I need advice from anyone in the south east(mostly London area).

I'm 27 and would like to start taking art classes and hopefully persue an art degree of some sort. Does anyone else have experience of enrolling in a school a bit later on in life and where to start? I don't have a portfolio and I grew up in the states so I have no clue which Unis are decent for art in my area. I'm particularly interested in Industrial Design but ultimately this is mostly just for personal benefit as I'm already sorted out career wise.

I did some looking at the Royal Art Academy, St. Martins, etc... look nice but I get the impression you need to have good grades/great portfolio?

Many schools in London may require a portfolio. I'm not sure what schools do Industrial Design in London, from my knowledge, none. Regards to evening classes, you may not need a portfolio, just enthusiasm.
Theres also these schools, but they are mainly fine art:
Slade School of Art - Holborn, C.London
The Princes Drawing School - Old Street - year long drawing course to accompany ones own progress...
Lavender Hill Studios - S. London
London College of Printing - Elephant&Castle - not too sure about this place..
The Art Acdemy- London Bridge - expensive, evening classes are ok

some sites that may help further:

Just got back from norwich arts institute... "foundation computer games art and design" IT WAS AWEFULL. Im a verrrry cross bunny. they had no recent work, and the quality of the concept work was PITIFUL. They had no art theory to speak of, and no one seemed to have any pride in their work. sketches were done on lined paper and scraps.
(aph where was your sketchbook!? you seem miles ahead of anything I saw!!)
Im angry angry angry.

the end.

on the other hand, all the other colleges, institutes and universitys i have looked at have been fantastic, particularly foundation at falmouth. (illustration was jaw dropping.)

it's all a matter of how many stops, the more stops the cheaper it gets. Also the longer it takes(about 20 hours was the longest I found)

Also what day you fly. This applies both ways.

I'm flying on the 1st Jan with BA direct. It takes about 10 hours and costs £450.

But there were other options some of which actually went via Amsterdam and a stop on the eastern seaboard of the states.

Also the closer we get the more it will cost.

cheers Phil

Ello :) Just posted this somewhere ad figured it might be useful here. The old anatomy book debate :D Also I have a few books im throwin out so shout if ya want em. (I have only so much room on my bookshelf and I have ian mccaig's shadowline coming....)

anyways, here it is:
I have bought so many life drawing books and tried so many different methods of drawing the figure, but it was only Vilppu that really taught me what I needed to know. The others contained great knowledge, but they did not TEACH you well. The first few chapters of vlippu are utterly indespensible. Once I had a grip of form like he preaches, all my other books are becoming useful. You cant learn anatomy till your brain can break things down to simple chunky forms that will actually stick in your memory.

But anyways, the best books and resources on drawing the human figure for me would have to be

1) Vlippu drawing manual (fantastic start to get strong basics..the exercises really WORK)

2) Bridgeman - Brillliant to make you understand chunky forms and hard-soft edges. Some of the most beautiful drawing in an anatomy book iv seen.

3) drawing force - http://www.drawingforce.com/ AWESOME for understanding what gives figures life and energy. His video's are great.

4) Figure Drawing Without A Model -Rod Tiner
This book is an excellent book as it covers a hell of a lot that iv not seen anywhere else such as how fat changes the face with age and how different body types tend to have certain facial features and other tid bits. Also it talks about strategies to train your brain to draw from the imagination. Defiinitly one of the best books iv ever seen
Amazon
AmazonAmazon

I dont advise Buying the hogarth book... His stuff is very rounded all the time and rather odd. Good for understanding volume, but he only does spherical volume, and seldom hard, cube volume like bridgeman and the others. Go for bridgeman rather. That said, there are a few useful shortcut tips that i have seen in there... just not as good as the rest.

Hope those help. If anyone wants
how to draw comics the marvel way
how to pencil comics the marvel way
Manga mecha books
cartooning books
Shout. Im chucking them out cause iv got better ones and I hate the marvel production-line look.

DavidCousens
November 8th, 2007, 10:51 AM
You're absolutely right, Kim; Force is an excellent book, (I had to review it for Advanced Photoshop magazine recently) it really opens your eyes to thinking about WHY we move the way we do I'm going to have a look for that Villipu drawing manual now that you've recommended it, thanks for that. I'd be curious about the "Pencil comics the marvel way" book and maybe the Manga mecha books as I'm expanding my library somewhat at the moment--artbooks are my new hobby.

Maybe we could start up a UK book exchange as I have "Photoshop for Video", "Adobe Photoshop layers", "The Painter 8 wow book" and "500 Manga characters" which I'd be happy to send to new homes if anyone's interested?

Vlippu drawing manual (fantastic start to get strong basics..the exercises really WORK)

I'm after more anatomy stuff, I printed out the Loomis stuff from a pdf (I can look as a computer screen when Im drawing for 16hrs a day, but 5 mins trying to read text on a screen and I get a huuuge headache)....have you looked at the loomis stuff....and if so how do they compare?

November 9th, 2007, 10:42 AM
Bridgeman's the best anatomy book iv come across. I can see from yer sketchbook you already got a good head for form, so I see where yer coming from.

Anyways, Good to see a bunch of ya at the impromptu meet last night. :)
My colourwheel - swatches are available now here:

http://www.sketchling.com/sketchlings_swatchwheel.aco

Hope people find them useful. Remember that for it to form an actual colour wheel it has to REPLACE any existing swatches so save any you want to keep, replace them with mine and then append your old ones after. The wheel breaks if the first block is not in the first position in the swatches.

Bridgeman's the best anatomy book iv come across.

I bought the Bridgeman book after reccommendations in this thread (it may well have been yours, sketchling) and I am curious how everyone uses it.

Do you read through it and then set it aside, letting it influence your life drawing studies?

Do you go through it systmeatically copying the illustrations, trying to memorize the content?

Do you just keep it open on your desk and constantly refer back to it whenever you're working?

:xpld:

Is it realistic to hope that one day you'll be able to draw perfect poses from your imagination, or is this book just part of a range of reference material that an artist has to become familiar with, but eventually come back to time and again?

It's a mixture of everything in that list for me. The "Force" book made me think about how to draw forces and balancing figures which has an overall improvement in everything you draw. I'll occasionally draw a series of thumbnails to get poses into my memory and sometimes when I'm drawing a figure, I'll check up on the musle anatomy if I'm not too confident with it.

You get a certain memory for anything you draw, and just like exercising, the more you draw the "fitter" your memory becomes. I'm not sure anyone can become a living library of every pose, but you'll certainly be able to remember a good few, which will in turn inform others. There are certain poses I can knock out without thinking these days. And I can still draw Super Mario's head from memory because I drew him so many times as a kid! :)

Hope that helps mate!

Molly
November 10th, 2007, 10:55 AM
I go thru my anatomy book and draw what I need to draw when I'm unsure, it's then added to my brain knowledge of anatomy to use later.

Going through page by page I think is best. You develop and understand as you go along. Reading thru, then putting the book down isnt IMO a good way to learn. THeres too much to take in, and you end up going back to the book anyway....

Cheers Kim for the swatches!!

no, we'd certainly be up for meeting up for anything! we dont really know where to go after it gets to evening time.
we're going to try to hit up the Tate Modern, the British Museum, and probably the Imperial War museum over the next couple days (went to the Eye and the National Portrait Gallery today). we can meet up with anyone else during the daytime too if anyone wants to wander around with us, just send me a pm. i'll let you know where we're headed to and when, we sort of plan it in the morning when we head out.

i'm here through sunday, and then off to paris. i think sam is here through monday or tuesday.

also, i know its a long shot, but if anyone has floor space or a spare couch for use to crash on, we'd love to get out of the shitty shitty hostel we're staying in in southbank. its been practically impossible to sleep (here i am right now!) we've only slept maybe 2 hours over the past 50 hours. it suuuuucks.

Happy Birthday Cai =)
Glad you and void are going to Seattle too heh =)

What time/place is the meet in London on Fri?

Molly
November 22nd, 2007, 04:31 AM
OMG too! Wesburt - is it Sam Brown whos with you??? Shit man, would love to meet up with you guys!

This Friday, we will be meeting at Nandos, on Frith Street, in Soho, nearest Stn is Tottenham Court Road on the central line (theres 4 exits)or Leicester Square Stn on the piccadilly line underground - we should be there from 6.30pm, seated downstairs...

Wesburt/Sam - If you have time, you could go visit the Hunterian Museum, in Lincoln Inn Fields - lotsa dead things, animal and human skeletons(of all ages), body parts an stuff...pretty cool. Its in The Royal College of Surgeons building, on the 1st floor; you just need to let the front desk know where your going - its free btw:)

Theres an Egypt exhibit all the way over in East London, in the 02 center, (formally Millenium Dome), nearest tube North Greenwich on the jubilee underground line - BUT tickets may be difficult to get hold of due to popularity, it may be daily, like first come first served kinda thing...

Theres the Victoria & Albert Museum, in South Kensington - sculpture, fashion, painting, design - round the corner is the Natural History museum, and the Science Museum - which is pretty cool; the Tate Britain & Tate Modern - (tate modern IMO is alright, a mix of modern are and stuff - the buildings cool, but in my experience a bit of a let down)
the Tate Britain houses better master pieces...

If the Hostel in the Southbank is shit - I'd suggest Cartoonfox's idea and crash on his sofas! The Metropolitan line up to Cai's aint that far and beats a shitty hostel!!!

It was good to see everyone last night in what was possibly a large outing in Nandos, with our special MB guests Wesburt and Sam. It was a good atmosphere where Sketchling was demoing some general digital art techniques, and cai and adam doing their thing and Molly being tourguide for places to see in london.

Unfortunately because it was so large I dont think we got to meet everyone intimately last night.

yeah but not one on the weekend like normal when a lot of other people can get there due to college/ uni /work.
And those meets tend to be only london folk who go as far as i know, if a date was thrown out here, im sure a lot more people would travel rather than just those who go weekly
Thats if its London for the next one
I know theres weekly london meet ups, but its difficult for a lot of people to them frequently, and costly too, it would cost me about £30-£50 for a return on the train to get to london, just for a few hours on a friday night or whenever it is. If it was a day rather than a couple of hours its a lot more worth while

I don't mean to cause trouble but that looked a bit over the top, I think Chee stated that there have been a number of meets because somebody else said there hasn't been any.
Not really. Every time someone tries arranging a big meet he goes on about the ones that have been happening in London, as though that's perfectly sufficient. He also doesn't believe in democracy and patronises my efforts to make locations/dates fair enough so most people can make these events.
I dunno if you were around then but, before, Christian (Dirty_C) and I used to organise meets where people from anywhere in the UK could meet up for a day or two and go see exhibitions and make the most of spending at least a full DAY with creative people in fun surroundings. Some of us have made great efforts to make these meets, spending around £100 per visit (bare in mind that most of us are students with part-time jobs at the most).

All I'm saying is,
a.) Not everyone's from London;
b.) ...nor do we always want to go there;
c.) It's not fair on people who have to travel great distances and have to pay a whole lot more on travelling just so the Londoners can stay in their cosy element. How many Londoners, seriously now, made the effort to get up a bit earlier and spend a bit more cash to see the rest of us in the previous Bristol/Manchester/Cardiff/Oxford meets? I'm aware that there have been unfortunate incidents along the way, but overall it's pretty appalling.

So no, I'm not going over the top, and I'm not being moody; this has been going on for ages and has been discussed here and on MSN/phone.

dr-yes-no-and-maybe: Cheers for the heads up :) Will see what everyone else thinks.

lefran
December 28th, 2007, 07:54 AM
somebody else said there hasn't been any.

Oh, i know theres been local meets, ive been to a few bristol ones myself, its just nice to have the larger full day meets i think, and there hasnt been one of those since september. I'd just like to see you guys again!

I dont really mind where it is, manchester was good last time, ive not been to milton keynes before. I dont mind london either as i quite like london. The Oxford/ Bristol one was good too, that animal museum was really cool.

I dont really want to be a part of any argument, but i did seem that Koshime was suggesting that because we havent been going to london meets thats our fault kind of thing? , if that wasnt your intention then i apologise, its just why i think naomi and i posted back. I would love to be able to go, but it would cost me an arm and a leg every time. Im sure it might be the same for a few others, so to organise a full day once every month, two months, would sure be a lot less costly to most.

Also, as true as many things that have been said are by Naomi, i dont disagree, its just i think that maybe organising meets in bad terms might not be the best of ideas, because we wouldnt want to argue over something thats meant to be fun, and end up ruining something that was previously long running. I think if maybe everyone takes on board what has been said, as the things naomi listed are true, but we dont really want to make a good thing suddenly bitter on many counts if lots of people argue. (Naomi this isnt aimed at you, i just mean if anyone else is gonna pipe up).

So, does anyone else have any ideas of locations, exhibitions? also dates?

I'm planning a move to the big smoke, so I'll hopefully get in on this laaandan action when I get down there, but as for a lil meet my preference would be Manchester (purely for selfish northern reasons....I know for a fact that Milton Keynes is a great many more pounds for me)... plus I quite fancy a trip to Aflex Palace cause I need some more jeans and my favourite jean shop is in there:). Never met any of you lovely peoples so would be good to have a little arty excursion and see what all these avatars actually look like in person. I have no idea what the gallery situation is there, I just googled a lil and the Urbis looks like it has some fun design/uni stuff at the moment (till feb): http://www.urbis.org.uk/exhibitions.asp and there's a manga thing starting in march which I'd quite like to go see too.

Sorry - but Milton Keynes??? Theres fuck all round there. No Galleries, No museums- and its FULL of roundabouts. No, no way, NOT Milton Keynes..Bristol, Liverpool, Nottingham, Norwich, Manchester, Bath, Brighton, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow- YES.. absolutey NOT Milton Keynes....

Naomi - chill out.
Koshime - stop making a point about the London meets; if someone here wants to organise one, let them, just dont post that theres been trillions of London meets, cos it dont help

EVERYONE ELSE:
If you are down in London - or wherever for the day, make a post and hopefully people may be able to join you;

If you plan on going to a museum or gallery for the day and fancy some company at short notice - make a post and hopefully people may be able to join you;

If you want to plan whatever you want to plan - make a post and hopefully people may be able to join you;

If your idea of fun is running naked in the street - make a post and hopefully people may be able to join you;

There are no set rules as to HOW you should organise a meet, or if you want to hang out with people for a day, 2 days, a week or a bloody month.

.....I'm off to organise all the boxes of biscuits I got for christmas, because its more hard work than this thread...

I think it must literally be a guy and girl thinking mentality difference.

Woman says: no meet.
Man thinks - hmm there have been some

Woman implies : no general meet but local meet. makes sense now...

And we get all the stick from the women folk. Blaady heck. (whats with the london is the best issue. I've not said any of that shite....)

A 2008 general meet would be a good idea (somewhere not so wet due to the worst of winter coming up)
so perhaps a Bristol or Sheffield meet

For gods sake...
Chee, your still not helping. EVERYONE knows of the little-London meets for the London folk we have, but they are NOT a full on UK MEET. Which is what Naomi was talking about. Its very simple to understand, none of this man, women shit your chatting about, your being a condesending neanderthol...

Naomi, I understand how you feel, but theres no point getting so worked up about it. Im sorry some of the Londoners haven't made the effort to come up north, to Bristol, or Cardiff or Manchester, or meet you when your in town - but I'm sure we have our reasons. Mine is I'm freelance, and dont get paid regular monthly wages, so I gotta keep my pennies. Your a student, and in a similar situation, so we do know where your coming from.

It shouldn't be such a headache to organise a UK meet for the future. We got people moaning left, right and centre, spending useful energies on a situation that can be easily solved.

Ok, well beside frozen caveman jokes and jibes aside (honestly, it didnt seem clear to me, but when i looked at it from a mollyesque view, it made some sense)

There is a weekend brighton/hove pilgrimage in the first 2 weeks of jan
to meet up with Hurri/Foxoo.

From London (victoria or other train stations) - there are multiple trains heading to brighton or hove (and if you miss one, you can take the GATWICK express and reconnect).

From our experience (myself and sketchling) it's probably worth taking an early 8-9 am train as it takes around 1.5 hours to get there...and if you arrive at noon, it doesnt leave enough time to sketch....before it hits dark...

Hello UK people :)

I can't sleep! why is it when you reach 6am and your still awake there is no way of turning your brain off? *eyes fall out of head* *sigh*

So...... I'm having a moment of early morning inspiration here that involves thinking about MA/Post-Grad courses that are relevant to concept art in the uk. I've never really considered that as an option before Where does one start looking? I'm in my final year at Wimbledon at the moment and haven't really considered what happens next :O :[

p.s. sorry if I hijacked the argument about meets, If anyone wants to come and visit Wimbledon and sketch the Wombles sometime let me know ;)

hahahaha - hijack all you like!...
Ya know, I have noo idea about courses relevant to concept art in the UK, sorry.... Check your UCAS book, or google. You may find that anything relevant will be Illustration or animation courses - what about Industrial design? you could try that...good luck

So, Wombles in Wimbledon? Is it open season then?

Well, a suitable shotgun should suffice for a large Womble;

Anyhoo - some advice if curiosity gets the better of you...
DONT DO IT!

I have a smollen lymph node in my neck. I checked in the mirror to see...er...to see what it looked like, and then proceeded to 'tactile test' which part of my throat hurts, I end up prodding the lymph node, causing terrible pain in my neck up to my ear, difficulting swallowing and tears to my eyes! - A split second after, it did cross my mind, I shouldnt have done that...

Ok, thats all for today. Have a wonderful New Years - chat to you in 2008!

Does anyone know of a particularly cheap online supplier of Sculpey 1lb blocks and sculpey III 20z blocks ? I've been trying to do a bit of google research but needle and haystack syndrome set in, so I thought Id ask the other uk bods before I place my order.

I normally buy it from the uni shop but I need more NOW!!! (or at least ASAP) ;)

Is this meet-up business open to anyone? do I have to do any daring and courageous tasks to pass the test?! ...and how do you know what each other looks like? or do you just turn up and find the table spouting philosophy, pixel dimensions, and other arty goings-on!? :D

Well CSM are a bit pants in my oppinion but thats partly because of a lot of the people there are um well not my kind of person I guess and also they are another one that seems to rely heavily on its name from what I've experienced (did a portfolio life drawing course there, saved up the -lots of-pennies, travelled to london for a week- it was exactly what I'd already been "taught" on my AVCE at Oxford College of FE only I'd say with less of the teaching part :wtf: )

Wimbledon, I may be biased ;) but a lot of my friends and coursemates did it and enjoyed it, but then my degree isn't an illustration based one so it might not help for that.

Don't know about the other two, may I ask why you are particularly intrested in uni of the arts london courses?

I'm most jealous of my best mate who did graphics/art A-levels followed by a foundation in Norfolk (Norwich?) As he knows so much about traditional techniques mediums etc and perspective and everything that I somehow managed to get to this point without really learning about!!! Plus his creative identity has been fostered well and he's never afraid to experiment and really believes in himself, which seems to me the best advantage of all.

In UK, I'd advise against doing any concept art or computer games related course. Game companies prefer artist from traditional or alternative backgrounds to help create a RICH mix within the cartel of cocnept artists it hires.

i dont have any recommendations, just hope you have more luck with your course that i'm having with mine, as nice as the tutors are, i really havent learnt anything, theres not really any teaching involved at all so im left to my own devices, which is ok by me i guess in a way because i can still produce portfolio work, but i have genuinely learnt more from CA than any form of art 'schooling' ive had so far. Its frustrating when you ask a question and they dont know the answer so waffle on about somthing non related just to appear to be teaching. In some cases i know more about certain things, which can't be good! That sounds like my whole university degree....I know how that feels and as you say, there is the benefit of having total freedom, but it's pretty pathetic, esp considering the money they get...I too learned more from CA than I ever did in "education". Unfortunately, in my experience, this is generally the case with Degrees in the UK. At the end of the day you are working for 3 years for a piece of paper that gets you a foot in the door for interviews, thats it. Think of it like a driving test...you only really start learning how to drive once you've past and have gone out by yourself for the first time. Also its hard to find decent and experienced tutors because if you had the choice of working in your chosen field for a large salary, or teaching your chosen field for half that salary, which would you choose? So the people that didnt do too good at work will teach.

Dont let me scare you, this is a big generalisation caused by my own experience and others i know. Im sure not all degrees are like this, and in any case its worth going to Uni just to experience the uni lifestyle; partying and mingling with other arty types! :P

Last note....your portfolio will get you the work, not your degree. The degree is only a type of leverage over someone of equal skill applying for the same job.

p.s. I studied graphics BA(hons) in Surrey. 3 years was enough to know i didnt want to use my work to manipulate stupid people into buying crap products. Iv still got that useful leverage at the end of it though ;)

January 10th, 2008, 05:45 AM
Long story short,
some art degrees may teach you some interesting theory and "accessory skills or shools of thought" but otherwise, all that free time should be cultivated to find yourself as an artist, maybe generate a stronger unique self/style and at the final year of the degree, have had a year of freelance experience and a solid portfolio to boost and already arranged an internship/work before graduation.

That at least is the ideal masterplan, so to summarise:

Foundation: Generate sufficient basic knowledge/skillset
University: Learn to play the game, know which teachers are prats, and those that can help you network with more knowledgable artists. All your future networking starts here, your future rivals, or peole in the industry. Its a VERY small world, strangely enough so dont piss too many folks off
Year 2: By this year, you should have started doing regular freelance work and if not, start doing so and approach various companies requring freelancers to complete/start their projects
Year 3: Portfolio assembling and concreting your skillset. 6 - 8 months prior to graduating, start applying for job interviews and ensuring your "piece of paper" is achievable.

At the end point you'll have either got a decent job in a startup or established company, or enjoyed all that freelancer work you go freelance solo. G luck! And live the dream! (at least make sure it pays as well!)

hahaha - Koshime, I like your set plan, but, you should've put at the end: *requires will power, and thick skin in case it doesnt go as planned*

..maybe we should start our own school...I bet we could fill it....

*requires will power, and thick skin in case it doesnt go as planned*

applies even if it DOES go to plan.

I guess, I assumed the parts about

1/ hard work
2/ diligent study
3/ some talent
4/ oodles of Luck (right place, right time, right network, right presentation of portfolio)

5/ most importantly, lifelong dogged determinance

but there you have it. The SECRET. oooooh!
Welcome to Life's catalog of how to be a artist.....:)

NB: (if you watched the secret, life is a large catalog of what you'd like to select - hmm, I'll have that fur coat, I'll have the nice car thank you, I am living that nice house, I am friends with paris hilton, Oh, and dine out with Dylan Cole whilst expousing the finer points of matte painting, and so forth...)

you know molly, joking aside, i think you are right in a way. There must be room in the UK for an art school that does things differently to what is currently offered over here in blighty. There are so many young artists that want and desire a more intense and skill based experience than the british degrees offer. I did mine in Fine Art, i worked very hard and had an amazing time, but i would have loved more tuition and skill development so much. I think the best skill my degree gave me was (a completely unfounded!) confidence.
I think if someone started up a course similar to the American ones available that it could be incredibly successful. Hell i would probably do another degree myself!

yes, vlad.

we require the blood of twelve virgins, sacrificed to the dark one in an appropriate ritual upon the next full moon.

after this is complete, the clouds will part and your next path will become clear.

crap. I accidentally killed 13 virgins, does that mean I have to keep the last one? I hope Gordon 'the dark one' Brown doesn't mind :S

...you can definitely tell this is a British group!

btw Hi Vlad :) Im new on this group also. Im assuming your not born and bred British? (judging by your name that is?)

:D- I'd be happy to start it, with a bit o' Lottery money and some industry sponsorship, we can rival those yanky tarts anyday.....(<--ssshhhhh! might get in trouble for saying that - dont tell on me!)

I mean, Irish International got away with it for years....I could buy myself a Baroness title over the net....

Koshime pretty much said it all!
And yes, i know nothing of camberwell and inner london foundations.
Atastrophea Hey man, where abouts are you?
dr-yes-no-and-maybe Mate Aylesbury is about 30mins from where my parents live and i grew up, i can't imagine it's good for promoting creative potential.
You guys been on the 280 much? :P

And i don't think Brizzle is too bad as far as art courses go, but i do have some awesome course mates to teach me a lot, so i can't support year on year. Ask MrMan for a more rounded opinion, he's just started.

Hope you are all well

Hey hey :)

Well done on Falmouth and Bournemouth interviews Dr YN&M :D when are they? (we can all send you lucky luck vibes even if you don't need them ;) )

Tie - you were spot on with your CSM people guess, I was just trying not to sound judgemental and like a nice person, lol, but honestly some of them make you want to beat your head against a wall ;)

Badger, for the next ooooh, lets say 12 hours, that would be a tiny village in the middle of nowhere vaguely in the vicinity of Chipping Norton after that its back to Wombleland until easter holidays-woop woop! :)

I really wonder where they fit in time for teaching with all the enormously long holidays we have....ah I get it. "self directed study" duh.

was less of a guess because ive already been told by my teacher that some ual people are a bit up their own arses. but i guess a lot of art students are like that- i heard camberwell was worse and when i went for the open day they looked like a bunch of skinny jeaned, floppy fringed wankers. mind you that does include a few of my mates at camberwell.. but i wouldnt want to turn out like them anyway, they cant draw

regardless, 'pretentiousness' doesnt really bother me, the thing im most interested in is A. quality of teaching (traditional arts please) and B. social life

oh shit, im wearing floppy jeans!... wait... skinny! noooo... but i did get grimaced at by a girl who said she was going to csm... so im not impressed.

both interviews are in febuary (12th for fal) (27th for bourne)

Scary.

but im pretty confident, my portfolio isent that killer... but im pretty chuffed with my sketchbooks...

thanks for the support!

Going by the good old http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=65644 thread, it seems you have made a good decision. Make sure your portfolio has a range of work in, but perhaps more importantly, sound keen in the interview. Talk about your work confidently, generally sound like your really up to the course. Where I go they care for work yes, but they cared more about how keen I was to do the course.

Make sure you mention about the family and friend artist links. They will want to hear this.

John.D
January 13th, 2008, 06:17 PM
Your sketchbook thread is looking good, keep posting. Make sure you take stuff to the interview that isn't related to your sixth form work. They will want to see that you are dedicated to art work in your free time too (clearly you are).
Do you have any 3d or photography based work? Take that too.
Remember it's a foundation course. You will learn more about art and about yourself than you ever have done, and you will be able to focus on your specialist subject (usually in the second half of the course (where I am now) the first half is basically trying out all the subjects - generally fine art, photography - graphics (sometimes connected), fashion/textiles and 3d design - some colleges/universities have more). You will typically get free reign to do what you want to do (yes, you can put all the 'fantasy isn't art' crap behind you). Just enjoy it.

And if you get into Bournemouth you have Quicksilver to guide you around, that can't be too bad can it? :)

also mention CA- i mean, the fact that you hang out with a thriving community of amateurs and very professionals alike is quite relavent. if you havent been to one of the meets so far just lie and say you have. we usually go to a gallery or museum, and go to the pub and/or nandos. you can leave out the pub/nandos bit

also thanks for the wisdom people, this is helping me too; im also in the whole foundation course bit

Tie: Hey! I'm doing foundation at Camberwell atm, and true, there are quite a number of skinny jeaned, floppy fringed.....people, but if you can look past those floppy fringes, they are ok. Unfortunately I cant say the same about their art though, its just......different. But there are usually 1 or 2 people (I have 120 fellow illustrators in my class), whose work make me go 'yay, I'm not alone'.

p/s: I'm new to this thread. Hello. I'm Malaysian born, but have been residing in London for 8 years of my 18 year life.
