the meet was very cool, thanks to every1 who helped me out during the day, biggest regret is i had to bugger off just as Koshime got there :( however it was closely followed by the fact that out of the 500 odd nandos within london the one that christian just "happened" to lead us to was smack bang in the middle of the gay pride festival....hmmm!?!
seriously cheers to u all specially DC and adam for their crits and advice on my stuff,

yeah. pity I didnt get a chance to meet everyone more or excahnge sketch ideas. Seriously I was shocked by teh gay pride parade...wondering whre everyone was or what these people wre up to in the middle of soho.
Today, post parade..SOHO is clean as it ever was. No sign of the singing/eating and mad cheer that was on (although it was arguably busier than World Cup even when Italy were playing semis....)

Molly: Whee~ Fran leaves for San Fran from 18th-26th so if we could work around that that'd be great.
#Edit: I like the colours you've chosen. The sketch is amazing...the only thing I could suggest would be to make the boots a little darker? I just think they'd fit in more that way. I'm thinkin' something along the lines of a dark, worn-out brown with hints of grey. Kinda starting to wish I took a more fashioney approach to mine. :S

molly, that is fucking sick. i absolutely love it.. though i don't suppose that comes as a shock seeing as the subject is a scantily clad femme. i don't think i can offer much in the way of crits atm, i'll wait until it's a bit more 'done'
naomi: that monument was nelson's column, and it was in trafalgar square not leicester square
i'm leaving for poland on the 8th and i'll be back on the 22nd... i pray the cardiff meet is not between then, although it seems likely it will be..

Molly - the sketch is amazing, but right now I don't think the colours do it justice. Perhaps if you pushed the values more on the pirate, especially the darks on her forward leg, it'd give a better sense of depth. I also think that she's way too cramped in that frame - if you added some height to the pic (and maybe some width), she'd also read better as part of a composition, because my eyes are going to her face and then coming close to being taken out of the picture.
Hopefully I'm not talking too much crap,
Mid.
edit: another problem might be the focus. In the drawing, it's heavily (and beautifully) on the eyes and face. With the colour, the contrast on the face is lessened and the focus is pulled up to her forehead, with the head-band, and also down to her forward leg.

awsome molly...you have improved a hell of a lot!!
Couple a things might help balance and 'finish' the piece though.
edges... pay careful attention to which edges are sharp and which soft. I can see you were doing that by attracting attention to the face, but there are other bits like her stocking that are sharp AND contrasted so they pull your attention. Its a trade off I think. Either sharpen her body contours up a bit more so it is in the same style as the sock (think it would work well) or blur the bits that take the attention. personally, sharpening up that boot, and her body to match the more illustrative style of the stocking would work well.
I do blab, dont I? aw well... One other thing would be to pay a bit closer attention to the way light hits the form. The lights behind gher are not effecting the surfaces of her clothes and her form as they should.... it looks front lit. Id either change the background so it looks a bit darker and frontlit to match the figure, or I would put the figure in shadow with edge lighting and maybe a glint in the eye. Its tricky. Your eye can only handle so much range, so you HAVE to expose a picture, just like a camera does for it to read realistically. here you are seeing everything exposed the same regardless of light.
oh, and just a thing that might put a spin on it, but I dunno if it will work, try maybe rotate the whole image 10 degrees or so anticlockwise....she is edy and full of attitude, but your composition is vertical...so she 'feels' balanced. tilting it might give it a lesss stable edge.
anyways, will stop now. I have to say though that whatever you'v been up to this last while, its worked. :D Looking forward to the final ;)
Molly
August 1st, 2006, 06:01 PM
Hey folks,
Midnight - hehe cheers man! I've cropped in to give the composition more dynamics; I wanted some diagonals going thru the picture(hence the bend in her legs and arms); I have seen what she'd look like dead center with more page on top and the sides, but I really didnt like it; it centered her far too much, thus taking away the cramped, 'cosy' feel I actually want in the pic. Shes meant to be on a pirate ship, so I suspect sleeping quaters would be small. ..;)
Kian - true true, thanks for ur crit:)
Sketchling - aw mate cheers for that. I'm still playing with definition of everything in the pic; but I hear what your saying re: lighting. 'Cos shes in a cabin, the only light available would be from lamps/candles. (note to self-paint a candle...) So, Im undecided between front lighting her, or back lighting her....
I do agree with you about the anti-clockwise rotate. The diagonals I want would be expressed more...
back to it Cheers folks :):):)

Molly im gonna have to join the praise chorus and say thats awesome. At the moment the sketch is my fav stage, the only thing i can offer is maybe a slightly more monochromatic palette would work, at the moment the colours are fighting each other a bit.
On the cardiff meet, weekends would be way better, and after the 1st of september would be excellent. Then works finished and i wouldn't have to worry about getting back early.

Here they are again: 27th Aug - 3rd September <----the next meet is most likely to be squished sometime then as people would be back from their trips/hols and still be off school (just about...)
Luckily they're quite nice where I work so I can book days off easily. Only catch is that I'd be earning less cash, which I'm saving for the next workshop. So yeah, give us a shout if you're free around those times to do a Cardiff meet. :)

Digital painting isnt very processor or ram hungry unless you work with HUGE canvas' which you wont be doing at this point, 512mb or ram should be adequate for what you need, there arnt really any 'must haves' appart from a decent tablet IMO. One thing that you might like is to get a laptop with bluetooth as some of the latest tablets have it and then you can paint on the move without wires or set up time, i think this is only on the graphire series atm though i may be wrong. I think that any recent laptop should handle your needs to be honest.
Now for someone to come and tell me how wrong i am.
Hope it helps.
Badger
August 8th, 2006, 04:00 PM
I think 1 gig of ram is a must, processor wise go with the fastest you can afford, or are willing to spend, i haven't used a dual core yet. But a must have is a big cache, you'll need it digi painting. Make sure its gonna be fairly solid and is well cooled, cause it'll get hot juggling textures, pressure sensitivity and brush engines. Also if you are running faster then there is less chance of crashing, I use a 1gig RAM, 1.8 Pentium M which was a fair bit when i got it and now i'm trying to work out how to a desktop cause i need something faster.
You are going to be working on fairly big files if you want to print stuff out and keep the quality.
Just my experiences.

Quicksilver
August 8th, 2006, 04:55 PM
Yeah, I defo agree with Josh - have at least 1gig of RAM - any less (k, ~700MB's kinda pushing it) and your painting experience is more likely to be disappointing due to brush lag, pauses and stupidly long saving times.
Heck, I worked at 72dpi, 800xsomething res for my Girls' TD piece and my laptop kept stopping to think after every brush stroke (I've got around 500MB RAM lodged in there. Or 700ish - I forget).
[hugs compy] The laptop's just for browsin' now :D

I dunno to be honest when your working to a budget i dont know how far your gonna get going after a wacom and 512 of ram. Your gonna have to focus on the foundations of painting to begin with anyway and not get caught up with textured brushes etc until later, its not the tools that make te artist.
Edit: hahaha scratch that i just said your post danny and i think youll be fine with the laptop you can get for the money now.
Appart from watch out for 'shared/integrated' graphics, i dont know about laptops but on a desktop it means way slower performance on graphics demands because it has to use the processor and borrow from the other hardware instead of being an independant card.
Welcome mrdigs, yeah meets are pretty regular, youve got some nice life drawings dude.
although most people get by with an a5 size wacom the a4 will be huge due to the border area, i dont know about too many others but cai christian and me all have the same size intous and its fine.

Personally, I always say the same thing. Get a mac. They're solid, they last for way longer than PCs (most people get the shits with their PC after a year to 18 months, where most mac owners I know are happy using theirs for 3 years). Also all the components are high quality and it comes with everything youj'll want. That's why they're a bit more expensive.
Having said that, you really want something with a 15" screen or bigger. And you can't get a mac with that that cheap. But anything you can get for that price won't have anything beyond a celeron level chip anyway. So you'll be a bit stuck, I reckon.
Dirty C
August 8th, 2006, 06:40 PM
edit to that: if you are hardcore and stick to one or two layers, you should be fine. That's good practice as well, cause you'll improve much faster if you paint that way.

get a tablet PC which utilizes a duo core chip. Until Macs produce tablet Macs.. its a choice of Laptop + wacom tablet....or tablet PC all in one. just ensure battery life is LOooong
sketchling
August 9th, 2006, 04:55 AM
yeah...one gig minimum. The latest version of windows with all the lil things one always installs ALWAYS ends up using most of 512...leaving photoshop nothing to run on. So it uses the hard drive...and is slow. Speaking of which, a laptop with a harddrive at least 5200rpm would be good...slower and photoshop suffers.
oh, and if you want cheap, high quality ram have a look at crucial.com. Thats where I bought the ram I put in my tablet and it saved me a packet.

August 9th, 2006, 05:07 AM
haha i bet you regret asking now.... I don't know of any tablet pc's that have pressure sensitivity which is a big drawback as it takes away a lot of the intuitive'ness' of digital painting making you rely on typing in the opacity.

I'm with DC, Mac's all the way. Up until recently I hadn't had a Mac for around 7 years. Went out and took the plunge, dual 2.7 gig mac with 3 gig of ram. Apart from it not giving me an ounce of trouble since i've had it, little difference in photoshop and painter performance over my pc which is running at 3 gig HT p4 with a gig of ram. Still get brush lag using larger rendered brushes on a high res canvas. Sure they'll iron that out with each new version.
Getting a second mac soon, but just holding out to see what the next intel based machine looks like. Considering a tablet or laptop, something incredibly appealing about sitting in a coffee shop not only with a sketchbook but a computer as well! Neat.

How many pcs of any kind can you say that about?
Macs are reliable, they last longer, and NEVER GET VIRUSES. Every time I hear someoen saying they lost all their data on their disk or whatever, I just shake my head.

Granted that macs have a stabler enviroment, Windows /mac enviroment nuts and bolts are now the same. Just differnet names and packaging. And, the fact that Windows is going down the route of connecting you to everything and everything to you....
time machine = is the same as qindows restore point. I have not had a viral attack on my pc systems in 7 years. you just need to "optimise" buggy Xp as soon as you get it. i.e
Anyways, if you want to obtain a decent windows based tablet PC for the moment,be prepared to optimize it like hell, then nothing can crash it...save a drop with water or onto the floot
There are two tablet PCs worth obtianing at the moment, but some duo core pcs are also out, except toshiba has crap reliablity and short battery life.so steer clear ..ish
Buy all the memory you can handle. 2Gb or more and download all the drivers you need. Then its time to make a godly machine
Step 1 - kill your darlins (i.e start murdering windows xp for a truly stable OS)
1/ virgin install
2/ disable 35 subroutines
3/ disable special effects for photoshop greatness
4/ stop xp from connecting to your fridge
5/ stop plug and pray
6/ change paging file to 1.5x memory
7/ disable RPC protocol. Now Xp cannot connect to your car (although with vista, your car will make your PC bootup and offload files/work at leisure then shutdown. damn
- create restore point 1
Step 2
Optimise applications
- allocate OS to give photoshop and painter 75% memory
- Firewall up
- Antiviral up
- SDbot as secodn line defense up
- optimise Net applications
Disable internet explorer.
Install firefox and thunderbird and fasterfox and filezilla
- optimise paint programs
Remove gimp setting on photoshop and painter
- optimise battery life for hibernation so that your portable painting device shoudl now have 4-6.5 hours of painting time!
That will work fine. My tablet PC has been working wonderfull for over 8 months now,and starts/stops quite fast.

Know what I found weird, actually? When I used Kim's tablet, I didn't like my hand getting int he way of the picture. I've actually grown to like the accuracy afforded by using the graphics tablet.
Still waiting for Corel and Adobe to rewrite their apps to be native Intel for the mac. I think right now that running them under windows on the windows partition of one of the new macs will actually run a lot faster than on the os x partition. *shudder*.

Thats an ultra delicate situation tie. If we are to live in truly a first world free country, then we must accept (to a degree) all the cultures within the country as fair as each other. We cannot risk segregating muslims. As increased segregation will only breed more terrorism. The only way is communication. Either that, or all out war. Civil war.

Just today I noticed a blurry image of mine on CA, then I checked my site and they were all blurry too... Deleted all the images and started to upload again, but they're blurry as well! I thought it could be something to do with the sizes, but some are as small as 150kb so that can't be the issue... and photobucket resizes my images even though it says it wont if its under 1mb.....
Anyone know what might be going on, or of any other reliable hosts?

Watch what you say, the Muslim community are NOT bomb-making terrorists, in fact what I hate most about those dudes making bombs and shit is that it puts a bad name and a stereotype on Muslims as a whole, which is like saying Germans are nazi's, it's pathetic.

Tie, you have no idea what goes on without the public's knowledge. There is communcation AND action going on this very second. All so that we the public can live in blissful ignorance.
If you don't agree with communication, whats your alternative?

cai, i did watch what i said, you just didn't read it..i didn't say the whole muslim community were bomb making terrorists. and for the record, i didn't say all germans were nazis either. but at the time of WW2, the vast majority of german germans {not germans of jewish descent} supported the nazis, and there was little opposition until the last years of the war.
but that's not implying that the majority of muslims are in support of terrorism. what i'm saying is that, you could not convince the nazi supporters by reaching out, and you can not do that here either. the minority that do need reaching out to won't be changed. i quite clearly said the fringe of muslim society.

understand that there are three main things that breed terrorism
1. the political climate that breeds anger and frustration & alienation
2. the clerics and propaganda that convert this frustration into extremism
3. the training camps that turn these extremists into active terrorists
backwards working is the way to do it... first we should get pakistan out of denial and tell them that they have to cooperate, and then close all the training camps there. {of the q'ran schools there.. apparently around 10% are terrorist training camps}.. just tackling all of the training facilities, so that even if there were extremists, they could not get training and could not bomb anyone.
this could be done fairly quickly
then comes the next step.. fight extremist propaganda in the west. deport all extremist clerics that preach hate.. but at the same time, support & communicate to all moderate muslims, help them integrate into western society
this could take months.. years
the last step would be changing the political climate that breeds the frustration.. the grievances of the islamic world. and that is the situation in the middle east..
this will take years. half a century if we're lucky...
there is much more to be done than just communication.

i got some bridgman books a while ago.. and they're quite useful.. but i feel that before i tackle those, i'd rather i tried loomis' stuff.. it starts off easier and with proportions, and goes into more depth about anatomy {at least the parts that matter for me atm}... i'm making a real effort to get through his books {starting with the figures one} but i'd like a few tips on how to 'approach' it.. how much drawing i should do for every page, what i should write down, where i should start.. some of the diagrams at the start, for instance, like drawing in relation the horizon and perspective, are not what i want to learn at the moment, i'd like to tackle anatomy before perspective and foreshortening, but i'm not sure if this is correct..
yeah.. well.. any help?

Dynamic anatomy by hogarth seems to make everything click for me somehow. The anatomy in the book, is far from medically acurate, however, the principles really have helped me out. Ive read the thing about three or four times now.
Dirty C
August 12th, 2006, 04:58 PM
yeah, hogarth was the one for me.
Tie, I think the way to approach it isn't to look at it on a page-by-page basis. you want to read through the whole thing, practice bits of it and go through the whole thing. don't try to memorise the whole book or whatever, and don't be too hard on yourself. you'll find that you'll remember maybe half a dozen things. later on, you'll pick up the book again and remember a whole bunch more bits and pieces.
i view these books as a long term investment in learning. it's always worth picking them up and learning something new from them. don't forget, it took these guys a lifetime to learn what they wrote down, so don't stress too much about getting it all in one read-through :)
having said that, i wish my copies weren't in storage :'(

No interview, but I need to get it to them quickly - Carl basically said 'a week is cool, but don't take too long' and that was last week :S
The tough thing is that it's looking like all the stressing I did in the last three or four weeks was for nothing. Essentially, all the work I've done in that period has made everyone's 'don't send it' list.
The problem is, I know I needed to improve some things between then and now. And apparently all I've done is make things worse.
You can begin to see why this whole thign has been somewhat stressful..

As many times as we can get away with it, I believe :P
Ok guys. I've got a vast amount of stuff potentially going into the portfolio. Any help you can be whittling it down would be extermely appreciated. THe format is just, go to the site and tell me which ones you think I should ditch. That seems to be easier than inclusion. Any other suggestions are also welcome.
Tis here: http://toeslikefingers.com/portfolio/index.html
Thanks!

Whats wrong with 20 and 30 kian? 30 has some great texture work and good gesture and 20, although the posture is a little off is painted well. Good luck christian, you'll get in no worries. Must be like getting into your no1 choice uni all over again. All i can recommend is more stuff from life, your anatomy is looking pretty good, gesture is the key i reckon. It's like preaching to the converted coz you know your shit dude, i'd just spend a little more time doing some "subway sketching". Just capture the essence of a pose without any detail. Rapid stuff. Let me know how the ca school works out.

Hmmm, might be able to make it. What exactly will we be doing just chilling or going to a museum or somat?

I chose 20 simply because I prefer the skeleto-muscular sketch of 11 over it.
And 30 because although I agree, there's great texture, the forms and masses don't read half as good as the majority of the work. And in my (not much I know) experience, form always wins over texture. I am being as honest as I can be here. Looking at it from an employers POV.

DC: Damn thats hard dude.... what I can say is that 7, 10, 4, 15, 16, 24 and 27 should 100% be in. They show ya at your best. Good luck choosing from the rest, cause they are all good, but those are my favorites. (id have chosen 04 as well, but being a straight portrait, the others have more power.)
:)K
P.S. Im not too sure 1 or 3 should go in...they seem out of place to me in a portfolio. Good luck!!!

I'm guessing just chilling and drawing. I haven't checked out the museum yet (can't remember where it is, lol), but I'm not sure if it would be open anyway, as we'll be meeting up on a Sunday.
Christian: You keeping a tally on these numbers? :P
Methinks 4, 9, 11 (you've already got the same model in the same angle in your portfolio - no point showing it again), 19, 22 (maybe you could crop it, 'cause the lil' guy's great - it's the big guy which is letting it down, imo) and 26.
*KEEEEEEEP* 6, 7, 8, 14 (marked as 01 for some reason), 15 and 24.
Defo churn out an enviro or two if ya can.
Best of luck :)

A few of you have said 4. That's one of those in my sb that gets regular 'best thing you've done' comments, and also i definitely need some stuff from life. So, I think I'll keep that one, though it seems against the flow.
The bot and tank thing is a bit frustrating, cause while it's not that great as a pic, it's also the most complete piece of design I've done. So it's hard for me to yank that out, cause nothing else is that complete.
Damn, I just can't see me finishing this befoer the weekend - wish I didn't have this sodding job.
As for definitely getting in - I genui9nely have no idea what my chances are at all. No idea who else is applying. Don't forget, they may well be people who don't post..

Ah... I didnt realise 4 was from life :) Then definitly include it. Its not the execution of that one which made me not choose it, it was mainly the fact that a portrait from yer head has less impact than some of the other pics... from life thats just awsome dude. :) Yer gonna blow em away I say.

Christian, its an awesome portfolio, good luck!! Just wondering what made you not include the guy in the diving mask? Not saying you should have, but I thought it was a really quality piece...
Sitting/eating/drawing/frisbee sounds good to me! Also, i'll bring my diabolo along and entertain you all with that for 10 minutes..
