This thread mooves too quickly, and sometimes with pointless banter, it has certainly stopped me from posting cos I cant keep up with the conversations.
I'll post when I really need to, (like my upcoming birthday party, but I doubt I'll get any takers from here...nevermind) There really isnt much for me to say; Im still painting, drawing, but all of thats at school, and I still havent got me an internet connection, so I cant post what I've done in the last few months; I got some anatomy studies, but there prolly quite boring; I've started my CA.org Calender TD, but I STILL need to post, and well, what I've done is cool, just wanna keep it under wraps till I absolutely neeed to show....but is ANYONE reading this? No, of course not...

Got nuthin else to say, blah blah blah museum, blah blah blah, gallery, blah blah blah part-time studies, blah blah blah meet up? blah blah blah drinks, blah blah blah blaaaaaah!

Why? well, it seems only a handful of my mates are gonna make the effort an come, and well, I dont think many other people are gonna wanna find a demon/monster costume, or they'll leave it till too late, and dont bother coming at all, so, to hell with it..doya think its because us British folk are far too conservative? Boring? Lack creativity?(<-lack creativity? Surely not...) :upset:

As far as a chat goes dude, cool whenever...:)

As far as workshops go, I wont be able to make it, due to money problems; I must concentrate on myself, and get clients and jobs etc before term starts in September, which I'm having trouble paying for already, and I gotta work hard before I can even consider a trip away. (tho, it would be nice to go, but wotever  ...)

As you can tell, Im extremely pissed off and I've let out a brain fart on all of you...:xpld:

Aww no, sorry to hear all that, Mollz. :( I know what you mean with the fancy dress thing. I'm cool with it, but can't afford to go to London much (probably won't go to the Anime Expo this Oct). Luckily, my mates are just as loyal and loony as me so my lasy birthday back was awesome! Altogether we had a hippy, pirate, vampire, army bloke, Willy Wonka, an angel, a terrorist (:nohope:), butterfly and a warrior. The others didn't dress up, buu.

Some vids (hopefully they don't mind me posting!)
Knights of the, er... (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/?action=view&current=58.flv)

Wheelbarrow race (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/?action=view&current=60.flv) <----that's me jumping out of the way/almost falling over. Took the wings off 'cause the wind was making it too much of a challenge to stand up straight/for long, haha.

3-legged race (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/?action=view&current=64.flv)

We also had a picnic and played Twister. Before all that we went to Tescos to get some cake. Twas funny trying to go through the queue sideways with my uber big butterfly wings (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/wings_perspective.jpg), lol.

This year I plan on going to a rough'n tumble (room with platforms and a pool of plastic balls) with us all in formal wear (ball/prom dresses/suits). :) Just need to find a place big enough.....

Aaaahh good memories. ^_^ Okay, point: Tekura, even if there're only a few of you willing ot dress up, go anyway - it'll be a great laugh with your more closer/wilder friends. :) And maybe it'll cool you down from all the pissey things goin' on. Either way, it'll make a memory for you and your mates, which is always cool.

ooh quicksilver, in terms of massive play rooms with ball pools and suchlike, my sister took a whole mass of her friends and some family to this place in devon called milky way (i think) for her 21st. its awesome, has a massive rough'n'tumble room as you put it with a sort of assault-course-for-kids-wrapped-in-foam theme going on. also things like archery and various different fun things including a ferret show. but the best part was the big room of kiddy rough'n'tumbleness. [edit] i just remembered, once you've paid to get in, the dodgems are free. i think that overrules the rough'n'tumble bit as the best.
the website (http://www.themilkyway.co.uk/) makes it out to be more space orientated and modern than it is but its still fooking awesome. potentially a bit of distance to get there though.

and im really sorry to hear about the party molly. hope everything is resolved before next year.

Hello hello ^^
I'm Marleen, 16 years of age and live in the Netherlands,

It just happens to be so that I'll be staying in Gorseinon, near Swansea, near Cardiff from the 28th this month until like the 3rd of august....
Soooooo... Maybe I can go with Quicksilver and Lefran to the meeting in London? And maybe I can bring my boyfriend too because he doesn't like me going somewhere all by myself meeting people I never met before?

This idea just popped into Tie and my head when he told me there would be a london meet the 30th of july...

I didn't talk this over with my boyfriend yet, so it's not really sure.
But anyways, since Quicksilver and LeFran live close to Cardiff (right?) I would like to meet up with you two anyway. And if you could just get Seanie/ Tie to go with you back from the London meet it would be nice too lol.

So, nothing's sure, but I'm so excited :P! ^^

Afternoon chaps and chapesses....

........just come back from the Constable exhibiton at the Tate Britain, some really cool stuff there so it is worth going to ! The six foot exhibition pieces are great because they have Constable's six foot 'sketches' :$ next to the originals. So you can compare the compositions when he made the sketches into final Academy pieces.

There are a few smaller pieces and sketches as well, but some paintings weren't there that would have been great pieces in this exhibition, but most of those are in American collections.......

yo. attention

right, right. since organization seems to be our weak point, and poor quicksilver seems to be doing all the arranging {thank you, darling}, i decided to see if i could cook up a site or something where updates on the UK front can regularly be posted, including all the meet arrangements, and so forth.

after talking to quicksilver on msn, the possibility of using an automated blogging engine such as mambo soon sounded like a good idea. but implementation would be tedious, and we wouldn't exactly know where to host it. so i just decided to make a LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com) community for ca, seeing as i already have an lj account.

ca uk livejournal community (http://community.livejournal.com/ca_uk/)

i'll try to keep it updated as often as possible when new information regarding meets and things comes about. the journal is open for anonymous commenting, and anyone can join if they already have an lj account. if you want to know the password to the journal, just ask me or quicksilver on msn {i'll give it to anyone who's been to a uk meet before}

i realise this is the millionth attempt at organizing this stuff, but it won't hurt to try again. the 3.0 group forum is dead, and, well, this is just in the alpha stage, but if it works, maybe we can keep it? tell me what you think.

How exactly do you want to decide the location? Is it possible to post a poll on LiveJournal and have people vote on it, or is it better to do that here in this thread?

livejournal is simplistic in its features, thus grand ideas like polls aren't really on. i don't suppose a poll would be practical anyway, because internet polls can easily be rigged if you really want to, by clearing your cookies or whatever. talking it out in this thread would probably be better.

i have to say, constable's exhibition looks rather good from the stuff on the site.. i reckon it gets my vote

Awesome job, Sean! :D [hugs]

Oooh I thought the Constable one was about £17, but it's not (£10), so I can go to both exhibitions. I think it would be easier to decide on an exhib. most people want to go to and meet up outside there.

One question, will it end up being like the last two food-wise? i.e. Starbucks > Pizza Hut > Nandos. Understandably we need larger areas/name places to munch 'cause there're so many of us going in one go, but surely there are other places?

sketchling
July 18th, 2006, 05:16 AM
nope. nandos is the way forward. Though perhaps the one on the south bank near tate modern is easiest. I have a free full chicken and chips i have been saving up for the next meet (all the koshime and me meets add up on a loyalty card!) so I can feed some people. It really is about as cheap as good sit-down food gets in central london.

sleep
July 18th, 2006, 05:50 AM
advantages of nandos
· cheap food
· tasty food
· sketchling has loyalty points
· cheating the system to get free drinks is too easy

disadvantages:
· we've done it a million times before.

i actually think one or two of the regular meet-goers should also get loyalty cards, so that whenever one of us is going to buy something at nandos, we get a loyalty point, and are one step closer to free food for a few people the next time we have a meet. we could fill up half a card or more, given the amount of people that eats at just one meet

Yeah...except the points are one per visit.. :P

I guess my biggest argument in favour of nandos is that once you have paid...they dont care. You have no bill to squabble over and the environment is far better than average for fast food. An added bonus is that most of ther stuff is wheat free and thats good for me :D But hey, I am but one individual. Anyone got a better idea, suggest away :) im game.

Besides, we are there to sketch, not wonder around tryin to find a place to eat. :P Done that too many times. Like hearding cats I tell you.

1/ Democracy is a no no....for groups mroe that 3, autocracy or dictatorship is the only way forward, for chaos often is teh result of herding a bunch of un-like opinioned people with differing ecclelastic tastse/desires/skills via the general consensus route 8grin*

You're forgetting the waitresses' beautiful eyes :)

First, Naomi, I'd say you can take the Rebels & Martyrs off the list. I saw it last week and other thanprobably three paintings, it's kinda crap. The first painting is by far the best, and worth seeing, but not worth the whole visit. I'm still keen for Kandinsky, but don't imagine many of ther est of you are. Kim, did you and Molly go in the end?

In terms of the LiveJournal site, my personal feeling is that 3.0 is easy enough to update that one thread with one comment per visit, which Naomi could be doing now. It keeps everything centralised and anyone who already has an account here doesn't need to do any more. Seriously no offence to Tie, who I'm sure has put some work in, but external linkage never really seems to work. If it does work, then goodo, but I've just seen it before..

Came back from the Glade festival with a few fairly psychedelic pages in my sketchbook. Haven't got my scanner just now (it's in storage) but as soon as I get it out, I'll scan about 20 page in. Must say, I'm not terribly pleased with what happened with my last man standing entry - the way Cody's put it beside somebody else's screws the colours up something fierce.

City project you say :) I must admit, I still have a soft spot for that old beast in my heart. Gotta say, I was pretty proud of myself for the whole Atlantean idea with the coral waterfall yada yada. Mighta made a good game, yknow? The thing it lacked was drive, though. And I guess I needed to be a bit fiercer as an art dierctor, given that I've got a background in Anthropology and could have provided more input into the artefacts I was after etc.

Hm. Ok, off home.

Koshime : Um.. What Belgium meet?
DC : I couldnt get hold of Molly :( But I went with Kweba and stu. I was not particularly impressed with kandinsky... some pics were gorgeous, but it was very abstract and experimental...which worked at the time as a revolution, but as plain just-to-look-at images... I got bored after a while.

Wish the gorillaz exhibition was still up or i would suggest that.

Ok, the tate britain isn't the greatest meeting place really. especially if most people will be waiting for an hour or two (people tend to drift in between ten and twelve). How do people feel about meeting somewhere in the city first, and then making the timing for tate at 1pm? The tate britain's near pimlico station, btw.

When I say town, I'd be thinking of somewhere like the starbucks at leicester square.

You're from Sydney? I went to Ashton's a few times, and told Form about it when I met him in Amsterdam. Then I spent two years convincing Rod to go :)

I don't think there's anywhere as good as that here, but there are a few decent sketch clubs. The one in Angel that I sometimes go to, Imery goes to every week, and Sketchling has been to a few times, is in Angel. It's £6 a throw and they have cheap paper and charcoal there. It's Mondays and Tuesdays, and as it doesn't require any commitment beyond paying for one night, is a great way to start if you're looking for something more formal. It's run by Candid Arts, who you can google, I'm sure :)

Naomi: No, there's just the one main one at the top of the square. The square's on a hill, so you'll see what I mean about the top :)

I'm not from Sydney, but I lived there for 3 years. And took 5 semesters at Ashtons (3 anatomy for the artist and 2 life drawing for beginners), well night of classes, unfortunatly work can intrude upon full time art pursute. I loved it, felt it was more beneficial to me and my skills than any other classes I'd taken, it was the right mix of directed observation and mostly drawing time. All under Briggsy, who I can not say enough good things about, so I won't even bother.
Thanks for the pointer, all the classes people I know here have taken have had a mix of responses and nothing has stood out as something I was after. The sketch club type of thing sould be just the ticket.

Hey all

Not sure if anyone is interested but a friend of mine is running a summer school in figurative drawing and sight size down here in Salisbury. He's a good painter and an even better instructor. I'll be along for 2-3 days a week drawing for nowt(we have a reciprocal arrangement of offering the chance to draw at each others classes free of charge:) )

heres the link for the classes:
http://www.sarumstudio.com/summerschool.html

and you can view some of his work here:
http://www.commissionaportrait.com/artistsportfolio.asp?id=184

The classes are not really suitable for beginners, you really need to have some experience with drawing from life. I'm not a fan of sightsize myself but it's a good system that many portrait painters use to ensure a sucessful representation of the subject. Worth a look.

Only realised after the fact that on his last course he had a coupla guys from the CA posse!. They turned out some great work.

The hybrid flux calculations of the implicit a-posteriori finite element method to compute lower and upper bounds to output of a partial differential equation or set of equations are improved.

Hows that DC!?;)

How about a procedure or working method topic. Give each other an insight into working porcesses, daily working routines, where we find inspiration, how we approach projects, our approach to drawing characters, enviro's ,what we are all working on currently etc.

For real interest came back home yesterday to discover that our gardener had assaulted our landlord. He first pushed him over and then in his words " he looked like a fat, bloated cow lolling around on the floor and i thought, oh i have to hit the bastard!!!!" Our soon to be ex landlord is incredibly rich by the way, think the gardener had had enough of his humungous workload for very little while the landlords pile of wealth constantly grows.

Hand wringing.....hand wringing....
why dont you ask the surgeon which one is a priority....(kid first kid first they say)

In fact, the less you have a qualification for medically related work, the better the candidate you are. Education is not required. If you achieve to reduce this deficit by 10 million, you will get a hefty bonus salary....

Why dont you ask the other staff.

Hmm,
what do you think anaesthetist...(hmm, those starved, ready and emergency first please... wait, they've just chewed some gum, that counts as having eaten...better starve them another 6 hours....)

Saved by the not eaten yet card

Our first client of the day. Right..I want you to count back from 1 to 10....everything is just fine, you'll just be going for a short nap. We'll look after you well. Everything will be jsut fine. you are in good hands.....

And the poisoning is underway. And a life is in our hands.
Its a good day to let the surgeon get the glory of it all.
Now where is that sudoku.....

NB: We call anaesthetics the poisoning.because the medications given are actually poisons to the body. So in essence they kil if given above the standard doses (standard doses beign derived from multiple drug trials, and tests on what will make a lamb, sheep or mice fall asleep and wake up without significant side effects) with nothing more than a nice short nap. Maybe in some cases, they may feel slightly sick, but otherwise...I've had my operation. really? or some recall having he best dreams ever...

Of course, a slight extra amount, or if the surgery did not go all to plan, then there was all we could do. At the end of any procedure, we reverse these poisons, we turn off the gasses, waft in the good ole gas of oxygen and air..natural to our bodies to wash it all out..and bring them back to life (so to speak)

So, its all really safe and good these days, and we are jsut victims of our progress in medical technology. Viva le drug

"Ja ne" is the Japanese equivalent to "buh-bye". :)

Chee: Hahahaha, awesome. Thanks for the fun read~

Kim: I've no idea! Howeveeerr, I do know where the saying to "kick the bucket" came from...

When people died, they were cleansed before being dressed nicely and placed in their coffins (buh, same as now, but we're talkin' 'bout the olden days :P). However, sometimes, even after death, some of the nerves are still active in the body, causing the deceased body to have the occasional spasm. When they did this, they often kicked the bucket of water which was used to clean them; thus, the saying to "kick the bucket" was born. :)

Another lil fact: It's said that the brain lives on for approximately 8-11 seconds after death. Niiiiiiiice :dead:

There's a book full of explanations to sayings like these but I can't find it. I saw it advertised a while ago at http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk

Yes, well done all. Koshime, brilliant post. Really interesting to see just how it is I've ended up sometimes waiting for hours and hours in A&E and sometimes been seen within minutes. Hell, if some old woman's dying, see her first!

In terms of workflow etc, I guess I'll contribute something about my sketchbook. Rules seem to work for people, so here's some sketchbook rules:

1.Experiment, experiment, experiment.
2.Finish everything.
3.Avoid Slavishness.

Ok, the explanations:

1.To me, a sketchbook is a place where your real strength lies. Your ability to evolve as an artist and to define your own style is the sum total of your experimentation to date. New media, new ways of looking at things are key. A sketchbook of finished art, all executed in the same style with the same media is a sign of a dead artist trying to impress somebody. This rule corresponds to rules one and two of the Painting rules ('you're not here to make pretty pictures' and 'everything you do is wrong.')

2.You don't really progress until you finish as many things as possible. Now, this doesn't mean 'open a page, start drawing something, finish it, then never touch that page again.' If you do this, you'll resort to the same technique to get you through it, and you won't experiment with different ideas, because they may end up in bad work. I work on many pages at once in my sketchbook, and often work on top of old drawings, making something cmopletely new. This has been a lot more frequent since I started working with paint media in my book, which is something I learnt from rule #1. So, don't be precious, feel free to go back and fix something, or make it into something totally different. But if you just scribble something then move on and never revisit it, you won't progress. So try and progress everything.

3.Don't use the Coro Technique. Don't use any technique. Experiment with them, use one for a while, but don't get stuck into one way of thinking. That's not you, that's a book. And anyone could learn it. So don't get locked into one way of thinking or working, cause that will kill your development. Also, try not to worry too much - the pages a lot of the guys I spoke to in Montreal really liked were the bad ones I wanted to get rid of. They were happy that someone was experimenting and trying to learn, and it didn't always come off. SO, show your flaws, and don't try to hide everything under a veneer of learned, acquired technique.

Right, that's that. Not as poetic as 'fuck you' but I dunno, hopefully someone benefits from this.

hehe, Naomi, you still learning Japanese? I stopped for ages, but started again last week. I could go to Japan right now and ask for something in a coffee shop, or ask when things are open and closed from...:)

btw, may not be coming to the meet after all, might be going to newquay instead. Just depends if I can be bothered to get up at 3 on friday and sleep in a tent all weekend. I'll let you know if I can't make it to the meet, but at the moment I am still coming.

....
errm, I do paint, but not in my sketchbook... I really hope i'm not dead as an artist :(..........But I definately should experiment more, I always tell myself to, but it never really happens

Uk response to Christian's growing apathy for the thread, lol.;)

I'm really humbled by Koshimes post, man thats a day!!!! All I have to worry about is getting up and provided i've not forgotten how to hold my drawing implement spend the whole day doing that. Kudos sir.

Well put DC, good advice. I use my sketchbbok as a visual journal. I'll record anything from people i see, objects or things that interest me down to ideas and thoughts for painting and concepts. Wouldnt say i normally experiment with new media in there though, tend to do most of my experimentation during my working day, finding new ways to solve the same old problems.

note, because of the lack of an apostrophe, it could be regarded that faith related christians in general have a growing apathy to concept art in UK.
I didnt set out to humble, but rather sketch out that the daily day (well from 0600 to noon) at the NHS is a mad slaughterhouse (green wing is funny to the point you realise, the damn things actually occur in real life, regularly on an almost daily basis and you dont know if its political to laugh or despair...)

I took Japanese for 2 years, apparantly I have an A* in it at GCSE level but I very much doubt it as my entire class got the same grade.

and put in your starting point (eg, probably Paddington for you welshies) and then put in 'WC2H 9NA' and change the option to 'postcode' for the destination. Then click on 'end map' when you've selected a journey and it'll tell you how to walk there.

The skillful huntsman is imo the best record of the concept art process that i have ever seen so far.

Some other good ones are the pixar books, the art of star wars books (ep2 has more trad ep3 has more digital), the art of discworld is worth a look, the art of halo is cool, then theres the lord of the rings books which are great, oh and the art of darkwatch. Meeting time was pushed back to 11am. If we get it over with quickly, we can probably get in for noon, just.
Chances are we'll just have to meet you all at the national gallery around 1pm.

Nice meeting you folks, was a fun day! Will have to do it again some time soon.
Cool to be able to put more faces to names, too.

Possibly some better planning needed next time to avoid the butch topless black men in denim briefs, though. Unless that's what floats your boat.

Asoir: You say more on the forums than you do in real life ;)

fran: Was really impressed with your sketchbook, I guess I haven't been checking the sketchbook forum enough recently, 'cos you're way better than I thought you were, for some reason! I need to get more sketching practise in, my sketchbooks are in a horrible state of disrepair at the moment.

Naomi: Next time we should endeavour to sit closer to the brass band and further from the ninja squirrels.

Adam: I'm guessing you post as "yAdam", right? Really nice work in your sketchbook, I'm humbled. How old are you?

Everyone else: Thanks for getting this all organised and showing up (where possible). Was nice meeting you all!

tie: Asoir was the tall, quiet one with dark hair who left when we were still in the park.

I was the one with the brown t-shirt and glasses, who commented on your hair and talked about university and studying art a bit.

Dan (Arcipello on the forums, www.artofconway.com ) is a colleague of mine, he was the one with the strong geordie accent.

Sorry man my brain isnt at all that retentive? Did you see my sketchbook and when and what one and who were you?! Oh, and why were you humbled?

I'm 20 years dead mate. And yeah my username is asgardian. (not for much longer hopefully)

I wish I could have seen the constable thing but it was my own fault really, had a really cool time it was great seeing everyone again aswell as the new faces. Hopefully the next wont be too far away.

I glanced at it when Danny and Dan (heh) were taking a look at it in Nando's. Your old sketchbook, I think. Still has some really nice stuff in, I particularly liked the thumbnail character designs.
Mainly humbled 'cos you're a year or so younger than me and way better at drawing/ideas etc. Same applies to Naomi, Fran, probably some other folks who were there and actually practise their art :)

no, MoP, i did come to nando's with you.. i was just simply saying that i too, am a quiet, tall, dark haired boy {hey that sort of sounds romantic}

err, yes, anyway. adam, the constable exhib. wasn't that much anyway. we had a quick look at it and i don't think it's his best work. that or he's not all he's cracked up to be? his draft pieces were a lot more energetic and alive than his final finished pieces.

Hey guys, Daniel here (the guy that turned up with MoP) my first ever conceptart meet yesterday was suprisingly cool:D Ive never seen so many skethbook freaks in my life!
Its been too long since i kept a sketch book but after seeing all your work i think i might start to take my sketch books more seriously:)

and yes we need to see photos from yesterday so that we can place names above the heads etc, although im quickly learning who is who, tie ,Asgardian, molly, Danny etc etc i can pretty much put the names to the face.

theres one or two sketch books scans on my site, hopefully im going to change that over time!
