Yeah, I think I'm up for a TDome. Just as long as we dont have the same judges as the LMS. :nohope:
I suggest merely writing UK entry, and our against entry, with no handles, cause as Last man standing shows, bias is all over the place.
Oh and shall i wonder over to the scandanavian thread and give them what for?

Sorry again Christian for not turning up. I was really looking forward to it.
I have to get a root canal on one of my teeth. Who knew a toothache would turn into this.
I might just have the tooth taken out (it's the back one on my lower right jaw so it won't be seen) root canal scares the shit out of me.

not posted here in aaaaaages but i thought i'd let people in the edinburgh area know about a sketch group/art class that is running in the cafe royal bar (upstairs in the function suite) on sundays.
i have nothing to do with the running of it but i was there today and £4 let me draw a very obliging burlesque model for 3 hours, a great time drawing was had by all. It's running for the next 2 sundays anyway so if you're in the area i suggest you go along so it's popular enough to keep it going.
it's called Dr Sketchy

Hey Badger! Good call on the thunderdome. I know we're supposed to continue anything thunderdome in the challenge arena, but i can say what i like about vikings here and they won't be able to see it because this is the UK thread and they won't come here will they? Huh? Huh?
For starters, i reckon all their horns have gone floppy. (No holds barred with my insults, Yeh!) When i'm feeling rally brave i might pop over to the challenge thread and say something equally confrontational there............. :$
I've been quiet on CA for ages and ages with general busy-ness, so it'll be fun to wrestle some swedes in a tdome!

Cheers Mr.Badger....
I've been thinking of updating my sketchbook for a while, but i seem to have been too busy with proper work (that's mostly covered up with NDA's) to do much personal stuff. I've got together a few sketches recently though, so i'll try and update later in the week. And there's quite a few IFX sketches and roughs that could be worth posting and i think it's ok once they've been published..?
And i've already done a very quick doodle for the thunderdome! But i can't show that until the 6th December! :^^:
Also...

had the interview today, they were talking about my "impressive CV", and things like when they were writing after i said something they said words to the effect of "dont worry we only write things if you say somehting impressive", i thought the interview went really well too, i said everything theyd want to hear and more really and they said theyd ring the people who had the job the same day, and send apology letters to those who dont during the week, and she asked for my mobile number- which i got my phone out to give her- and she was joking like " if youd known your number you could have the job there and then! hahaha" etc,

Don't worry, it can happen to everyone on the day, just put it down to nerves and believe you can do it next time. As for jobs, well, its a lot harder than it seems sometimes, even with experience and a good interview, just keep annoying people til they give you a job.

I haven't used the uploader before, and Photobucket's only allowing 800x600 pics (in case you want me to upload, then send you the link). Can anyone suggest a free file host that'll allow me to go over that size?

Really intresting programme on BBC1 now, facial deformities in children
like huge tumors and absesses on their face, and theyre showing the surgery
this one kid, they just showed his operation, they basically cut his face off, peeled back the skin, cut a piece of his skull out, then exposed the brain, and transfered some of the tissue into his cheek for some reason, was horrible! but intresting
i suggest you put it on if your intrested in that kind of thing! weird anatomy etc

The thing with Italy is that they never announced anything. It sucks if it doesn't happen, but I think the thing is that they put a lot of effort and time into the workshops, and at times it's meant that MB has had to take a back seat. They've had long periods of non profitability, and with their business model, that's not a great thing. And as for funding, well, ca.org has always required funding from MB. Even when jason was making zero money, he was paying for this site out of his own pocket and not accepting advertising. People have offered to buy him out a few times, and he's refused any offer, no matter how high.
Danny, I'll be in SF. I think I may be the only one this time, but honestly, don't worry about it. You make friends with whoever's in your room etc. It's just like the uk meets, only way bigger and lasts way longer. I don't think I can remember anyone complaining of having difficulty meeting friendly people there before.

Come on marco, let her vent bro. This is the quiet little place on all of CA where we can say whatever we want :) And should say whatever we want.
Its true, this is gutting if it really is the last workshop. But then shit happens. I know one thing though. It wont stop everyone meeting up and learning from each other. Look at the recent Brussels trip Kim and Chee went on. [was it brussels?] That looked great. Yeah, jason and the crew maybe the famous clique, but we have some serious pros in the UK alone!
And another thing. I'd prefer to buy Marko's dvd and rewind, study, and learn, than watch him do it once and forget half of it. Im not gonna pay all that cash just to say "Hi Marko, I think you're top :D"
My problem with it all is that they wont say for definite whats happening. Yeah I can understand, but to drop that bombshell as a way to make Insomania sound beyond anything ever before, [even it is], is wrong I think. And I'd love to go to SanFran, but I know I havent got a prayer.
But I'd still love to go to Italy. My ticket's there and waiting.

All I can say is that I (temporarily) no longer have my computer, laptop, printer, scanner, wacom tablet, card reader, webcam....you get the idea. Dunno when I'll be getting them back either. Luckily, they didn't take my dad's laptop (the one I'm using now).
Anyhoo, the CA UK 3.0 thread has been updated with details of the next meet. Just yell out if you can/think you can make it. :) Fran and I will only be around 'til 5:30pm, unfortunately.
the link to the thread is in my sig.

hey guys. Sorry to hear the workshop issues are getting folk down.
Honestly, I think although the workshops are great, the lack of attending one do not sound the death knell of things.
There is definately an annual brussels 3 day workshop for the cost of a eurostar ticket and norm around 70 euros or less. 9often coupled with an extended camping trip)
Also, UK has an amazing plethora of pros here and some great rising stars.
With our regular-ish meets. There is nothing stopping us from becoming better and better through CA or non ca occasion (just meeting in a bar on a weekend is sufficient sometimes just to pass time, vent, etc *grin*)
One thing I'd certaintly recommend is the on-line workshops hosted at CGS. They run over 8 weeks, run by some of the best industry pros. That's one alternative to the (exorbitantly expensive CA workshops -seriosuly - they're overpriced but the ambience is great!)

Hey folks, Im very thankful im able to go to san fran. Though Im not gonna rub it in or anything because its just uncalled for and I know how much it means to everyone.
I havent been very productive latley and I really want to bring some kind of portfolio to the workshop. Does anyone have a rough idea on what sort of work to bring?
Btw if anyone is ever around birmingham ish area just drop us a bell and say hello :)

dude work your ass off, the way i see it there shall be hundreds of people at this workshop who are far better than me, its the most motivational way of getting myself to work in a long while, i know 2 weeks wont be enough time to make myself a pro, but i love trying.
Naomi, really sorry to hear that mate, hope everything will sort out ok, if whats happened is what i think has happened, then i know what its like and it sucks like hell.
Koshime, cheers bro, needed to hear that at the mo.

I have major doubts that this is going to be the last workshop, considering the response they got about italy and the amount of time that they had been talking about it, it dosnt make any sense not too. Plus from what i hear there has been talk of ending workshops way before this which hasnt ever happened obviously. I get the feeling that it might be just to generate more interest for this workshop.

Hey naomi, can i possibly stay over wednesday night please? as i wont have my car as i am about to explain
and have a bitch fit as which is characteristic of my posts
Weeeeell
i retook my driving test today and the bastard failed me for something that i know for a fact that i didnt do! I had 2 minors over all and your allowed 15- so does that sound like im a bad driver to you guys?! and those 2 were really petty! THe instructor reckons that at a stop junction ( where you have to come to a complete stop even if theres no traffic) that i pulled out and caused another car to slow down.
WHICH I DIDNT!
this was the only stop junction on the test route i did, and i can remember it well for that reason, and i know for a fact that i didnt pull out in front of anything, i have never ever done that before if anthing i hesitate, and i can remember that junction and i made sure there werent any cars there, if there was a car it was down the road and i wouldnt have pulled out in front of it, i 100% had time to go at any rate, and if i had pulled out, i would have been the first one to say oh crap, i know ive failed now, i would accept it, like my first test, i hit the curb, i knew i failed, and i accept that because it was my fault, but im just so angry with this guy because i didnt do it!
my instructor was annoyed to coz he knows i wouldnt do that! and he said hes gonna sit in the back of the car for my next test to witness it and make sure they dont do that again to me!
its annoying because its going to cost me £80 to retake it, and i have to wait another 10 days until i can take it
What is really unfair, is the fact that you can have 15 minors in your test and pass, and yet i had 2 and i fail, how is that fair at all? A girl in my english class had the same thing happen to her where her examiner failed her for the exact same thing when she didnt do it
Very very annoyed
So naomi, thats why i cant get to college to catch the bus from there as buses dont run that early
so would that be ok?
yAdam
November 30th, 2006, 01:56 PM
Fran, that well harsh. Getting only 2 minors is great and you should definately not be able to fail with getting only those 2. You can fail if you get 1 major I think, so maybe you got one for the examiner thinking you made the car slow down?? There's no way you can change the result now, but surely if you get 2 minors, you pass, without question. Your examiner was a bastard!
lefran
November 30th, 2006, 01:59 PM
yeah it classes as a minor- but i didnt even do it, there was no car to make slow down - im not in denial or anything because if the car was there i would be the first to say i did it- im my own worst critic, and i know i dont deserve to have failed
but thanks anyway! and yes HE WAS A BASTARD! :)
aph
November 30th, 2006, 02:03 PM
Ah that sucks ass. My instructor told me of a girl that failed for going on at a give way when the give way marks are actually non existant and there are no signs.. and another for waiting too long for someone to cross the pedestrain crossing. They are so harsh sometimes. You can do it, just a matter of time.

And of course, you're welcome to stay over whenever you like :) Things have been a bit hectic and stressy over here too...a bit more relaxed now though (ish).
Danny: If it doesn't involve the police being dickheads, then no, it's not what you think.
Think I'll have to back out of the TD too, which sucks 'cause I had a good idea for it. Really, I've nothing here to transfer it to - no scanner or card reader (damn xD-M memory cards...) and things have been so fucking fustrating lately I've hardly done anything for college.

A world cup does sound like a good idea. How'd it be sorted though? Country of Origin? That'd be the most fair for a start. Though of course the kiwis wouldn't make it past the group stage :S But it'd definitely be cool to see Marco with the Germans, HPX with the French, and alla you lot. The kiwis would get Rusty and schlo-mo I guess, so that's not so bad :) It'd come down to the yanks and the French, I reckon.
Pete, yeah, you've missed the festivities, mate. There's been a hell of a lot of them though. Still having farewell dinners and lunches and shit till the second I leave. I honestly have no shot at really getting my packing done in time, but fuck it, I'll just fill some black sacks up with shit and ditch it I guess. Adam, Cai, if either of you want any of those toys, PLEASE COME AND GET THEM. There's bugger all chance I'm taking them with me.
I will probably have a few drinks round my place on Thursday night, in an attempt to be tired on the flight (come on max strength night time flu drugs hehehe) so I can sleep before I get there and have to be up for 3 days for Insomania. I have the most amazng luck in the world
i had my driving test today right,
my instructor couldnt take me down coz his wife was having an operation this morning so he leant me his car and nan sat by the side of me as i drove down so my instructor wasnt there to do anything about this now my examiner turned up then right, this woman Jane and she told me to just go sit in the car
and she was like scrutinising my instructors car front and back, there was nothing on like no lights or anything anway so i dont know what she was looking at, and she was writing all these notes then she got in the car and asked me what do you need to make sure about tyres which is so vague and is an incorrect question , you either ask about pressure, or checking the tread etc but i answered all 3 things anway
then she goes to me, the baby seat in the back has to be clipped in with the seat belt incase it hits one of us
it was bloody clipped in about 3 other places, so i thought fine and i clipped it in. then she said ok then can you please leave the test centre and turn left, i turned left and seriously like 2 feet later she told me to pull into the left .i pulled in, and then she didnt say anything and just sat there with her hand pointing diagonally left
i was like, ok do you want me to pull forward a bit more she said yes please. so i pulled forward, then she was like can you pull in tighter please and more forward
so i did
then she goes
right im not going to continue with this test, theres a very strong smell of exhaust fumes, and i have asthma so im not going to continue
i was like what the hell, are you serious ( i didnt say that though)
so i had to walk back to the test centre with her she left my car there then she started to give nan all this shit about she knew exactly what has happened the 'gasket has a leak and its seeping through the system into the main cabin area'
which is absolute shit
then she walked off to the office i was just standing there devastated like. then the other instructors came out to see what had happened, and they were like this has never happened before and the one went to get the car for me
so he left reversed the car, revved it like hell to check if there was anything wrong and he said he couldnt smell absolutely anything. me and nan were in it all morning and couldnt smell anything .we then even checked under the bonnet and the back, and there was no smell but there was nothing i could do, you cant even get a second opinion by another examiner because after 5 minutes your test becomes void
so i had to drive back home then i left a message for my instructor then, as his phone was off as he was in the hospital
on top of everything for him like this is so unneccesary
as soon as he found out he was absolutely livid, sooo mad, he took his car straight away to a garage had loads of tests on it ( its a new car for christs sake ) out of his own money
and
theres shit all wrong with the car
sooo straight away he went to the test centre to see fran james the chief examiner there, to complain and kick up a stink
hes making sure its getting sorted, its even got to the chief examiner of south east wales
theres letters of complaints going here there and everywhere, its being taken very seriously
its possible she could lose her job- this woman has done it to my instructor about 2 years ago with his last car which was a clio, and there was nothing wrong with that car
ill get a new test booked for me free hopefully some time next week but i hope they fucking fire that wench
and thats my story for the day
edit: oh and also my sister and a bus full of students were abducted today by the driver :x there was a problem on the bus yesterday with some boys messing around, but today when the bus was about half way from usk to newport, he swung the bus round and started going back the other direction towards the college, he wouldnt tell anyone where he was going, and wouldnt stop to let anyone off, he was sppeding like hell going 60 in a 30/40 zone, and he zoomed straight past the college, everyone was really scared coz they didnt know what the hell he was going to do, and he wouldnt let anyone off, and he went to cwmbran and just left them on the bus, walked off and said i dont care what the hell you do im going home, the police are involved now!!

bloody hell fran - you must be due a landslide of good luck surely !
good work with the thunderdome's everyone - cheers for posting everything up badger.
and congratulations christian - bummer i only got to chat to you once ! haha... no doubt our paths will cross again online tho.
gah - i might as well contribute to the crap luck stories as well, i got up the other day to find that some idiot had tried to steal my car in the night (it's a crappy old renault 5 for god's sake ! - how desperate are these people !?) and had used a crowbar to get in, which meant the door was bent out at a 45 degree angle...hmph.
didn't look THAT bad tho til i got in the car and found that they'd also used a crowbar to break the steering lock...which kinda backfired on them and ended up bending the steering column, so now the car's been written off.
crap timing, was two days before my birthday dammit ! and i've just had to fork out for a new car right before christmas *snif*...which means tiny tim won't be getting any presents....*snif*
heheh...
i'm still in shock that anyone would actually try and steal something that old - and when i tried to report it, it took me a WEEK to actually get to speak to the police and they had a go at me for not reporting it earlier ! doooh !
ok ok...rant over...
lefran
December 13th, 2006, 03:45 PM
ah man that sucks
people tend to go for older cars as they dont tend to have automated alarm systems, and certain models are easier to break into that others such as corsas for example, with the certain pressure and weigh applied in the right place, you can bend the door right back and get in. Also older cars are easier to dump when theyre done with them, you steal a new car your more likely to get noticed, and your not exactly gonna want to dump it either- ergo more chance in getting caught
that sucks though!

Woke up this morning, feeling drunk, head awl-a-dizzy an' wot not...
Gonna miss you sweetheart, I really am. I remember the first time talking to you in Amsterdam, the very first meet in London with Kim; you've been a rock to this 'ere sketchgroup; an inspiration, our daddy. Do us proud over there wit all them wanks- I mean YANKS; paint your heart out; learn all you can; look after yourself in crack land; and have fun only as the DC knows how!
All the best m'love, you will be sorely missed from these shores!
S'pud - great to see you, got 'Love Spreads' in my head, played it when I got home, (I think I woke some neighbours) but who cares? hehe
theBrave 'how you doin'? hehe- glad you liked the head massage, good to see you again;)

You lot, we should meet up more often..I know I'm one to talk, I've been a hermit for the last...ooh...100 years, but I'm sure to make up for that!

Molly - didn't realise trev was meant to take the toy. It's still there, wrapped in plastic waiting for someone to pick it up.
This workshop is totally unlike any of the earlier ones. Loads of crazy performance art, Kevin Llewellyn's back, the setup is *amazing* and we seem to have a 75% brand new audience once again. Foster's back, and still really great and approachable. The Lemens are here, and the instructor ratio seems like it's massive. I unfortunately had to bail last night cause I'd been awake for like 30 hours off the back of 3 hours pissed sleep. Manley felt good enough to give me shit on the way out the bastard :)
I met most of the others in the school last night. They all seem like wicked guys, and really enthusiastic. I'm definitely gonna learn a lot with these guys, I can just tell. Carl seems to have found a really great group of people. Seriously can't wait. Haven't seen the space yet, but hopefully I will today. It's not complete yet apparently, but James Kei was saying it kicks ass.
Talked to Marko, told him how jealous everyone was about his missus - he seems as happy as a pig in shit, honestly. Someone said he hasn't even drunk anything in like 3 months.
I've had a few 'three rules' conversations already haha - It's cool that some things don't change. I don't think i can be bothered starting the Eggs thing again though ;)
The last 24 hours in England was awesome. Thanks everyone that came along. I'm a bit of a student of leaving places, and the amount of great people and great times I've had in London blows them all away. I was talking to people last night about how I just gave my career away, and I guess it is just now starting to sink in.

Spoke to Jason last night about what's going on. Apparently we're gonna be building an entire world in multiple genres. Not 100% sure what the genre differences will be exactly, but we're gonna be turning out vehicles, creatures, characters, environments and everything else for each.
Hope everyone back there is cool. Sorry to keep popping in here and being all sentimental, but I already miss you lot. God I'm a sap haha. Anyway, hit me up if you see me on msn.

Badger - I have not posted here before (Hullo) but as a UK chap, I thought I would take the opportunity to start and offer up some printer information.
The printer I use for work is a canon i9100:
Pros: A3 paper size, high quality, multiple-individual cartridges and boarder-less printing
Cons: High price tag (£300-400), fairly ink intensive
Mostly used for printing out technical drawings and renders.
The i9100 has been replaced by the i9900 (and Pro 9000), which I am told is fairly similar, it might depend on how much you (or Santa) is looking to spend. All this said I mostly use a 100’quid off-the-shelf Epson for day-to-day draft work so possibly if you are looking for this to be your sole printer it might be better to look elsewhere.

Hey guys, its good to be back in the uk! Im abit jet lagged from san fran and my brain is pretty much melted, but man it was worth it!
There was alot of info to get in especially from ron lemen. As I say hes got verbal Diarrhea of useful information.
Nobodys too sure when florence will be, I had a small chat to layil and she says they are gonna get focused on it once san frans out the way. It sounds like its a tought thing to organise so I dont think it will be too soon just yet.
If you have never been to a workshop then you really must go to one. For me the experience was meeting artists in person and having a good chat to see how they think feel and what their personalities are like. I was suprised how down to earth the instructers were. You could just sit down with them chat and no one would be on a high pedastal. Everyone was treated with the same respect which was great. I was shit scared when I was about to talk to my first instructor but once you start moving around talking to other instructers it gives you such a huge leap in confidence.
The last day was especially a blast because by then you became pally with everyone and it was so fun just chilling, learning, drinking and drawing. Definatley a great great social experience.

Hey fran,
I dont think many people are visiting the boards latley since xmas, or the uk boards at least. So I think we have got a mission of Personally messaging people.
Btw in terms of location Im thinking somewhere at the Bullring. I personally like to meet at the bull statue as it stands out and is pretty simple to find. We could perhaps find a cafe/pub near by once we have all met up.
Hope everyone can make this one :\ .

Yeah i agree with the later on idea, coz i cant really afford it atm, and i have a load of work to do as well, was just throwing out the idea, but it looks like i probably wont be able to get the day off anyway. anyone suggest a better time? the problem is is that during the week those of us in school and uni wouldnt be able to come unless we skipped a day (no biggie but still) and those of you who work would have to try and arrange a day off or pull a sickie. Also on weekends, its really hard for me to get a day off, dont know about other people, i guess if we plan it well enough in advance we should all be able to make it if we can book things off in advance. its just the trouble is were never that organised lol

So someone is organising a new UK Meet without telling me????? I am a birmingham boy so i know it pretty well (Better then Mr Man does anyway) so if you need some info on art galleries or good pubs, just let me know!!!
If this new meet does go underway, there is a free art musuem near the town hall in the middle of Birmingham, thats about a 10 min walk (maybe not even that) from the Bull Statue outside the Bullring. There are also several great pubs to relax and doodle in including Scruffies, The Gallows and the Flapper (But thats a hard one to find). There is also Costers (No not the Coffee Shop).
Anyway i'm interested in this meet, so add another one to your list :)

Anyway you lot, make sure you do meet up, or I'll send you all nasty messages (hehe they don't know what 'wanker' means here)

Is there? or is there not a meeting in London this week/month? :)
the last one was such fun, (apart from missing the train home) bidding adieu to that foolish, yet lovable kiwi (kidding - he's very clever and will be ruling at his 'sckool' in no time!!!)
it's always fun to get in amongst such cool people as you lot (well the two or three times ive made it have been anyway)
Molly, i'll need another head massage tho - ill bring the benjamins - well..... the elisabeths, you know what i mean. actually i PMed U a while back RE; our conversation that night and you utterly failed to reply, im guessing that unless you secretly dispise me (which lets face it, is unlikely :))............ actually now i check in my account i didnt send it - what happened to that is anyones guess.
well in fact it might be of slight interest to the wider audience (but maybe not)
the gist of it was this:- are we sitting comfortably? then ill begin.
OUr conversation at the last meet revolved around the subject of 'influence' specifically being personnaly influenced by other artists work, and how a number of people had recently advised you to avoid looking at the work of others as it may lead you off your 'true' path - or away from your true personnal style.
This is quite interesting I reckon, so maybe the rest of you might like to get in on the debate.
personnally i think its an incorrect assumption that avoiding other peoples work purifys your own style. i think it can only stunt it.
It actually amounts to an argument in support of ignorance.
in a nut-shell, if artists didnt look at each others work there would be little visual progress. we would effectivly all still be painting on the cave walls.
It’s like this – it is a mistake to think of yourself as a completely separate individual being. Humans are pack animals and our brains are configured to work as part of a community – in fact your brain is just part of the collective human mind – lets face it 99% of your (or my) thoughts are not genuinely our own, probably more than that really. Most thoughts and ideas are either direct copies of things we’ve heard before, or hybrid forms cobbled together from various sources that have arrived with us from other minds. Allowing for 1% originality is actually quite generous
Some find all this quite disturbing, and like to think it doesn’t apply to them, but looking at it in a positive light it effectively means that we have access to the thoughts and ideas of millions through the media, litrature, education, music and art to name but a few. To ignore all this wealth of knowledge effectively in the name of ‘purity’ would be like having access to a huge library and locking the door and never venturing in to learn.
i think there are great benefits to be gained through viewing the work of other, and even from - yes its true - copying the work of other artists!!!!! this is not blasphemy, it's the case - Rubens (you know the famous old french bloke) gathered an enormous collection of other artists work throughout his career, he was particularly fond of drawings and preliminary sketches as these contain the bare unadorned sole of the artist and the image, he spend hours copying from the works in his collection, he even 'borrowed' poses for his own work - in fact he even when as far as to hire other artists to paint his pictures for him once he'd worked out the compositions and then at the end just added a few high lights and his signiture. this was Rubens and he was and is considered a master.
Style is not something that can be aimed for, it evolves as life evolves. Survival of the fittest. Effective techniques are retained, poor ones are dropped, some forms work others don’t, certain palettes work, certain compositions work, steadily the individual style develops through practice, consideration and personal taste predjudice.
Ultimately we might think of ‘art’ as a huge wall built by countless artists throughout history. The best you can hope for is to add one or two bricks of your own. You’d be mad to try to start your own wall in isolation, to everyone else it will merely appear quaintly naïve.
Ok. That’ll do for now, you get the idea, and I have a deadline for tomorrow and I gotta go paint – hmmmmm maybe I’ll just copy some Rubens ;P
Haha. Later people, and whens that meet??????

Ben, if we can all get together 9th or 10th, that would be perfect for me. I have work to do till 8th, so I won't have much time till after then.

OH GOD BEN IS IN TOWN!
He's staying at Frankie's house (which is just down the road from me), so I'll be surprised and confused if we don't get a bit of sketching done. My book's blank pages are staring at me accusingly.
Would be cool to meet up with you again sometime too, Cartoonfox ... unfortunately, work is in crunch at the moment so I dunno if I'll get much time apart from late evening :(

Christian, I hear ya man,
you're wrong of course, but that's neither here nor there. :) Here's my counter argument, and the thoughts of some fellow Functionality Fascists. I'd be interested to see what you make of the discussions we've got over there.

I agree that referring to art books and stuff can make you kinda follow a homoginized style... BUT, if you get inspired by someones work, go with it. Learn, copy and sponge... but DONT STAY THERE. Keep learning new things. I find the art books give me a kick in the butt and make me wanna get better!
Studying other people's work teaches you different solutions to visual problems and is, I think, a good resource. That said, unless you yourself try to solve these problems by painting from life, you will never fully UNDERSTAND what those artists were doing, you will only mimic. Reality is one hell of a teacher and super inspiring.

Oh, and if you want wierd inspiration, check out :david attenborough's private life of plants and life in the undergrowth. Nature is screwy. Especially the wasp life in the undergrowth episode... freaked me out!
