Shit, I'll hang on to the friggin' wings if I have to! TheBrave asked Manley for a less ambiguous itinerary, a clearer mission statement (damn, I've been hanging around the marketing suits too long...) :)

Our head of art will probably green light the trip if he sees that it's worth shelling out 800 odd sheets for.

Manley says he'll address his concerns in the workshop section.

Hello guys, Just wanted to ask a question. (unrelated to Prague lol) I live in Leeds, and I don't plan on going to sixth form, to do an A-level in art there but go straight to the nearest college. (Leeds College of Art and Design) Do you think this would be a good move? What other really good art schools are there in Britain? I've heard the Royal College of Art is the best in England (probably really expensive) And Glasgow Art School. Which do you guys reccomend and where are you going/ went?
And... whats the difference between an Art School, and an Art College?

Being the helpful people that you are, could ya help me out?

Thanks.

yo blog i went leeds college of art and design i did a college diploma course it was pretty terrible
if you DO go make sure you do a course you KNOW you want to improve your skills in, the only class which i thought was worth doing (which i wasnt in) was the illustration one, where they teach you all drawing skills like perspective and figuritive stuff
Im not sure what other decent colleges, unis there are in UK im looking at ARts college london, i read that it has the highest rate of finished students that become unemployed lol
anyway go and live in hyde park, as in leeds not london
if you go to that college when you go for an interview dont see the teacher, instead be like yo let me see the studio, then see the students and the work they do

I say do A levels. Do them in the things you enjoy they will broaden your horizons more making you a better artist. I did A levels and meeting people who had gone straight into art i'm glad i did. I was taught a lot about philosphy which i now really like. Generally they are much more valid than other routes, or so i have been told by designers.
Also it gives you something to fall back on.

Well, the Prague workshop looks like it's going to have the biggest UK turnout so far, though sadly neither Matt Dixon (who ain't round these parts much these days) or Summer Pudding are gonna make it. At any rate, you can see from past posts that the workshops always create a great deal of enthusiasm, both in the participants and those that unfortunately didn't make it. Cheshire isn't *that* far away (Harry often comes down from Manchester) so the next time we plan a decent meet, it'd be nice to meet you.

Cheers

The bird Flu:

Main summary is: if you have time, get vaccinated agianst the normal Human influenza virus. If the population is sufficiently vaccinated, the human flu virus does not circulate in the population and therefore has less opportunity to cross with a bird flu strain and become transmittable from human to human. Once a new, mutated strain emerges, it will take around three months to develop a vaccine against it.

if the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus gets a chance to cross with human flu strains it will become highly contagious as no one will be immune to it.

errr - and i guess (you can choose not to eat to eat poultry, although its probable close contact with live fowl, that results in the possible cross transmission)

Some final thoughts and advice for prague:

Pickpockets

Pickpocketing is one of Prague's most common crimes. We are sad every time we hear stories about someone getting their money, documents, camera or cell phone stolen.

An advertising campaign run by the City of Prague
in 2005 to try and reduce the incidence of petty theft

First of all, we have two rather contradictory pieces of advice:

1) Don't underestimate Prague pickpockets and don't think you can outsmart them. Many of them are highly skilled "professionals".

2) Don't become paranoid. Make sure you are still enjoying yourself on your trip. Although pickpocketing is a problem in Prague, just like it is a problem in many European tourist destinations, it doesn't mean that thieves are waiting for you at every corner. We have been robbed in Naples and Genoa, but never in Prague - knock on wood.

Czech police probably won't do much to help you if you were robbed (just like the police in some other European cities), so prevention is your best protection. Here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of a pickpocket:

• Don't carry large amounts of cash with you. Carry a credit card and take
- money out of a cash machine as you go. Cash machines are plentiful in
- Prague and their screens usually come with an English language version.
• Leave important documents in a safe deposit box at your hotel. You should
- carry your passport with you, but leave a copy of it at your hotel in case the
- original gets lost. Making copies of your important documents is always a good
- idea in when traveling.
• Be careful on crowded trams and subways, especially in the historical center
of Prague. Know what's happening around you, try not to find yourself squeezed in a crowd of other passengers.
• Wear a money belt instead of a handbag. Although it can be a bit of a nuisance, we have found it to be a very secure place to keep our valuables. In addition, not having to worry about a handbag or wallet will free up your mind to fully appreciate the beauty of Prague.
• If you are carrying a handbag, always be aware of it. Keep it closed up and hold on to it in busy areas.
• Don't take out your wallet or money in busy areas.
• Don't change money on the street. There are plenty of banks to choose from.
• Be especially careful in very touristy areas: on Karlova and Melantrichova Streets, on the Charles Bridge, on the Old Town Square, on trams 22 and 23, in busy stores.

Taking a Taxi

Taking a taxi in Prague can turn into one of those experiences that can ruin your day. Prague taxi drivers are known for their shameless and often rude treatment of tourists and for charging prices several times higher than what you should pay. Please read Taking a Taxi (http://www.myczechrepublic.com/prague/prague_taxi.html) a Taxi in Prague to get a few pieces of advice

Unsafe Areas

Aside from property crime, Prague is a relatively safe city. The rate of violent crime is low and most areas of Prague are safe to walk around even after dark. Be careful on Wenceslas Square at night - there have been cases of trusting tourists or "love-seekers" being robbed of all their money. If you use common sense and follow your intuition, you should be able to stay out of harm's way

Police Stations

If you need to contact the police, call 158 or the Emergency Central Number 112.

Below is a list of police stations in the city center:

Old Town

Bartolomějská 14, Prague 1
24-hour phone: 974 851 700

Lesser Town

Vlašská 3, Prague 1
24-hour phone: 974 851 730

New Town

Benediktská 1, Prague 1
24-hour phone: 974 851 710

Krakovská 11, Prague 1
24-hour phone: 974 851 720

Public Transportation Tickets, Fares and Schedules

Tickets - Prices valid from July 1, 2005

The Prague public transport system uses two types of tickets:

Single ticket

(for one use/short ride)
Adults: 14 Kč, children 6-15 years: 7 Kč, children under 6: free
This ticket can only be used one time on one type of transportation. It is valid for 20 minutes from validation on trams and buses or 5 stations on the subway, allowing transfers between subway stations for up to 30 min. of total time of use. This ticket is not valid on night trams and buses and on the Petřín funicular.

Transfer ticket

(for multiple use/long ride)
Adults: 20 Kč, children 6-15 years: 10 Kč, children under 6: free
This ticket can be used on any type of public transportation and allows transfers between lines (subway to subway, tram to tram, etc.) and types of transport (subway to tram, tram to bus, etc.) for up to 75 min. from validation (90 min. on weekends/holidays and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays).

Single and transfer tickets are sold through yellow ticket vending machines located at every metro station (also in English, coins only), at ticket offices located at some metro stations, at a Tabák/Trafika, at some newsstands, and at tourist information centers.

A ticket needs to be punched at the entrance to the metro station and on the tram/bus to mark the start of the validation period.

Passes

There are several short-term and long-term passes available:

Short-term (tourist) passes:

24-hour pass: 80 Kč
3-day pass: 220 Kč
7-day pass: 280 Kč
15-day pass: 320 Kč

Long-term passes (issued with a photo-ID):

Monthly: 460 Kč
Quarterly: 1,260 Kč
Annual: 4,150 Kč

Passes can be used on any type of Prague public transportation for the duration of the period for which the pass is valid. Children under 6 ride free.

Short-term (tourist) passes are sold at ticket offices located at some metro stations and at tourist information centers. Long-term passes are sold at ticket offices at some metro stations

Ticket offices are located at some metro stations (e.g. Dejvická, Hradčanská, Můstek, Florenc, Hlavní nádraľí, Nádraľí Holeąovice) and are usually open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., some closed for lunch

To the airport and back again

As you get off your flight in Prague, you will have several options of reaching your destination:

1) Bus

The airport in Prague is serviced by two buses: no. 119 and no. 100. Taking the bus is the cheapest way to get to and from the airport. Bus 119 is the better choice if your destination is in the historical center of Prague (the Old Town, Lesser Town, New Town, Prague Castle area) as it connects with line A of the metro, which will get you to the center in no time (2 - 4 stops, depending on where you're going). To take either of the buses, you will need a public transport ticket for 20 Kč (transfer ticket) - see Tickets, Fares, Schedules - or you can pay the bus driver directly (the ticket may cost a little more).

• Bus 119

Bus 119 runs between the Ruzyně Airport and Dejvická metro station (line A). Connections run every 7 to 20 minutes and the ride takes 20 minutes.

Traveling from the airport:
Bus 119 leaves from the second platform outside the Arrivals terminal and runs from 4:25 a.m. until 11:40 p.m. It will take you to the Dejvická metro station, which is the last stop. From there, you can take the metro using the same ticket (watch the time that's passed since the validation) to continue to your destination. Metro stations: Malostranská - Malá Strana, Staroměstská - Old Town, Můstek - bottom of Wenceslas Square, Muzeum - top of Wenceslas Square.

Traveling to the airport:
Take the metro to Dejvická (line A). Bus 119 leaves from near the station exit and runs from 4:52 a.m. till 0:18 a.m. The airport is the last stop

have fun and be Safe!

Ok, instructions for you lot. Lucky I remembered this from last time, cause I had to pick up a group of lost Aussies on my way through the airport as well.

When you come out of the airport, go to the 'bus tram train' info place, to the right of the main exit. Buy tickets there. I Imagine we'll walk around Prague more than anything, so if I were you, I'd just get the single use - with transfer - ticket. Then you go outside, and cross the first road in front of you, then you get bus number 100 or 119. Tsake that to the end, then get on the green (A) tube line and take it to Mustek. From there, there seem to be to exits, hich confused the hell out of me and my pet aussies, but if you get the right one, then Vodickova (pronounced 'vodich-kova' if you're asking) should be really close, and you're after number 12. If you come out the wrong exit and end up a cobbled street area (quite posh) then you need to go to your right, then take the first left, and first right to get to Vodickova.

Good luck, and call me when you're lost :)

Looking at the map of prague (one that i cobbled together) the two places to sketch are the Old Town NW of Vodickova) and the Prague Castle & Boulevard (across the river West by NW) - would a 280 7 day pass be cheaper option?

Seriously, though, I've got to get over to the next Euro one...

Totally unrelated, but why do we have a '7Up' smiley?

Yeah that'll be Cai all right. Ideally there'd be a little tentacle monster clutching it.

And thanks Profil, nice to meet you too. And don't worry, everyone's a little weirded out at their first workshop - though in reality, this was the most relaxed it's ever been by far. Still in a bit of a daze, to be honest.

So peeps, who's up for a quick meet this week to talk about how great we all are and who got the biggest hug from Marko??? (It was me, by the way. Well, maybe Molly. Hug .)

Oh, and I just have to say, by the way - Koshime's reflections idea wasn't too bad. It really was so nice meeting everyone. I think I'll have to go build my buddies list up some and say hi to a few scandinavians and intern types.

And big shouts to all the uk types we met there - sorry I didn't get to spend too much time with some of you - blog, it's a pity you didn't make yourself known a bit sooner - we're not *that* scary are we?? Eri, it was one hell of a pleasure hanging out with you, and i'd love to see your turret some time. Ahem.

I was saying to Cai on the way home last night how funny ti all is. After three workshops and eighteen months of me fervently hitting anyone who slavishly asked dumb questions about materials, and finally going to a workshop where it wasn't asked once, I've just realised that I need to be using a clutch pencil and not any other kind. It's like finding out **there really is an easter bunny***. Weird hahaha

Love ya kids

Hello my name's Mary, i'm pretty new to the blogging and art forum world!

I'm a third year arts student, I'm studying at dartington college of arts, i dont know if anyone knows it, it's down in devon with the cows.

Here is an interactive website that i'm working on at the moment:

www.conglomeration.org.uk.

Go on and fill out a piece of your life in a time slot, it becomes a mutiple diary or loads of people from across the world then I attempt to re-live the whole thing.

Let me know what you think, most people don't really get it or like it but it would be nice to hear any comments on.

Cool

Welcome Mary Fox,

This is cool thing your doing, brave too. I tried to imagine what your life in our shoes would be like if you got all the participants from the Prague workshop to fill in your diary. I think your liver would die, and you'd become delirious with the lack of sleep. On the whole, you'd be so inspired and humbled too because of the amazing art you would've seen etc, so I suppose it would be worth it???

Im gonna find a few days in your diary, and fill em in. I'll try to remember what I did then, but Im sure you'll find it interesting.

Well, post some art if you can, we would love to see...

Hahaha hey Drafon dude that's pretty funny. I kinda think you should stick with it, just cause it'll give you something to explain. You could make up a whole bullshit mythology about the mysterious race of Drafonia on the sunken continent and shit hahaa

yeah, Mary, you're gonna need assistants to be your boyfriend and shit (though I think that may have been your sister) and to roll the potato towards you. Where you live then?

Hey Dafon, Mary
Dafon your name kinda reminds me of daffid, from little britain.... he he he

Anyway, on to the important bit.
Does anyone have any preferences for a UK meet? January any good? Or early Febuary could be nice, if a little cold. I'm guessing everyone will move to stressville for Christmas time?

Or the other discussion i had with Molly was another Thunderdome? Who would be up for that? Who would we take on? Scandinavia? Australasia? Or Give the American's another kicking before they have time to re-group after the last one?

Ideas? recipes for good pies?
Halloween!! Is Aly out collecting Bunnies? Is Dirty_C going to a party? Is anyone doing anything silly?

Dirty C
October 31st, 2005, 11:14 PM
Thoseare far too far away for my liking :)

Y'know what? I completely forgot about halloween and didn't do anything. I had invites to half a dozen things, then I found out that I'd spent the whole weekend sitting in a bar in brick lane with it slipping me by. Oh well.

Though I think this weekend I'm going to some huge 'angels and devils' type thing. These things are always incredibly cheesy, but have a way of pulling thousands of fit birds, in my experience. Oh well, I'll have to put up with them I guess haha

And Mary, I'm from New Zealand and living in London. SO unless you're up for some pretty long distance potato rolling, I won't be able to help :P

For line work - I think the best teacher..is not so much a book but everything around you. You can choose any medium you want. be it pencile or pen. the pen is less forgiving but has lovely dark lines and fantastic blacks..For gradation, and skin tone, charcoal and pencil afford brilliant control.

I met this guy in prague - I think he has great line and weight control (thick pen and thin pen) so check his sketchbook out http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47314

Hello! Adi , Asgardian
Crofty Welcome, just draw from life. I find that helps and draw in pen to increase your confidence, take your time and just get the make right. Me and Eriboss are up the road in Bristol. You a student?

I'm guessing from the only responce being Andrew's that you guys are snowed in? Though Posh did say he was.

Andrew, I'm guessing you've had an offer you can't refuse?

thanks guys
koshime>>>> im drawing quite often from life and it is helpful. great link btw, that guy is pretty awesome

badger>>>> yeah ill give pen a go. i am a student, a levels tho,

its just in a few threads on here the beginner is just told to keep drawing circles and lines and cubes then more circles, but im getting bored! i can hack it every now and then but page upon page of whole wheat, er lines and circles is tedious. So you reckon just drawing from life will help just the same?

thanks

sketchling
November 6th, 2005, 06:32 PM
Welcome Crofty!

Yeah... draw from life and draw often is the best advice... Though id say go with any medium really. Pen is great for confidence, but shading and tone tend to fall by the wayside...there is no real grey area without a lot of work. I find a pacer pencil with a darker 2b lead gives the same feel as a pen... but you can shade and rub out if need be :P

But try everything. play. Drawing is fun when yer not tearing yer hair out.

:)

:edit:
Oh, and if you seriously want to fast track yer development, learn the underlying concepts of perspective(this is INCREDIBLY important) , shading and form... Learn them on simple every day objects... what makes a bottle 'shiny' etc. if you learn this stuff on SIMPLE studies... things like faces or bodies will become FAR less daunting. I wish id actually done this as id be a lot better now!!!

[edit - posted this in the US one by accident.]

Hi guys, I figured a few of the UK people might be interested in some Gnomon DVDs that I'm parting with. UK only.

mods: if this is innapropriate, please remove this. But I thought this would be of interest to UK people/students for whom international postage etc. is a little too high.

Sketchling - Nados is cool with me :) *drool*

Just a sujestion - how about we come up with a common topic or theme for the meet, that we can all have a bash at drawing? Since I always go to sketch meets all excited and then cant think of anything to draw!

I think the nandos idea ain't bad actually. Anyone else have an opinion?

*trev: not a bad idea, mate. I'm always happy to doodle incessantly, but true, some people sit there twiddling their thumbs. Any suggestions? How about "the day I tried to live?" - yay old soundgarden song, hehe - but with lots of potential pictorial ideas - like 'the day i decided to steal a giant mech and destroy the world haha*

Hi Koshime.

The uk market seems very tough to get into to me at the moment. I Haven't been doing this for very long though, so I am not surprised that it is taking me a while to break into the market.

As for talent, I don't really know. I expect the same levels of skill are nedded here as anywhere else in the world. Talent is different to skill though. I am fairly young and know that I have a long way to go in terms of skill. However from a talent point of view I believe that I do have the basic abilities to get there eventually.

These things are all just a matter of opinion though.

Im attempting to Get into Concept Art at the Moment. And it seems very slow right now. But, it is just before Xmas, the slowest time of the year for Jobs anyway. So im not worried, fingers crossed for next year.

The standard of Talent seems fairly High, but not unobtainable for most of us. Its more a drive and creativity I think, and some Right place right time Luck!

I'll run home and grab your 'art of the two towers' book as well, dude.

So what time should we meet at Nandos? Maybe we should meet at a local pub instead so that we can proceed to nandos when we're all together? Otherwise the table might be difficult to sort out. In which case, how about the Nellie Dean or something? On Dean Street..

Looks like this: http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/41/416/Nellie_Dean/Soho

you're all at nandos still so i can say whatever i want about you

koshime and kim are having a love child that neither of their birds know about - it's name will be 'control T' after their favourite photoshop function. it will radiate beautiful lens flares all day long

cai's tentacle monsters are actually portraits of his shrivelled penis. he has it in a pickle jar on his desk.

molly's head? yeah, it's really that shape.

badger once tried to tell me he was actually a skunk. i still wouldn't let him piss on me.

eriboss's real name is Father Fingerson. I'll let you figure that one out.

Andrew Ley's not his real name. He was trying for the chicks but couldn't spell 'andrew wants to get laid'.

summer pudding is called that cause he was once caught being intimate with a bowl full of blackberries. this also explains his offputting skin colour.
