This is fun!
Dirty_c's vast range of colours used in his sketches are actually inspired by the colour of his piss, this is due to his constant drinking of sunny D and sticking his thing in a variety of colourful places all day long.

Tenelaus is actually a Wizard, he's the padawan of Imery, LOOK AT THE BEARDS.

Poshspice is actually a man

Matt Dixon's real art power comes from his unholy affinity with the knights templar, whom charge him in stoats per art piece. The stoats must be magenta and resistant to beta radiation.

Duddlebug is really a superhero named smuggler bug and is used by the police as a wire on their under cover police operatives trying to stop the illegal smuggling of lost series 2 in pommegranites.

RES and WARHEAD's names are in capitals because they can only communicate through shouting, this is of course because their combined height is 7.3cm.

Hi Haynes! yAdam!

Haynes: I like Nakia hehe. looking around, I like your inks more than the coloured stuff. Do you have Painter or Photoshop? I think you should start attacking the stuff digitally, as the colours done with the traditional media are lacking a breadth of palette which you can get from the infinitely flexible digital medium.

Also, stay away from the bevel tool in photoshop - it's one of those things everyone plays with at first that they soon learn not to once they get their arse kicked :P

Cool

The imagery is astounding.

Please go back to tentacle monsters.

But yes, we should all go see Rubens.

And about the City project - yeah, it was somehting I cooked up back when I used to actually *think* about stuff instead of randomly blatting out line art like I have the last few months. I do like the idea of sinking my teeth back into something, I must admit. I don't know about the random organic thing, as it would basically be a lot like it is already, and without momentum I'm not quite sure what would happen.

Hm.

So what about another age of the City? That was always what Badger was trying to get us to do - round off the old one, accept where we were at and move on. It could change quite a lot - doesn't have to be the same City, could just be someone's take on the idea, a completely new city. But I don't want just generic designs that we would have done anyway, I'd like some words and some THINKING like Imery is always trying to make me do haha

What do people think? We could actually kinda tie the COW, EOW etc into it if we really wanted. They could just be a background design principle for stuff we're doing anyway...

trev
November 22nd, 2005, 05:38 PM
Cartoon - Umm happy birthday...magic...juice? o.o

dirty_c - I like the idea of working in the COW and EOW for the city project, though I have a feeling it might make our lives difficult. Perhpas it would be easier if ran the city project in a similar fashion: One week our aim is to work on an enviroment (town square, shrine etc), the next on the inhabitants and then just move on to different parts of the city from there.

Also I had an idea for a meet - what if we theme one of our meets around a movie? We get together, watch the film and then spend the evening making artwork inspired by the film? Im up for offering my place as a venue, but it will only take about 6 people - any more and well need someone else to voulenteer thier place. Whos up for it? :)

ANARKY
November 23rd, 2005, 04:23 AM
I like the idea of the city thing, but I think it should be kept seperate from EOW and COW.
So how does this work? Are we designing a City of our own or something?
We should set 1 or 2 week tasks and then choose the best out of those submitted or some such.

Movie Night sounds fun Trev.

Dirty C
November 23rd, 2005, 12:00 PM
TO be honest, we found that giving people extra workload hardly ever works. The point behind letting COW and EOW contribute to it was supposed to mean that work you were already doing could contribute to the whole thing. So the idea is, someone thinks for a bit, we talk about it, then they post a synopsis like I did last time. From there, we can develop characters conforming to that world's ideas, environments conforming to it yada yada.

If we try to place a second workload on people, I just think it'll fall over. It always has.

November 25th, 2005, 05:03 PM
Happy Birthday to ALL the Berfday folks!!!!!!! :)

Righteeoo,

Just thought to share my goings on today; I had a drawing class with Phil Hale today, and I must say.... it was fucking awesome!
There was about 7 in the class, and it was the regular Friday drawing that the students at the Academy do. Each week a different tutor comes in and they learn new techniques. Today was Phils first time 'teaching' and it was very inspiring indeed. He wanted us to get away from doing fancy, pretty drawings; and actually convert from what our brain sees to the paper. Not drawing what we see exactly infront of us, but show the expression/dynamism and the language that figure is offering us.
As usual, starting off drawing from life, you are always inclinded to produce a pretty picture to the end. We concentrate so much on values, and proportion, we forget that the figure is one great mass, and every bit of it should be treated as fairly as the next. We all have favourites we are good at; the arm, torso, head or hands, that we forget the siloutte of the figure which makes the thing as a whole.
Today we where looking for the simple lines that explain so much in just one stroke. That certain shapes can explain how the muscle is sitting on the bone how it tenses as its stretched, how it relaxes when it rests. Phil sees 'sketching/life drawing' as a tool to a bigger means. Why bother spending hours drawing small intricate details; cross-hatching the shaded area; spending so much time differenciating the darks and lights- all you end up with is a mannequin of the human form which is boringf and flat, when all you need is a good simple line to express the dynamism.
Dynamic poses were not used, but simple relaxed gestures that showed the figure at its best. The technique is almost like line/contour drawing. Starting off with simple lines and following the contour of the body, every now and then putting in lines to show the muscles that are under the skin, you begin to work out how in simple form to express the relationship of one body mass to the other. Stretching, bending, pulling, leaning, arching...This simple but effective techinque really helps you look and observe more....
I really do hope Im making sense, cos I tell ya what, I spent a good 2hrs in the pub chatting nuthin but Phils class and goin over the exercises in my head to better understand the nature and purpose of the way Phil works on his drawing through to painting. A very modest man, he drew with us all and gave each student an individual critique on their path to drawing dynamism and energy; this has proved invaluble and inspiring.
I am fairly drunk, and happy. I need to scan my drawings in and post. Please please please do not quote me on Phils teaching; he is a very humble and modest guy, and my interpretation of todays class may be totally different to those who attended; we have all come away with at least 20 or so energetic drawings, its hard to explain unless your sitting infront of me...

Ummm.....I'm gona go sleep....:)

Molly, WOW. You took a class with Phil Hale, one of the best contempory artists ever. Envy, pure envy. Any chance on elaborating on what you did? I run a figurative art school but come more from the Watts camp i guess, be great to get an insight into how Phil works. Seems like he works on contour and gesture without taking his pencil off the page. Similar working method to Justin Sweet.

Dirty C
November 28th, 2005, 08:50 AM
Yeah, I'm still not sure about how much life drawing/painting is done at the Slade, as the two week thing I did there was purely that, and that is where the Slade's reputation actually comes from. But I saw some of the recent graduate stuff, and it was complete arse. So bit confusing there.

And, ok, hands up everyone if you've already started trying to integrate what Molly said Phil said in your sketchbook heehee *waves own arm emphatically*

Hey... molly. Sounds like you had a very good lesson there.... Thanks for writing it out for everyone! I hear what yer saying about capturing the essence of something without slavishly adhering to the detail... that sculptor we went to the exhimition was the same... people like craig mulins and the like are onto the same idea. Its presenting the eye with something thats fresh... something that captures the essence of the whole without including the unneccisary details. I think the fact that our brains have to fill in the details and make the rest up.. this makes us get more involved and helps us enjoy it more.

The elegance of describing something in a few well placed marks is very satisfying..and great to look at too. One of my drawing teachers in university said to me that If I only did 4 strokes on the page in an hour thats ok.... as long as I was LOOKING hard the whole time.

Anyways, enough Rambling!!! Happy Birthday late for mr Dirty_C!!! I have an oil based present for ya :)

Spent the weekend In Paris... Pompedeu, musee de Orsay and the Louvre... oh my crap monkey fnibble jam (yes you CAN quote me) the louvre if HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE. I had forgotten! Building is like the best part almost!!! Amazing stuff... and an incredible amount of religious fan-art (sorry, but some of that stuff is so pants) Sculptures rocked too.

and my last word.... I really think we should think of having a meet at the british museum some time... central and full of VERY studyable sculptures and antiquities. Especially vis that there city project that surfaces every now and again.

:) i go work now :D

Yeah, Kim, that's a good idea I reckon. That building's pretty amazing, as well. Maybe if we made a quick synopsis of the city thing and then went there looking for reference it'd be cool. Be pretty straight forward if we wanted to do an egyptian type of culture this time round..

Don't think I'm up to much this weekend except for trying to turn my flat into less of a bomb site. Anyone else good for this weekend maybe? Molly, you available, or tied up in life drawing? I seriously have to get my arse to the studio, I'm in Paris again thurs/fri. I might come in and try to do some of the mr.hale-inspired sketching in paint, actually.

@ Trev - dude, awesome angle on that painting, really love the concept. I will agree with DSIllustration advice, more color into the city bits, (obviously, you aint finished yet, so ya prolly know this already) I'm loving the pic tho.
I have to say, (hope I dont sound patronising) but this painting is a huge leap from what you did for uni. Keep at it mate, looking forward to seeing it finished...:)

Tonight, tonight is my schools christmas partay, so I wont be able to make...

Also, I had a weird dream, I was in America at some massive bar with a load of yanks and I bumped into an old friend. Being English an all, greetings are usually loud and blasphemous, I shouted out "Jesus Fucking Christ mate!" and upset all the yanks in the bar... This group of ole biddies held hands and prayed, then left the bar...I tried to apologise but they werent having it...I felt so bad...but, what does it all mean? hhm? hhm? The bar was shit anyway, and they complain about us Brits binge drinking? ok, Im going nowhere with this....:nohope:

Heh, crazy dream Molly , I wish someone would hurry up and invent something where you can rewatch dreams.

Maybe its a prophecy of a future american concep art meet, when concept art has been and gone everyone's an old biddy.

Woohey!

its that University time of year again, where all you kind UK people might be able to give a little advice on Undergraduate study. :bashful:

There’s nothing new is saying the art world today is insane, especially the UK one.
Deciphering the course descriptions is like trying to work out an ancient text.

Loads of the illustration courses seem to advertise themselves with very abstract work. Theres a “Drawing” course at Camberwell, I sware they name these courses just to trap souls into their courses, Its fine art but focused on drawing with wires and things.

Each to his/her own and everything, But I'd just like to get the best possible traditional teaching. Also I’d really like to study near London.

Do you think Illustration is likely to be best path to this? Also I was considering animation, or some kind of Industrial Design (designing architecture would be awesome, but i’ve heard they constantly have to tackle a lot of regulations, and 7 years is a big commitment).

There’s also a course called “Scenic Arts” at Rose Bruford College in Kent, painting and making scene props, A real theatre-ry place . Its had people working from the “The Corpse bride” and in “Gulliver’s Travels” theme park. I’m extremely excited about this one, my only hesitation is it might not teach me as strong art skills as say illustration.

I wonder if its possible to carry on with the study of art in my own time, life drawing, concept art meets :), studies of free books (loomis the god) , its been going pretty well so far.

Cheers for any thoughts and comments...

**edit: And harry, hopefully this time around, a few people will be able to help, since there's a few that have started with uni this year. Cai, Badger, any other animal-flavoured creatures?**

Oi oi!
Basically i learn more about drawing from people on CA and my own independant learning. I can then use this in my projects.
University is worth it for other teaching, printing techniques, colour theory, proffesional practise, broadening your artistic horizons and being inspired by other creative people.
Also you get a degree, which gives you the ability to travel to places.
I think GO and look at a lot of courses. You still don't learn a lot about them, i know it's a fair cynical way of looking at it, but it's true. Art education isn't angled at getting you a job easily.
If you have skype, i'm badgerofvengence and i can easily talk to you about some uni's and courses i looked at.

@Hazamataz.

Rose Bruford college is just down the road from me and is very much a performing arts/drama place. I would imagine there are better places to do illustration but may be worth checking out. Central London is 45mins away by train and although it comes under Kent it's pretty much London.

If you wish to go into film work then it may be more beneficial in that sense as you said, worth checking out. Molly is pretty close to it too. Though it would take about an hour to travel to her even though she is closer than central London, go figure.

Some nice places round there to live, or you could get stuck on one of the council estate's like me. Good bit's and bad bits as always, places to avoid places that are fine. Night life locally is fine for pubs etc in Sidcup itslef if fairly limited, a bus ride to Bromley would be better for nightlife. Again travelling into London is what you would do if you wanted a big night out. Wouldnt want to do it often though as the cost's would soon rack up. Not muc greenery about apart from a few small parks that are usually frequented by suspicios people and chav gangs. Plenty of jobs about at places like Bromley shopping centre and BLuewater, if not more locally.

Ask if you need anymore info.

Dirty C
December 5th, 2005, 03:38 AM
Oh, it might be worth mentioning that the film types I know all say that a lot of people seem to get hired from Bournemouth College, though i think this might be pretty heavy on the 3d.

Bournemouth is an option, they've picked up on the old "3D takes drawing skills" as well. The tutors at my college Hiss and Curse at the mention of its name, which has to be a good sign.

theres a postgrad version in scenic art at the OLD VIC bristol as well http://www.oldvic.ac.uk/scenicart.htm, it looks like the bees knees in terms of traditional painting.

Nifty :)

Ok there are a couple of things that Ive noticed, the sword is at the wrong angle, the hilt should be more in line with the back of her hand - if she takes a swing at someone holding it like that she'll slap em instead of chop :)

The deamon skull shes wearing could use a bit more definition so that its easier to tell those are eye socketes and the bit around her face are jaws. Perhaps adding a nasal cavity so it looks more like a skull and is easier to recognise?

The back leg looks like its placed too far out...your better than anatomy than I am, so your call.

A sujestion would be to make the gun arm into a flame thrower - you could have a little billowing flame trailing oily black smoke. Oh and perhaps have some flesh stretched over her hip, with more chunks missing by the time its half way down her thigh...yum

Anyway, its wicked - looking forwards to seeing it finnished

Yoyoyo my cold bitchen! Just came back from four days sunning my pasty ass on a lovely beach, (looks a bit like this ('http://www.matarangi.co.nz/')) hanging out with ten others drinking faaaantastic local beers and playing stupid games with cards on our foreheads. No room for any of the usual Dirty shennanigans though - bloody five couples!!

Spent New Years wandering round on an amazing pitch black beach bumping into people and looking at the clearest stars I've seen in ten years. Lurvely.

Anyway, miss you all (a bit) and miss you Molly (a lot) and will probably pop up a few more times to torture you all about how much fun I'm having.

Happy New Year and thanks for all the lovely messages from your frozen hearts - Spud wins for most blatant "I'm pissed and I'll call if I wanna" technique :P

I hope you all had a wonderful christmas and new years and I wish you all the best and that your dreams come true!

DC - I miss you too luv - and Im soooooo jealous your out in NZ. The beach in Matarangi looks devine - Im gonna make sure TOm and I get over there this year, wondering on a beach for new years sounds the bees knees - better than dealing with the cold weather and expensive pubs here.

So, resolutions - anyone got any?
- mine is to really and trully try to be a proper, professional, working artist, and to stop wasting my time in jobs I hate;
- eat sensibly, cut down drinking and smoking
- make some money and be HAPPY!

Leonardo Da Vinci used to get ideas meditating / staring at a pile of ashes. And out of that he came up with the helicopter over 5 centuries before anyone else. Ultimate concept artist.
It always a suprise how many people of the past and around now, artists and all, have meditated in one way or another...

For the moment, were we talking about the feb thing being a meeting or a tdome? I thought it was the one-day tdome atm. Though having said that, I'm well up for seeing this Michelangelo exhibition as well. Though organising proper drawing and days out have never gone well, so I think if we do both, they should be considered separately. So are we go for mid/early feb tdome? I was thinking just a weeknight with the topic given at 6pm or something.

If you decide on a date soon, I might be down for a meet. I'm practically spending the whole of feb . the south of England on UNI open days it seems.

The british museum is the widest building i think i've ever seen. Its really really huge...really. Great place to draw from sculptures.

Ben - lol, Im mainly residing in the south west.

I would be up for a meet, although I have no idea what a tdome is - I need enlightening.
Yeah, the British museum is wide. But its missleading, it looks small on the outside and you go inside and its huge. I def need to spend a day in there next time and get some proper sketches done. The V&A is very good for sculptures as well.

Im def going to the Michelangelo exhibition as well.

January 16th, 2006, 03:54 AM
tullie - a thunderdome's a contest, usually with a specific theme, between a number of artists. A time frame and topic are given (usually by the instigator of the 'dome), and the result is decided by either a poll, or by bringing in someone else (typically someone with a lot of experience) to judge.

Just go to the Thunderdome forum to check it out.

btw, the south-west's a cool place to be - wonderful scenery.

I guess everyone has problems and strengths. Thats what makes life interesting! :P. But if you were able to make that sphere, I'm sure with practice you could be a concepting MACHINE.

Oh btw I'm well into my perspective studies now since your advice, cheers . It really does make everything FAR simpler. Drawing is just like lego... but you get to make your own shapes.

love that study sketchling, thought the reflections were a bit crazy until I realized what it was, it's one of Arnaldo Pomodoro's Sfere* thingies innit he put one in Trinity college Dublin as well, I saw it last year, I think he's done 6 or 7 of them.

Ok. I really dont want to be a dickhead, but I've got to seriously ask for a date. The longer i wait the more my train ticket price shoots through the roof. So sometime in the holidays?
Sorry about insistin, but I am a student, which means i'm poor :P

im up for the 16th

Its a thursday... everyone cool with a weekday? If we do a weekend we can meet for lunch and carry on till dinner. So though I can make the 16th it makes sence to do a day out on the 18th or so. What do people think?

Belated welcome to: lefran; yadam, kian300, Quicksilver & tullie!!!

@ ourobouros! life drawing schools in London:
The Art Academy (where I work and attend classes) Check website for summer term evening classes, spring is full
The Princes Drawing School - in Shorditch, very, very good reputation, 10 week courses, specifically for drawing..
Lavender Hill Studios - Clapham google it;
Heatherleys - West London give it a google too...

If your living in Central London, and interested in Saturday life drawing between the hours of 1pm - 6pm (sometimes till 8pm) this could be for you. I used to run them last year at the Art Academy, and wish to start again in February. Its an untutored class, with one or two poses all day. . Cost is £15, but can be less if more people attend. YOU MUST provide your own materials. Easels will be provided. Maximum in the class is around 8 - 10 people, any more and it can get too crowded. Theres a common room with tea/coffe making facilities and microwaves. It can get pretty cold there so I do suggest 2 layers or so.

If your interested, please PM me.

Im so happy to be a student again:)

The Saturday thing I mentioned is an on-going class, not just a meet for the UK peeps here, but others from my school turn up & those dedicated.
^This isnt an official uk meet, just a class if ur extremely interested...

Im happy to meet folks DURING the day on Thursday 16th Feb, or Weds, or Friday, tho it can depend on work. I find Saturday gallery/museum roaming can be very busy. But, a Saturday meet I can do too.

Quicksilver, if you guys up north wana meet during the day, holler back!

Hi Molly.
Yeah Id hope for a day job. If im gonna get myself down to london, Id prefer a whole day. I was hoping for a day of drawing, then a stint in the ol' pub drawing some funstuff. I'm new to this, so i'm not 100% on what goes on.

Oooooookay, I've asked my manager if I could have every other Saturday off to attend life drawing classes, sooo if all works out, I should have Sat 11th Feb off. Fran and I are thinking about staying the night too, so we could go out again on Sunday.

What do you think? It would be great to set a date pretty soon so I can book sunday off as well if I have to.

Molly: Cool! Sure thing. ^_^
