^____^;; Hey guys, sorry I disappeared! Been pulling various things together for work, taxes, trips and stuffs.
I'm SO stoked you're all game for a meet up! My schedule is wide open, so the 12th is fine! I'm staying in a hostel in North London but as far as I know it's easy to commute. I managed to get a room with two single beds for the price of one single bed somehow, so if we're out late and you miss your train, you can crash with me. WOO HOO!
I do want to take a day trip to Gloucester to see the cathedral up there and I wanna arrange an overnight trip to Wiltshire to see a couple folks and Stone Henge... but aside from that the only priorities I have are cathedrals, museums, beaches and Cadbury's eggs ^_~
I'll also take any suggestions of can't-miss things to see! :D I just wanna be goofy and be amazed at stuff I've never seen and done before ;)

Quicksilver - it's worse than that, i'm from Barry!!! you knows it!! :) and it's the same there, i was back a few weekends ago visiting my folks and , jeez, what a shite hole!! maybe i'm just an anglosized snob now but the place has gone to rack and ruin, tho actually, thinking about it it was always like that :), it's such a shame cos the actuall location is great, 4 beaches, country park, 6 miles from the capitol, it should be amazing (for 3rd world Wales) but its just plain grim - too many low ambition havin' mo-fo's and bent councillors, it's such a shame, but, well, you know you could say - 'christian, if you dont like it, do something about it' - but you only get one life, and i aint spunking mine on that lost cause :) lets draw some pictures !!!! :)
hey Steph Laberis if your near 'the henge' i'd suggest a short trip to Avebury too, to my mind its alot cooler than SH, it's the biggest stone circle in europe, theres actually a small village inside it!!! and its a great place to chill, the Red Dragon pub is in there too, and the food is not bad these days. the big secret about Avebury is that it's the cool place for the solstice!! much better atmosphere that SH, no assholes, just hundreds of lovely gentle hippies playing music, dancing, havin veggie BBQ and 'honing they're stone' ;) top fun!

Brave - uniform? hehe unfortunately not, but I'll say yes' just for you:)... your post in the FF section kicks arrrrse, about time you did it! - BTW Mortal Engines, is it a like, a big fat fantasy book? You mentioned that your reading it to your son - how old is he? I had a maaaad thought this morning, about creating a colouring-in-book for kids, full of line drawings of monsters, cool space ship, warriors and sci-fi females....dunno why...maybe I'm getting brooody?...haha...also, that other Stone Circle in Avebury sounds coool, would be great to go and hang with those hippies!

Waaarrrrhhhhggggg, I'm sorting out me portfoliooo atm. Anyone have any interview tips?? My tutors keep floating about everywhere and it's hard to catch them. Naomi :
- Smile
- Give a good handshake / greeting
- Be enthusiastic about what you like or don't like ; express your opinion
- Don't make stuff up, know what your talking about
- Its good if you can mention artists or illustrators you like that they might not have heard of, because they hear a lot that everyone likes Banksy and Damien Hirst or whatever mainstream stuff ALL DAY
Definately know:
- Why you want to be on that course and in that uni
- What you see yourself doing after the course ( progression into work )
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Msn me if you want some more tips, I have a leaflet from my school that was pretty damn good.

I went to Coventry yesterday to see a tutors work in a gallery there. Spent 4 hours in the car, fighting trraffic with my friend, smokin' some green to keep us lean. When we finally made it the gallery, we spent a nice an easy 20min looking at the work. I was promised a fantastic Lucien Freud, huge painted heads and exquisit work. We got a room with 13 paintings, of which only 2 were worth the journey.
My friend Paul and I were so disappointed. Sure, the work of the 'New British Realists' was superb, but not enough superb for the journey we indured to get there. Honestly, there are more bull-shitters in the art world than i thought, more pretentious arseholes you must take with a pinch of salt. I cant believe the hype surrounding the exhibit was so high, I mean, sure yeah, you value your own work and worth, but if I was exhibiting in a gallery the size of my flat in Coventry, I would NOT give false impression to my friends about its uniqueness. The only painting with soul, character, purpose, story and all those magnificent things, was a Robert Lenkiewicz. The Lucien Freud I was promised was the like. a 6X6 canvas. There was work in there that was just bloody awful. Like an A-Level art portrait. Just bloody awful. No life, just fucking 'static' I mean shit man, the merging of classical fine art techniques and poise, coupled with todays modernity, should marry well, and be harmonious. What we gopt was a bad modern version of a classical Michelangelo pose - with a mobile phone thrown in for good measure. Lack of feeling, interaction between figures in a painting, lack of emotion or flow, no energy, static, stiff figures; if ANY artist tells you illustration is crap an' all that DONT LISTEN TO THEM - they couldnt illustrate a piece of toast if they tried
Sorry for the rant, but I cant stop giggling about how much we bitched about the exhibit...it wasnt planed..we were gona be inspired, and in awe and stuff like that...but, but we ended up legging it out of Coventry faster than you can say poo...
It inspired me to do better than them, with my illustration & painting, to carry on in the direction I wanted to go in the first place, to seek out knowledge here and there and not be a mindless sheep to my peers....the art world is full of fickle, pretentious, attention seeking bastards! Y
Learn what you can form them old fuckers, then run away like Linford!

March 19th, 2007, 03:48 AM
True, true I did have some work in an exhabition in September last year only to find it stuck in a corner im a small hall. All they seem to care about is "hidden messags of pain and suffering"! The person painting it probaly went for the messy look as they cant actualy paint or draw! I seem to come to this point with quite a few art tutors as they always want me to be messy and loose with my drawings. They dont understand thats not what I want to do so I get down graded for it!
If they are right then the right to express your self with art makes it art then surly me expressing myself in the way that I draw is the same? Does a highly deffinined picture make it dull? Yea the stuff I have on here are designs for a game as I have to wait to go home to put some work I have done up thats more arty, but it a person can get away with saying a glass of water is an oak tree then well why doesnt it work the other way?
Plus whay is it so cold today!!! :nohope:
Well urm thats my rant. Modern Art has this effect on me! I must have an allergy!! :[
Oh one thing how do I put a link to my sketchbook in my sig?

hehe - yeah, Ivy Smith- I saw her exhibit last Thursday, went there for the open day. Shes a pro painter, and the Drawing year is like a 'top-up/support course for those in an artistic profession. I bumped inot a few people there I know, and they explained how its run/works etc etc.
Its a great place to go to once you finished your BA or MA and your in the field already. The have classes everyday and evening, focusing on gestures, clothed and unclothed life drawing, drawing at night, portraits etc.
The problem is, is that over 200 people apply, and only 25 get in, of which only 10 will get a bursary £3000.
I'm gona go for it, cos I need a change and a more focused, approach to my work - without the hippy bull shit! (nothing against hippies - its the only way I can explain it)
Anyhoo, I've ranted yet again...

Yeah that Princes drawing school looks pretty sweet. Nice space. I'd love to go for the few days a week if i werent so busy at present.
Step closer to finally setting up our own venue down in Salisbury. Looking at the final 3 premises for consideration this week and hope to have it all up and running by July at the latest. Around 1500 square feet of
business unit that we are going to use for classes, workshops, print studio, photographic studio and customisable studio hire options for artists. The main drawback with hiring spaces normally tends to be good controllable lighting so we are sparing no expense there.
Will hope to draw up a full and varied program for the year and we are literally 5 mins from the train station. Be great to see a few of you all now and then. Will be running the usual regular life, costumed and portrait sessions along with traditional and digital painting classes. Also a possibility that a friend of mine who teaches at the charles cecil studios will use us to run his classical atelier sight size summer school.
Were also looking for instructors to run workshops if any of you are interested. Can be in anything art, craft and design related really and we pay around £30-£40 per hour.

BTW if anyone wants to read a really really fantastic book on drawing the figure and drawing in general, I have found a real gem.... Rod Tiner : Figure Drawing without a model.
Not the most promising title, but I have never found so concise a collection of absolute gems... Seriously, this guy is good and his writing reads like a novel. I have never read a better book on drawing. Iv read a lot of books on drawing. Link :

yeah, I agree. Vilpuu is genius, but this goes into a wider range of drawing ideas and stuff about the figure. I especially like how it goes into the areas of bodyfat that distinguish male and female and the process of imagining yourself as a characer in order to give it more life. It really has a lot of things I have seen nowhere else as well as a lot of stuff Vilppu says. Both are invaluable.

Nice to see that I am not the only one going through ucas application (second time for me, was all paper and post last time I applied)
I've only applied to brighton though, aim high and fall far ;]
I have my interview on the 2nd, slightly concerned with my portfolio (lack of stuff to take) so busting a gut at the moment. Just curious to some of the choices people have made, I've been given the impression that the more highly regarded uni's fill up on the first choice applicants.
This is why I didn't bother applying anywhere else, if I don't manage to get in, then I was going to look to trying to get a spot through clearing. I was also looking at bournmouth AIB and Bristol, though I really have my heart set on brighton.
Am I right in that there is a meet up on the 12th? Might be able to pop up to london for that, can give me a grilling about the interview process, though these may differ from place to place. I have a copy of the portfolio requirements, was about to post these up in the schooling section.
Anyway think thats enough waffling, oh and hi! ;]

Hey Mr. Man about your up n coming college interview - do not fret about your lack of finished works, you're applying to college, not a job, which means they want to see potential, not the complete article. take it from me, as someone who tried for 3 years to get onto illustration courses throughout this here country and failed every time! :) only at the last one (Maidstone) did they tell me that my work was too 'finished' to take me onto the course - "go and get a job" they told me. - i was just gutted cos i missed out on 3 years of college parties and ............ all that that entails ;) anyway, that's what i did. So in your case, take your process peices, sketches, scrap books whatever, and talk about your thought processes, this is what they need to understand, ultimatly you wanna be a pro artist im guessing? well the technical side is just finish, it's the thought processes that make good or great work, show them your thinking and you should do ok :)
So, there's a meet happening on the 12th is there? can i come??? pls. with Pete emigrating to land-locked princedom of bolt-on i'll be in need of some artsy fartsy airs about me. :)

The V&A's nice an all; your most likely gonna end up in the Large Cast room where the statues are.....

Tekura: Cool, National Gallery sounds better in terms of activity - plenty to do around the area. Rightoooooo, that's the meeting place sorted. :)
I already noted to meet up around 10am-12pm, as some of us have to travel from a fair distance. If you think you're gonna be late, call one of us to let us know so we don't wander off without you! IM me if you want my number.

Tully: Dawh! Well, I will be around on the weekend as well (14th and 15th I think?) so we could work something out. Other than the meetup of the 12th, nothing is set in stone for me. The only downside is that I'll have no cell phone access so we;ll have to make plans a lil in advance via email. mmmm, WiFi...

Well lookee here at you lot! I started writing a reply a week or so ago, and I think you've clocked up a couple pages since then, which puts the thread right back at about the peak turnover we used to get - I wonder if I still have the most posts.. anyway, I did my back in yesterday, so couldn't get out of bed to go to the studio today.
Atmospheria - wow, you're there now? I remember meeting you in Amsterdam actually, though I didn't have a clue who anyone was back then. In terms of places to draw, it depends where you're living. The one a few of us used to go to is at Candid Arts on a Monday night in Islington - it's zone 1, so easy to get to if you're in the West End. What are you doing in London, btw? Working in Soho?
School is going well, though pretty well everyone feels crushed by the workload. I don't know when we'll get round to finally posting stuff, but it'll be weird to see what people think cause I bet we're not quite doing what people expect us to be doing anyhow. We've definitely moved on a lot, though weirdly it's not always worked out how you think. I've ended up doing better in tech stuff than anything else, which isn't what I expected at all.
Um, so anyway, miss you lot and would love to see you all again. If anyone wants to come play, you've got a place to crash in the Haight. BTW, Christian you sod, you should have told me you were in town! I coulda used a few drinks on Uncle Bill's tab haha. Oh, and happy birthday Spud, sure you had as much fun as your last birthday?? I remember me and Bravery not quite believing that you kept getting into pubs with the state you were in.

Don't ANY of you get all proper on me! I want stupidly awesome fun, not pinkie-up tea parties! ;) But yeah, if anyone wants to brainstorm, I'm game! Hamley's is definitely on my list now, and I've gotten multiple requests for "Mind the Gap" T-shirts... so if those exist, I need to figure out where to get them. Oh, and I want to take a day trip to Brighton too! And Gloucester! And Salisbury! And I want a pony!
So, I got my hostel address and I'm totally in the suburbs! O_o; My closest tube stop is Willesden Green on the Jubilee line... I hope that makes sense to someone out there. I will be arriving late on the 9th and leaving the 18th - I booked a day less than I thought I did. Oops! Prolly for the best though, everything seems so freaking expensive, the more I research it!
See you all in a few days! HOLY CRAP!

April 8th, 2007, 11:57 PM
Heh - the problem with posting is that there ain't that much to show yet. The stuff we've done is 90% academic so far, so it doesn't make for mind shattering stuff on the boards unfortunately. Having said that, we've definitely all leveled up, and I think we'll be posting before too long - but it'll be mostly traditional study stuff I think. Not sure what Carl's thinking. Though having said that, go to the main forums page (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/and you might find something there if you use your eyes thoroughly.
Let me know if you do make it later in the year. And for those of you who want to get in touch at some stage, my number is +1 415 412 4578.

The good news: I am alive and made it to my hostel safely, in a timely manner.
The bad news: MY HOSTEL IS IN FREAKIN CRICKLEWOOD. I had no idea it was going to be so far from the city and in such a sketchy neighborhood O__o I tried booking another room in the city but nearly everything is full, since it's the holiday and all. So uh... yeah... I have a daily journey ahead of me it seems.
With that said, until I get a mobile (where do you get one of those temporary mobile phones anyway?) I will be a little hard to reach. We are most definitely still on for Thursday and email or PM is the best way to reach me for now. I've got nothing on my plate until Thursday, so drop me a line if you want to hang out or meet up somewhere.

Hey Koshime - it's nice to be here! How's it going? I'll have to swing by Nandos in Soho sometime for a sketch meet-up (since I've been working entirely in 2D recently, and definitely need the practice!) Keep me posted as to when you and Sketchling are planning on meeting up and I'll see if I can make it, k?
Cricklewood is in North-West London, and is (as Steph mentioned) very closeby to some particularly sketchy (pardon the pun) neighborhoods. I used to live out that way, and was immensely glad when I left - no disrespect to anyone that lives out that way, but it just wasn't for me.

steph- umm if you wanted to get a cheap one, i work in a shop called woolworths, and i think they most likely have one there somewhere, they have mobile phones from £17 upwards pay as you go which i guess would be ideal for you
map (http://www.multimap.com/clients/browse.cgi?client=woolies&GridE=-0.12640&GridN=51.50860&lon=-0.12640&lat=51.50860&db=clientgaz&reclimit=5&place=London%2C%20Greater%20London&pc=&client=woolies&addr2=&quicksearch=london&addr3=&scale=100000&addr1=)
looks like theres a few, but i guess that would be too hard for you to find
or argos has some going from £30 store locater (http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ArgosStoreLocator?nextView=ArgosStoreLocatorMainSt oreList&failView=ArgosStoreLocatorMain&mmPostcode=&mmTownName=london&x=0&y=0)
theres quite a few of those around so you might be able to find one better?
high street stores seem to be cheaper than phone shops here, but they do have a few cheap phones
carphone warehouse (http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?article=MAIN.UK.INTERNET.STATIC.SL.MAIN ) seems to have a lot of stores
hopes that helps if not confused you maybe lol

steph, you know tfl.gov.uk? It's very useful for figuring out routes and times for travel.
I found the mobile thing a bit weird here too :P I just got my own the other day, but it's actually a lot easier than it was in Canada (and I would suspect the US too, but I don't know..). Pay as you go plans here are great. You just get the phone and simcard, pop the simcard in and away you go. If you put on £10, you keep it till you use it (none of this losing it after a month if you haven't used it crap).
So anybody want to get together on the weekend as well? Molly, we wouldn't have to go to galleries. I've been wanting to gather stuff for my office desk (it's sad and bare... needs action figures, dolls and miscellaneous chotchskies).. could make a trip to Hamley's and Forbidden Planet Superstore. Nice seeing you guys again today, Molly, Kim, Steph and Cai... sorry we had to head off earlier than we might have liked, but after a long week at work we were just ridiculously tired by all the walking around :(
Molly: That website I mentioned at lunchtime, probably seen it before but if not, http://www.johnwallin.net/site/main.html - check it out!
Sketchling: Those things I mentioned, for fun environment reference, Meteora Monasteries (http://flickr.com/search/?q=meteora+monasteries) - here's one of the nice big results:
http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=79620436&size=o
Hope we get a chance to meet up again some time soon, it seems silly living in the same general vicinity and not doing anything about it =)

Was great to see everyone again.. Wish I could have stayed longer and drink some more....:)
I'm up for a meet up North. Never been to Manchester, or any of the main cities, so it would be good to go to a nice one I guess. Yeah, I think there was an attempt to sort something out for Birmingham in March. Maybe something in the middle will suit everyone???....?,..

Guys, the meetup was freaking RAD. Thank you all so much for coming out and making it something special! I feel right at home here and want to visit again, maybe as soon as the end of August if my checking account can heal fast enough ;) I had a great time at the gallery and afterwards, making tattoos for the willing (and unwilling!) Naomi, you gots to post those pics, I don't have a way to upload my pics until I get back to the states!
Lefran: I have a new desktop background ;) I will post those pics of you cleaning up at the slots as soon as I can, Brighton was awesome and I'm so glad you were there!
Molly: You want a REAL one?? Oh man... well, you don't have to pay me or anything, just let me know when you need it and I'll deliver ^_^;;
Badger: I'm still planning on doing Gloucester tomorrow, not sure of the times yet though. Will check in tonight if I can, would be rad to see you again!
OK, gots to run, I think we're going to the zoo today. THANK YOU again and if any of you are out in the San Fran area, gimme a holler. There is a nice comfy futon, an indulgent hot tub and a quirky tour guide waiting there for you :D

Just a quick question for the londoners in here, Im doing a project on industrial landscapes and i would like to get some research photos and such and if possible do some plein air painting. Is there anywhere that I can go with some cool grimey industrial stuff?
Preferably somewhere with little chance of being mugged, if not no worries.

I'd recommend the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery in Silvertown (South East) - the facility is pretty heavy industrial (some areas definitely reminiscent of Lynch's Eraserhead), and there's some really great photo opportunities. As for the surrounding area, I wouldn't worry too much.
FYI - the Silverlink train no longer runs out that way, so you're better off taking the DLR to the City Airport and walking (it's only five minutes round the corner).

Chee mate - learn your lesson - nobody likes having their hometown slagged, and people have objected to it in this thread before (people I would have liked to meet actually, inc Mr Dixon) and in text form, people always take comments in the most negative light. I reckon you lot should go to Manchester actually, I had dreams of far North meets for ages. Be sad to miss them though.
I have to say the standout for me though was seeing Cai's new fashion hair! Love it son!

Having lived in Sheffield, manchester, derby, liverpool, hull, griimbsy, banrsley, leeds over 7 years; I can definately say I've explored the great South Yorkshire area and can thus break it down as thus
Manchester: Good nightlife, no trees , Northern equivalent of London (vying with liverpool) , relatively flat, good motorway and train acess, has small china town/square, has Large shopping Mall Trafford centre + Man U FC, large suburbs with dodgy to really dodgy areas, and a large outer ring road motorway system
Sheffield: built on 7 hills, it has vast swarths of nostaligc industrial works, be prepared to walk alot, has decent small city centre with tram system, decent motorway and train acess, easy acess to peak District, has large shopping Mall - Meadohall + UGC Cinemas, has a sci-fi, Fantasy, minatures shop called Sheffield Space Centre for all thigns anime/manga, blah blah
Leeds - Nice compact city centre with Selfridges and multiple shopping centres, , famous corn exchange centre, semi hilly up to the University area, has a lot of dodgy accomadation and area ridden with high crime, realtively easy acess by motorway and train. Good to visit for its Royal Armouries - loads of armour and naval adn warfare museum
Derby - Quiet, countryside scene, has one main hospital, easy aces on trains and motorway
Doncaster - small city, large suburbs, has a famous racecourse, large post industrial area
Hull + grimsby - By a large river estuary, pretty dead as the fish that arrives in grimsby, has a large amusement park that gets activated around now.
Yorkshire and Picteresque areas (near sheffield)
- Peak District & castleton area: great for painting, hill walking, loads of mines, old castles and ruins
- bakewell: nice country town famous for pudding and food
- chatsworth: fantastic area for a day visit. Chatsworth is known as the 'Palace of the Peak' and is quite possibly the UK's most stunning country house and a 'must see' for any visitor. The magnificent grounds alone - with their fountains, formal gardens and maze - are worth the 25 minute scenic drive from Sheffield

Brave hon, it was my pleasure - the look on your face when you realized I had said "poo" and not "boob" was priceless! Thanks so much for coming out to London, it was awesome to meet you :D
Naomi: AWESOME TATTOO DOCUMENTATION PROWESS!!! Do I have your permission to post some (if not all!) of these on my Flickr album? I'll give you the appropriate creds of course!
Cai: Can you upload them there pics you took with your cell phone? I know they're not super awesome quality, but it beats what I have... which is nothing. Stupid camera battery.
I miss you all tons, Boston is cold and boring. My Dad has informed me that he wants to visit London this year, so who knows, I might be back sooner than I thought ;) I think I'll send him to the Sherlock Holmes museum while we have a sketch group though, I don't think he'd understand what was going on while I drew more poo tattoos and we drew naked marble statues....

Hey Naomi, congrats on the ole driving test gubbins.
Hi Tomato, welcome to our little soirre. :)
Calling all northern artists. Soon there's gonna be another opening for a junior concept bod at my place in Manchester. I'm tired of interviewing jokers, so if you think your environments are up to it, either send me a private message here with a link, or send a zip file of samples to my email summerpudding1@hotmail.com.
cheers m'dears

Jon, straight into Concept? Jesus mate, that's awesome! And Spud, if only times had been like that a while back, eh? I better get a bit better at wrapping my head around environments one day too I guess. Congrats again.

Congrats to all the people who got onto they're various college courses - you can look forward to 3 years of getting pissed on borrowed money and having lots of sex, in between which you will also navigate the narrow and dangerous route between pleasing the tutors and maintaining your own vision - not a simple course so i hear, as most college teachers want to mould you into what they want you to be, not to help you become a better version of yourself. good luck one and all - and remember its all about staying power. 90% of the people you meet on the first day will be bank managers in 5 years - if theyre lucky - dont joint theyre ranks, keep going!!
there you go, another cynical rant courtesy of the bitter and twisted brain meats of TheBrave! :)
Pete, i'm stoked that your having such a cool time with the new job, and im pleased your getting the opportunity to manage and direct things more now, you so deserve it man, your vision and character will allow you to fly!!!!
DC - from what i saw on that Artlier (thing) post, your enviros are looking pretty sweet already old son. :)
have a loverly thursday.

TheBrave is spot on about what british art courses are, which is worrying.
So i've been seeing this guy about uni for ages who reminds me of olsen from CA and from the prague workshop, i went up to speak to him today and i was right, huzzah! one more for the brizzle crew, he's doing his masters in animation.

[void] - sorry i never replied! Am in denmark at the mo so a little out of the loop. Answer, yes, many tutorials... del.icio.us/sketchling contains much iv found over the years.
AND, have a look at my custom brushes tutorial from 2dartist.com :D
www.2dartistmag.com/artists/issue017_may07/Tutorial01.pdf
Ah... just had a look at that link void... actually Mullins uses old school alpha channels. But to make some sence out of it, lemme give ya some back story on whats going on. Any image thats RGB is just three channels. The amount of red, green and blue light in each pixel is determined by the brightness of the black and white image in that channel.
Alpha channels are exactly the same only they are not tied to a colour, but can be used to denote transparency.
Layer masks are alpha channels tied to a specific layer(watch the channels tab when a layer mask is selected...an alpha channel appears so long as it remains selected)
A selection is essentially an alpha channel stored in memory and not saved as an alpha channel proper. if you select an area, the marching ants show you what is selected. press 'q' to go into quick mask mode and you can paint that selection as pixels...kind of a quick-alpha channel. press q again to go bqack to normal mode and then in the channels pellette, press on the little new alpha from selection tab. The alpha it produces is exactly the same as what you saw in the quick mask mode... as its all different ways of displaying the same idea.
AND just to complicate things, a layer with say just a brushstroke and then lots of transparent area around it will have a kind of alpha built in. Ctrl click on the layer in layers (the image or word part of the layer I think...cant remember which) and you will have that layers transparency as a selection which can then become an alpha channel...
SO...now that iv got everyone snoozing away, ill get to the point. If you want to create a silouette of a soldier like that one in the mullins tutorial, you can
1) Paint it in any colour on a new transparent layer and then create a selection and save it as an alpha.
2) Paint it in quick mask mode, exit to make it into a selection then make it into an alpha.
3) make a new alpha and paint it white on black. prob the easiest option and I think mullins own tendency.
4)get selection tool and draw an outline. shift-selecting and alt-selecting to dd or remove from the selection. good luck! (dont forget to save this as an alpha before you lose it. Ctrl-d selects last selection in case you lose it.)
Ctrl-clicking on an alpha channel makes a selection you can use...ctrl-shift-i inverts a selection so you can paint on the BG or the FG at will.
Hope that didnt confuse the shit out of you!
K :D
P.S. have a look at the painters of skagen...jeez these guys were good!!!went to the museum today.

hmm very random question, but i was wondering- do any of you guys know the name of the japanese game show where they like, dress up as an object or portray a situation, like there was about 5 women that were a giant teddy, but turnded the other way and they were a cake, and there were a group of guys that portrayed a prison escape. hmm i cant remember what it is, anyone know?
and yes, like i said, very random question haha :D

I understand what you're saying as I've had the opportunity to see you shwo it once, but I'll be damned if its really hard to paint with, as the colours can really come out strange just painting in alpha channels

lefran... It hink you are talking about takeshi's castle? Crazy Japanese gameshow witth silly stuff like that.
Koshime: You are pretty much only painting silouettes as alpha's, so that you can select them at any time and work, paint, apply gradients etc... or select the background at any time all the whilst working on only one layer. speeds things up.

Ah well it was kinda a let down but it was mad when it happened. It was like a scene out of star trek when the bridge gets hit and the camra shakes!
It only lasted a few seconds, witch is good as we have far too many old buildings that are now flats. So it could have been a huge thing but thankfully it wasnt :D

:::::::::::::::::::IMPORTANT INFORMATION::::::::::::::
In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated
that if we drink 1 litre of water each day, at the end of the year we would
have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) bacteria found
in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.
However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine (or rum, whiskey or
other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of
boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.
Remember: Water = Poop, Wine = Health
Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water
and be full of shit.

Tis surely a thinly veiled ploy to get absolutely bladdered, (I'm sure the trial has not been double blinded and randomly controlled and has poor levels of evidence) and then when the bloomin liver packs up, they're cryin out for a liver transplant and end up on the intensive care units screemin for bloody murder for a bed countrywide, and then when they're next to close to dying and the liver is absolutely pate....
Alll I can say,
the ICUs in UK will write : not for resus or transplant. Not suitable for subsequent treatment or escalation (i.e let them get stuffed, they asked for it)
doh!

Sorry Molly. I have strong knee jerk reactions to insobriety related articles, and the last thing I would wish is for the advocacy to convert more folk to liver pate overdose, when a modicum or occasional approach to enjoying drink is perhaps the better message to enjoy the UK national culture and festivity.
Here's to your good health and others!

Hey Kim, where you moving too??? And your getting a car??? Jeeez, thats gona cost you mate:)
We should meet up - real soon, but NOT SoHo man - pleeease not SoHo...
How about Brick Lane? I've been working down there with a small production company called BigRedButton, that Trev recommended me too. we're right above the bar 93 Feet East, which comes alive every evening.
I love Brick Lane. The cafes and bars are so cool, wireless internet in a few of them, cool resturants, beigel shops etc etc... If I could live there, I would move tomorrow...does anyone want a room mate? move east, and I may join you! hahaha - no, seriously
If CA.org had a workshop in London, the Truman Brewery would be THE perfect place for it. Its got plenty of floors for demos and its surrounded by cool places to hang out (esp Cafe 1001). The reason they wont come here, is because its 'expensive' ...... (and SF wasnt?) anyhoo, if I had the dough, I'd organise it myself.... head East people!

- random off-the-topic - RANT
but I hear on the news that the parents of missing child Madeline, have gone now and visited the Pope. Forgive me for saying this, but WTF? How much coverage are these two people getting? In the first place, what the hell where they doing leaving their child ALONE in a villa, and secondly, how many OTHER parents (from the UK or indeed the World) are gonna get the same coverage as them? If they were black, their parenting skills would be questioned; white, as we see already, plenty of media coverage and government help. I sympathise - dont get me wrong, it must be awful for them to have their child kidnapped...but...they've gone to see the Pope? WTF is the Pope going to do? If the kidnapper is in anyway a typical Catholic, then hopefully guilt will set in and they would return the child, but, apart from the Pope visiting the place where she was taken, I dont see what impact its going to make on the safe return of Madeline.
I wonder how many other parents in the World are missing their children, and if they are been given the same attention as these two who left her alone in the first place. I apologise for my rant about this case, and possible lack of knowledge - and I do hope Madelines found safe - but jeeeeeez, the whole coverage of this case kinda makes me sick....
Also, if gangsta/hiphop rappers hate G-a-y people, then why say 'come suck my dick' as a lyric in their tune? It doesnt make sense. Eminem's done it a few times, and well - what the fuck is he trying to say? that hes a closet gay - what? Also, apparently, a British platoon found out one of their troop was homosexual, so they pinned him down and raped him..WTF? The British Army have truly scraped the barrel when recruiting for the front line... to think we're sending THEM out to Iraq to represent the British people....tsk tsk
One last rant....I duno if you lot have seen it, (and I dare not post this in the Lounge in response) But a ca.org mod has posted a thread about CA.org members NOT buying the Girls Calender, and ranting that we should all support the Girls etc etc.... Its not fair to force, or make members feel guilty for not buying the Calender. Its a great achievement, dont get me wrong, but IMO, I kinda understand people NOT running out to buy one. The Calender has no 'Rock Star' professionals in it, therefore fanboys are not going to bother buying it. Secondly, its 'alright'. Its not AMAZING, its alright. If my opinion is wrong then fair enough,(I have a piece in there too, and IMO, its OK, not amazing) If the Calender was of the best from Last Man Standing, then I figure THAT would make a better sell than the 'Girlie Calender'.
GGRRRRRRRR....
Everything, and everyone is annoying me today. I have a murderous toothache. The co-codamal the doctor gave me is not working.
DavidCousens
May 30th, 2007, 11:29 AM
Good rant Molly! It's rare that someone goes off on one and I agree with most of their points. :)
The Madeline thing is weird. My Dad noticed one piece of footage a few weeks back where the parents were walking out of a church laughing, then realised a camera was on them and suddenly put on very solemn faces. I agree about the coverage too, all the people in the world who have someone missing in their lives through no fault of their own and 2 morons who left 3 children ON THEIR OWN for over 2 hours to have a meal get this much support, it's just not fair. I hope the girl is okay, but this should be a lesson to parents everywhere that your life and priorities change when you have kids, you are no longer the most important thing in your life, your kids are. Trying to go for a meal for 2+ hours is not a luxury you have any more!
The male rape thing is bizarre, but very common. When I used to live in Swindon, there was a park that became well known as a gay meeting place so a group of anti-gay people would wait for one of the guys to appear and then gang-rape them! Happened almost nightly for around 2 weeks! In fact, one night during that time I stupidly walked home by myself from a club taking a road adjacent from the park and got chased by a car, fortunately I'm quite the good runner and made it back to the club where I got a lift home instead.
Agree with the calendar thing too. It's good, but not amazing. The guilt trip/subtle threat isn't exactly fair...
yAdam
May 30th, 2007, 02:15 PM
I agree with everything there. I don't think i've seen any negative press towards the parents about leaving her in the room.
Sounds bad Dave.. I live about 20 minutes from Swindon and have always heard dodgy stuff about it.
