shush. everything will be fine.
The museum of wales looks like there's a few things on, which might be good: http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/home/
At any rate, I'm sure we'll be fine. In terms of where we hang out, power would obviously be a blessing for me and kim..

hurricanes are good... they remind me of home. where I used to live in cape town, the winds got to the point where the doors would hardly open on the car if you were facing the wind when you parked... often. as in more likley to be windy than not. Hated it. now I miss it. go figure.

I'm gonna be there tomorrow. Sean, Kim, I think I'll be getting the same train home as you guys.. Any after that apparently take 7 hours.
We still meeting opposite the station on the seats between the station and the bus station? I might miss the train that gets in at 10:55 due to sleep. So I guess i'll arrive at 11:47. I will try and get that train though, so I dont end up wandering about cardiff. If I am late will I have to walk/bus to somewhere? Any plans on where to go first?

just so naomi doesnt take the artistic credit here i drew the sheep dragon leek and the particularly accurate self portraits. naomi can take credit for the beautiful architecture designs, cubist id say
anyway naomi spent hours on that, i had already spent a few days on those designs, they were coincidently patriotic enough to be used

sorry naomi, i really wanted to make it for you.. because you've come down to london all these times and i guess i needed to repay that
sorry kim, had i been just an ounce wiser, we could both be in cardiff right now having a great time.
sorry christian, i tried to be reliable.. i'm not a lazy cunt who won't even bother coming, i did try
sorry to my mother.. i lost her credit card and now it's off with my head.. ehh!
sorry if i'm going OTT with the apologies.. maybe it didn't mean that much to some of you whether i turned up or not but it meant a lot to me and i let you guys and myself down.. not for the last time i'm willing to bet
once again, sorry. i'll take a leaf out of kim's book and say.. well, things could be worse, lets make the best of a bad situation.. my life's been going down the shitter recently, i've got a college induction interview tomorrow.. please let today be the end of my stupidity

Well, it took me five hours to reach Eri's station in the end - the tube was stuffed, there was a security alert at Reading which closed it to all services going through there, we had to change trains at Bath Spa, and it was a bus replacement service from Bristol to Yatton. I was happy enough through all of that however, as I'd thought of an idea for the LMS tdome and had enough postermans and spare bits of paper to use as palettes that I could sit there freaking out other passengers for quite a while. It only really got annoying on the bus right at the end when the driver decided everyone would prefer mood lighting to actual vision and I had to put my sketchook away. Dick.
Eri's place is really lovely and both Ali and her sister are absolutely charming. Not least because they didn't seem to mind us sitting there drinking, not cleaning up after ourselves, talking shit about art and drawing and expecting them to take care of themselves and find all our bollocks interesting. It did help that we were all chapter-and-verse word perfect with Spaced, the best television series of all time. Unfortunately, after drinking during the day (the All Blacks were playing the dirty Saffers) and traveling for five hours, I didn't last too long and we didn't end up doing the eight hours of ecstatic drawing we might have hoped for. At any rate, I did manage to scribble something in Eri's book which hopefully he'll paint on and turn into a living masterpiece.
Thanks lots to Eri and fambily - I would have said as much earlier, but my phone died and I actually couldn't find it this morning. Hope I didn't leave it on the train..
Cardiff was windy, to say the least, but despite the numbers being a bit thin on the ground, I think we all seriously appreciated the more intimate atmosphere this time round. I did a twenty minute 'how to cheat like me' demo in the coffee shop (which will never be repeated within the M25) and my usual page of perverted anatomy in our newly adulted Naomi's book. Naomi's sisters are predictably wonderful (lovely new ladies encountered count: 4) and while I did make Naomi have an 18th-birthday cocktail, she proved not to be susceptible to the asian alcohol gene and neither turned bright red nor danced on anything. Pity.
Much thanks to Adam, Fran and the Welsh Wongs for the lovely time. The train home was spent with me and (y)Adam getting progressively more drunk and me trying to convince him to unclench his arse cheeks and get sexy in his sketchbook. Hopefully I got somewhere with that ;)
We reckon the next meet should be in Oxford, by the way. Shouldn't be hard for the Bristolians, Welsh or Londoners, and maybe we can even convince some midland types to make the trip. There's plenty of museums and bars and students to eye up, so I'm sure it'll be easy enough to keep you all occupied.
Yay!

[depressed angry rant] i'm sad, i miss going to college, i was ment to go back for another two years, but i had to move away just because my dads a pussywhipped shmuck, i was gunna stay down, get another job ( i got fired from B&Q..for drawing and quoting songs..on my own time of course) and just crash round friends houses till me and a mate could get our own place. but now, he had to make a scene didn't he, use the old 'your gunna give me a heart attack' sigh, now i'm stuck in a small nowhere village, which is nice and peaceful, but i have no friends, no college to go too, because its no late to enroll at one up here, i miss my friends down at the other college, just making new ones, ones that i could relate too, though it was at the end of the year rather than the start, but i woulda seen them this year, and on top of that my friend sam has gone off the rails and tried to kill himself and is now.. doing god knows wat, i used to be the one to hold him up, and eat chinese with him on fridays, buy each others in turns. so yep, now i'm surfing the net trying to find people to hang out with and do art with in this god forsaken hell hole. anyone happen to know anyone or live near chester? i haven't been to a sketch meet for ages, and back then i was a shy little bitch who moaned and slept to much haha.
ok sorry about that. Oxford, thats near chester right? if i can make it, i'll go any distance! going mad here. and i might take someone home so i won't get lonely.. haha. wish i coulda made the cardiff great pics though. :dead:..shit, cardiff.. i coulda gone, i didn't reliese how close it is to me.. at least i think its close.. and how the hell do you spell reliese..

Actually i was wondering if anyone fancied a sketchtrade, my room in the new house is looking pretty damn boring and it would be cool to get some real art up on the walls instead of posters. If anyone fancies it please drop me a pm and i'll get back to you when i have net access.
Oxford sounds cool, I should be up for that.
Molly the painting is looking great, to my eye it looks a bit oversaturated (even the shadows feel warm) the only thing i could say is maybe play around with an adjustment layer to give yourself a fresh perspective on the image.

guys, thanx for the advice about getting hogarths stuff.. the exaggeration with proportions really really helps! my winning strategy for learning stuff in the past week has been
1. find one weak spot in your art eg. noses and concentrate on it
2. draw 50-100 noses from ref
3. read up on bridgman's info about noses
4. a few more noses from ref
5. read hogarth's stuff on noses
6. more noses from ref...
7.. by then i should be a pro w/ noses. its working so far :)!!
that was just for the younger artists, danny, fran, naomi etc..

Oxford meet?? Is there a week or month in particular where people are generally free? Kim said he's busy around or at the end of October, if I remember correctly, which is a shame 'cause some of us have half term then. Otherwise I'm sure a Sunday thang could be arranged?

not getting anywhere near enough time on here at the mo...
hopefully i can make it to the next meet if that's cool, weekends are good - i need to find somewhere to live first tho so we'll see !
wanted to ask you all how do you all tackle stuff when you're working in your sketchbook ? i keep tryin to draw and then endin up producing stuff i know i can already do...so it feels like i'm not progressing really - do you use ref for sketchbook stuff ? like if i want to draw someone crouching or something and i don't have the skills straight off to draw that i'll mebbe try a few times then end up rubbing it out and moving on to something else, whereas if i'm painting or working on something more finished i'll use ref or go look at something...so mebbe i should print a whole load of ref for when i'm sketching at tea breaks and stuff (yeah we get tea breaks where i work !)...?!
sorry - bit of a random ramble there...but i'm not sure the best way to approach it...and i'm being well precious about my sketchbook and it's holding me back but i'm powerless to stop myself !...so suggestions are appreciated.
and how annoying is it when you do a page that just drops and you're not quite sure how you pulled it off....then the next page is crap !
ahem...anyways - be interested to hear how you lot tackle things.
koshime
September 14th, 2006, 12:59 PM
Well - personally, my approach may not work for everyone but each free form/concept drawing is viewed as a project
A project, has its own history/story to tell
it would attempt to have age, essence, character, a compositional tale, and a purpose be it for a concept or illustration or a reference sketch/study
For improving skills: Sketchling is probably more qualified as he views studies of colour/form/ colour theory/ lighting more throughly and brilliantly.
but in essence, study from reference, how the reference woudl look in different lighting states, and forms.....and that will help with believability
lastly.
carry a sketchbook everywhere you go.
I carry an A5 everywhere.....even the shower . har har

Regarding the Oxford meet, it does kinda look like November now, huh? So how about that first weekend? Being the 4th or 5th? Is the Sunday still best for people? Cause shops and stuff aren't open a lot of the time on Sundays, so there might be more to do on the Sat..

koshime - thanks, maybe that's where I'm going wrong because a lot of the time I'll just start drawing and hope something develops - sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't and i end up getting frustrated. I do tend to produce better work if I've had an idea forming all day...good call using reference and changing the lighting too - i hadn't thought of that.
dirty_c - i've got some hogarth on order so i'll get on that, thanks - and yeah, i need to remember that it's all the mistakes that make you improve and stop trying to make everything look nice.

"DVD?" Alright heres an idea for our next meet - we get a couple of movies which we really enjoy and find inspiring, then doddle while we watch em! We can even pause the video so everyone can have a bash at drawing a really dramatic scene. I dont mind having my place as a venue but at most we will be able to cram in 5 or 6 people - anyone who has a massive home cinema they want to show off?.
On a similar topic is anyone up for weekend life drawing at the Art Academy? Molly says its not a problem as long as we get enough people to cover the cost of the life model.
So any takers? :)

I think its great. Good composition and contrast with the baby/blood against the rest, though the blue is probably slightly too flourescent, for me anyway. I rekon the amount of that blue takes my eyes away from the baby. (When I guess your intention was to draw the viewers attention to the baby - which it did, just not quite enough I thought) :)

Hey sorry for the thread hijack, but I have a question for you UKers. My little bro is living and going to school in Hull at the moment. He's wanting to get a guitar over there (hopefully decent and cheap). I was wondering if you had a UK version of Craiglist (Craigslist has a UK section, but it's pretty bare). Any online classifieds would be cool. Thanks.
And you all did enter some fucking awesome pieces in LMS. Dirty C....jeezus man....awesome, but holy....
Thanks again.

Hey everyone,
I’m not sure if this was mentioned in a previous thread but theirs a game career fair taking place in Piccadilly (presented by gamasutra).
The fair runs from the 3rd to the 4th of October, I heard about this yesterday from a friend, so sorry about the late notice and all.
Here’s the site http://gamecareerfair.com/
I met up with some guys from rebellion (2000 AD, Rogue Trooper) and Crytek (far cry, Crisis) and got some really helpful advice regarding portfolio’s and what they look for when recruiting/ hiring.
If you’ve got the time check it out, it’s free and a great opportunity to get your foot in the door and make some industry contacts.
All the best

uk participation's been dwindling since cardiff, i reckon a london would be good to kick it back up again
like naomi and i have already said, and fair enough to those people that couldnt actually make it with good reasons, why should it always be london?!!? its really not fair on us guys, sean im not having a go at you btw im just making a point, who have to travel so far, if i go to london by bus, it takes me 2 hours to get to newport, then half hour to cardiff, then 3 hours from there, like 5 and a half hours. which im sure youd agree is rediculous. But i still make the effort.and when it came to you guys making the effort, very few did!! yeah i think we should organise another london meet, after the oxford one, but guys please make the effort if another meet is arranged elsewhere!
edit: just in case you think im sounding harsh, im not trying to be, its just a gentle reminder, so i hope theres a good turnout for oxford, looking forward to it :)
maybe i sound pissed off coz it took me 3 hours to get home from college today :x when its a 20 minute drive. i get one bus an hour, so i had a half hour wait until that, then it was an hour and a half late, then the next bus i needed was half an hour late. not amused.
i left a note for my boss today asking for time off, fingers crossed

ok, you know i thought it made sense, the majority of us living in london, and it being the place with the most galleries n starbucks n nandos...
i didnt say the next one had to be london or even the one one after..
or does that come after oxford
turnouts seem to be lower when it comes to other places. as inconvenient as it is for you, and i respect the effort you make (i did make an effort to come to cardiff and i was left £40 short for it (and i dont need reminding how much it costs you for a trip here)) london does make the most sense and i was only asking when the next one might be
or, you know, i could be talking out of my arse. i will make it to oxford anyhow

October 5th, 2006, 05:06 AM
I'd rather not start planning a London one just yet.
Effectively, I'm trying to get people used to the idea that a)it's worth traveling for, and b)that all those people (Cai, Harry, Fran, Naomi, etc etc) who have traveled up to six or seven hours to meet up with us in the past add a great deal to the community and are appreciated.
England is not so small that traveling like an hour and a half to an awesome, historic town with loads to offer is too much to ask.
Not going off at you, dude, just really don't want to undercut the thing by entertaining only 'can't make it' style posts way in advance and planning something else instead.
This time round though, I think it'd be a good idea to find some specific things to do in Oxford before we go, rather than leave it to chance when we get there.

OK, theres the Ashmolean Museum, it has got a DaVinci exhibition going on (http://www.ashmolean.org/exhibitions/?timing=current&id=17&exhibitionYear=2006) and an Eastern art one (http://www.ashmolean.org/exhibitions/?timing=current&id=16&exhibitionYear=2006).
Theres a botanic garden (http://www.botanic-garden.ox.ac.uk/), but I dont know how far out of the centre that is.
Having lived near Oxford for 22 years I dont go very often, Apart from occasional shopping and for a night out, so I'm not really sure of many places similar to Nando's. There's pizza hut and a place called old orleans (http://www.dailyinfo.co.uk/food/menus/old-orleans-adult-menu-0805.htm)). But i'm sure Josh will know somewhere where we can sit down and draw for a while......

Hello all, botanical gardens is not far from the centre about... 5-10mins walk from cornmarket/high street.
Old orleans is a good call adam, nice sofa's i seem to end up drinking there a lot. Good thing is they do food, don't think the lighting is great though.
Goose might be another option. Turf tavern would allow us to sit about in big group, probably outside, but it's warm. I'd need to show you where it is though...
Pitrivers might be interesting too as long as it's not swarming with children, the top floor is entirely weapons, swords and crossbows etc. But LOADS.
Depends what you guys wana do, i'll see if i can make it back, i'm seriously short of money these days.

Hmmm yet to go through the system but loads of me mates have this year, its normally like 3 grand tuition fees I think? then living and drinking ;) fees on top of that, but u can get a nice juicy loan to cover it all (and spend the rest of your life paying back! yay!)
I need help with uni's again this year, Brighton, Bristol and a couple of London ones look good for illustration courses but I REALLY wanna move out of London, I am going to a ucas thingy in November so I’ll find out more then I guess, which reminds me all foundation courses are supposed to be going to it on the 14th? Naomi and fran u heard about/going to this? It’s like a fair of all the art, design and media courses in the country in one place? Is this why your taking your trip down London in November Naomi?

October 6th, 2006, 01:02 PM
fran, bristol Uni or UWE?
both badger and i are at uwe. you, of course, will have top up fees, but our tuition is £1027 a year, accomodation in halls for the first year is probs about a grand and a bit a term, food and stuff is the same as for anyone, drink might be slightly more. if you want to find out properly go to the uni website and order a prospectus or phone them up or something.
i know, i know, im so helpful.
edit: wtf? people going to oxford!? how did i miss this?? has it happened? if not when? where the hell is josh and why did he not tell me this when i went down to his hovel and he plied me with pasta-y goodness?!?
in terms of pubs and stuff. the turf josh? what are you thinking about? its waay too cold to be outside unless you get next to one of the heaters and inside is really tiny. although in the daytime it might be nice. never been there in the light. hmm maybe it could work. old orleans is nice but dark as josh says. the goose is ok too for light and they do food in the day. there's a pizza express at the golden cross that seats maaany many people but severe lack of sofa-age. there are two starbucks, a cafe nero with sofas and stuff in the basement which is fairly light but can get quite smokey, there're various different other coffee places around and about but they can be quite small. oxford is quite small though so there isnt a huge range of places like nandos
in terms of stuff to see the pitt rivers is a goldmine of old amazing collected stuff. botanical gardens is good for all you environ people who want to swot up on that sort of thing mebbe, the ashmoliean is good, er the oxford story has nothing to do with art or illustration but everything (if it hasnt changed in 6 years, and it probably hasnt) to do with cheesey voice overs and effects that makes any child's day a delight. all the colleges around are amaaazing for architectural studies, almost unrivalled and you can go around them for free. you could go punting? no? autumn freezing punting for anyone? no? ok.
what did josh say? i should probs go back and read that properly.

and im not really sure where or anything- probably the one you guys go to. as for the meet thing you mentioned? im not doing foundation this year so im not going/ dont know anything about it? i dont think i do anyway, unless that was what you mentioned about an open day naomi
as for money for drink- i dont drink, well rarely, as id rather not spend all my money, i dont really see the attraction ( yes i am oh so young and oh so naive, and yes give it a few years and all that) and i dont really eat that much- i cant cook to save my life which is generally why! so i dont think food would cost me much hehe, i thought bristol would be more expensive than that though, i was expecting like 3K a year
