If everyone who is going to the italy workshop takes someone in their luggage, then twice as many of us can go.
I know, my ability at maths even scares me at time.

Heeeeeeey guys guys guys! Isn't the Italy workshop in Rome? Via BA, return flights to Rome are only £55 :) Defo affordable.
How much do hostels usually cost for a week? 'Cause I wanna stay there for longer than the 4 days of the WS 'cause it'd be stingey otherwise, hehe.
Alcian: There's nothing wrong with meeting people from the 'net if you get along with them. We're all cool here, and the UK meets are great :) You should stop by sometime, dude.
Dan: ......Weh? (:P)

I thought it was florence, I can't remember where i read that. A return to florence is about £120-£150,gawd.
I want to make a meet, Im ''staying'' in london anyway over august if my summer plans workout so that'll makes things easier if there's a meet then.

Time to say goodbye!!
See you in ROME!!!
Rome has loads of museums and the like, so I guess it'd make sense. Plus it's easier to get there directly, unlike Florence. I've never been anywhere in Europe so I don't mind anyway. <-----wants to buy a leather bag in Italy. Thye're bound to be cheaper there. One of the girls in high school had a stunning one but she got it from Greece. Grrrrrr...

Hi Guys :D
I know I've not posted here for a while, but I'm gonna be in and around London between the 25th-29th of June (our college has a stand at the DandAD Show)
I just wondered if there's any plans for a London Meet around that time? Or if any of the students here are gonna be at the DandAD show too?
Quicksilver
June 6th, 2006, 06:15 PM
What's DandAD? ^_^'
So far we haven't planned anything since a few of the regs are whisking off to Montreal for the workshop. 25th and 26th are birthday dates for me (sis's fiancé and my bro) so I probably can't make those dates.
Dunno, is anyone up for a London meet? If so then I'll prolly only go for the day as cash is looking a bit tight atm. Otherwise, there should be a Cardiff meet later this summer. :P
Also, is anyone still interested in going somplace further up and rural for a drawing session with nature? 'Cause my other sis's fiancé offered to hire a minibus and take us so long as we chip in for the hiring fee (about £5 each if 17 of us go). Give us a shout if you'd like to go, and if you have any places to suggest that'd be cool.

That would be so cool if I could afford it. :nohope: Looks like I might have to get a new PC 'cause my bro hasn't a clue what the hell went on with mine, and he knows his stuff. o_O So apparently it'll cost roughly £400 to buy parts for him to build a new one for me. Kinda trying to save more than that for the workshop...
Fran: Yay! The results day is on 17th Aug, btw. I asked Carys the other day. Dunno about the weather, soz. Hope it stays like this 'cause I'll be going to the beach on Monday again! ^_____^ Shame I can't make your BBQ. I'll hand ya your pressie the next time I see you.

I'm guessing the ws fee is between £250-£300 (ouch), flights vary depending on when you're flying (let's say anything up to £200) and I haven't a clue what the prices are like for food and hostels there. Do we cook our own stuff or will we be eating out all the time? 'Cause I can't go out without having breakfast!

Hostels usually provide breakfast and dinners, although usually at an added price and theyre a bit shit...
Eating and drinking out in Rome tend to be a little bit pricey in some areas (over 5 quid for a glass of coke once >:| ) but that was by the Spanish steps... If I go Im going to spend all my drink money on Italian ice cream, god its good stuff.
Shame its not Florence, its a lot cheaper and the Duomo is the most beautiful building ever made...

@ Quicksilver: (Soz, for the slow reply :D )
DandAD is some kind of graduate showcase exhibition, most of the colleges in the country will have a stand there. Although, I've only discovered recently that it's more geared towards advertising and graphics, than concept art and illustration.
Hope that helps?

Rome is not certain, Jason has said himself, they keep talking about Italy, but so soon after this one i don't think they'll be in a huge rush. I think we should chill about the workshop untill it's a bit closer to being announced.
James does always go on about meets, speaking of which, me and him met up with Lorenzo last week, from studio blink twice, they have a thread in finally finished. Really nice guy, i think i might have to have a go at comics after that.

I'd love a proper UK workshop...If not organised by MB, then the folks from this here UK forum. We tried last year, and it went ok...but I'd like a proper one, wher we gets SummerPud, Matt Dixon, Posh, Duddle, Sketchling and so man more to demo and critique work. Theres so much bloody talent here...
Seriously. The CA.org/MB workshop will never come to the UK because its so expensive here. So, I thinks WE should talk/ discuss it here.
DC, Sketchling and myself have spoken about this ENOUGH times, so it is really an idea that needs fruition...

It would be great to have a Uk workshop! How did it go last time? How was it organised, and how much did it cost? Also, what kind of scale are we talking about here? Would it only be Uk people or open to anyone? Not saying it shouldn't, but it would have to be 2 or 3 days for it to be worth people making the trip....or maybe people would come for a day..
Would having it either in the next few months, before the next MB workshop, or after, maybe at the start of 2007 (?) be best because of everyone going to the MB workshop...?
Just throwing out some questions :)

No other bull shit. UK all the way.
C'mon. IMO we dont need the rockstar shit. We are English as English can be. Our skill and personality show for more than anything else.
Its been preying on our minds for ages. And, Well. I dont think we need any outside help. We have the contacts right here. In front of us as we speak.
I'd have the w/s up nerth somewhere. THats my opinion. As for enviro's, Kim and Kian have dibs on that. Characters etc Spud, Matt, Duds, Posh DC; vehicles: Koshime, Warhead, Weird shit: Eri, Badger DC, myself ...
LOOK. Theres plenty of us fuckers to pull this off. We're or I'M NOT asking for pros only. I'm asking for people to volunteer their time to demo the work THEY have done, and whatever else maybe useful to us. Half you lot are working in the industry in SOme way, many you lot do this in ur spare time.
Please dont think this is a rant. Well. Yeah ok it is, but SummerPud - you'd like to demo more and give ur side of shit eh? Kim - you have the skills and knowledge; DC lets go on the other side, the more abstract trippy shit;
None of this licky arse crap. Proper sit down demo out and get feed back shit. Our way. UK-styleee.
It annoys the hell outta me, that theres this 'clique' within CA.org - c'mon, you know so!- because all the talent thats out there, is in HERE. We dont need all that bull shit. I want ALL your thoughts, your ideas

Ok guys and girls. Just a reminder to keep everything grounded. I know you all know this, but there's so much that would go into the planning, organisation and execution of a workshop. We'd have to get some kinda of idea of a target market, schools? Uni's?, and make sure that they would cover the cost comfortably.
Also, don't forget, the big gun's are usually very busy people. Matt, Aly, Dudd's, Pete, work their asses off all week.
There has to be a main organiser. Maybe contact Layil and Jason for some tips on what it would take. We're obviously not going to their level. But I think it would foolish not to ask them for help.
This is a discussion that will last for a while.

...and remember that being 'pro' doesn't necessarily make someone a confident, capable or enthusiastic teacher; that's a very particular skill in it's own right and I'm not sure if there's much to learn from simply watching someone paint unless they fully understand their own process and have the ability to articulate it clearly. That counts me out for a start.
Kian's absolutely right. I imagine this sort of thing could easily turn into a weekender if it wasn't properly organised and scheduled.

yeah, MATT has a very very good point. I found it very hard to articulate what I was doing when I painted...partly because I constantly change how I paint, partly cause I tend to do simple painting and every technical photo manip trick in photoshop I can in alternating breaths. Without much structure. :D BUT, Even if the artist dosnt say anything ( yeah, whatever!) There is always something to learn from it... and certainly much inspiration to be gained from it.
From my experience its more about meeting and talking to people. The social aspect with sketchbooks has always been the best factor for me.
Besides, the last time a group decided to do there own autonamous sponsored workshops like this that I am aware of...the ringleader was BANNED from CA.org for it. Guy from sweden. Jason just banned him straight. Guess it makes business sence as they have their own workshops, but it still sucks.
I recon something thats social, about exchanging ideas and some demo/discussions. Nothing tooooooo teacher/pupil. I just would love the chance to meet some a the guys up country!

I can recommend it to my uni in Hull, Im sure theyd be up for the publicity.
We're having our entire building remade and should have access to plenty of materials as noone ever freaking uses it. Also there are a couple of cheap hotels around the city which'll be empty cos noone wants to come to hull. Not only that but its a short train journey out into the country plus theres some really interesting buildings in the city itself.
The only problem is that itd have to be around about october...and its in Hull

June 13th, 2006, 07:08 AM
errr. I used to live in sheffield/ doncaster and hull for 7 years whilst as a doctor in training. Wild horses coudlnt elicit me to travel up to hull again....maybe its the grey decor of the esturary and the over run chav towns of Bransholme, Sutton and the next to dead fair grounds town of Grimsby....
And in my next act, i might probably insult all thegood folk living between midlands and yorkshire but.... in terms of natural rural beauty vs chavlism over run towns
Perhaps a middle ground town like Medevial Chester or York or the rural far out towns of Linconshire....the fact is the North unless you go further than Sheffield/Leeds is pretty much chavlite and ex mining towns, the midlands itself has nothing much in terms of outdoors beauty...whereas if you head diagonally for example , north West - Buxton (beautiful rural village/town/countryside park), North East (linconshire), Cumbria, Edinburgh and the Glens above, or far south West, to Lands end in Tintagel, Devon, North Wales, Cornwall or South East in Kent,Surrey

I think , taking a middle groudn appraoch we'd probably want to make this a Social Exchange and Joint Exploratory Arts commune (i.e not quite a workshop, but more than a meet with access to conference facilities, whilst still sitting out in a pub, shopping mall, country stall or beachside) get together to stimulate a vibrant cooking pot of talent in places we've not been or explored before

Depends on what everyone wants to do. I run my classes at two venues in salisbury down in wiltshire. If you wanted to do a little life drawing initially and then head out to do some location drawing?. There are a ton of pubs in the area, some nice ones out in the country, then there are places like the cathedral, avebury stones, stonehenge(little dull). Several castles around about, an open air sculpture park, some gorgeous landscapes in the wyle valley and cranbourne chase.Oxford would be sweet, bath a good venue too. Any of that sound ok? the souths got a helluva lot to offer, but york sounds cool. Devon or cornwall would be ace too, exmoor and dartmoor. Maybe we could pop in and say hi to alan lee!;)
We could check in advance with local art groups for models working in the area and sort out a venue to do some drawing.

Im wondering how a uni would kinda react to the idea of having a meet/workshop there - im sure they would want something out of it. Considering the way they have gone with uni societies now - they want everything on paper and money.
I was thinking about surrey uni - but apparently they are shrinking their art department.
Although London is curreently not a hot idea - it does have a load of parks, monuments, architecture and free museums and galleries. Who knows - maybe an after hours sketching session could be organised with one of them. Just encourage everyone to take their own lunch. :P

oxford would be great. especially for those who like environments. there are loads of architectural gems there, and then the countryside around oxford is immense, and i could do some research into models there. i used to get life drawing at school so i could find out where they were from and my mum used to organise life drawing a few years ago so i could talk to her too.
thinking about uni's oxford uni itself might be helpful although i doubt it, oxford brookes would probably be better to approach and there's oxford and cherwell college which might be a good source of people/venues etc.
just throwing it out there. i know the positioning isnt great for the people up north.

...the fact is the North unless you go further than Sheffield/Leeds is pretty much chavlite and ex mining towns, the midlands itself has nothing much in terms of outdoors beauty...
Arsehole.
Acknowledging the fact that people living in those parts of the world might be mildly offended by that line hardly excuses such a gigantic and, crucially, completely erroneous generalisation.
Apart from anything else, surely the 'outdoors' is implicitly beautiful? There's just as much inspiration to be found in an industrial landscape as there is in any of our national parks. Exactly where you go shouldn't matter a shit.

Yeah i agree with accessability, but if you think about it theres the huge train station in llanfairpwllgwyn blah blah, there are towns like caernafon motorways etc, and there are local buses that go to villages. Naomi also suggested her sister's fiance would drive a mini bus. Train to newport- all get on mini bus? well its a suggestion

Ok so my first post went down with the uni network, so i'll have to type it again, if it doesn't have the same amount of tact, i'm sorry.
Jon I don't think we are talking a big open workshop, merely a CA gathering like last time, and to be honest i learnt a lot from last time. Also this would take pressure off the instructors. More of a community thing, with a bit of money for the life models. I could be wrong though.
Matt Dixon of doom and associated cottages Though your point is completely true in many respects i disagree on a the point that not much can be learnt from simply watching. I learnt a lot from HPX and Alexsi, who barely spoke in their demos, they simply created. Seeing their techniques and the processes that go into creating art work so efficiently. Same can easily be said for coro's gun workshop, which i'm sure the rest of the prague crowd would agree. A similar break through to when the minute mile was achieved, i saw it could be done.
I think this is going to be a london effort as we know each other and are quite comfortable to say 'get out of bed you lazy arse' to each other.

A post by fred flickstone of links to one of his teachers tutorials, with the second post being a response from spooge demon saying everyone should be able to recite the tutorial by heart(apparently spooge was taught by vilppu as well?!). Anyone not know spooge demon's real name?* Well here is the link... its rather good. Focussed on animation, but nobody creates characters with emotion from life like an animator. or spooge. READ IT. Curious Kian, you dont happen to be at the Art College in huddersfield are ya. Good illustration stuff from the mentor who managed to present all the portfolios in a professional style!

erm not the art college no, the university considers transport design in the "creative technologies". As a result, the illustration and presentation of ideas so far has been incredibly sub par. Its something that honestly, angers me. When I started the course I was already better at rendering than the guy "teaching". Also already better than him at 3dsmax! Thing about it is, this guy graduated just last year and got a 2.1. Which tells me my creativity has a chance of not even scraping its potential. I'm truly having to grit my teeth at the mo. Doesn't help that I've been offered a permanent position at a studio. My head's a bin right now. Uber confused

Heh, same boat. I'm on a 4-year "Computer Arts" degree up in Dundee, and I'm pretty sure I have a better idea of what's going on in the current "computer arts" industry than 90% of the teachers. They seem to live under rocks for the most part.
Even if you've been offered a job at a studio now, I wouldn't bother going for it. Having a degree in a couple of years will be more worth it in the long run than jumping ship now and starting at a place which might not turn out that well (although you never know).
For example in 1st year here, I went to work for a company as a 3d artist for 3 months over the summer, when university was about to start again they offered me the chance to stay on instead, which was tempting, but then not 2 years later, the studio went bust. Didn't seem like it was going that way at the time I was there, either. Just sayin' ;)
As it turns out, I'm jumping out now (after 3 years) with a BA... if I stayed another year I'd end up with a BA(Hons) but IMHO it's just not worth the time, expense and frustration... anyway, I wanna be out there working on real projects, not paying other people to tell me what to do. Especially when the stuff they tell me to do is 90% likely to be useless in the real world.
Oh, and yeah, UK CA.org meet soon sounds good! I might even be able to make it this time, whenever it is... now that I have no real commitments for the next little while :)

Hello everyone. Still in Montreal, heading to New York tomorrow.
I don't have time to go through absolutely everything in here, but it does seem as though you're all in a bit of a hurry to sort things out. These things are serious and take time, and get sorted out by one or two people taking it seriously and sorting things out. In the past, I organised the first mini workshop (most of you weren't around then) and Molly organised the second. The truth is, the democratic nature of this thread may make it less than ideal unless somebody takes the bull by the horns and looks into it.
My personal feeling is that the Midlands is a great idea, as it's literally the middle of the country and therefore the most accessible, as opposed to a place which is physically far from nearly everywhere. Also, most of our local professionals live in that area, and frankly I'd love to meet Matt, Duddlebug, Posh etc and see old friends like RES again. Even after i WASTE him in the Tdome ;)
With that in mind, is there actually anyone in the Midlands who knows of a likely venue? I guess we'd want it for a weekend in early August.

Hey sketchling, thanks for the link. Remember seeing a couple of those online a while ago and deciding to pick up a copy of the drawing manual. Needless to say it never happened, but your post reminded how much of an important part of any artist's book collection it actually is. So decided to get one. Went to the Vilppu studio and tried to order it online but there was some issue with addresses not correseponding! So i sent an e-mail and lo and behold get a reply from Glenn himself. The next thing i know im calling america and chatting with the man himself at home on the phone. Surreal but greaty rewarding.
I agree with DC, this thing is gonna take cracker jack timing wang, and its probably best if one or two people take the lead. Imagine it should be folks from the relevent part of the country.
On a side not, just having a studio built either in timber or concrete. Two large north facing skylights for portrait and figure work. If anybody is ever down our way we could sort out a model and work on some painting. Probably fit 4-5 in the painting studio and then we have our computer studio housing 2 g5 macs and a pc. Just a thought but i wouldnt have thought it will be fully funtioning till jan next year.

There seems to be a pattern emerging in poor art courses across the country. Im currently doing a BA(Hons) in Games Design and my 'lecturer' didn't know that Nintendo was making another console because he "...doesn't play Nintendo".
Not only that but we haven't been taught anything about creative process or techniques purely being told how to code in Flash and Director, the latter of which isnt used in the industry and is already being phased out of production. If I wanted to code Id have taken a programming course.
Went to the third year degree show and the quality of work is absolutely apalling, I don't feel Ive improved in anyway and I am considering spending another ton of money on another course after Ive finished because I don't feel confident in my skills yet to get a job in the industry.
I've learnt more from these forums in the few months I've been on these forums than the 2 years I've spent at uni. Stay strong fellow students you're not alone :P

Christ. Sadly this doesn't shock me. I went to Swindon college's end of year show just to see if the students were receiving better tuition than when I was there (for you new people, Swindon doesn't believe in illustrators using computers!) and not much had changed.
A BA graphics student had chosen an ad campaign fo Budweiser as his final project. Not only did he use the same slogan as the existing campaign, his choice of font was the industry's most reviled "Comic Sans MS"!

Well, despite most art based couses being totally rubbish in my opinion going to uni is great, and for about 6 months after I finished I missed it quite a lot. Although now its distant memory even though its only been a year. However bad you tutors might be or however bad the course is, remember that you have the time to figure out what you want to do.. I did computer animation and was pretty sick of it by the third year, and one of my tutors told me about these forums! So if it wasnt for uni I might have never come here, so i'm glad of that.
I dont know what I would do now if I was back at the end of sixth form, but if I knew about conceptart and if I knew how much i'd learn from these forums then staying at home for 3 years, working at my own pace, and ending up with no degree, but better skills, and no debt would have definately been an option for me.
Then again, uni was FUN, and the only thing I really regret is being lazy in the 2nd year..So I rekon, if you choose a course you want, that may not be hard, you still get a decent degree, have time to work on your art, and also have a great time...and then when you're making loadsa money you can easily pay off the debt:)

Well. My 2 cents are University give you
1/ important base to develop contacts...contacts ...contacts
2/ time to develop your talents without pressure of work deadlines (which make not be so creative but more menial/client specific in the sense. your client has a specific idea, specific look which can be good/bad)
3/ learn in different areas other than the one you aspire
4/ develop you database of colleagues/friends that might stick with you for your working life
5/ enjoy youth
Hybridstar

I echo Koshime's last post. To be perfectly honest unless you study under a teacher/instructor who's work you really admire chances are you wont learn a great deal at uni. Reason why is that if youre keen enough you would have started asking and going about answering the right questions yourself. One thing you will get is time to develop, access to facilities that would otherwise be closed to you and the real gem, learning alongside and from your peers. Contacts made at uni can stand you in good stead, contacts made in the industry, hell even better.

My course is a bit sucky at uni, but most illustration courses are when you wanna do concept art and they keep chucking avant gardism at you trying to get you to experiment with 'mixed media'.
But i wouldn't give uni up for the world.
Its an easy introduction to learning to live away from home.
You get a nice big loan.
You meet so many cool people.
You get the space and time to practise and perfect your art.
You .....well i could go on forever to be honest, it rocks even if your course isnt perfect you have loads of time to do your own stuff.
oh and you can get utterly wankered and sleep in the whole day after.
for those that like that kinda thing.

Yeah...when I went to varsity, I got frustrated as hell not learning the technical how-to-draw properly and stuff... BUT and this is a big but, I did learn how to think beyond the clishe'd ideas and the hacked concepts. Conceptart will teach ya the technical, thats for sure, but there is SO MUCH clishe'd artwork that doesnt even TRY to break any barriers of origionality.
Mixed media might be a pain, painting newspapers white and drawin dotted lines to represent the conceptual path of a girl comitting suicuide or whatever depressing angsty subject is in vogue with the lecturer... BUT, what would happen if you tried to USE that in concept art? Using mixed media to create a character... stick down newspapers on violence and paint a cute child character with a slight grin... It will tell you a lot about him/her. Charcoal, stick and ink, all that stuff would be GREAT to do characters and environs in. (if yer lucky enough to have the space!!)
What im saying is that it might not be what ya wanna learn, but Uni often has far subtler lessons to teach. Take that boring crap and find a way to use it to improve yer concept art and illustration. (I just wanna get some charcoal now... sigh. need a biger room!)
edit: Think of it as a great chance to have the TIME to learn by yerself. and the people around you to learn with. Enjoy ythe time and learn off conceptart :D I wish id had it!!!!!!

Tuesday night and thursday nights are regular 10 weeks on 3 weeks off. 2 hour sessions, 7-9pm, every two months were planning on a full day saturday figure class and we run workshops throughout the year. Next one is landscape painting in watercolor and gouache, i think. Terms about to end on the evening classes, but you'd probably be more interested in the full day sessions. Just ran a weekend session with tuition and it was tough, 15 people of varying abilities!!!. The future figure weekends will propbably be untutored and tailored more towards intermediate/professional artists who just want access to a model.
Also if youre interested a friend of mine will be running a summer school in the vein of the lavender hill studios classes. Also in salisbury, sight size method. Worth trying but i wouldnt stick with it, a little too rigid for my liking. Here a link to his site. www.sarumstudio.com

Absolutely. Point 2 was one thing that I took away from Swindon. I've NEVER missed a professional deadline because I had enough experience of underestimating them in Uni!
Point 1 is something I should've taken into account though, you need to go somewhere that will get you contacts. It will make things MUCH easier than developing them yourself. Not that it's impossible though, it just takes more work.
Speaking of making contacts, I've just had another batch of my amazing Skull-Kidd card size fridge magnets made, if anyone wants one just email or pm me your address and I'll send you one in the post.

hehe, we get it in tennis too..except henman always looses...But, even though we should easily beat a team like trinidad and tobago, the whole point of the world cup is that the best countries play.. Theres a lot of qualifying matches, so any team thats made it to the last 32 is probably pretty good at football.
Also, I don't know what it is, but I find it really strange about how everyone gets excited by football.. Its great to watch, especially the world cup, but even matches in the premiership are quite good...I don't and never have supported a particular team, but I know people who have and its really weird to see how angry/upset they get if their team does shit...(I do support england btw, but that doesnt really count :))

Hey guys! I hate to just jump right in here, but I wanted to say hi. Naomi said I should stop by. I'm not a brit by birth(I'm an american but I'm not too crazy [I hope]), but last October I married a brit and moved to Cheltenham, which is a very pretty spa town if you've never been here.
By the way my name's Darylynn or just Dary for short, (lots of people think my name is really Cercie, I've been using it as a handle for more than 10 years so it's so much a part of me as my real name.)
I'd love to go to the next meet. And the bigger gathering sounds great, I'd be all for it if my husband Phill can tag along (he's not an artist, but I love him anyway). I don't have a lot of transportation as I'm dirt poor and can't drive so that kinda kills casual london meets for me, though I'm sure I can work something out.
I like the camaraderie in here, you all seem like good friends.
I hope you all won't mind an american's talk about uni. I'm still techinically a student, though I've taken a year off to move here and live with Phill. Going back to uni in Oregon in September. I think I've learned so much here in the last 3 months about the kind of art that I want to make compared to 4 craptastic years in an art department that wants everyone to paint unintelligable messes or found object art like a bed in a gallery with some projector playing a film on the sheets representing some girls repressed sexuality or some other garbage. I guess art school is what you put into it and up until now I haven't been trying too hard, but I've got one year left for my BA and plan to take things I've learned here and flesh them out in school.
So that's a bit about me, hope I didn't go on too long and you're still paying attention.
As for football I couldn't really care less. Go England, that's all the excitement I've got.
Oh hey, I updated my sketchbook today(yesterday, i'm still awake somehow) *points to link below* -Hint hint- was that subtle enough?

Hi Cercie/Dary. I've chatted to ya on the ol javachat right? Well, heres a big bloody welcome from the UK :) It'd be great for you to come to a future meet. Theres supposed to be a big one soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Sup kids, guess i should break my silence on the University front as i'm actually there. It's great, as cercie says it's what you put into it. It's as much about the place and the people as it is the course, there are guys on my course who do some very, very good stuff, a girl in her 3rd year won the macmillan publising prize. It's not concept art being produced though, it's very much an illustration course with a strong onus on traditional skills. At my foundation i specialised in fine art, illustration and photography, so i love the openess of my course. I get colour theory lessons, i get the option to spend all day in the life room with 2 models, but also you are taught not to narrow down your ideas untill you have looked down all the avenues, last week i had to draw 100 holes, try it, it's harder than you think.
There are a lot of good courses, research well and figure out where you wana go and how expensive places are, the less expensive the more money you have to spend on your own things. There is more to Britain than london.
The downside of football is a small price to pay for this weird spot of nation unity, it's all a little bit more friendly and i for one can't complain. If you really don't like it, go shopping, i bet there is a significant lack of crowds when england play, so it's win win.
Cercie Welcome! madness is almost a prerequisite.
Right everyone, i'm leaving the city and returning to the shire tomorrow, i will then be back with my car and have transport if anything is going on london-wise or anywhere. Jon, we need to do some drinking.
Um... Rant over?

You'll laugh but I think the Badgers from Weebl's Stuff (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/badgers)was the beginning of the cement of our relationship.
Thanks for the welcome Kian, we did chat in the irc channel, you should jump back in there more often.

Will there be a London meet this summer as well as a Cardiff one? I can defo afford the Cardiff one - maaaybe scrape the London one. It wouln't be too bad if I only went for the day since hardly anyone makes it for the following day anyway.
Whoa, Peel just popped up on my playlist. Haven't heard it since the TD...

Also, looks like I'll be down in London for good as of next month, I just got a job as an environment artist at Splash Damage (http://www.splashdamage.com) ... they're in Bromley, but that means I should have pretty easy access to London proper, which is nice.
Considerably easier than getting there from Dundee, anyway :)

lefran: Give Bridgman a shot. Constructive Anatomy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0486211045/qid=1150501415/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl/202-0355525-8085454) is good, as is The Human Machine (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0486227073/qid=1150501415/sr=8-8/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i8_xgl/202-0355525-8085454).
If you're feeling nostalgic and spendy, check out eBay to see if they have any copies of Loomis' "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth".
I heard Hale (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0823002977/sr=1-1/qid=1150501536/ref=sr_1_1/202-0355525-8085454?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books&v=glance) was good too...

Could go through it together or something if you want. I also have Anatomy for the Artist by Sarah Simblet if you wanna flick through that (it's the same one Lou has).

small recap
037: 19 fouls in the first 36 minutes and it's been competitive, which you would expect. Australia are making life tough for Italy and it's very much all to play for.
46: HALF TIME: 0-0Schwarzer made one great stop from wasteful Italy striker Toni but Australia are holding their own.
50: RED CARD A straight red card for Materazzi as he brings down Bresciano. It was a bad tackle but never a red card.
51: It was harsh, no doubt about it but Italy are down to ten men and we have a real game on our hands here. Materazzi's tackle was cynical but he was clearly not the last man. Bresciano has whipped the free kick wide but Italy need all their traditional resolve now.
58: Chipperfield finds space inside the box but his effort is beaten away by Buffon, the crowd are getting behind the Aussies. They're starting to believe they can pull this off.
74: All three starting strikers have been substituted for Italy as Totti comes on for Del Piero.
84: Bresciano curls an effort over the bar from outside the box. It's looking increasingly like it's going to go to extra time in Kaiserslautern.
90: Australia appeal for a handball after Aloisi misses an overhead kick. It comes off Zambrotta's chest really so the ref is right not to give anything.
91: Zambrotta's been booked. Italy are waiting for the final whistle. Six bookings, one sending off so far.
PENALTY! Italy have won a late penalty as Zambrotta has fallen under Grosso's challenge.
94: GOAL! Totti steps up for Italy with the pressure on and scores! Italy are going through!
95: Totti kept his cool to blast the ball wide of Schwarzer and end Australia's hopes. It was perhaps a debatable penalty, it took a brave decision from Cantalejo to give it in injury time.

Hello!
Yes, I'm definitely back. I haven't moved flat today as I was supposed to, cause it turns out the landlord doesn't technically own the sodding property yet!! GAGH!!
Now, my phone hasn't arrived yet, and my landline's been disconnected. So I'm kinda cut off from the world :(
Anyone in London watching the england match anywhere??

Welcome back christian, people have been waiting on your return to sort out a meet. Im well up for one, sketchbook will be packed and primed. Been doing an inordianate amount of teaching lately but at 30 quid an hour i cant complain. Just want to get down to some personal work again and i guess a sketch session with the uk posse is a good place to start. Cardiff might be a bit outta the question but we shall see.

Whoa, I can actually do this Sunday!
I'm getting the train down to Bromley on Saturday, so I should be available on Sunday at some point... where is this Constable exhibit? And I won't have any paints, but I can bring a sketchbook...
I've never really gone round London before, so I'm liable to get really lost unless someone helps me out :)
I can get to London Bridge tube station very easily, if anyone can direct me from there, I'll try my best to make it! :o

How many people usually meet up anyway?
Quicksilver
July 3rd, 2006, 09:15 PM
In the big ol' London meets there are usually about 12+ people, some come and go. That involves a week or more notice though so people can sort out their money and book tickets.

John Constable: Great Landscapes - Tate Britain
June- 29th August 2006
I do not consider myself at work without I am before a
six-foot canvas
– Constable to John Fisher, 1821
This major exhibition offers the first opportunity to view John Constable's seminal six-foot exhibition canvases together. The 'six-footers' are among the best-known images in British art and comprise the famous series of views on the river Stour, which includes The Hay Wain 1820–1, as well as more expressive later works such as Hadleigh Castle 1829 and Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows 1831. These paintings lie at the very heart of Constable's achievement and not even in the artist's lifetime were they ever brought together
Constable's decision to start painting six-foot landscapes around 1818–9 marks a significant turning point in his career. He was determined to paint on a larger scale (about six foot by four and a half) both to attract more notice at the Royal Academy exhibitions but also, it seems, to project his ideas about landscape on a scale more in keeping with the achievements of classical landscape painting.
As important as the six-footers themselves was Constable's decision to paint related full-scale preliminary sketches for most of them. These large sketches, with their free and vigorous brushwork were unprecedented at the time and they continue to fascinate artists, scholars and the general public. It has been said that it is this practice more than any other aspect of Constable's work which establishes him as an avant-garde painter, resolved to re-think the demands of his art and to address them in an entirely new way. The exhibition re-unites the full-scale sketches with their corresponding finished pictures in order to explore their role in Constable's working practice.
The exhibition includes nine such pairings and some sixty-five works in total. Highlights will include the bringing together of the six river Stour pictures for the first time, allowing the visitor to appreciate how, as the series progresses, Constable succeeds in developing a single thematic concept – the life of the Suffolk river he had known since boyhood – and gradually invests it with a greater sense of drama, heroic action and narrative weight.
The exhibition is curated by Anne Lyles and Rachel Tant, together with Franklin Kelly at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. It will travel to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in the autumn of 2006 before opening at the Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, in early 2007. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by Tate Publishing.

I'm free that weekend, AFAIK. Meaning the weekend of the 29th and 30th. I'd also like to try and see the Kandinsky exhibit at the Tate Modern at some stage, though I accept I may be alone in that :) Also there's an exhibition starting at the National Gallery called Rebels & Martyrs which looks to include some pretty awesome talent: http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/exhibitions/rebels_martyrs/default.htm
I realise this is three things, and I don't expect everyone to be interested in all of them, but my personal preference would probably be for the Rebels one above Sargent. But totally willing to bend with the breeze if people wanna go 'oooh' over Sargent's brush strokes :D
So how about that weekend? The 29th and 30th? And does a Sat or Sunday suit people better?
In terms of a bigger workshoppy type meet, I think we're best waiting till the summer has exhausted itself a little. People make a lot of plans in July and August..

Sargent is awesome, "the" master of tone. His brushsrokes are ok but apparently laboured. He scraped back many times and repainted to get the best mark. If youre interested in figurative art it's sargent or zorn and a close 3rd, elvgren. I'm in for either date.

*checks cash* yeah iv got some of my student overdraft leftover. Should be able to go. Sargent is a particular fave of mine, love the heavy contrast between light and dark in some of his early stuff. I cant remember off the top of my head what the paintings called but theres an absolutely stunning portrait of a woman where hes able to paint flesh under thin lace beautifully.

I should be able to make it anywhere on the 29th and 30th of this month. AFAIK there's no business that gets in the way of my being there!

July 4th, 2006, 09:25 AM
yeah i dont think he likes me as it is, i speak my mind about how shit he is. well not in so few words, but if i come across a problem because of his incompetance ill let him know haha. like he promised to put the rotas up 2 weeks in advance and soon after it went down to them being put up the saturday before the sunday i might have to have worked, so if i cant make it to work on a sunday if hes by off chance contracted me because i have something ihave to attend, im not gonna apologise ! also he took all of our till authority numbers off us without telling us, then said he would put mine back up then didnt! which i told him! grrr i just dont like work its so bad there.
they still dont know that ive been off college for weeks now because if they did know they would contract me every day of the week and theres no chance im doing that. i would quit if i didnt need the money. no one who works there likes it because of how bad it is

Oohh yeah, I got a place in Foundation. ^___^ Figures I didn't need an interview or anything since I'm already a student there (was up 'til 2-3am sorting out my portfolio and personal statement, grrr) and surprisingly the Head of Art was impressed with my work. Also heard one of the staff members have been printing off the stuff from my site. Wtf? o.O

oooh Constable, I once saw a guide talk for about 20 minutes infront of one of his paintings, the like books in paint. All those exhibitions sound good. Just came back from the Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Museum, I was pretty reluctant to go in a see all the "modern art", but I was blown away, some powerful stuff.
Me and a few friends might be interested in coming down.
Well played on the foundation naomi,
"was up 'til 2-3am sorting out my portfolio " is something you might be saying pretty regularly in the foundation year. I'm sure it will be a great year though

Me and Fran are thinking about taking the Megabus to get to London. I'm not entirely sure how, but they do really cheap bus travels round the UK (and America).
http://www.megabus.com/uk/
So for us to get from Cardiff to London and back (29th-30th Jul) would cost £15.50 instead of £20-£30. Just an example/shout out. :)
Anyone got enough room for two girls to crash at? Haha
