what to do. Generally now just getting drunk!

So, I'm going to The Crown And Sceptre, Great Titchfield Street, London.
It's not far from Oxford Circus(nearest), Regent Street, or Great Portland Street or Goodge Street train Stations.

I'll be there from like 4pm - till closing time, drink get some food etc...
Then on to a club for a boogie till early morn, maybe go down Old Compton street in SoHo for a late night snack!! If not, a few bottles of Vodka, and a chill-out at mine - who knows!

Please raise your hands if you can come! The more the merrier!
Also, I expect to see sketchbooks too, as I will definately be bringing mine!

So? hands? how many???

Okay, time for me to be serious for a moment. (It doesn't happen often, so please indulge me! ;) )

I was wondering if you could give me some advice please?

I've now finally got my website online (www.coolsurface.com (http://www.coolsurface.com) for those of you that are interested) and am going to seriously try to get an artistic job.

Ideally, I'd love to get a job as either a concept artist or games designer, but I would very happily take on any sort of job that involved art, eg. advertising, designing cd covers, editorial illustrations etc.
I've got no illusions that I'll be starting out on the bottom rung, and would happily take on an internship.

If any of you could offer me insight on how you've got to where you are today, or any recommendedations on how to get into a certain field, that would be gratefully appreciated.

Also, if any of you are aware of any good jobsites or open positions please let me know.

As I said, games design would be my first choice BUT I am open to any field that involves art.

Thanks guys, you're the best! :teeth:

Well done in defeating the Seattle crew everyone...

Thanks to Koshime and Sketchling for university advice, i've managed to get interviews at KIAD, Derby and Huddersfield so far for illustration/fine art. Maybe even Hull and Westminster too.

Kiad looks really good but its so far away, i'd miss my cat :evilmustache:
anyway, i'll just have to see what happens with interviews.

By the way, if in future anyone wants to apply to Sheffield Hallam, don't, unless you want a course thats all about Damien Hirst contemporary stuff and you also think life drawing and illustration have no place in a fine art course.

Bare with me Dave, theres loads of Job sites. Obvious ones are Fish4, workthing, monster etc... al.co.uk. www.totaljobs.com

This site is good for links:- http://www.skillset.org/careers/links/websites_advertising_jobs/index_1.asp

From that link "Grapevinejobs" is the best/has the most jobs.

Try the BBC if you want work experience, they always have some going. Would look good on a CV but is unpaid.

The government site has a surprising amount as well:- http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/cms.asp?Page=/Home

Found this last night too:- http://www.pertemps.co.uk/ Follow the link on the main centre section and click "specialist divisions" (to the left). Then at the right click theres a small drop down menu, click "Creative Recruitment".

Good luck Dave.

P.S. And if anyone knows of any basic jobs in and around Londond could they also PM me. Im not greatly skilled but im learning quickly and am very interested in anything related to creative industry's, graphics, media etc. And particularly 3-D design (ie product and industrial) as well as sculpture.
And im qualified upto A-level standard and have numerous GSCE's. :bashful:

If you want to get into games i'd say you've got to be a little cautious about where you end up. Having got into it myself to be "an artist", 8 years down the line i've barely touched a paper or pencil. It can be relatively easy to get in, but its REALLY difficult to find a position that actually suits your skills and strengths. I can count on one hand the number of companies who actually have an actual concept artist(s). And if thats the area you want to be in then it'd be probably be better to develop those skills first, rather than hope you'll be "trained up" on the job. Some of the best guys i ever worked with did just this > they were all established 2000AD artists before they got into games, and now they run their own effects company www.arkvfx.com

Nice work too!

Matt Dixon
August 26th, 2004, 12:25 PM
Pixelherder's absolutely right. Most concept work in the UK industry is handled by artists with other development duties - modelling, texturing, animation etc. Concept is generated early on in the project, then these guys move onto other tasks for the rest of the development time. I stand to be corrected, but I think Summer Pudding, The Brave and other UK games guys on this site all fall into this category. I certainly do.

In over a decade in the games industry, I've only met two artists whose sole responsibility was concept design. I'd guess there are no more than a dozen pure concept gigs across all UK based developers, and that's being generous.

You'll find it easier to get into the industry in a more traditional development role - texture artist, for example - and then hope that some concept work comes your way when people see what you can do but there's no guarantee that would ever happen. Ironically, it's probably less likely once you become a useful member of a development team. As Aidan says, you're probably best developing a solid portfolio and targetting concept positions directly, if that's what you really want to do.

Have you looked at illustration opportunities? It's generally not a huge moneyspinner, but it's a good way to bolster your portfolio with published pieces while turning over a few quid here and there, and it's something you can persue alongside a less satisfying day job, if necessary...

DavidCousens
August 26th, 2004, 12:52 PM
Aiden, Matt, thanks for your input here. I hadn't realised the situation was exactly like this. I was aware that any games design job would involve a lot more than simply drawing, but I didn't realise that some jobs involved so little of it.
It's a lot of food for thought.

It definitely appeals to me, although to be honest, I'm not sure where to start looking/advertising myself. It would be nice to do things like advertisements/magazine illos etc. Any suggestions/recommendations?

BTW thanks to everybody that's responded about this, it's realy helping me think about the future properly. (I'm starting to think that maybe my lecturers at college should've tried to prepare us a bit! :er: )

lowpolymatt
August 26th, 2004, 12:57 PM
In reply to all of this, we have a couple guys here at EA who do solely concept work. Most of the artists fall into being modellers/animators etc although they all do *some* concepting now and again. I've been doing this stuff for about a decade now and I rarely get much opportunity to do'real' art. I love doing stuff like this but thats not what pays my bills. I'd say be cautious about your decisions on this. Finding work as a concepter is a hard uproad struggle I reckon, considering the low number of people who ONLY do concept art.

I'd still like to do that though...if anyone was accidentally looking for...*hint*

*chuckle* yeah right....

Anyway, thats my 2p's

Matt Dixon
August 26th, 2004, 01:25 PM
Matt - Heh, Ross and Rachel ( ? ) were the two I was thinking of..!

Dave - Illustration is just something I do on side, so I'm far from knowledgable about the wider scene. For the sort of subject matter that's usually covered here on CA.org, you'll find there are quite a few opportunities in the US RPG press -

RPG.net (http://www.rpg.net) Has a freelancers forum, where open calls for artists are occasionally posted, and you can mingle with other artists working in the field. If nothing else, it's interesting to see the quality of work you're likely to be competing with.

ENWorld.org (http://www.enworld.org/forums/news.php) Also has a job vacancies sub-forum on their messageboards. If I remember rightly, this one gets more traffic, but more non- or low-paid offers as a result. Haven't been there for a while, though.

Reading through these forums, you'll soon pick up on the names of the independent publishers other artists are working for ( and bad ones to avoid! ). Many of these companies are happy to recieve links to online portfolios or submission via mail - check their websites and you'll soon get a feel for what's out there. Be aware that pay is low, and you'll be working for US dollars, which makes it worse. Follow up on a few posts, get in touch with a few AD's and see how you get on...

If illustration appeals, there are some useful reference books you could pick up that will give you some sensible advice on how to get started, what to expect, and give you lists of potential employers. Have a root around on Amazon. This is a good one to start you off - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0713669365/ref=br_lf_li_1_2/026-6692836-4974819

Good luck, Dave!

Are we going to challenge Dallas? Do we want a Seattle rematch? Are we going to throw down the gauntlet to Manley and the other front page bods? Do we even care? Who's going to organise it if we do? *ahem* Molly *cough*

Acclaim is ok if you dont mind working on games that very few people play. but the cakes and pastries delivery on Fridays is a big comfort.

As for full time concept postions, i can only echo what others have said. the fulltime positions are thin on the ground, but they are there if you are up to the task.

not necessarily, those delivery guys were the happiest faces you'd see all week

it must have been the satisfaction of knowing they were delivering something which was thourougly enjoyed by the whole building. something that the company itself cant do with its games, despite the talent that works/worked there.

Are we going to challenge Dallas? Do we want a Seattle rematch? Are we going to throw down the gauntlet to Manley and the other front page bods? Do we even care? Who's going to organise it if we do? *ahem* Molly *cough*

Seriously, I think it's probably best if we try and go right into another scrap if we're going to do it - we're still fired up from our victory, and there's still a bit of a buzz around to keep it exciting for everyone.

Feel free to ignore me, though. I'm full of gin.

Im up for Dallas, or Seattle, I dont mind. I'm fired up to do a digital piece this time so when Molly *cough* sets it up I'll be in on the ruckas for sure. Feel free to ignore me, though. I'm full of hobnobs.

I'm looking for info on t-shirt printers in London, South-East preferrably or as far west as Croydon, or alternatively in Central.
I'm not after crappy iron on prints either, screen printing please(or whatever other methods produce good results). As cheap and as good quality as possible.

Couple of questions as well though. What price am I gonna be looking at if i'm getting a few shirts printed at a time(ie 2-3)? How many colours can be put on a single design? and how does the amount of colours affect the price?

Thanks for any help, up up and away1 :\

How many Matts are there in the UK thread, I'm pretty sure of 3 (me, dixon, lowpoly) but are there any more?

Acuna the number of colours (usually upto five) depends on the amount you want to pay and the amount you pay is usually set at a cost per colour in my experience, due to them having to produce a new screen for each colour and cleaning up etc.

um, next meet is sunday 5th. dunno where we're gonna meet. some bar/cafe/pub? (a cafe would be nice)

um, yeah its dallas next, so go make a thread to challenge them. we will hall have to post some examples or our work, so dallas crew can easily find a chalenger. (most will post sketchbook threads (like me) i guess)

go molly, go. go make the thread in the lounge

ill post my sketchbook thread

I'm not bothered who we challenge, as long as we can expect a good fight, and a nice quick turnaround like last time. A Seattle rematch would be great, but let's have some fresh meat first.

What about judges? Do we want to ask the same ones ( seeing as they did such a great job last time ;) ) or go for different people in case they feel biased against the champions now? >:D

It was jetpack who suggested taking on Dallas, wasn't it? Does anyone know why he chose them in particular?

molly will be the organiser person, and i will help if she needs it ^-^

dunno why dallas, but i think they wanted to, so yeah, they will choose their chalenger and theme, just like we did.

so as molly is prob working right now (and i have a free day toady) eveyone who wants to join, send me a pm with your sketchbook thread, a few examples drawings etc etc. so dallas can easily see where everyone is with their skills.

hey all, ok i think its time to start organising the next meet up, to happen this coming sunday the 5th september.

as i dont live in london, i have no idea of the kinds of places there are for us, but im thinking just some quiet coffe shop somewhere, maybe with an upstairs where we can just all go and chill, draw and chat. that would be the best, as going to places like kew gardenss (although fun) we dont get anytime to draw really. at a coffe shop we will be drawing all day, which is what we want, right?... i sure do ^-^

so, molly, kim, you know of any nice places we could stay? im not sure how maybe peeps are coming this time round, but i have a feeling its gonna be a few more than before (maybe even 8/10) so we need a place with kinda alot of space. i think a coffe shop would be a perfect place. thats where the seattle group go sometimes.

i think it will start at about 11am to whenever. i will stay till about 7/8pm (as long as i dont miss the 11pm train, im cool), but peeps can go go home whenever

everyone who will be attending, if you could just post here, just so we know who to expect (obviosly you can change your mind, its not writen in stone ^-^)

so, everyone go looking for some cool places for us to stay. we just wonna sit and draw and drink and talk and chill (and maybe grab some food have way through)

hope to see you all on sunday

Acuna they will look at you funny and mumble if you go at them like a colour junky, some shops will demand a second set up/registration fee if you want more colours than the number of screens on their rotunda. This may sound like a back pedal but, I just don't want you to go into a shop and ask for twenty colours and get shocked by the price.

Hi Demo Jan,

Welcome to the forum, any questions etc, please dont hesitate to ask in this thread, or send a Private Message! Also, post a link to samples of your work, and join in the UK vs Dallas thunderdome. the link is in Cartoonfox's post above!

Right,

Cartoonfox, (please read ur PM's if you havent done so:))
I can't do Sun 5th Sept, as the in-laws are coming down to see the Edward Hopper exhibition in The Tate, and I'd like to go too. Plus they are the 'in-laws' so I must be hospitable.

MY Suggestions for the meet, if you guys go ahead, was to go to the
Wallace Collection, on Manchester Square, London. Its got loadsa Medievil Armour, Helmets, swords etc and a big Armoured Horse too. Invaluble references there. Its quite, and u can sit and draw....
Nearest station, is Bond Street Tube on the Jubilee & Central Lines.
From there, walk up to Selfridges, and take a left. Just get behind the Selfidges building, and you'll see Manchester Sq.

Its a quick suggestion due to the fact we aint gotta a house to go to.
And, I'd rather people got on with some work while at the meet. (Tony, theres some really cool references in there, you should check out!)
Then go to a cafe, and sit and draw a while.

If people want too, we could have another meet on Sun 12th Sept. We can discuss the Thunderdome with eachother, get crits and advice etc.

Cheers!

Yo all, I sent some work over to Westminster via email and they've got back to me saying they can offer me a place (illustration) which is nice, but surely an illustration course isn't going to be very different further north, since its a personal/subjective thing...
I'd like to go, but it seems so much more expensive than going to Hull, for example. Maybe good for contacts etc, but can't I get those from wherever i go? and be in less debt afterwards...
How do you all afford to live in london?

I also have hull, derby and huddersfield to choose from.

@young paddy1, thanks. I was thinking of either two-tone (not ska sadly 8) ) and some text so colours max. I'll try and find some decent local ones, yellow pages gave me some but all miles away.

I live at home so I can live in London quite easy. You will prob have to live in student accomodation (do Westminster have that) or other shit student place. It could cost alot and you WOULD need to work a few nights a week somewhere, prob 2-3.
Advantages of central London are its where all the exhibitions go and has access to anything you could ever think of, and then some. Maybe they teach alot of tracitional skills at Westminster whereas they might not at other places?

That place Molly suggested sounds good. Easy enough to get to.

One of the most important things with going to do anything )uni especially) is are you gonna be happy. Go and check out the places quickly, no-one notices if you wonder round and if they do just explain what your doing.

If youve never visited these places then I suggest you do, Ive known a person who went somewhere and came home after a few months, he hated the place. He'd never visited it before.

If your really not gonna be happy living however far away from home then dont, though id go as far away as possible :bashful:

Happyness isnt the be all and end all of studying, but it's quite importatn, the happier you are the better work you'll do (hopefully)

Only think I can suggest about London, is that the Museums are closer and free to enter. As far as living in London - dont ask. I am skint.(due to CA workshops, but thats beside the point) I didnt go to uni, went sttraight into working.
The flat I live in with my bf, was a treasure find. We pay £150 a week btwn us both. I wouldnt rule London out as Koshime said. You can apply for student residence I'm sure, or a flat share with 5 other people. That should bring the cost for living down a bit.
I am in debt, but I kinda got away with it. My year at college, were the last to receive government grants where you have to earn £15,000 pa upwards before paying the loan back. I dont know if that rule still applies now, but I'm sure you can enquire.
Hey, you'll be closer to the sketchgroup???
And, with CA you can make loadsa connections, that can help you out.
So, you never know, you could land the job you want as soon as u leave!

Dave - nice one! Troy, you should come down too, see what u think of London...

Dave - Hehe, ta. All you need now are a couple of next / previous pic buttons on the image pages and you're sorted. ;)

Troy - Try eBay for goods deals on Wacom pads. You'll still be looking at a few hundred quid for an a4, though. Check the Wacom Europe website for reconditioned tablets, but they're not all that cheap. Derby's supposed to have a decent student scene, but I'm a bit old and creaky to know about any of that malarkey. Think 'town' more than 'city' - putting it politely, it's not exactly a humming metropolis but you're close to Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Birmingham if you want big city action or shops. Derby's not a bad spot, and you're right next door to some great countryside if that's your bag. I grew up in Brum, and found Derby a bit small for my taste when I moved up - I live in Notts these days.

ok, so thats me, schlo-mo and acuna read, who else?

acuna i dunno where we'll meet. at pub/cafe/coffe shap (isnt that the same thing?) sounds fine to me, although i like the atmosphere in a coffeshop better than the pub, coffe shop is more quiet and..umm.. cleaner? ^-^

ok, no worries on the model, yeah just show me some pics and ill be happy ^-^ which creature did you choose anyway?

well, see you 2 (and hopefully others) this sunday.

i know there were a few late entries for the last challenge, and i was wondering if anyone could fill me in on that type of thing before i make a ....FINAL DECISION!!!

Back in Ireland for the week, haven't been around, Are you guys still meeting up on the 12th also?

Sketchling I owe you definately, thanks for buying a silly intoxicated Irishman a sandwhich and a giant coookiiieeee, (and finding him wondering around London) and anything else, I'm having mild memory problems. It was a great night. And cheers Molly for letting me crash on your couch! I'm sure I owe people cigerettes. erk......

Also sketchling, did you see gnomen are bringing out 2 matte painting DVD's buy Dusso, the matte painter I was telling you about in the bar. Sept 15 they going to be out. They look pretty good.

Alrighty. Need to go try pick a fight in the dallas challange.

and I went to Derby, Huddersfield, but it looks like i'll probably end up in Hull, if its not what I want I can always go somewhere else after a year.
I wanted to check Leeds out but its full...
Theres a direct rail link from hull to london so maybe that could be a good way of getting down to the meetings eventually.

i'll meet you at the entrance bit that goes up a slant and onto the road. not sure if there is more than one road entrance, but if i keep walking and acrosse the road, theres some steak house thing with a red sign (i allways see it). so i hope you know which entrance i meen.

phone me at about 11:20 to see where i am.

once we meet, i will phone schlo-mo, to see where he is, and arrange to meet him somewhere. and then at about 12 (we'll most probably be at a coffeshop by then) i will phone acuna_read and tell him to get his lazt ass out of bed, and tell him where we are.

Hope you all had a laugh today. I'm getting all excited again over this "somethingdome" work (have we decided on BEEF yet, i like beef, very emotive). I've been getting carried away with the concepting out stage and its turning into a small novel. The topic of " A hero returns" has alot of scope, but I'll stick with what inspires me the most.
Really tempting to write my concept up here but I think i'll give it a little while, or maybe when I have some very rough WIPs to go with it.

Now heres the million pound question.

For the final composition EITHER, pencil and then shaded, or painted with a tablet. I havnt has much practice at all with my tablet, this could be a good chance to practice with it, or the effort put into might drastically decrease the quality.

Hmmmm, well i'm really starting to consider coming down next sunday since theres alot of people attending and it'll be a good chance to work together on our projects.

I'll return with sketches :}

Hey Fellas,

I hope all had a good time on Sunday, the weather was superb for it:)

This Sunday - another meet. As many ppl attending as possible. I would really like to meet the other members of UK sketchgroup. Also check out ppls 'Beefdome' entrys, get some feed back, hang out and draw.
I had suggested a few posts back going to the Wallace Collection and taking ref from the armour there.

I'm still up for that, BUT, weather permitting, I'd like to take us all down to the Southbank of London, by Gabriels Wharf, which is right next to the Tate Modern. I was there this weekend, went to see the Edward Hopper exhibition.

Gabriels Wharf has some small cafes, pubs, seating area and mini grass areas we could sit on and plenty of people to draw. Its a cool place to just hang out. We could ask to draw the public, like we did in Berlin.

We could meet up outside the Tate Modern.
Nearest stns are Waterloo, Southwark & London Bridge.

any other suggestions for Sunday, please say!!!

@EVERYONE - Sunday - any suggestions besides going to the Wallace Collection? - Im hoping the weather will hold out for us so we can hang out in Gabriels Wharf afterwards.

The course i'm hoping to do is fineart/illustration, but because i'm going through clearing it isn't garunteed that i'll get to do it this year...
What I really want to end up doing is illustration/matte painting, but 3d modeling and that kind of thing is something I think I could perhaps get a job doing, for now..

Thanks alot, very useful ideas.

- An internship sounds interesting if it could pay enough to live, anyone want to elaborate on the idea? lowpolymatt :) ?

I don't want to raise your hopes too high, but those heads you posted look pretty fancy to me. There are guys here who's interview showreel wasn't as good as that. Hell, I sit opposite a guy who painted the Queen, and hadn't touched a 3D package in his life. Now he's modelling and texturing like a good 'un. As for the 3D thing, once you see a model you've made, animated and roaving around a world you've also had a hand in creating, you see how immensely rewarding it is. If I were you, I'd model and texture a couple of characters (4000 poly limit), a couple of low poly vehicles and if you can stretch to it, a building or two. Make use of every square inch of space on the textures. Huge expanses of unused texture space give programmers nightmares!

Send it to us at Lionhead, and I'll ask the head of art to have a look for you. He's inundated with showreels, but I'll see to it that it's seen by someone.

I hope this helps.

Or dirty_c's house is free, we go there draw, then hit the big bad outdoors!?!

Yes outside sounds like a winner, especially if the weather is as good as it has been today. I've Got no idea of things i might want to do for London, I was hoping you could all might be my guides for the day.

Anyone got any idea about what we might call it day? So i could roughly think about my return train ticket. I think the earliest I can get to london is Euston train station for about 12, i hope that will work.

Why I'm bringing it up now is i'm going away for a for a few days, and wont be back till the saturday night. Don't worry i'm hoping to do lots of work on my compition piece. That WIP thread has got me all excited but also in a panic. Molly, both your pieces look fantastic and very alive, i'm really looking forward to seeing more.

Dunno how late the last one went, but in general, the ones where we planned to do stuff tended to end earlier, cause people got tired and you just kinda get to the end of it. If we're just meeting in a given place and working together, it'd probably go longer.

Also, I'm really near central London, so I'm happy to come back here till early evening if we want to move on to digital work (which I'm very keen for, as y'all know)

Nice photo Sketchling, the boy on the ground is a good series...It reminds me of a 'bike stunt video' my friends and I made years ago, it featured a crying boy rolling on the floor for no reason, we found him that way...

Hyde park looks good

Yeh Koshime, Derby is pretty boring, nice countryside, which I like, but you can get to that easily from somewhere like Sheffield and go climb some rocks...

Thanks Summer Pudding, the situation has changed a bit so i'm going to be moving to Hull to study illustration. I'll see how that goes for a year, and if its good then i'll stay, if not I can treat it as a kind of 'foundation' year and find somewhere else.
Its nice of you to give me the advice about showreel etc, but its a shame I can't use your kind offer of getting it seen now. Maybe i'll check Lionhead out in the future and you'll get a showreel with some nice 3d work, but even better paintings on it :)

One day i'll come down and play freestyle frisbee with you all...
Acuna, the mullet is good, don't tame it.

The good news, I passed my bloody interview, so I am now in the North west Thames imperial school of anaesthesia starting November.

The bad news, I cant make it this sunday, becasue we're going to teh garden centre to buy plants for our new house, and ikea for our super duper design/art studio.

The plus side is, once I am workign in london, I'm free most days when i'm not on call. i start at charing Cross hospital, so dont want to see you buggerered or plastered in A&E ya heare *grin*

Oh, and i can probably meet up mroe often for CA meets and sketchling......

@BNB - dood, like dirt_c says, you cant post images here.
LINKS you can. When your replying, and you got the reply window up, look at the menu above the square you write in. Theres a little 'world' with a 'link' or 'chain' beneath it. This inserts a hyper link. Click there, and it will ask if you to enter text (like: click here to view work etc) AND THEN the url address for photobucket to your image.

PLEASE POST WIP in the 'W.I.P UK vs DALLAS' thread I made in the 'Sketches, Ideas & WIP Forum.

@BNB (again) POSTING IMAGES: when you got your reply window up again, look at the menu above the window your gonna write in. There will be a square with something that represents an 'image' in it - click there to insert the photobucket address to your image.
(Thats the address that starts with [IMG]http://blah.blah.blah/htm[IMG])

Hope this helps...

haha, thanks. this is the first time i've used textures brushes to this extent, so it was a crazy experiment really...

I just keep adding layers, use layer masks occasionally, but keep merging the layers to keep things simple. I tried things like putting down texture, and subtracting from it with the eraser using different brushes.

I used a few brushes from Lungbug's collection, but mostly standard ps ones with different modifications, like scattering, dual brush etc etc.
If you want i'll put together all the brushes in my list at the moment so you can play.
here's a much earlier version of the tank thing: http://www.lindrickgolf.com/patrick/tankwalker1.jpg

Very nice molly, very energetic. I like the contrast of the electric colours, and the dark skies. Although my eyes wern't drawn to the center image first, or not the right tornado form. I'm usless at giving crits though because I don't know what you might do to change them. Maybe you could put some brighter contrast on the right tornado.
I really like it though, i love swirly shapes.

Yo! FREEEEDOM! I have a weekend... sigh. might not have one for a while. Sorry for the radio silence, but work is hectic like never before. BUT in the next two days I shall PAINT!!! lets hope its enough!

Molly: Wicked girl! Can help with a few things though ( :blahblah: )

1) I notice that many people, me included, tend to make everything soft edged when it comes to digital painting. Here you have sharp lines, but not where they are needed... ie in all the things that are NOT the focus.. like the powerlines (that bottom right corner is a gorgeous image by itself by the way.)

2) Why have you made one side blue and the other red? I am guessing this would represent the path of chaos he is creating? I persoanlly think it needs some of the red-orange on the left too... the right works so well. His highlight from the explosion would be more effective then too.

3) Have you looked at tornado reference? check
http://www.chaseday.com/tornadoes-06.htm, especially the last one... you see the area of effect around the bottom...like when ya drop a book in dust... maybe play with that a bit on the sides or something (its happening on the right... which works well). It looks to me like it needs something to draw the focus back to the character itself.

4) Sorry if this is long :) but I thought It might be a good idea to break it down to warm/cool, dirty/clean, light/dark, saturated/desaturated contrasts... Your primary focus should draw the eye right away... those are the typical ways to do that. If your guy was warmer than the rest it would stand out, but the sky on the right is warmest, if your guy was the busiest area with calm around him, he would stand out, but the sky is just as busy as he is. If your guy had the highest dark/light contrast in the image your eye would be drsawn to him, but if you desaturate the image, the poles on the right and the power explosion are the highest contrast areas. (also his silouette, the thing we should instantly recognise, is very hard to define...his menacing character is partly lost as a result) And finally, the most saturated parts of the image lie in the background...

I would not put ALL of them into play, but some sharp highlights above that explosion, some highlights and touches of more saturated colour on him and especially the leading hand. Maybe something to define his silouette like a bit of rim light or make the clouds sky a bit closer to the sky tone/colour.

I love his attitude... now pull him to the front a bit! ;)

and where are the cows? hu hu?
;)
cheers

YO,yo,yo - well, now THAT was looong - BUT needed. As you can tell, I just slap the paint down and hope for the best, well, post here, and get you's lot to crit me.
I have printed out wot u have written above. I am greatfull for your input bro and advice. Yes, the right side works so well, it was really all by accident. I just slapped the color down, a few multiplying layers and painting. I do still need to add the cows (or herd of doughnuts..) and maybe a cars headlights in the fore arm of the Tornado. The one-side-warm-one-side-cool thang I got from a reference I saw on Getty Images. I'm trying to get the effect of a mass sweep from the Tornado, lfrom left to right like its just made its way sidewards before heading towards the foreground, hence, one side red the other blue. The power explosion needs more work, and the sky. I think I'll push the sky back more, to bring him forward, as you said.

Man, I best go and actually finish it....
Again, thanx bro, for you input - AND EVERYONE ELSE TOO!!

Yo!

Lookin good! Only advice I can think of is to make the highlights in the guy with the knifes's eyes a bit harder and smaller... but thats a nit-pick really. :) Good stuff.

And yeah. Have ahd a great weekend doing as little as possible other than painting, so I have produced something im proud of. I didnt want to have to rush it again like last time! Heres it finished (unless people think of something interesting or whatever for me to do with it? )

wow kim that looks awesome. How about putting a little but more detail into the closer surrounding people, either that or make them less distracting. Right now they are kinda taking up alot of attention but they arent very solid.
