Oh well, worth a try. Maybe you should become one of those double people.
@Pixelherder, a few more ideas.
1) Go french impressionist stylie and hire a prossie.
2) Draw yourself in you kecks, dont look at your bits though as you'll go blind.
3) Travel to Essex and pick up any stereotypical random girl, much like prossie only doesnt cost anything to begin with, then however wastes money on cheap copy of LV bag etc etc.
Again as useful as a blind leper monkey, but my eyes still arent going square :alien1:
P.S. In case you didnt know Rocky won! :waves:

Pixelherder - I have some mates who used to go to a life drawing class in Derby, but I don't think it's on the go anymore. There must be something in Notts. I'll ask around and let you know...
Acuna_read's prossie idea isn't all that bad, you know - there are plenty of opportunities to see naked or semi-naked humans online at various free webcam sites / portals. The image may be smaller than a postcard, but the models don't tend to move around very much and if there's a chat feature, you can even pose them! If that feels a bit shady, go and sit in the park or the pub for an endless supply of unknowing models.
I'd like to try and get down to one of these London meets if you guys don't mind. It won't be for a while, but how's the driving in the smoke these days? Are you guys fairly central, or out in the 'burbs?

Um, yeah, I was really keen to go, but then I figured out (ok, my gf reminded me) that I'm going to Sardinia on the Sunday. So pretty difficult to work out doing both. Sucks, i was really keen, but there you go.
To a certain extent, I reckon it's pretty easy to learn the same things over and over if you kep going to the workshops. This one in Berlin is the exception, cause it's small and there'll be alot of personal focus. The meeting round my place is about the most useful info I can think of! Damn showy offy painters :)

Well, im not sure really. My Sister's (2 years older, so 21/22) friend works there as a receptionist i think, and she has sent a CV round to a few companies to see if anything comes up. The main one was a comapny called "Media aspects". So maybe there, thats all i know. So basically im a CV , ill put it about anywhere!
Ive now got an interview from a photgraphy company in Tunbridge Wells on the 26th and am doing a re-crash course in Photshop and to get a portfolio together, just bought a tablet so should be ok. It's only image manipulation so just airbrushing etc... :help:
I'd love to go to Germany, but have just realised that I have no passport, and have realised for a long time I have no money! But the Belgium mini one sounds good, if i could get things sorted. But id be up for a London one, or even trips over to Paris etc.
P.S. I sometimes go into the Nat gallery. and then down to Motorbooks(i think its called that but have now forgotten where it is) and Magma. So if you see a shoulder haired 12yr old (im actually 18) looking ginger lad walking around, thats me!
P.S.S. Molly watched neighbours again today and its scary how much you look like her! :D

Hey Aidan, not familiar with Nottingham, but there must be a college that does drop in life drawin classes or summink. If ur going to start ur own group, maybe ask a few friends first, see if any are up for modelling. They dont have to be fully naked...Im lucky enough to have one friend whos up for it.(but Im not sure if she'd pose for a group ^_^.)Mollyx
i wish i could say i had similarly accomodating friends. Unfortunately I imagine nott is also a bit out the way...SOooo until a willing exhibitonist turns up though, i've put the word out "on the street" about classes , so we'll see what comes of that. I've tried to find some evening courses already, but in my experience there are "arty" towns (galway, ireland, comes highly recmommended from this ex-native) and those that arent. so far nottingham is seeming more like the latter, but i'm willing to be proved wrong.
@Pixelherder, no idea how to do that. But thought of putting up small adds in local art shops? maybe one or two colleges?
you sir, are a god amongst men (and women). I'll trawl the local artshops at the coming weeks and see what i can uncover
@Pixelherder, a few more ideas.
Very, er, "bohemien". I wonder if the police are equally enlightened..."honest officer, i was merely trying to capture her ESSENCE.....OW!"
Pixelherder - I have some mates who used to go to a life drawing class in Derby, but I don't think it's on the go anymore. There must be something in Notts. I'll ask around and let you know...

Derby is way out of my way, but if you find anyone who knows anyone more notts based then i'm all ears. And pencils. And i already do quite a lot of photo-based stuff - in the absence of real people its a pretty good substitute. Dont know about the pub/park people watching thing though....you know that feeling you get when you KNOW youre being stared at...? Then again, maybe unnerving a few random strangers is the perfect way to spend an evening.
thanks for the suggestions ya'll!

You can always go and sit in galleries during the day as well, if you go then. And most are FREE :fruit: which is my favourite word in London.
Assuming i can bunk on trains I can get more drinks as well, or lets hope i get one of these jobs im applying too

If you want the top ones then they are all in London im afraid, though still good ones outside. Dont know which ones are good, but if you dont know then go to http://www.ucas.co.uk/
Just do a search on courses and/or location etc... Gives you all that at least narrows it down. Depends where ya wan to live too. I'd try and find something in the south-west personally. I know Brighton(or is it Borunemouth) do good 3-D stuff. Anyway both are reasonably good places too live, and fairly cheap. Both have better weather and are more relaxed than London, whilst still having most of your normal student needs.
Watch out for Barry boys (accompanied by school childre......I mean their girlfriends) doing "cruises". If you like seeing sill Saxo's and assholes in Astra's then your ok though! :jump1:

Just wanted to add that Fine Art courses are few and far between over here. It either concentrates on getting you ready for work, ie design etc or goes to conceptual stuff. There are some good courses out there though, just gotta find them. Then tailor the course to your needs, I'd suggest speaking to the course leader/tutor even before attending any interviews. Ask them how much you can push the course about, most are pretty flexible.
Just thought id add, Koshime will be good going to the sketch groups if god-forbid anyone gets run-over/attacked/drunk etc...
And to Koshime, would you have any idea of how I could get into theatres to draw muscles and tissues in the future? Would it be allowed at all? assuming I can stomach it :barfing: , ive had an ASD which is fun waking up with so I think i can :hello!:

Acuna - Yeh bournemouth sounds good for 3d, but i'm not really into 3d anymore, more of a fineart/illustration based course.
I wouldn't mind taking a year out and working as long as I get to draw alot, i'm drawing all day at the moment and it feels good.
Koshime, london sounds good but I still have worries about the cost, even if I commute etc.
What has anyone else done university wise?
I have to get the course through clearing because I applied for architecture initially, thinking it would be a good thing to help me get into 3d/conceptart but i'm not passionate about it so I decided to withdraw my offers.
I'll check ucas...

troy: If you're after an illustration degree, may I recommend that you DON'T pick Swindon. They're way more into the pretentious side of things there. One of the teachers actually told me that the reason people come here ISN'T so they can get a professional job and further ones skills, but to make their art deeper! Shocking.
We all passed, but after being told for the entire 3rd year that his project was fine to do they changed their mind 3 days before the end of the degree and told him to start again! He's now looking into a career for finance!
And furthermore, they don't believe in using computers for art. :realmad:
I'm going to stop now before I go and get my degree so that I can staple it to that lecturers head! :evilbat:

University choices, frustrating buisiness. I'm hoping to do history of art, and then carry on my art alongside the course, possibly combined with classic civilisations just for fun and then I could draw, epic gods / battles etc. :p Then if I wanted to pursue this line further I could always do a masters in illustration or something similar.
Unrelated i thought i'd pass this on, an article I read i thought some of you might find interesting on drawing becoming more popular.

Of course i doubt you'd ever get that lot to attribute the resurgence to its true cause: comic books and japanese cartoons..
And I can't do this Wednesday, I'm actually going to Russian Landscapes in the Time of Tolstoy at the National Gallery with a few people.
On the other hand though, is anyone a Tate member? I have been for nearly a year, and not really used it. But yesterday we went to the Tate Modern to see Edward Hopper, and I discovered that the members room upstairs is one of the best spots in the city. If anyone is, I'd love to take a few of us up there to do some drawing one time - it's brilliant.

I've decided I might go to the Tate Modern again on Saturday and a)take a look at some next-type shit and b)go up to the members lounge balcony and draw for a few hours. Kickass place to do it. I do have room for one more person on my membership, so if anyone wants to tag along, let me know.

Oh yeah, the Russian exhibition was wicked. I walked in and went "Oh shit, it's just a bunch of paintings of pine trees, this is gonna suck" But when you start looking at Shishkin's paintings you get sucked in. He paints more realistic 3d scenes than I've ever seen, you really feel like you're standing there.

I can't be arsed reading that, the leaflety jobby I got at work was bad enough, I think the best plan of action in the event of imminent nuclear attack would probably be, nick a lorry full of tinned food, disappear down a cave, and if you have time kill all politicians close at hand.

Speaking for the five people in my lounge, we accept. So, maggots, get ready.
The first thing is, we need to change the deadline. Several of us are in Berlin for Marko and Android's workshop until the day before, and I'm in Sardinia until the 6th. So how about Wednesday the 18th for the deadline, and this Wednesday, the 4th, for the challenges? It's quick, but it's only one drawing, and letting these things take too long is the best way to get slack and not bother.
How's that?
Posting this over there as well.

1) To stp them silly Washington creatures from being at the top :D
and
2) To wonder if yous lot (ie Londoners, home counties and anyone who can afford the fare) are gonna meet up before the 19th for encouragement and general ego boosting before the deadline.
Any thoughts?(that are relevant to this post :bashful: )
Theyre gonna wish thed gone to sleep after this contest! :}

Awight.
Anyone keen to meet up tomorrow night? (Wednesday). I'd like to hassle Kim and get some tips for the battle styles, as I kinda think I'm gonna give up on what i was doing.
Somewhere where we can spread out and I can bring my laptop is probably the best. Soho might be a bit shit in that case. I'm happy to nominate somewhere in Angel, as obviously there's loads, but if anyone has a better idea, let me know.

Hey ppl,
dirty_c - I'm well up for Weds night.
I was thinking of The Horniman pub in London Bridge. It's by the River, big place, we could sit inside, theres a small upstairs bit we could hang in.
Dunno, seems like a nice place:
London Bridge (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=533278&y=180393&z=1&sv=533250,180250&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf)
The arrow is pointing to a Ship, if u look below, theres 'The Hays Galleria.' the Horniman pub is through there, on the river front.
It's 5 min from London Bridge Stn, and on the Northern Line, so easy to get home. Sketchling, if you want we could meet nearer SoHo, I don't mind going there, I know the distance you gotta travel....
its just an idea...

Hey, kids.
Seeing as we're a bit spread out, most of us won't get the chance to meet up before the Drizzledome deadline - do you think there'd be any benefit from a virtual meeting to discuss / crit our entries?
Obviously we can post WIPs here, but not everyone may wish to have their stuff displayed publicly and those sneaky Seattlites will get to hear our secrets.
I can't be arsed with those instant messenger things, so I thought perhaps it would work best via email - if we all share email addresses, it'd be easy to send links to sketches around to everyone in the group, and we'd soon get some dialogue going. Only problem is that an email frenzy to a dozen recipients might start to get a bit messy. Poshspice works with me, so we can bounce ideas off each other, but it's good to get a fresh set of eyes on your work from time to time...
What do you think?

acuna_read told me about this. There's a free screening of Back To The Future in Greenwich Park, this Saturday 14th Aug.
I know, I know, we should be working on our Challenge, BUT if anyones up for it, I'll be heading over there with the BF around 7pm. Nice park, good view over Canary Wharf/London.
Most likely to be packed out, but it's a biiiig park so...

No glass is allowed apparently :upset: but ive no idea how they will check this as i dont think it gonna be cordoned off. Just dont try taking handfulls of pint glasses in. But plastic is allowed.

Glad its not just me who hasn't really got much yet. I've been putting loads of time in to decisions that don't really matter. Mines wizard v warrior. I keep thinking i'm writing a book about them or something. Well anyway i'm trying to keep it as simple as possible at first and then add more in the way of interesting detail on armour and a pretty spell effect or something. I have a tendancy to choose the most complicated out of all options.
I'm a bit in the dark about how much work is actually expected for this and how seriously everyone is taking it. I guess i'll just try and do the best I can do. :teeth:

I think next time we'll rip the guts out of it and make it a week, to be honest. To begin with, everyone was pretty serious, but then all tailed off. With a week, you'll just get going and do it. At the time, two weeks sounded pretty fast, but I reckon the faster the better.
Have to say though, the feedback from alex, molly and senor read was invaluable. that's the best thing about the meets - it doesn't matter what someone's skill level is, you can invariably learn something from them. Still gotta set my 4d mouse up kaiser-style though.

re-hydrating yourself with vodka after 4 hours of walking, no food or water gives you a headache. Really, it does.
I put up the pictures on photobucket, but I'm afraid I have no idea how to make a neat little page, so I'm going to swarm this post with links. These picture are from the meeting, direct from the London Bridge, when everyone took my swinging balls.....er poi.. and swung them around their head. Resulting in hitting themselves. Repeatedly.
So here they are. 20 of em.
(The first sequence is carefully articulated by dirty C where he's dancin' he's swingin' he goes for the double whoop tripple decker something, whoooooomp, looked painful. - trust me I know the feeling.)

I work from home with a large young family so I suspect that trips to the Smoke for a smoke may be out of my league for the moment, however I possibly can send some Tesco noodles for that bath Alex is planning (take out the chilli bits first though if you are using the Blue Dragon ones - or wear airtight underwear)

Black Neon and Old Blue...welcome aboard!
I would take a wild guess that everyone is super busy with either life or this seattle challenge which is why you haven't had much response. Dont take it personally, sometimes this place goes days without an entry. Sometimes its going all day!
The rest of you.....you motley crew...
I'm not going to have much time to do much on my entry as this week is super busy, so I've spent a few hours today finishing up my idea.
It's been...interesting. I've not used Pencil and markers etc for this kind of thing in a long time. And Greyscale only too....(Gasmasks Idea) I have to say though it was kinda fun to get back to the old roots...I dont really care whether I win or not, because its been a bit of fun to just play with the concept ' Is that it? ' and come up with something I found appropriate. You'll see it soon enough...hopefully you'll all appreciate it.
Anyway, good luck to you all, lets hope we've all enjoyed it eh!

Thanks guys, I managed to find a concepts artist that does mechs, so I can now relax and pile out 3d again. Im still practicing my thumbnailing though so that I can eventually do my own concept stuff. Its kind of embarrasing as a lot of good 3d artists are great sketchers, I however... am not still ;) Practice... drink... practice...

nb. I know its not a sketch however I thought I may as well contribute something :)
I worked on this for 3 months nearly as a training pack to show other people how to model big mechanical things. I call this one "Bert"

Hey fellas,
Fuckin laptop is giving me grief...
OK, sorted, heres my WIP, i have posted the second and third versions, the first is somewhere else, anyway, its supposed to be a demon of the seas and skys. Its not meant to be mean or evil, just plain ole nice and simple.
It suposed to be able to swim and fly,so...
1st attempt:

2nd attempt. Vyceroy & Donkeyslayer were online today, and gave me a few tips. This one i used reference of manta ray for the wings:

Oooh I like it, it kind of grew on me the more i looked at it. Very mysterious, looks a bit melancholy. I bet a demon that wasnt evil or good wouldnt have many friends. Especially all out there alone in the ocean.
I can't wait to see everyones work, i'm going to really set some time aside and make the most of them. I wish I had done more work on mine now. I've only touched on anaotomy briefly 1 week, so wizard v warrior was a bit of a task for me.
Sorry no WIP yet.
Oh and i mentioned good things being up here in Manchester
THE most extensive show of Walter Sickert’s drawings ever to be exhibited comes to Manchester... (http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/entertainment/arts/s/125/125841_drawing_is_the_thing_for_autumn.html)

Hey molly! I really loved the clouds in the first one... the subtle variations of hue were gorgeous. Maybe put a bit of the complimentary into the ray itself... its only 2 hues when it could be many... even a bland colour can have many hues..e and saturations in an area... that makes it more interesting. Love the idea, its a very interesting image. :D

you guys got some good work goin!
Molly I think I like the second one also, (seems to make more sense it seems like a siluetted type pic, because of the lightrays in the back, but I would say bump up some of the highlights in the front from reflected water, also I think you should extend the composition so the creature isn't right in the middle.) but ya got a cool creature going :) (maybe add water drops as if he just jumped outta the water, he looks like he should be slimy)
You have a cool colour scheme in your picture sketchling, I really like the atmosphere you are building in it. I'm not sure what to crit in it but it's coming along great.
Thanks for the great feedback on the sketches everyone, I need to start painting them now(probably going to go with 2 top or 4 top), just spent the last hour or two working up the sketch against undertow, so if anyone has some harsh critiques hit me!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Kishlahar/WIP/Battlebu.jpg
Also, anyone interested in a house party? I got a free house up here (housemates home for summer) so we could get together for a day or two to draw, party, (cheap drinking here) etc, which means if you have to travel far you don't need to go home the same day, just an idea that I'll throw out there, see what you guys think.
Alrighty. Keep drawing. Watch out for the flamingos.

i really dig both of them, alex. more so the first one, but i'm sure that once the clarity is uppsed a little on the second one, it'll be of the same standard. that's the only advice i'd give, btw, you need to pump up the clarity, especially close to the viewer.

Yo!
Alex, those rock! The second could be made more gothic with the little spiky things cathedrals have all over the roof... get some reference and play with it maybe. I love the feel of it though. if ya want a cool way of gettin realistic glow from lights, try using a saturated, dark brush set to 'colour dodge' (its 'glow' in painter) ... it really does light glows very well. good old ryan church.
I must say though that the first one gets me from a compositional angle... it is a really powerful image. Gorgeous.
AND ( :blahblah: ) I am up for that houseparty indeed... sounds really cool. Not this weekend as germany is appenin, but plans should be made methinks!!!

I had the pleasure also of viewing dirty_c's other sketch, dunno if ur gonna post it here geeza, but it blew me away, loved the angle on that one:) nice..
As far as a house party at Alex's I'm up for it. Tho Germany this weekend (woohoo!), and next weekend is my birthday(woohoo-oo!), so I'll be out of the picture there. My sister wants to throw a bbq for me at her house, but she lives in Bromley(Sth East of London) so access for folks will be difficult. I may chamge my mind, and make it more Central London. Hey all, sorry to spam the thread with this, but I have questions, again..
If I don't goto university this year i'm going to have to get a job, and I was under the impression some of you worked for small games developers in the uk, like summer pudding maybe?
Anyway, I wanted to know if 3d work i've done is good enough for any kind of lowly modeling/texturing position somewhere, and where to look.
Otherwise, can you show me an example of the kind of thing that that would be good enough? and do most places want a reel rather than examples?
Here are just a few examples, i've probably posted them before...

Head mesh (http://www.lindrickgolf.com/patrick/patrickhead.jpg)
Troll head (http://www.lindrickgolf.com/patrick/pattroll.jpg)
I'm improving with painting too, and getting into matte stuff but I don't have much to show at the moment...
Any advice would be appreaciated, thanks.

as an artist, the only qualification that matters is your portfolio. I cant count the number of cv's i've sifted through that had "2.1 in multimedia blah blah blah" in them, yet displayed a painful lack of anything remotely like basic art principles.
I think youre doing alright already :) , but as for summer internships - i guess they're out there, but i dont see that many...erm, maybe somewhere like EA might do that sort of thing - *cue lowpolymatt*....
and a personal opinion of mine - i dont know what kind of course youre going for, but if you want to be an artist then do an art/illustration course. Multimedia/game design courses might be great, but the danger is you spread yourself too thin.
I'd be interested in anyone elses take on this too, as i'm more than open to some healthy debate on the topic!
As for showreels, i'd recommend a multi-pronged attack. As i've learnt sometimes your stuff has to get past a receptionist first - a cd in an envelope looks the same as every other so make sure to include paper printouts/photocopies to grab their attention, and guarantee its passed along to the right people. Sending a link to a website can get the ball rolling, but nothings better than having something tangible lying around that people can pick up and see for themselves. And i know TV/film people usually favour vhs showreels, but i've always used cds. Depends on the industry i guess!
I'll shut up now...

Woah thanks Molly, yeh Uni is a good idea, but I might have to go next year, so this is my backup plan for getting a job that doesn't involve packing boxes of coffee all year...
Pixelherder- The course i'm hoping to do is fineart/illustration, but because i'm going through clearing it isn't garunteed that i'll get to do it this year...
What I really want to end up doing is illustration/matte painting, but 3d modeling and that kind of thing is something I think I could perhaps get a job doing, for now..
Thanks alot, very useful ideas.
- An internship sounds interesting if it could pay enough to live, anyone want to elaborate on the idea? lowpolymatt :) ?

@ Pixelherder/Troy, I cant tell you how many people have said dont specialise for a BA. I want(ed) to do transport design which is very competitive. So going for a Prod/Indutrial design degree makes alot of sense as it lets you apply for a broader range of work and theres still options to go into car design, or indeed study at Ma level.
That arguement was shit I basically typed what you did, but longer  , lets disagree on something for arguements sake!
So Troy, do a more general course at first, you may still change your mind as to exactly what you do during your time at Uni. As for job hunting join the que! Looks like im gonna become an accountants office junior at this rate! :blah: :bs:
Internships dont pay anything normally. If your lucky you will get travel money paid for but not likely.

i think we more or less agree - i think an "art course" will provide skills that are applicable to pretty much anything. Painting, drawing, sculpture etc. With this kind of background you can do anything from concept design, sculpting (3d modelling), pictures of your friends cat, comics, christmas cards...you name it. Whereas a computer games course is probably the most specific thing i can think of. Theres almost NO transferable skills from video games to any other career (i.e games designers/lo-poly modellers. Whereas generalists like animators and 2d-artists can move from film to tv to games) and NO_ONE of an artistic inclination ever needs to do a course in microsoft project or coding your first game in cobol!
I guess my final two words to sum up would be - craig mullins.

I hope some of this makes sense.

My plans for uni are hopefully classic civ or history art, preferable a combination of the two. I feel I could always go on a do an MA in illustration in something I decided this path really was right for me. But first I want to gain a bit more understanding about erm, the world in general. I aiming for these courses with my main priority being a course that will interest me most. They say enthusiasm and interest are two fundamental criterion for success.
I will be able to carry on drawing as a hobby, and i'm sure anything I learn in either of these two subjects will be give an interesting edge to a concept artist.

What you learn in university is invaluable I think. Its not just the actual skills and techniques you learn, its the new ways of thinking you are exposed to. You are taught to jog yerself out of a lot of assumptions and habits. I found the conceptual side of thinking the hardest to learn.. things like using metaphor and subtle hints to communicate a message instead of just showing the message... But yeah... I do suggest uni.. and you will meet a hell of a lot of cool people and have a great time.... :D Oh, and you wont sleep much. its shit hard work and people tell you straight up that your work is shit when it is... so ego's dont tend to last long...
But hey, its all good! Whatever you do, and whatever skills you need for work, a degree will teach ya to think critically and conceptually in a way that will help you do interesting work WHATEVER the medium.
EDIT: Oh, and for the record I did a degree in Graphic Design/Illustration. (during which I learned very little in tewrms of skills and technical stuff...learned more from CA.org!)

@Rhaucan, from the people I spoke to (professional designers mainly, some illustrators) they all agreed that a general degree gives you more opportunities at the end, and then to specialise at Ma level anyway. For some reason it seems to be (and i was told this) that A-levels are now only equivalent to GCSE's 10 years ago, Degree's are equivalent to A-levels and Ma's are equivalent to Degree's of 10 years ago. Thats from someone who worked in design and illustration for 30 years or so. I dont know whether thats thrue but it seems more and more people are studying Ma's, though could be wrong there too as im probably just more aware.
Even if you know what you want to do having a slightly different perspective may be beneficial when it comes to getting work, or indeed studying further.

I got it since I haven't bought any games in ages and I quite like it, but it does seem like its sticking to the formula of walk through corridor - monster growls and jumps out of hidden wall section behind you and scares you - kill monster, and repeat the process with a more baddass monster each time...
Nice game though, its pretty scary... but so far is very linear.
