Collaborations you say...

I'm quite keen on that idea.

How about we get a list of interested names and draw them out of a hat to see who goes with who? Nothing too long, maybe even time limited, like one or two hours each.

Yeah, good idea DC. Lets get the ball a rollin.:^^:

Oh and Koshime, tentative date for a 4 hour life session on the 23rd september. Model is a polish guy called Pavel Czuba, very articulate model and good character. Untutored session. £23 for the day which includes refreshments at break time. Going to be held in a really well equipped and spacious art room at a local girls grammer school.

A collab would be cool. I wouldn't mind joining in so long as the other person doesn't mind me bringing them down, lol.

Anyone have any themes/subjects in mind? Something typically British would be fitting, I think. :)

Dirty C
August 16th, 2006, 07:46 AM
Well, i've been wanting to do one with Kim for ages, I must say. If we pair people randomly, will as many people be interested?

Dirty C
August 16th, 2006, 07:57 AM
Haha yeah something British. I think the only British thing we truly have in common here is immigration :) Hands up if both your parents were born in England haha

If it is going to be a fast one (one evening or whatever) then maybe we should stick to something not too taxing, or even just make it themeless so people can just have fun?

Ok, well everyone that wants in send me a blank PM with 'I'm in' in the title. That way I don't have to read them all :)

Ok, I'm gonna go start a 'random collaborations' thread in the 3.0 lounge. I'll keep the list of participants in there and post the matches there when they're suitably randomised.

Here's the thread: RANDOM COLLABORATIONS THREAD ('http://community.conceptart.org/groups/?id=43&link=view_topic&topic_id=1071&group_id=43') - please don't use this to sign up, please PM me as requested. Dirty C
August 16th, 2006, 11:43 AM
Here's what I'm thinking for the format of the thing. Let me know if it doesn't suit.

Each party gets a series of one-hour turns. This ensures that one party won't swamp the other or go finishing the damn thing without thinking cause they held onto it too long.

We don't set a day for the whole thing, just the due date. Right now I'm thinking next Wednesday. That way the pairs can decide how much time they have, and they can stretch it over a number of days if they want. In this way, it needn't take over anybody's life.

At the end of each hour interval, we take a snapshot of what it looks like. Then, if time and will permit, people can post their process and some reasoning behind why they changed what the other was doing etc.

How's that sound?
DC

Hybridstar
August 16th, 2006, 11:56 AM
Sounds good, and i like that we have a due date. It's going to be up to everyone to be honest i guess about the hour slot. Are you suggesting that we keep bandying it back and forth until the time is up, or should we have a pre-allotted amount of turns.

[void]
August 16th, 2006, 12:34 PM
Yeah I liked the idea of saving work after the interval to show the work in progress, and i think having a topic would be cool but keep it pretty open.

How many turns each is it going to be, I think that 2, hour go's each is enough.

Oh and yes I am a true brit mongrel born and bred.

Sure! :D I think we have an hour each, so if you want, I could start it off for the first hour and you finish it off, or we do half an hour each, taking in turns. I think the latter would be a bit more involving :)

Btw, I'll be going to Cardiff later to finish off that church sketch ^_^

This one:
That's if it doesn't rain, anyway.

Dirty C
August 21st, 2006, 06:15 AM
Each team is responsible for coming up with how they want to do it. You might want to limit or extend the one hour slightly to balance the pairings, but they're basically set up in a certain way as I figured those pairings might learn from each other the best, and hopefully enjoy themselves too :)

Remember, as many turns as you think is necessary, but try not to let one partner overwhelm the other by going too far. And try not to have too much ego either, this is more about learning and having fun than producing something earth shattering.

If I were to make specific recommendations, I'd say maybe Asgardian could kick off a character design and Hybrid follow through with some serious painting theory, as Adam has strong design ideas, and by all accounts Hybrid should have the traditional styles to bring it off.

I think maybe Cai and Chee need to both be involved in the design stage, cause you're both so strong on sketching. Or maybe Cai could do a critter and Chee could work out an environment for him, and you two could share the painting duties after that's finished.

Naomi could use some solid grounding in values and composition from Kim, who could probably learn a thing or two about interesting use of clothing on a character. Maybe the idea there is to do some sketchbook stuff first.

I think that with Jon and I, that Jon could use a little sexing up in the colour department, and weirdness of design ideas, whereas I have no idea how to polish anything I've done, so would love to learn how the hell he does it. The challenge there is for him not to get too worried about sticking on one particular track, and me not to just keep trainwrecking his hard work by changing everything every two seconds :P

yAdam and MoP - Adam, you seem like an all rounder, who could maybe use a bit more polish. MoP is all about the polish. I haven't looked at your work so much, you guys, but a brief look just now has staggered me slightly. Great work, I'll try and take a harder look when I get home.

As far as deadlines, shall we make it next Wednesday? That way there's no hurry, and people can finish early if they want. But do me a favour and send me the link of whatever you've done and I'll post them in the collaboration thread on the day, ok?

BTW, all recommendations earlier are merely my thinking, you might have different ideas - but if you were having trouble thinking of how to start, hopefully this will help.

Guys, I've just had a thought. Recently, I've used a little more reference when painting. I think that in the latter stages of painting, it might be a good idea for people to do that. The reason is that the trad and polished painters will really have something to contribute there, which i'm sure a lot of the really design heavy guys will benefit from. This means the expertise will mostly be split in the painting process, with one taking the lead in the beginning, and the other diong the teaching later on.

Cai and Chee, I've no idea which one of you is which there hahaha - maybe Cai can dig in his back yard to find some reference :D

Is it better than saving as a RIFF then (Apart from being able to go into photoshop)? 'cause i've always used that.. The only reason why I thought it was unstable, is from something I read, on CGtalk maybe. Apparently people started getting corrupted files after painter randomly closed sometimes. They said it was because of saving a RIFF to a psd.. Something like that anway.

Adam, I think the great patr about this is that you can rely on your strengths, and sit back and watch what the other person does in order to learn. SO hopefully it won't be too hard.

Personally, I'd recommend you start by generating a bunch of black and whtie thumbnails in painter like you do in your sb, then pass the whole lot over to Hybrid. But that's just me bossing you round :)

Yeah, i'll be on msn tonight if you want to chat dude. Say around 8 ish? Think christians idea is pretty neat, gestures are a great starting point just to arrive at some decent sillouettes and outlines. Liked the freshness of those sketches in your book, good place to start. Then i can put my slant on em and work a few up. Gonna be fun.

just to cut in i found this image really amusing, on a rather depressing results day i went to collect my sketchbooks and came across my year 11 book, in it was a SP i did in year 11, 2 FECKING years ago!!

i did a recent SP beneath for comparison

In other praiseworthy news, I really loved the designs I saw in your gallery, Senor yAdam. Have you and MoP kicked off yet?

I'm ready to go for it though, I've PM'ed yAdam my MSN so we can discuss.

I had a quick read of the last couple of thread pages and can't seem to find a deadline or maximum number of back'n'forths? Is it just 2 hours max, split half and half between the participants?

Edit: Dirty_c: Polish? Me? Hahahah. You must have me confused with someone else. My 2d/traditional/digital sketches are all a mess of wobbly lines and scribbly colours!

I've got 350mb storage for £26 a year, just renewed it, so i'm good for another year, i don't know how i justified the money though, thats almost 2 weeks food.
I'll be up for a colab with any of you kids i know, shout at me over msn, the girl is away all week so i guess that means i can do more art and more drinking. But i should do more art. Though I just got given my summer project from UNI, WTF it's like 3 weeks till i go back, they couldn't have given this earlier? So yeah, i might have the time, gimme a shout.

Funny you should say that Badger, cause I kind of think of Adam as the London Badger. Though he doesn't have your flair for accessorising.

God, I just had a sneaky Grolsch cause a mate's leaving, and I've realised that my not-drinking-every-day has left me with a markedly reduced tolerance. Well, probably not, I probably just never really sobered up before.

So Badge, it looks like I'm gonna come to Bristol for the night on the 2nd. You up for it? I'll buy you a wee badger-sized nip of sherry if you like :)

at most of the central london stations, theres carling sponsored spots where buskers play. just throw 'em 50p or so and sit/stand there and draw them. as long as you dont mind the person looking at you.. or the occassional person giving you a look... its really good. i tried it a few times, none of them are bothered, in fact most of them seem to enjoy it.

But it's my turn at painting it at the moment, better get back on it :)

Bah! You slack arses!!! I've already finished two collaborations and half of you have forgotten to do ANYTHING. I think I need to organise some sort of prize for the next person to say theirs is finished. Hm.. suggestions welcome.

Oh, and in true *edit* style (not edite, she just lurks) I have to say that me and kim were the two main ones, though we accepted help from an almost-relative of Molly's who was most lovely (and asked to be invited to ca types of things - molly, up to you if you extend the offer) and a few other drunkards with smiley faces to contribute. We had so much fun it was scary, and I can't believe just how god damn wall we covered. Too too much fun.

Howdy folks. How many turns have each of you had so far on the collabs? Me and Adam have yet to have our second due to a hectic week!. I was away all weekend and am working on site today and tomorrow and running classes both evenings. Cant we agree on a set amount of one hour turns as opposed to a date?. That way we should all end up with something worked up to around the same level of completion?

[void]
August 29th, 2006, 11:11 AM
Actually i was thinking that next time if we do one it would be nice to only take one turn each but maybe a bit longer duration like 2 hours each. That way theres not so much transfering of files and its suprising how little you get done in one hour. I felt i was just getting into my stride last time then youve got to stop.

Nice idea ad, we could go even longer and do a day each next time. The only thing with that is the person who takes the second turn will be the only one who responds to the others work. That aside, i'm asking for an extension till thursday night, that way we both get at least two turns each. There is no way i can get any time in before then. You finished your second turn ad? if so i'll be on msn when i get back from class tonight around 9 30. If you upload it again i can just right click and save.

Dirty C
August 29th, 2006, 12:15 PM
Ok, personally I think that it's good to respond to what someone's done, so I think at least two goes each, 3 tops.

Having said that, I'm really keen to do some 3-way collaborations. But they're more fun if it's not a strict topic - ie: people can go totally freestyle and change stuff as much as they like. This is like what they did in Montreal. But a strict time limit has to exist so someone doesn't render something so heavily that it can't be changed enough to fit the overall composition, and they don't get too precious about it.

Finding one hour isn't that hard, guys. Remember that tv program you watched last night that, frankly, wasn't that great? Yeah. And you could be doing analogue turns as well, like sketchbook stuff.

I was gonna go for the 20" imac, as much as i would love a mac pro they are way too much money. Plus you can't buy one without a 30" display on principle.

Yeah it would be cool to take a raincheck untill i get back up n running. This means i wont be online (appart from tommorow, its my last day at work) until we get our net connection established in the new house which might take a week or 2.

Oh and any mac savvy people i have some questions about drive partitions and pc software compatibility with the new intel macs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dirty C
August 30th, 2006, 10:14 AM
Don't partition it, use Parallels, which is like VMWare. You just allocate the hard disk size within that, and it's all handled. Also, you can run both windows and mac os x at the same time then, both at native hardware speeds. ie: no problems with rebooting to do stuff. Can even run Linux in another window if you want.

The guy who sits opposite me says there's been no problems with software compatibility that he knows of, and he runs loadsa shit on his windows within parallels.

It's shit hot btw, I've played with it a bit.

**edit:
Regarding Cardiff, is it really just me that's going out there now?? Come on you lot, it's barely further than Bristol and nobody had any problem with that last time! Well sod it, I'm still up to catch up with Eri and the Welsh twiglets, so I'm going. And I think the next meet might have to be outside London as well. At least if I have anything to say about it.... *looks mean at you all*

**edit edit: for those of you who seem to be a bit demotivated just now, I have to say that I've always found it one of the most motivating things I can do to get me going again. Now I just have to think of fun things we can do while we're out there..

While the final piece may not be so great, I definitely learned a lot and I imagine yAdam probably did too... while I like the outcome, I think the most interesting part is the progression it went through, so I've made an animated GIF which you can find here (1Mb) (http://greveson.co.uk/collab-progress.gif).

Paul, thats cool! Turned out well I think. The step by step is really valuable... makes me see the crappy choices I made at certain points. Really up for doing more of these. I think the main problem with this one, being my first collab, is that sometimes I felt kind of stuck in certain places, dont know why it was. Not having a solid direction until a few hours in could have had something to do with it.

DC, Jon, yours looks great. Wasnt sure what it was at first... It looks like a bio-mechanical octopus/crab or something.:)
