Managed to 'finish' my ChoW entry. PoshSpice entered too. =) Beautiful as always, Aly! Lookie at the threadie (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=102426)

Good luck! I'm not aiming to win - actually making it to the poll is good enough for me! lol

So is there gonna be a Brizzle meet? Would be heckuva lot kinder to my purse, that's for sure :nohope:

Nice entry Naomi! I like the way its more subtle than the others. A lot of the other entries seemed a bit over the top in my opinion.

Posh you make it look so easy :P. I'm loving that metal!

I'm gonna have to start entering these Cows and chows more often. I think I have only ever entered 2 cows. First things first..a new monitor and tablet :[

There wont be a Bristol Meet till October. But i'll speak with Lorenzo and get the date set early. It'll most probably be in the Week Fran, so you might wana crash at mine.

How are people feeling for a thunderdome? i'm guessing you are all summering about doing that kinda stuff, so maybe leave it for a while? not sure.

SoooOooo.....London meet, anyone? 'fraid I can only make it if I'll be popping by anyway, so I could probably join you guys for lunch on a Sunday sometime, but if you guys wanna conjure up a big meet some other day then go ahead, though TheGnoll will only be 'round 'til 19th of this month so it'd be nice to give a nice lil British welcome to the guy.

What date(s) do you reckon you'll be free to meet up?

If the Brizzle meet can't happen 'til October then I'm not sure if I'll be able to go, as I'll be in Bournemouth and probably skint as hell ;P Who knows....

How's everyone anyhoo? This thread's been a bit dead lately.

Ello all! :) Yeah, ill try make a meet if I can. only weekends though. Its all stupidly hectic in my life at the moment. I have been on a whirlwind introduction to conceptarting... designed two dragons n done front side, etc etc etc, made a full troll in sculpey after discussing some troll designs in my sketchbook with terry pratchett... kinda jumpin in the deep end!

Good fun though... I had forgotten how much fun it was makin things with my hands. And all this involved very little digital, so a great change of pace.

:) I hope to see everyone soon! Its been too long!
P.S. Sculpey is the coolest stuff... ever.

Hi Everyone
Long time lurker, first time poster. :bashful:

sketchling If your a Terry Pratchett fan you should get yourself to Liverpool. There is a Josh Kirby exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery which is really good. The rest of the gallery is well worth a visit too.

Kim: Sculpey rules!! It's soooo nice to work with compared to other clays. Glad to hear you're having fun ^_^ Hope to see ya at the next meet.

sketchling Nice one man! I bet it makes a nice change from being in front of a computer screen. Ive always wanted to try that sculpey stuff. I used clay to try and make a cyclops once, but the clay was too heavy so it sank through the armature :(

So it's up to everyone else really, see who's free during the week to meet up with ya. Hope you enjoy your stay in London! :) Be sure to drop us a line when you get home (safely!!)

Ahh cornwall nice! I remeber the seagulls being deadly there, they'll nick the cornish pasties right out of your hand and I heard they killed a man once!

Has anyone ever worked for people who constantly ask for perfection? I have been doing some architectural drawing for someone, it was all good and well at first, but he constantly asks for changes every time a take it back to him; tiny little details. At first i thought he wanted an artists impression, but it is becoming that he once a superacurate photoreal image. Is this sort of thing common in work??
AGH it is quite infuriating!

Yes hope you are all getting on well, congrats on the results fran, high score!!

sketchling
August 28th, 2007, 04:37 AM
the trick with something like that is make it clear from the start that you will do x amount of changes after you first show it to him, thereafter, he can change to his hearts content but you will charge for your hours worked. Its amazing how decisive the word 'charge' can make a client. This way you are still saying 'yes, anything you want' so they feel like you care... but the option of more money spent might not be worth it, so THEY decide not to do more. Clients will hate it if you decide that. They are always right, but money can herd well. Hope that helps. (they will always change whatever they can if its free)

Hmm I propose we arrange one Massive UK meet spanning over a number of days. The yanks cant be having all the fun over there and I cant see them having a European workshop any time soon.
If we can get the attention of our fellow European neighbours then I'm sure we could make a real big event out of this. Sure we wont have big screens and fancy atelier painters but we will have plenty of fun and beer!

What would be the best date for an event like this? I'm thinking sometime early next year.

So who's with me on this? I seriously want to get the ball rolling.

Rich.

The rate for workers aged 18-21 will rise by 15p to £4.60 an hour, while workers aged 16 and 17 will get a 10p rise to £3.40 an hour.

yeah sorry i misread that then, i think your on minimum wage now

Thanks Lefran and Mr man, damn, that is really sucky, i feel old enough already, and now i have to be over 21 to earn £5.35! bah, well i guess i'm happy with having a job at all, though i wish i kept that B&Q job...that was a nice pay...

ok MR Neale, ah, finally, a use for that compost heap in my closet, i'll send it 1st class right away! now i can call you dave.

The big UK meet sounds good, i like that, i think it'll have to be in the middle of everyone so we can all reach it, or if everyone can save enough, have it in a real nice place, like cornwall or something, though i'd be happy with anything. hope this goes further.

yAdam

good idea rich, i'd be happy with just a normal meet as well :) I'm pretty sure a similar idea was suggested by molly/koshime/dirty c many many months ago, maybe even last year, but that didn't really get going. Though we do have hurri and chupacabra here now, so they could get more european kids over.

As for the workshops, I think i'll go to one. I'll wait for the dates for seattle, but i think china is more appealing to me right now. Dunno though, could do with getting out of the country this year...

I was really into the idea of shanghai but since they changed it to a 3d based affair ive lost all desire to go to that workshop. Would still be cool to see shanghai but i think that ill be attending the seattle workshop so long as theres no major hiccups.

Yeah that was a bit of a turn off for me too. I barley touch 3d and I'd much rather drool over a traditional painting than a bit of Maya imo. If only it was shanghai in December and Seattle in February then I might have been able to sort somat out.

Btw, does anyone know how to get names for your mp3's? When ever I rip a cd onto the pc it doesnt seem to label it which is odd.

I have that ripping problem, but since i have way to much free time i just name them all manually.....sigh, i need to draw more and watch porn less...

in other news, is starting a comic, however small and noobish, good practice? after reading several web comics, like CTRL ALT DEL, Machall and VG cats, its really inspiring to watch the progress of the style, so, good idea? no?

Depends....on the fees and flight costs....lets hope for a total US crash in their economies....

hahaha - yeah man! that would be such a bitch for the Americanos...

Usual cost for a workshop IN America, is around $600.00, but, add the flight, the hostel/hotel, cab fees, food and wot not, it all adds up....

Welcome Shanthi & Zerosum!
MadCat - I really do hope, that now, you stick to that name eh? :)

Hey Mr Man! :) - Another UK meet-like-workshop has been in the pipelines for while, it costs to organise and hire a venue where we all can fit and work. (cant have a workshop without life drawing) Unfortunately The Art Acdemy where we had it last, has moved to smaller premises. I know of a few studios in London where you can hire a on a daily bases - I'd love to organise a UK workshop big or small, but its all dependant on money and location(inside or outside London I dont mind)...
For a BIG-ish workshop, I've been chatting to my twin who works for an event production company, and I've been asking her what it would take to set up an event like this - sponsors, venue, equipment etc etc. Her company have a good few clients (Red Bull being one) and I thought, well, looong shot, we could take advantage of that somehow....
For a small workshop, it would be on the same level as the Belgium one our euro cousins organise; over the weekend, with plenty of life drawing :) - Again, venue & model hire main priority...

Does anyone else know of studios for daily hire? And models too? Would be good to have shit like this on record, y'know, for zee future...

I'm glad you have a better idea for things than me Treacle! I never really thought for a moment that we'd all need to fit under one roof. Dunno why it didn't come to mind. Theres lots of things I have over looked.
How much are we talking per day to rent a studio out approximately?
All we need really is one room and people, then the magic just happens. Models would be great though! I might see If I can get hold of the model my college used, hes a pretty cool bloke and an interesting subject to draw.

The key to these things is to stay simple. Just a pity even simple isn't straight forward :(

Anyone have a fucking big house? that would save us a lot of hassle.

I could ask the Education college I used to go to if they could give me the numbers of some models if need be, I know a few were based in London. Going to be moving into halls in a week so might not be able to use the net til october but you have my number I know Molly =P

I've been watching these comic book programmes, so cool, so talented. Did you see Johnathan Ross' in search of Steve Ditko? Amazing, he got to finally meet him, but the cameras werent allowed in his office, but he gave Johnathan some comics...He interviewed Alan Moore, Stan Lee and whole host of comic book artists and writers....~Also Amando Ianucci's been narrating another show called 'Cool Britannia' and he's been going through the ages of the comic book; I cant wait till they get to our earror(sp?)
Free view does have some cool TV, its just a matter of finding it amongst the bull shite...

Speaking of bull shite - what the fuck is up with remaking 'Halloween?' what, they gonna go thru the whole collection and remake it? What on earth for? I mean, when they remake movies, it loses the classic thrill/scare element it had in the first place!?! I mean, what, in 10yrs, they're gona remake Alien? Heaven forbid! The remake of the Omen was shit shit shit! Nothing had changed, it was just ...no, absolutely nothing had change. I was surprised the nanny wasnt a busty blond cheerleader...I mean, the audiences nowadays are looking for gore, and nothing else - so cant movie production companies be original and write their own shit instead of remaking the classics? Aarrgh.......

Come, tell me folks - what remakes can you list that have disappointed you? This subject really gets my goat.....>:{

Didn't see that Molly, and I didn't realise there was a whole comic 'season' or something going on on bbc4 now! Only caught the last half of the moebius doc last night, but what I saw was pretty cool.

Hehehe, can't believe its being remade by rob zombie as well, he has made some good music, but I think he's a bit of a shit director. I can only imagine it will be ultra gorey an over the top rubbish. Although it does have that linderman guy from heroes in it, so I guess it could have some decent acting in it.

Can't think of too many off the top of my head, but I remember the remake of ring was lame and texas chainsaw massacre remake was crap too :)

haha-way to vent, tis very true...I havn't seen all of it, but I saw a bit of the remake of Harvey and instead of Jimmy Stewart they used Leslie Neilsen (who I love in Naked Gun) but jesus, that was a wank remake....and I know it wasnt a remake but the re-release of Star Wars with the new effects pissed me off....if you watch them now those effects have dated sooooooooooooo much faster than the origional ones.

Oh and that Moebius thing was crazy-the dudes a machine-not the style of comic I generally like but I couldn't help being so bowled-over by his talent.

um... the 3:10 to yuma. Apparently a remake. Amazing actors... but probably one of the most badly put-together films I have ever seen. Like watching aliens put together in such a way that the aliens looked kind friendly half the time, drunk the rest and generally made ya wonder what the hell was going on.

There are few films that get me emotionally ranting about stuff... but the 3:10 is one of them! Never have I seen such a pointless collection of randomly improbable unmotivated acts in random sequence and vague plot. Shocking. God damn hippies. (and no cool fighting from bale either. Or from Crowe. how...how did they get it so wrong?!?)

Bones Weep Tedium
September 25th, 2007, 04:28 AM
That's the fundamental problem with remakes; they only ever remake good films that people love, so the remakes are rubbish in comparison.

They should remake films that had all the right ingredients but for some reason never came together. Halloween for example was really popular when it came out and has remained very popular as the yeas have gone by. It is now considered a classic and has been very influential. It's safe to say you don't need to improve anything with that one.

To me, a film screaming out to be remade is HIGHLANDER. It has an amazing story with really good characters, but it was a flop when it came out and it has remained a cult (read 'unpopular') film ever since.

They need to remake it, make it good, so it'll be more popular.

lefran/Dave- glad i'm not the only one who has to put up with these kinda people, although i'd rather noone did, but on a bright note one of the chicks who did complain asked me to help her out with some perspective stuff, my 1st teaching experience! haha.

Bad film remakes: The ring and grudge movies! i'm sorry but you can't do creepy like the japanese.. some of the very few films that have the real creep factor and doesn't need to use loud noises and jumpy outty things to scare you, after seeing the ring i would not go near a tv on my own for weeks! the remakes were just bad..... very rushed imo long live japanese horror!

One question, is taking a sketchbook to a bar and asking people if you can draw them a good way to make friends/pick up chicks? cause honest to god i think i'm obsessed with this barmaid at the old post office :bashful: see, i really suck at talking to people, especially pretty girls, since my confidence is living with the worms haha how do i go about doing this!???

Aardvarkphil: Mr man is right, its a learning experience, not a battle of t3h l33t sk1llz! sorry... :bashful: i would think going will be one of the best things you could do to further your skills and ideas etc. your more likely to come back with alot more knowledge than if you didn't go and worked on your own 24/7, the masters there will bestow their wisdom apon you and you will grow considerably! so on so forth.

If the printer doesn't have USB slots on it, then it probably uses a parallel cable to connect to a computer. You can get a parallel to usb converter like this: http://www.nextag.co.uk/Keyspan-USB-Parallel-Printer-63815285/uk/prices-html?nxtg=158d20a240523-0D7875847EFC2FE4

frogSweat - Imagine FX is indeed supplied in WH Smith or you can order it from the future publishing site (I can't remember the link). I used to work at future publishing in bath where I met the Imagine FX team, they are really nice bunch! A very quiet bunch though..:)

Its usually put with the computer mags and they sell out pretty fast so its well worth going in to the shop early in the month if you want to just buy a copy.

congratulations adam!

what qualifications do you have?

Sorry it's just that thats the sort of job i want to end up with, atm i'm trying to apply for university, i know i want to do illustration i just don't know where is best?
i'm getting loads of input from my college teachers and familly and stuff but i doubt they'd really know what universitys to look for - apparently the teaching is completely different at different uni's?

urgh.. applying to uni is such a nightmare.. :dead:

Hey Edd, I got a degree in computer animation 2 years ago and decided I wanted to go into concept art about half way through the 3rd year, so i'm sure having a degree helped a bit, but it's not necessary. I think you just have to work hard and get a bit of luck I guess. There's a thread in the art schools forum about uk courses so if you wanted to go to uni that's a good place to start.....There's also lots of uk people on illustration courses at the moment.

Kim, I have a question about colors. I managed to get it working, but i've spent the last hour trying to find out how to save. It says fat wasnt initialised, so apparently I needed to patch colors with a DLDI file. That doesn't seem to work and there doesn't seem to be much about it on the colors forum. Just wondered what version of colors you are using (i'm using 1.05, 1.06 didn't work at all) and how you got it to save. cheers!

What hardware are you using with your DS, Adam?

I just plonked Colors ( v1.06 ) onto my card ( M3 Simply ) and it worked right away. It saves to a 'COLORS' folder which it created on first boot.

I found that the dldi thing didnt make a difference, but donloading the latest firmware upgrade for the chip did. I also have an M3, but my firmware was old... with the new one it worked first time!

Matt : Show us some sketches! :D The colours home page has a gallery that allows you to upload the .drw.... and you can see the image drawn again under the final pic... and if you get the java applett, you can get it to REDRAW your image at high res (2455 wide I think.). Not sure how useful, but might be worth tryin!

Here are a couple of mine :

I'm using the m3 as well... odd, well I got v1.05 working with saves now, didn't realise you had to actually download a patching progam to patch it.

v.1.06 still didn't work, but i'll try updating the firmware later, see what it does.

I downloaded the patch, but once I got the firmware upgrade, the patch didnt make any difference, it worked anyway. The firmware just allows the software to access the disk in a different way I think. I wasnt even able to start colours up when I first tried.

BTW, 1.06 is far better... way cooler features.

They're amazing, Kim! I like the first one :D

Just reminding people that I'll be in London on Friday 2nd November if you wanna meet up. I gotta pick a pace in London (got list, but from what I remember Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square and China Town are up there) and draw/research/take photos etc. from that place to get the general 'feel' of said area.

Kim - Cool! I'll give that upres a try. This really is a very cool thing indeed. I've used the new 'thanks' feature to show my gratitude for you introducing me to it! :teeth: I'll post some pics next time I've got my card attatched to the PC.

Some areas of my DS screen ( extreme left and bottom ) seem to have dicky pressure sensitivity. Anyone else come across that?

Yeah matt, I get that on the right, left and bottom. The stylus doesn't seem to register, but if i use a finger or thumb it works fine. The only way I work around it right now is to turn off the pressure control for opacity.

Same - I turned off pressure sensitivity on opacity to get around it as well

"DS-to-DS collaborative painting"
Damn thats cool... haha.

Iv made seperate gallery on my website now just for this program... I find painting so many small thumbnails that really stop ya niggling on detail and without any fancy tools has really helped my painting a lot. in a week. Did I mention I love this program?!?
