I was going to suggest that if you are looking for a place to live in London, I don't know if many people were suggesting locations, but Battersea might be a bit of a bum to get to your campus. Somewhere between Chiswick and Hammersmith might be easier especially for tubes; you get from there to Baker Street and get on the metropolitan line easier...just a suggestion !

Yeah, hey Love.

Sunrise may seem like a nasty opponent to have, but when I met him in SF, he was actually 0 for 5 thunderdomes. Hell, even I beat him. So your best bet is to hope that he doesn't get a topic which really suits his style, like, oh, demons or something.

:teeth: UK workshop!

exciting!, well the earlier I knew the the dates the better, because then I could get the £1 coach down.

Maybe I could ask them to cryogenically freeze me for the aeon of a journey.

As for activities. How about something like the city project, or a mini comicbook, but just a one off. Or we could maybe organise like a speed thunderdome. Amongst UKers or even against another country. Baisically anything with a little challenge to focus on and a pretty picture at the end

I liked the sound in the belgium workshop of doing a trip somewhere, for future workshops maybe. I want to SIEGE a castle or Commandeer a Galleon!!

Dirty C
July 28th, 2005, 01:22 PM
As for activities. How about something like the city project,

That's a fucking *excellent* idea. grabbing a bunch of life drawings in the daytime, then using those to create character concepts based on an overall theme is a wicked way to organise things.

What's everyone think about this kind of idea? Would work really well if we had a male model and a female model - if we managed two days, then this would be great.

koshime
July 28th, 2005, 01:31 PM

Molly
July 28th, 2005, 04:49 PM
RIGHT-EE-OOO

I have been pondering this concept fo AGES and all I need for you UK folk, is attendance, and if ANY of you pros can contribute to demos...

I have the space. I can get models. I can get a nice expensive-looking projector for the demos; all i want is volunteers for digital demos, providing your own laptops etc, and attendance from folks for the day life drawing classes I'll be running.

Gent, Belgium is up running, gone. And for us UK folk to not have a meet ASAP, would, well, be silly! Theres plenty of you out there we still need to meet, and it would be a shame to not use the facitities I have access to!

I want commitment from you guys, and a lil time set aside for something you dont get to do everyday. If you have loved ones who object then bring them along; if you have loved ones who dont understand- explain to them , and then bring them along...;)

RIGHT - I'd like to organize a day session life drawing, from 10am till 5pm then an evening of digi-demos from 6.30pm till 9-9.30pm of character, environment, vehicle drawing etc...so ALL involved in the UK group can see and hear what the rest get up to, learn, converse and inspire from each other...

The other is a whole days life drawing, then evening drinks drawing sketching getting to know one another, THEN digital demos the next day in environments, characters, vehicles and then maybe a lil Thunderdome in the afternoon/evening to finish off.

In My Opinion - we should have this meet. I know PLENTY of you guys have family commitments, but in order for us all to keep up with the Jones; keep in the loop - WHATEVER... a UK meet like this is a must, I will not ask this again of you all untill next year, but if we get this done BEFORE the Prague workshop at least those knowing they will NOT be going can have some kind of contact with fellow CA.orgians.

Now, I do need to know ASAP:
WHO will attend?
WHO would like to demonstrate? I need a character person, environment person, vehicles etc

There are hostels in the London Bridge Area (south of the River, plenty o'pubs etc)

SO PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE

PM me or reply to this thread...LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!!!!!!!

Molly
July 29th, 2005, 08:43 AM
OK FOLKS

I'm thinking the weekend of the 20th & 21st of Aug

I'd like the 2 days, as this will give us all time to do actual work, ya know?

For the Saturday - life drawing from 11.00am - 5pm (gestures, then one or 2 long poses) break, then have some digital demos in the evening. There is a medium sized common room with a nice large white wall to bounce images off...
Sunday we could start with some digital demos, environments and vehicles etc, and have a mini-thunderdome in the afternoon.

This is what I'd like to happen, if folks here from our thread, would be kind enough to demonstrate their skills to us, regarding what they do in their daily lives, would be fantastic.(PLEASE, PLEASE, PAA-LEEEASE)

If you are up fo it, please PM me.

Hey Molly

This sounds great, suprised no one ever thought of getting something like this going sooner(or have they?). I run regular life drawing classes and teach a number of worshops anually in digital and traditional painting and drawing. I know how hard it is to organize these events but if any one can you surely can and its a great opportunity to get together for some serious creative inspiration and group learning. Good luck with it all and it would be great to see some photos of the event and results of the demo's and workshops. Kudos Molly.

Hello Folks,

I'd like to run some details by you all:

The meet on Saturday will start at 10.30am - till 6.00pm
I have a model for Saturday, he's very good, perfect for gestures, good physique. He'll bring some funky clothing (big boots, etc) and I'll bring some props to make the drawing more interesting (I have a sword at home and can get a wooden samurai sword no probs...) I am going to ask him if he can get a female model too;
I'd like to start with various timed gesture drawings, quick poses, then various long poses afterwards. In the evening, we can set up the cpu and projector, and watch a demo and sketch etc. Work/drawings can be kept at the Academy; I'd like us all to put them up on the wall to view. If you are not too confident with your life studies, please please please do not hesitate to ask ANYONE in the group for help and advice. The purpose of the weekend is to learn from eachother, and get to know ppl too.

For Sunday 21st Aug 11am - 5pm I'd like us all to look at our drawings, and spend the day drawing from imagination, using drawings from Sat as reference, any books you have (please bring along) for concept inspiration, and create your own character from it. Digital demos will be given through the day, so we can ask questions, get advice etc etc.

PLEASE BRING YOUR LAPTOPS IF YOU HAVE THEM.
IF you have toned paper, A1 size, bring that too.
I will be providing A1 white paper for us all, so please do not worry bout that;
Please bring your own pens, pencils, charcoal etc, as the Academy only provides for their Full Time students.

The cost for the weekend, is £15 EACH.
Please PM me with saying:
" I <state your name> confirm my attendance to the UK meet 20-21st Aug 2005!"

Love ya Mollyx

****************DEMO IDEAS FOR SAT/SUN******************

At the moment I am planning to arrive and completly wing it, BUT, is there anything anyone wants me to do? There are two sides to a demo I guess... the artistic part of making a successful painting and the technical side of making photoshop into an extension of your hands.... I can adlib the first bit, but if anyones gonna get anything useful out of the second, they need to ask questions!!!! Ill just not think to tell people what im doing if im not asked!

I have found in the past that people say 'oh, there was this thing in photoshop i wanted to learn how to do... but I cant remember what it was..... um. yeah...' Which doesnt help anyone... SO, if people can think of questions or things they want to know about photoshop BEFORE the workshop, and WRITE THEM DOWN then maybe I can help!

What kind of things would people most like me to demo as well? Lots of quick paintings of landscapes, environs etc? or one more finished type of thing? Probably going for a combo of those at da mo.

Anyways, I go back to this work thing now.. :D

I recently (a few weeks ago) did a week of life drawing at Heatherly's which was absolutely fantastic and highly recommendable. i've no idea what the other stuff they do is like but this week was great. here's a few examples (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=48532) of the drawings i did in that week.

does anybody know if lavender hill studios is really new? (i have a friend who spent a year in florence at Cecil studios and said she was going to attend a school being set up by some previous cecil people)

Ok ok ok I'm finally getting off my arss and gonna introduce myself to you guys :nohope: I'm so very sry i've been a member since May this year I think and this is first time i've introduced myself properly to people on this site, most rude of me I know :dur:.
I'm Porgy by the way or George to use my real indenity. I'm 18 and I live near Oxford in a place called Haddenham very near to where the badger lives, him and pupil r the only people I kinda know on this site cos they went to the same school as me.
This is a good thread (and website in general of course) by the way, it's good to see local artists chin wagging.
Anyhows there I've finally said hello.
I hope to squeeze my way into your little uk crew if that's ok?

(Man I'm such a lazy git!)

Hi Guys,

First of all just wanted to say thanks to Molly for the life drawing class on Saturday, it was my first ever life class and a great help ! :bashful: you can see my efforts in my sketchbook. :nohope:

Sketchling; wouldn't mind seeing a demo on the technical side of photoshop and seeing some enviro stuff - especially on how to 'set up' photoshop before actually doing any drawing. Look forward to Saturday ! :rendered:

Hi Porgy, welcome to CA.....

haha like the DSG sketchling.

almost missed the reflections of the people in the room in those glossy glossy eyes, very nice.

In the demo It'd be cool to have a quick explanation of one of these effects maybe, I've seem some of your chrome is very nice too.

From another meet i've always remebered a suggestion you made in using lines to show the form of an object (the drawing was of someones robot).
More stuff like this would be great.

Hey there porgy and fishw, pull up a pencil and make yourself at home.

I'd really like to NOT have to post this message again. I need to know for definate how many will be turning up; also, I need to consider the space and peoples interests.

You can either send a PM through your User CP (situated at the top of the window, to your left; or click the name of the user you want to contact, a menu will drop down, then choose "Send Private Message"

I've met Scott Pohlschmidt of the Lavender Hill Studios, painted with him on several occasions. He's an ex Charles Cecil student in Florence Italy and is a very good painter. The atelier looks good, very traditional grounding but its good to have something of its kind in London. I'd recommend em. :teeth:

Also of course to Molly for organising the thing aswell a really good job, and I just didn't realise how nice and friendly you were and everyone else there too. ( You really do learn so much more around talented people.)
My final shout out goes to Badger for ragging mine and pupil's arss's down the M40 last night dodging all those silly drivers most kind of you, I don't think we could of stomached a full journey again on that bloody bus.

Anyhow, thanks loads to everyone that came, Kim and Petey Pudding for the demos - think it worked really well having three people who worked so differently and had such different things to contribute - and number one nigga Mollay for sorting this all out.

Really pleased with the format of this one as well, dividing between the analogue and digital days. Next time I'd like to see my scanner get used and maybe we could do some collaborative artwork. Thinking about it, I'd like to show you lot how to cheat the lighting when quickly colouring a sketch. Well, maybe I shouldn't show you *everything* but hell, whatever, it'd be funny if everyone started looking like me hehe

Dude... love that first illustration!!! Great stuff.

The site is wicked, but I think it would be a better idea to give people the option to dock the navigation... rather than require them to find it first time. That way they know its there and can get rid of it when browsing.... if someone has to search for a way around the site it can get frustrating (it should be effortless) and the people you want to view your stuff wont have the time to spare... My guess anyways

:) Wicked though. I love flash! (mozilla doesnt though :( )

Kim, since my tablet is at work and by boss is on holiday, I've been playing with Photoshop brushes. Thanks to your tutelage I've made my first brush, which I'm extremely pleased with - I call it "turtle arse". Unfortunately I killed SmartFTP, which was the only thing that remembered my FTP site password, so no one else can revel in the splendour of my turtle arse texture, but I'm sure you'll all sleep more easily knowing it's out there somewhere.

In other news; a random phone call asked me to story board a short film. They emailed me the script and I'm going to discuss it with the director on Sunday. I be excited!

I know! She's basically completely inept in terms of mark making, colour theory, composition, paint handling and anatomy.

Fuck it. Oh well, I'll just go try score some chicks and learn what I can. We're doing a sustained pose with the model for NINE DAYS!!! Can't understand or believe it, to be honest. I figure I'll probably knock off a couple of paintings in that time, hopefully one really well finished thing I'm happy with (for the requisite five seconds) and a couple of other angles which I can learn more during.

Awright babe! I dunno what you're up to today, I'm probably tied up tonight, but give me a shout anyhow. I'm all curiously awake after going home 12 hours earlier than I expected to (I should still be out, technically) so have the day free for ambling about or whatever. Hope you have a great day at any rate, and I'll see you soon enough even if not today.

Hey everyone, just gotta give props to a friend of mine in Australia. He's 18, and since I've known him - about two years - he's progressed like a demon on fire. The past year he's perfected pencil SPs to such a degree it's alarming. The link is his final art project for HIGH SCHOOL.

We should all be ashamed of ourselves..

I can already tell you that. The Slade course started today, and I think it's going to be great. In more than one way - it's me, one old dude and like ten fit as fuck chelsea girls. And if my sick brain had its way, what i would be losing is the right to enter US soil.

*edit: Oh yeah, Molly, I've been in serious trouble today as well. After I got home from your thing, me and my stupid drunken ass decided to go out again! I went to a dnb gig in Old St at 1am and got home again at around four. Course the bloody slade started at 9 o'clock, so I had to be up at seven. I've had the frickin shakes all day, and yes, the sarcasm's back..

Oh, and in other news, one of our two models doesn't shave *anything* but has - get this - breast implants. How the hell does that happen?? Aren't those like diametrically opposed belief systems??

Well, I was talking to some of my little tribe of fit bitches today, and they reckon they're not fake, just really really great tits. So there you go.

I went to an art store today, and like an arse, dropped £200 on f*cking oil paint. And there's bugger all of it. Word of advice - don't buy Old Holland series 4 paints unless you really mean it. And I got two canvases - the biggest is four foot by five - so I think I'm gonna have to go back and get some cheaper paint to cover the majority of the surface haha

The tattoo convention is on October 7th, 8th and 9th. Looking to go on the 8th which is a Saturday, and will probably bring drinking money as were in town. ;)

It's £15 a ticket.

A tattoo convention (from what I gather) is where you can go and just see people with lots of tattoo's, watch guys at work and generally get idea's for tattoo's, there should also be a bar! Never been to one but am looking for idea's for a tattoo i'm going to get so thought I'd pop along.

Got to go along and watch this guy at work though at some point. http://www.boristattoo.zalaszam.hu/index_e.html Check out this guys work in the gallery section, and remember that they are tattoo's onto people's skin. It's amazing.

Let me know by next week if your interested.

If you want to look at it in a very basic way then yes it could be seen as that. It's more like an art exhibition really, just that the art is mainly on, and being put onto people. Having an interest in tattoo's, or at least wanting to understand a very specialist type of art is probably necessary.

Clink on the the tabs at the left hand side of this page, there's some of what is going on. http://www.thelondontattooconvention.com/events.html

I'm particularly interested in seeing the Art Fusion thing and also the "Hand Traditional Tattoo's".

Yeah - Kim, the place is frickin spectacular. Molly, I'll talk to you tonight, but i may be keen to do five days or something, depending on pretty much everything, obviously. I've been before, but it's such a cool place, and I may never get the chance to go back. So I can't see any reason not to enjoy one or two extra days while I'm there anyway.

Ooh, and I'm going to Barcelona! Damn, that's a cool city!

*edit*: I've just been thinking. I guess this might seem obvious to some people, but I guess it never really did to me before.

Has anyone noticed that the kind of person who does environments tends to be a much more kinda chilled out person than the character dudes? I'm just kinda thinking about the fact that me and molly kinda hang together and get stoned and talk shite while koshime and sketchling hang together and obsess over photoshop filters hahaha. I don't mean that in a nasty way or anything, i just mean that one type tends to gravitate to its own, and I don't think it's purely a matter of 'shared interest' but also a real personality archetype.

Hey, T, are we mentioning the thing we're discussing tomorrow? I dunno why we wouldn't be, just that we haven't, so..

Good luck with the gf, Eri. The workshops are best enjoyed as really intensive, first-person immersive experiences. It'd be a pity not to enjoy it properly cause you felt guilty about your partner feeling left out in a foreign city.

the only down side of bringing our laptops is the need for powersource, constant lugging about and weight.... gotta be done I guess! Will rummage me ol'house and see if there is a suitable daypac. If its too difficult, a simple rennaisance pad + digital cam will be enough for me

Say, does anyone know where the praha workshop will be held?

Cartoonfox: this is the golden sickle me thinks - has basic ameneties...and a local kitchen. Unlimited hotwater showers! Woohoo! Works for me: http://www.prague-hostels.cz/golden-sickle/hostel-golden-sickle.htm

- Koshime, I think its being held at the same place as the Travellers Hostel, thats what Layil has posted anyway, I only spotted it as I was looking to make a reservation to stay for 7 nights...

They rrreally should let us know where it will be held...

BTW:
Sculpture Exhibition by Ivan Klapez at:
The Crypt Gallery,
St Pancras Parish Church
Euston Road
NW1
10am - 7pm free entry, donations on the doors

www.klapez.freeuk.com (http://www.klapez.freeuk.com/index.html)

Ivan is from Croatia and his work is very dark, expressive, figurative, beautiful. He has inspired my drawing so much. He is an artist-in-residence where I work, and his knowledge of anatomy is amazing.
The subject of his work ranges from male and female torsos, to musicians, to a metamorphosis of pigeons and homeless people and off the street. If you have time, go take a look, you will be plesently surprised, and find thqt the Crypt is a perfect gallery space for his works.

Wow, the tension and drama in some of those poses is pretty incredible. Give some of those musicians a robe and a mean looking staff and they'd make an awesome wizard . Some of the portraits are straight Alien/Creature concepting.

Everyone whoes off to Prahahaha, hope you all enjoy it, and show em what our little humble Island can do. Who knows maybe the next workshop will be in the UK. :canadapatriot: and maybe even a UK one of these.

Cartoon where do you live in London? Might know of some bits to go to/see local to you.

From most places in London it only takes about 40 mins to get into central London, that's from where I am in the burbs. Once there there's plenty of places to go and check out. If your flat sharing then ask your flat mates what's local. Or just go for a walk and have a look around. Scouting out the local takeaway joints and supermarkets is always good.

hey acuna, i live in north harrow, 5 mins from north harrow station (metropolitan line). which is about 20 mins to central london (baker street)

yeah i went walking around yesterday and today. theres a lot of cafe's and resturants here. indian, chinese, turkish... plus good old pizza too ^-^
i know theres a bowling alley 5 mins from me too, dunno how good it is. but i dont think theres much else except mabye a park or two. it's a nice area though.

anyway, if anyone feels like going out for a few drinks, coffee, ice cream, fish and chips, burger king, etc etc ^-^ give me a call and i'll come out, 07866021823

otherwise i'll just stay in and work on my thunderdome ^-^

Hey kids!

Well, Badger, Chi, it looks like we're booked in with Cai for the 19th till the 25th. If I still go on the 18th it looks like I'll be sorted.

Haven't sorted flights yet - will take a look online today.

Yeah, I know it doesn't seem like great idea emailing the credit card - really not sure why they don't just use paypal like they did every other time! But anyway, I just did it. Figure it's not much more dangerous than flashing it round in public with no more protection in 90% of instances than a scribble which nobody even checks, or say leaving it at the pub like I did two weeks ago ;)
