Lefran:

You could just download windows media player for the mac, but if its on uni hardware that might not be an option.

If you can find a computer with either After Effects of Premiere you should be able to import the wmv's and convert them to quicktimes.

FinalCut might do it as well but I cant vouch for that.

Hope that helps!

That's no probs - just that if people wanted to meet on a weekend then I could probably do those days. Weekdays would be most ideal. :)

I got a new job! So I'll have more Sundays free - maybe open to Bristol visits? I'm a bit busy this and next week but if you guys are up for it then I'll let you know when I have the time off.

There's about 3 weeks to Easter hols. Anyone willing to pitch in on finalising or at least generalising on dates?

yAdam
March 18th, 2006, 02:36 PM
Naomi, you said the holidays were 10th to 21st, so between those dates might be best for most people, seeing as even uni people have easter off too....Would it be better to go for sometime in the middle? some day between the thursday (13th) and the tuesday (18th)?? I have nothing planned for easter yet, so at the moment I can do any day... If people say the days they definately cannot do we can narrow it down...the sooner its sorted the sooner workers can get the day off :)

Yeah, good luck!

Anyone ever had a mechanical pencil jam on them? I had to use a spare lead to shift the bit that got stuck, which snapped the spare in half (reducing its usefulness, since they get loose when there's not much left - I usually end up losing the last cm or so, because it 'spins' in the holder, and it's always the blunt bit that touches the paper).

Lol, pretty much, We had 5 hours to do our final piece but we had breaks in between and were supervised by an examiner.

Thanks, Fran! Yours was really intricate - I'm surprised your hand didn't fall off! :P

I painted a scene from The Subtle Knife (The second novel of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy) using acrylics (also used undercolours! They make a huge difference to the overal piece). I think it's good, though I'm really gutted my SB is nowhere up to scratch (it's my own fault!) so it'll most probably drag down my grade.

Graphics exam next week. Fun fun fun...

Glad the exam went well for you two! Strange you only had 5 hours. In mine i'm pretty sure it was 8 for the AS and then 12 hours for the A level.

Not going to montreal either. I could probably afford it, but I wouldn't have any money left. Definately in for Florence though!

Hey jon, I wouldn't worry. I am fairly sure the workshop won't be until october time or later, and the price will probably be similar to montreal. I can't remember, but it was something like $400.

New outfit, yes (2 shirts, 1 pair of smart peddlepushers and a waistcoat); shoes, almost (decided to be good); and bag, no (though I almost got another bag but decided not to.....will probably end up getting it anyway at some point).

I'm gonna alter the one shirt so it's a wrap-over though 'cause it makes me look a bit boxy otherwise! I'm also thinking of making a bag - need to sketch out some designs first though. It'll be piss easy if I do end up using canvas. :)

No, but highly practical when speed painting was needed. And if it was primed canvas it'd be pretty waterproof.

hi people, just thought i'd take a few min to introduce myself.
I'm a mate of badgers from foundation and now go to uni (and drinking) with him though i'm doing graphic design instead of illustration (which is why a lot of my work is vector based). I think i want to be a graphic designer in later life which seems to be scarily close now, possibly in advertising? I dunno...
It would be really great if people would critique my work even though i know its not the sort of stuff people usually put up in here, although i will be putting a lot more sketchbook and drawn stuff up here, and badger promises he will teach me how to paint properly so i might even get some of that up here.

Great photos Fran! I like the bleakness :) It would definately be great to go and paint there (No digital rubbish ;) :D ), be fun to do some alla prima stuff.. I bought that book (by richard schmid) about a year ago and its got so much info in there, he is quality!

Hey Jaykizi, hope you're having fun on CA :yayca: To start off with figure stuff it's definately a good idea to go to life drawing, that way you can get help if you are having trouble, and also have the benefit of a model being able to stand/sit still.... If you can't then you can get friends/family to sit for you or try and get some quick gestures of people doing things... To suppliment all of that though, its a really really good idea to look at some loomis/hogarth books to start getting a better feel for proportions and muscles as they explain this stuff pretty extensively.

Environments are easy to find :), just draw anything indoors or outdoors....Learn about perspective, 1, 2 and 3 point. If you have the benefit of a tablet then trying to copy from a photo will help you understand colour and how it works as the landscape recedes towars the horizon...Without using the colour picker to get the colours though!!!

just got back from munchen. gotta say, not an amazingly beautiful place, but the basement of the modern art museum has all the 'design' stuff, including some amazing cars, some macs i've never even SEEN, some incredible plane engines and stuff. absolutely beautiful, really, if you're there you owe it to yourself to go and salivate. they even showed the BMW designers making prototypes for the shells of the 5 series OUT OF CLAY. so so so cool. seriously, they did it on the actual chassis of the car. they had one of the bikes they did, with the clay farings, and while i was going 'what's it made from?' i managed to collect some of the clay under my fingernail.

in germany, they expect you to be mature enough not to touch the exhibits without being told apparently hahaha - but they're stupid, cause about twenty people were sitting on one of the exhibits at one point when the security guard came in and had to shout at everyone to get off it hahaha

right, i better sleep. grrr work.

I went to the British Museum on Sat for the first time. WOW. that place is pretty big and pretty inside (just dont expect good service at the sky high cafe within)

Was pretty impressed with the reading rooms (a massive dome vaulted ceiling with a circular array of books...books books - my kind of heaven!)

Makes me wonder, must be a good CA hangout area at the public tables

Hey all, how you doing? Just thought I'd mention here since there doesn't seem to be a set date yet(or at least, not posted here), if there's a London meet going on you might want to postpone it until at least Saturday, since there's going to be a big gallery of Pixar's work on at the Science Museum in London. more info at http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitors/location.asp

Ah crap, I posted the wrong link

http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/exhibitions/pixar/

As far as I can tell they're going to have concept work, digital paintings and I think some of the sculptures done as developments. It says "from rough sketches to finished films", so I'm guessing they've got as much of the development work as possible for it

Cai: Definately! That's why it's so much better to stay the night - the thought of missing out is horrible!!

Adam: Hehe, I only ever stay up to rediculour hours when I have something to finish off/really into a drawing/painting. If the work has to be done, it has to be done. :P I think I'll catch the later train this time - can't be arsed to get up at 4AM again as I'd might as well stay up at this rate!

[Waits for Fran to object and say I always get a minimal amount of sleep...]

Speedpainting! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/bwface.jpg I kicked my grudge against the airbrush and used it for the first time in YEARS. Think it took about 50 mins. C&C welcome~ :D

Cold: As far as I know the meeting place for the 10th is the Michaelangelo gallery at http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/michelangelo/

I think we're also going to the Pixar gallery at the London Science Museum http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/exhibitions/pixar/ ,not sure what's happening with that though

Actually, weren't we gonna go to pixar tomorrow? Kim, wanna do that?

For the Michelangelo exhibition, shouldn't we get the Group ticket (£9), since there's quite a few of us going? In the last meet there were at least 12-13 people at a time.

Have fun tomorrow :) Or today, since it's passed midnight already.

Cold: Thank you!! :D I'll post a reply once I get some more artwork done (it'll have to be digital though. Moo..).

I knew i should have gone to uni in london, I got a tour round st mary's but didn't go because they didn't show me the accomidation, big mistake. With the Michealangelo exhibition my understading io that you can buy tickets at the box office at the venue, but expect to be waiting round a few hours for the time slot. Im going to the michealangelo twice in may, can't wait.

Two weeks a go I was having about 4 hours asleep an night and commuting for 4 hours a day, I can catagorically say it is not worth it, I was non-functional most of the day. Pulling allnighters for exams is the worse tho.

An old mate of mine of mine goes to preston uni, small world heh. I think british unis need to push up the benchmark when it comes to reviewing potential students portfolios.

note - Leonardo exhibiton currently touring, ten pictures, two on them are figurative and they are tiny.

Outfit: White (dare I say, slightly frilled) blouse with puffed shoulders; grey/black bustie (feminine); smart peddle pushers (smart). (Overall: fairly casual)
Accessories: Dark brown wedge sandles with beads'un stuff; mixture of brown/bronze bangles; Italian gold drop earings each with a diamond on the end.

I only do this sotra thing once a week though, haha. It's so nice outside, but all my friends are busy. :( Wanna go to the park....

Aaaaages ago, babe! Just gotta get round to working on the pic (trying to balance out the catching up of previous assignments with the TD). I'm basing my pic on Carla Khlstedt's "Peel". Awesome song. :D I've taken some reference shots already but gotta wait 'til my card reader arrives to transfer them to PC (my camera is suuuper efficient so it shuts off in a minute or two of idleness).

all i texted kim at the exhibit was "HOLY charcoal Value sharks!"

Here is a small online audio version of some art seen in the exhibits
Pixar Audio: 20 years of animat8ion (javascript:MM_openBrWindow('../../visit_moma/audio/audioPopup.html?folder=2005/spec_exhib/Pixar/files','','scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=748, height=620'))

My new Hero:
This dude has the best understanding of value: Simón Vladimir Varela, "Sharks"
sharks (http://www.newyorkology.com/archives/images/pixar.sharks.jpg)

Not surprising, he has absolutely stayed in the undercurrent as both concept artist and layout artists with other animations like the Land before time IV, V, Titan AE, quest for camelot, The Aquatic life (fantastic fabricated designs for puppet motion stop animation for Henry Sellick)

We're nearly at 4000 posts foaks! Here's a new thread that'll hopefully ratchet up that count some.

Question. How has being on my friends list, or the prospect of one day being on it changed your life?

A: I wake up each morning with renewed hope for mankind, and a distinct spring in my step.
B: life just seems worth living again.
C: it was a pivotal moment in my life I will treasure forever
D: all of the above

just idle curiousity on my part you understand? ;)

Just to make sure of the arrangements before I start making bookings, it's gonna be 3:00 on the 10th people are going to the Michaelangelo gallery? Also, is there a particular meeting spot?

MoP: You able to get to Glasgow? If so, Megabus can get you to London for a couple of quid if you don't mind long bus trips (this is why I'm checking details, don't want to end up on the wrong day or something :p) Trains aren't cheap, but I think you can get them for around £25 if you look for it in the right places and they are a lot faster

The date for the next meet is defo Monday 10th April, I'm guessing around noon so we can all meet up, chill out in a cafe and get to know each other, then head off for the exhibition whenever it starts (we'll need ot get tickets too). 3PM is way too late to meet up, imo. Sometime between 10AM-12PM should be fine. There's a Starbucks right across the British Museum anyhoo. :)

As for trains, you can get the Great Western to London (Paddington) for £24.50 if you book early and specify your arrival/departure times. That's the one I get (PLUS, if you have a Young Person's Railcard you can get 1/3 off, soo it comes to about £17ish.) Not bad for a 2-hour ride, and it's easier for me cause it means I can actually draw, heh. Damn motion sickness...:nohope:
