Yeah, kinda looks like a penguin with big wings rather than a cormoran :/ Should have spent more time getting the shape right. The orange on the wings is supposed to represent strong backlight and the transparency of the wings, but dunno if it works..

The orange on the wings is great, its subtle enough that it makes it realistic, really the only thing is the shape. but personally i've always found birds hard to draw :P

ZK... WOW! you did THAT with a mouse?!

Oregano... WHEW very beautiful. nice rendering. did u pick the hues from the reference too or u colour it yourself? very nicely done.

Helzer... very neat stuff man. love the technique. and i really like the odd ratio of the image size. very kool.

Defunct... awesome colours. great setting. nice penguin lol.

Young Paddy.... really neat. like the strokes. black and white fits this theme really well.

http://www.mattksmith.com/Fisherman.jpg

My favorites are Helzer's and Oregano's.

Helzer: I really love that texture.

Oregano: Great colors and great scenary. One picky comment thoough. Add alittle reflection under the finsher man, right now it looks like he is flying and about to crash into the water.

Artistanbul: 2nd piece i really like the style and the look of it. The fisherman looks like he is going ot break his rod in 2. Poor guy must be having a bad day fishing.

Dixon: Nice colors and nice painterly techinque, though I dont think it is one of your better ones. The face just bothers me alittle.

zkreso: I like the lonely mood of it. It actually looks like you use real water color for certain parts of it.

Hi Osmus.

I generally don't give crits but since you ask, then I will do my duty to dish it.

One of the reasons oregano succeeds (in my opinion) is that he has chosen a color palette. In this case a warm one...almost limited to various values and temperatures of orange. It brings a sense of harmony and balance to the whole composition.

Your piece, in comparison, in a literal (or perhaps symbolic) interpretation: grass is green, sky is blue, roses are red, etc. I can go at lengths with this issue, but in short the solution can be one of two things:

A. Chose a limited color palette like oregano. And don't confuse limited with simple. Many masters have used limited palettes.

B. Use the principle of color repeat. Basically it is this: Once a color is used, it must be applied throughout the entire painting, whether in small amounts or large. For instance, in Dixon's painting one will noticed how he applied blue in many areas of the painting not just the sky. One can see it in the rim of the hat, alongside the cheek, the beard, etc. It ties the composition together.

Anyhow, that's enough out of me. Hope this helps.

Helzer

I've noticed that though all of the entries are excellent and many are beautiful, the focus is less often the character. More often the (breathtaking) landscapes dominate the canvas. Not a criticism really just a curiosity.

i remember these books (when i was a kid) from a japanese drawer wich would draw huge detailed landscapes and people in it. so this is kinda an imitation. straight brush pen ink and some pencil construction lines recoloured in ps

DV8 u make me sick! 2 mins?! bah. wish i had that kinda skill. i dont suck i know that but if i had that speed i could suck a lot less haha.

the significant other pic is cool. looks like she had some fun with it

YeeWu... dont see any issues with this. i like the monocolour thing goin on inside the b/w image. keep it up.

Brandish... nice work as per usual. love the scenery.

as for the fact that most are studying the landscape rather than the character.. thats true, but still brings the whole thing together. i myself didnt even look this morn to see if it was a char concept or a scenery/char concept. but either way everyone seems to get the point. :chug:

good stuff everybody. here's my thing for today... probably about 3 hours work, with the pencils and inks done during lecture. haven't contributed to dsg in quite some time, but hopefully i will be able to do so more often.

you know, i had a book as a small child that was about the cormorant and something or other, probably something to do with cheese dip. but the one thing that really stuck with me was the way they had their throats bound so that they couldn't swallow the fish they catch. i wonder if that book is still at me mum's.

Hey folks,

Wow, thanks for all of the comments today. I didn't think the piece was that great :hmm: But there-in lies a lesson about perception and how we see our own stuff.

Ah, a couple of people asked about it or made comments...

Matt: You are right about the reflection - I noticed that immediately after posting, but didn't have the time to put it in.

JABAJAWOOLU: to answer your question, yes :D I did my best to eye-ball the colors on the ref photo, but I did use the color picker here and there. I was tyring reproduce them as naturally as possible - in other words I was trying to avoid using the color picker, but didn't see a problem doing it where I felt it was needed. I'll post the reference picture underneath the painting so you can compare what I did against the photograph.

xbiten: Any tips I want to share? Um, chew your food :D Seriously, the only thing I did was a landscape study, everything was there, I just worked at interpeting it. If there is anything specific you would like to know, just ask.

I think that's it for the moment. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Cheers,
~Oreg.

PS - I recall that the comerants (I *just know* I misspelled that...) get something like one fish for every 7 or 9 they catch. I do not recall where I learned that tho.

Great work from everyone today. It's an idea to draw that definitely has... strength--if that makes any sense.

My favourite would have to be Helzer's. The textures in that are amazing, and bring a sense of life. I can feel the rock, and sense of the dewy grass. Amazing work.
