April 22nd, 2004, 08:24 AM
hey cotron, i know we are both at vcu, so we have no excuse, other than school work and the fact that being a security guard at johnson keeps me busy. we should hook up. metalwinds would be down for it and how bout your boy blankslatejoe?
April 23rd, 2004, 03:39 PM
I'm sure we could work something out, and joe's always down for art stuff. we're usually at the model sessions in the pollak building on tuesdays and thursdays, if you wanna draw there... drop me an email and lemme know what you think.
April 23rd, 2004, 04:24 PM
yeah man those sessions work but i havent had the money to go to those in a while. if i can get some cash then its on, ill let you know.
April 27th, 2004, 12:55 PM
we're going tonight, it's only 3 bucks.... 3 bucks! for 3 hours of decent drawing time. you'll probably recognize us if you go there, we're the only young people in there.
also, anyone from richmond goin to austin in june? me and joe are..
April 27th, 2004, 07:08 PM
thats 3 bucks i dont have at the moment unfortunately. me and metalwinds are going for sure. maybe a carpool or flying together method is in order.
April 28th, 2004, 08:02 PM
Cool, we should definitely get together and shoot the shit before then, Joe and I've got our plane tix... we're flying out of BWI on the 17th, we haven't figured out our hotel situation yet.
April 28th, 2004, 11:18 PM
cool man, drop em a line sometime and let me know the specs, i cant believe it has taken us this long to meet up. how much were your plane tickets? maybe we could all fly together? share hotel? make it cheaper and that way we all know someone.
May 21st, 2004, 04:19 PM
hotel room = reserved. it seems we are go for launch.
Meta, the group is trying to get together to go location-draw early next week. you interested?

chudtza, man that would be cool to meet up with you and any of your friends. anytime you want to come by man you can chill at my apartment and me and you and metalwinds and whoever will draw our asses off. just drop me a pm and ill hook you up with my numbers.
June 2nd, 2004, 06:25 PM
seriously though, me, cotron, meta and medalwinds have been trying to meet and draw. There are open model drawing sessions here for 3-5bucks a night twice a week, and they FINALLY TURNED ON THE AIR CONDITIONING!
Good variety of models and nice people. Most of the artists are older alumni, so there's a definite generation mix going on.
June 3rd, 2004, 07:33 PM
apartment drawing deal would be sweet.. just to be able to associate.. im not of age to do model drawin til november though. and dont get too excited half these girls are lesbians.. and i dont really have plans to continue association with many of them.. but im sure they wouldnt be hard to track down over at vcu come august. i have time mid june and mid july and late august to do random things.. i will see about getting a pm out to u guys sometime soon. - ry
June 7th, 2004, 02:42 PM
just thought id make an appearance.. . .im always up for drawing. meta, where have you been. ...stop working so much you
June 10th, 2004, 01:11 PM
I may have a day or two available from the 28th of June to the 3rd of July.. and only an hour from Richmond.. so theres nothing absurd at all with a day trip.. if u can even call it that. - ry
June 20th, 2004, 03:34 PM
Haven't posted in forever, but still doing illustration.
I'd like to come out to Pollack to figure draw sometime.
Curious how TX went also. Frustrating not to have money to go.
June 22nd, 2004, 11:41 AM
hi... just another virginian artist. i wont be in VA for about a month but when i come back, i'll be down to draw whenever. probably moving to richmond soon too.
June 23rd, 2004, 12:44 PM
well flex when you are back it is on.
June 23rd, 2004, 06:12 PM
workshop= unbelievable. I cannot even begin to describe it. it was just beyond everything I thought it would be.
July 6th, 2004, 08:16 AM
This Thursday (July 8th) are you guys meeting up for the live model @ Pollack? Other than materials, do I need to bring some cash? oh and what time? Is it too hot in there? Not having AC has been killing me.
I need to start doing more life drawings, I'm getting rusty.
July 6th, 2004, 10:41 AM
Hey- I won't be able to come, I've been in the Illustration Academy for the past month or so, and our lifedrawing is at the same time as the Pollak sessions...but regardless, you should go anyway, it's good practice. It's 3-5 bucks a night, the heat shouldn't be too much of a factor, but I'd wear shorts... it goes from 6:30-9:30 in room 321. I'll be showing up in about two weeks to draw there, I miss it.
July 6th, 2004, 11:33 PM
That Pollak life drawing sounds great. 5 bucks for 3 hours is a steal. Have fun.
July 10th, 2004, 09:44 PM
hey guys - last i went to the model sessions, they had fixed the AC. It's quite pleasant in there now.
July 19th, 2004, 07:54 PM
Blankslate and i got together to draw up here in northern VA (reston) the other day. It was a nice little outting. If ever you cats are in the area and wanna draw, hit a brotha up!
How come all u punks are in richmond? u know northern VA's where its at!
July 19th, 2004, 09:14 PM
you know it, Dahs! Crazy richmond kids...
July 27th, 2004, 09:10 AM
Man I never would have thought I would be classified as a Richmond kid.
Born in Fairfax, Go to D.C and NOVA at least once a week.
Richmond is a trap. Came here for school and can't escape.
at least I have Victorian houses to sketch.
But there is something I've been wanting to do down here for awhile.
Charles Vess lives in Abingdon VA and is a VCU alumni, from what I understand he does a talk on the origins of fantasy art. Would there be enough interest down here to put on a ConceptArt like lecture get together with Vess as speaker?
Pure selfishness for me. I want to hear him talk. But it would be cool to get people together on the East Coast.
Just putting a feeler out there to gauge interest..haven't made any connections yet.
July 27th, 2004, 12:34 PM
Actually, that's kinda funny. I'm friends with Vess' niece, who graduated from VCU's art dept a few years back. I'm not sure if Vess is still in the area, and I haven't talked to the niece in awhile, but I can hunt down her email and see if she thinks it'd be possible to get him to talk.
I'm not sure how 'social' Vess is though, she doesn't talk too much about him.
Cotron, I'm pretty sure you've met the niece at least once too (She's a pal of me and DoomAndy).. I don't know if the Vess link ever came up in a conversation though.
July 27th, 2004, 12:43 PM
heh, a family connection...hmm.
Well I had read somewhere that he had done a couple of slideshows on fantasy illustration. Also pretty sure he still lives in Abingdon, VA.
I have his email but have holded off in sending him anything, until, I built up enough interest.A long time ago I met him and we talked about Shakespeare illustrations, he knows his stuff.
I did though email Jason Manley asking if he wanted any official ConceptArt.org connection with this.
I work at the VMFA, and I was thinking of tying the Vess lecture with the Durer exhibit coming in October till January. I'm sure I could get a behind the scenes tour arranged for CA.org members.
That gives us a 4 month window to work in. Hopefully he could be available one weekend.
Also Donato Ginacola visited VCU once and gave a talk. I know he lives in Brooklyn, but that talk was amazing and gave me the guts to start putting my portfolio out there. Not sure of his connection or why he came down, but I want to look into that also.
And one of my English teachers at VCU teaches a class on sequential art and has written for DC comics. Maybe him also....
Okay I'm just brainstorming here... But I think this could be a really cool little thing.
July 27th, 2004, 02:03 PM
ha, the coincidences Nekokaiju!
First off, you work at the VFMA? You might know an ex girlfriend of mine, steph, who works there as an intern. She's a cool chick, say hello to her for me if you know her. Also, you might have seen my sister, at an event for kids a few days ago that somehow involved Degas. My sister was dancing ballet for something there...
I was there when donato came, but missed the lecture..
Also, George Pratt teaches at VCU, he might be willing to lecture too.
Who was the English teacher you mentioned?
July 27th, 2004, 05:23 PM
I have done about...$#!T for the past 6 months..
So I would be honored to join your cult, club, org....
Blank Slate has talked to me a few times to get some figure drawing time...
I mentioned to him that I was going to teach a figure drawing class in Manass Hole.....but that fell through....Ah but I might have good news...
They organization asked if I wanted to teach the class again for this fall....and I agreed.....however in order to make the class a posibility I need students or fellow artists to actualy want to take part....
we will see....I am also a alum of Virgicomwealt Univ
Nice to meet usss
July 27th, 2004, 08:00 PM
EVREN! About dang time you showed up again!
Get a sketchbook going on here and start participating more often! Sorry to hear you haven't been working much in the past 6 months. I totally can understand though, I've been in a slump myself the past few weeks and have only a few sketches to show for it.
July 27th, 2004, 09:32 PM
We've had a couple of people in ECAU (http://www.ecau.net) down in VA trying to hook up and do stuff for the last few months. Maybe you could bump heads and see what happens.
July 28th, 2004, 01:06 PM
I always wanted to do one on this site but I never knew the requirements to start one.....
So how do I start one?
I finally cleaned off my art space so I think I will start using it again...
July 28th, 2004, 01:25 PM
Does this description of the class sound ok....
A study of the human form
This is a fundamental class for all serious artists. To learn the fluid
lines and angles of the human form we will begin with quick 5 minute
sketches of the live model to warm up. Rotating poses for sketches will
help ready our hand eye coordination for the next step of drawing 15
minute poses. The longer poses at the end of the session will build the
confidence to study form, shadows, shapes and planes of the human body.
I only have one day to adjust as neccesary
August 11th, 2004, 12:04 PM
so mr blankslate told me there was a thread called virginia artist unite and i have finally seen it. I will check in here every now and then to see what everyoen has to say. I hope we all can get together and throw down art style sometime.
August 12th, 2004, 11:06 AM
Hey,,, I have an Idea....that is if everybody can make it....I was thinking that the Va squad could meet next month down in Richmond for first Friday...
What you all think?
August 12th, 2004, 11:14 PM
lets do it. im down
August 12th, 2004, 11:50 PM
yar, get togethers are good
August 13th, 2004, 03:27 PM
Freakn aswome....there are still a few other blokes that have yet to reply....
but they will assimalate soon enough...
the only other question is where to meet.....I put my vote in for Velocity Comics a little before the gallerys open, so we can meet and greet....and maybe pick up some good books....
August 17th, 2004, 02:11 PM
first friday meet-up sounds great... i ll be there.
i'm in richmond for the next week or so. hit me up if anyone is trying to draw with me.
August 17th, 2004, 03:15 PM
id be up for that... im not positive I'll be able to make it, but I'm gonna try my derndest to!
I might have a car by then, so that would help lots.
August 19th, 2004, 04:30 PM
Hey if anybody can't get a ride down to richmond for Sept first friday....maybe we could get some people to volunteer carpooling detail....
I know where blankslate resides so if he ain't got no car...I do
August 19th, 2004, 09:54 PM
he don't. thanks for the offer, evren, I very well may take you up on it. I know Dahsramu is in our area as well and some others too maybe..
I'd be more than willing to throw in some gas money to get to the richmond-y land of richmond.
August 20th, 2004, 12:55 AM
If anybody else might need a ride let your wants be known.....so that each member with wheels and a kind heart would be willing to lend a seat to other unfortunate souls
Carpooling is fun....ADult Swim!
August 20th, 2004, 06:20 AM
damn i have been from the boards too long. i want in on whatever is going down and i know our boy metalwinds will too. meeting at velocity on first friday is a good idea. man i cant wait. my cell is 404 312 7440 so hit me up if anyone has anything they need, i live in a hotel and have an extra bed, i know that sounds creepy but it is an invite for someone to stay if needed. just let me know. if you call, please introduce yourself right after i pick up for i scare easily.
lets do this ish guys.
August 20th, 2004, 02:07 PM
so I think that is 4 people so far....and I think Velocity is the place where its at..
August 27th, 2004, 03:23 PM
I will meet you guys on first friday too. I need to get out of the house and check out the art anyway and who better to do it with than other virginia artist? What time are we meeting?
August 27th, 2004, 11:41 PM

September 3rd, 2004, 05:16 PM

September 3rd, 2004, 05:30 PM

September 12th, 2004, 10:38 PM
So did anyone attend the Comic convention this weekend in baltimore if so....
what happened??....I have to work every weekend, so I wasn't able to attend..
September 13th, 2004, 07:32 AM
Hey sorry I missed hanging out for First Friday.
I was in Atlanta for DragonCon, shopping my portfolio around.
I met up with Vess and he seemed cool about coming to Richmond to give a talk on the origins of fantasy art to us guys. I need to email him and hopefully get it a reality.
Also saw Targete, you need to see his oils in person, very interesting.
Not too many AD's there this year and apparently I need pirates in my portfolio. But still managed to make some decent contacts.
(Anyone going to SPX in Oct?)
September 13th, 2004, 01:51 PM
actually.... where is spx... bethesda, right? or silverspring?
I might go... I've always wanted to..
September 17th, 2004, 10:27 PM
 I enjoy life drawing also, there is a session in williamsburg on thurs evenings at W&M college sponsered by the art club. Are there any in the Richmond area? I am especially interested in 30-60 minute poses. I fear that with the organizers of the local session working in oil paint they prefer 2 hour poses which are getting a little dull."nude swallowed by sofa" is getting to be a common name for many of my pieces.:)
September 17th, 2004, 10:39 PM
the sessions in richmond are similar, or at least they were back when I lived there... They would start with about 10 or so 60 second poses, then a 2 hour one.
September 19th, 2004, 12:26 AM
Yoo people. Maybe we should plan a get together sometime in D.C. :dur: Lol I'm just too lazy to get my ass down to richmond.
September 19th, 2004, 03:10 AM
hey dako, anytime you wanna meet and go draw, I might be up for it. Me, Jack Frost and Dahsramu are all in Northern VA...
September 19th, 2004, 06:17 PM
hmmmm, i might have to make it to one of these things, im in fairfax. we have drawing sessions here at mythic, but would be cool to meet up with some VCU'ers. I went there freshman year.
September 19th, 2004, 08:40 PM
ben ben ben ben ben.... you're just on all these forums, aren't you?
Why the heck aren't we meeting up and drawing then?
September 23rd, 2004, 10:10 PM
Hey first friday is coming up once again.....I know I few people that wanted to go last time but couldn't, plus we could have a drawing session..
September 23rd, 2004, 10:13 PM
i'm there, i m pretty sure i can make it this time.
i'll be in northern va this weekend if any one wants to meet up and draw.
September 30th, 2004, 03:31 PM
hey flex....I will be there all afternoon....that would be great if you can make it this time....Velocity comics closes at 6 on friday so if anybody has any new suggestions on where to meet that would be great, and I am going to bring a pad to draw in...
October 1st, 2004, 07:01 AM

October 5th, 2004, 12:28 PM

October 5th, 2004, 12:30 PM
I just moved here to Norfolk...
October 5th, 2004, 03:50 PM
wow, it's about time we got someone from southern VA to pop up, welcome to VA JoshuatheJames... why'd you move to norfolk, of all places?
guess one: military?
Also, man, spx was supposed to be really cool this year; a few buddies had tables this year, so I really should have gone to say hi....
October 5th, 2004, 10:36 PM
wow, i'd seen your name on these forums all over the place joshua, but had seen very little of your actual work.. I just checked your portfolio thread thing here on conceptart. Awesome stuff man!
There's a bunch of VA-ers on here, but most of us are in the Richmond area and Northern Va areas, with scattering between. I don't know of anyone else who is in the Norfolk/Va beach area, with the exception of Rielly B, who needs get off his butt and start posting more on here.
Anyway, we've been trying to meet up every once and awhile in richmond for gallery walking, chatting, sketching, etc.
October 5th, 2004, 10:57 PM
I'll get in on this, next time you all get together let me know, i'll do my best to make it.
October 6th, 2004, 12:29 AM
What up guys, I'm in Fredericksburg (mid point betw DC and richmond). I'm down for any kind of meetups that I can make it out to. I'm going to be workin days soon so I should have some nights free to make it out somewhere.
Also, I've been looking for figure drawing sessions, but nothing going on around where I'm at.. I know there's some happening in Richmond, but dont know the times and places. If there's anywhere up in Northern VA too that someone knows about let me know.
October 6th, 2004, 12:58 AM
the ones in richmond *used* to be run one tuesdays and thursday nights, from 6pm to 9:30ish in Room 223 of the Pollack Building, located on 3500 Harrison St, in the Fan district off exit 78 of I-95.
Cost is 5-6 bucks MAX (usually 3-4)
Dang. From memory.
Cody, let know where I messed that up? (He'd know if they changed times/rooms/pickedthebuildingupandmovedittoadifferentmorecorre ctstreetaddress)
As for NOVA, the Torpedo Factory in Old Town, Alex. has an open session, but it's like 18 bucks a night. That's just insane.
I -JUST- today found out about another open-drawing group up here in NOVA, but they actually haven't started up yet. I'll let you guys know once I find out more.
October 10th, 2004, 01:41 AM
Another Richmonder here. I havent posted anything on CA cause I suck. Maybe sometime soonish. Im a VCU student. Just transferred to art after 5 semesters of being a music major. Liking this much more. Im actually from Arlington so I'm in the NOVA area as well kind of often. I really need to start going to those VCU figure sessions again... if theyre still on tues and thurs?
October 11th, 2004, 01:55 PM

October 13th, 2004, 11:06 PM

Hey I was surprised to see some southern VA representation too. I'm over here in Portsmouth.
As an FYI to you Southern Virginians, there's a weekly model session at the Eastern Shore Chapel and I THINK it's on Saturday mornings. I'd be going to it if I had a car. There's an entry fee of $7... I can find out more info on it if you want, just let me know.
December 1st, 2004, 06:53 PM
first friday is in a few days... whos going to be there?
December 1st, 2004, 10:49 PM
I will be. I am driving the motorcycle down friday after work.
January 21st, 2005, 03:15 PM
AVAST YE SCURVY DOGS!
Metalwinds and I have been talking a lot about getting a sketch night together, and doing it soon. We're thinking Sunday nights, and most likely hosting it at one of our apartments or something, maybe going out and drawing at a coffee shop... maybe pooling our money together and getting a model too. Regardless, I think we need a place for VA people to get together on a regular (weekly?) basis to draw and shoot the shit, keeping us all motivated to make awesome art. I'm posting to ask opinions and to see who's interested, I want to start this soon.
Ideas? Anyone? Beuller?
January 21st, 2005, 03:30 PM
yarr..... i would be up fer that, totally. but all things considered, i be not in the state no longer yarrr..
January 21st, 2005, 08:40 PM
omg cotron, I can't stop laughing that you have me as your icon. LOOOL
anyway, i am up for it. I was gonna try to get together with JoshuaThe James this weekend anyway. Maybe we VA artists can make a mass exodus down to richmondOOOO.
If Flex Mathewz is still alive (haven't seen him signed on since the workshop) Maybe he will wanna go with me since we live like 5 min away now.
January 21st, 2005, 11:15 PM
'Sposed to be some terrible shitty weather this weekend, so I wasn't planning on anyone wanting to hang. But let me know what youse guys are up to regardless//
ps- ben, it's all the rage to use other people's faces as your avatars... :perv:
January 21st, 2005, 11:35 PM
Yo I probably wont be able to make it this weekend but I am definitely down for hitting up with you guys as much as work and my crappy car will allow it. I live in fredericksburg so I'd be on the way for anyone coming from fairfax *triple wink that looks more like something is in my eye*.
January 31st, 2005, 11:23 AM
Hey guys. What a good idea. I live in Fairfax (grew up in Reston) and would love to participate. I have a wfie and kid and go to school, so time isn't always on my side, but I'd love to meet some local artists to try to connect with the community. I am tired of being the only artist I know!
January 31st, 2005, 11:33 AM
Cool, what does everyone's weekend look like? Maybe we can meet up and hang out.... it's first friday this weekend, maybe we could hang out and draw. Or do something on Sunday. I wanna set my social butterfly freeeee!!
January 31st, 2005, 11:34 AM
i'm in fairfax now. so anyone in northern va who wants to hang out and draw, i'm down. i've been trying to make it down to richmond the last few weeks but the weather has been really shitty. i will definately make it down there next week, if weather permits.
January 31st, 2005, 11:37 AM
I'd be willing to drive up north if need be, too...
February 3rd, 2005, 11:34 AM
northern va sketch group would be nice. we have easy access to a zoo and plenty of museums. plus it would be alot easier for more me if we can get something regular going up here. i know some maryland ca.orgers will be down to meet up too. just a thought.
edit* cody, you re avatar is money.
February 3rd, 2005, 12:08 PM
Sounds good Flex. You're right about the museums, that's a wealth that should be tapped! I'm definitely down.
February 3rd, 2005, 12:16 PM
so if there's gonna be something that happens up north, when will it take place? this sunday might be good for me...
we could alternate weeks, too.. have a richmond thing one week, northern va the next. that would be noice.
February 4th, 2005, 09:31 AM
alternating weeks would be great. this sunday is good for me too (no work). we can meet up at my house, i live right next to the dunn loring metro stop. pm if anyone else is interested.
February 4th, 2005, 11:58 AM
pat- awesome, I'll give you a call tomorrow about it. is that metro stop new? what line is it on?
I'll call up danny and chris and the other VA homies that might miss this post
February 5th, 2005, 03:58 AM
its on the orange line, its right before the vienna stop going away from dc.
ben (poopinmymouth) says he can make it too.
February 5th, 2005, 12:57 PM
Hell yeah KNEEGROWZ, can't wait
February 6th, 2005, 01:21 AM
cool, what time/where you guys wanna git together? I think my girl might make the trek with me. i haven't been in touch w/ anyone from richmond, been painting all afternoon...
February 6th, 2005, 01:55 AM
the zoo is open from 10-4:30. so if we meet up around 1 or 2, that should give us some time to get some drawing in. ben said he can meet up later, around 4 or 5. we can figure it out from there. call me anytime tonight or tomorrow... 703 864 4323
February 9th, 2005, 08:17 PM
hey people I would love to also join this merry group.....what are the exact details for this sunday? I am currntley based in Tysons Corner
February 9th, 2005, 08:35 PM
Chris Anderson and I will be moving to Fairfax within a week and a half.
Chris and his wife will be there about 6 days earlier than I...
February 9th, 2005, 08:56 PM
cool beans,,,,will you be staying with them?
February 10th, 2005, 01:14 PM
So how did the gathering go this past weekend? I'm still bitter I wasn't able to make it. Did you guys go to the zoo?
February 12th, 2005, 07:45 PM
Wait...did your guys meet already happen....damn did I miss the boat on this?
February 18th, 2005, 09:18 AM
has 2 weeks passed already? whats the deal for this sunday? getting together to draw again?
February 18th, 2005, 10:32 AM
Yes, I think we're still trying to get together, doing something in Richmond this time... Metalwinds and Metaphysiks are both hanging out. I don't have a clue as to what we should do when we do hang out, though. :perv:
anyone else interested in hanging out down in the dirty souf?
February 18th, 2005, 12:11 PM
oh yeah- if anyone in the area is interested, there's a show at Nanci Raygun this saturday night, the theme is zombies and everything's painted on skateboards- here's the flyer (i'm gonna be in the show but I got in on it too late to be on the flyer)
should be fun, there'll be music and stuff.
February 22nd, 2005, 01:47 AM
hey if any body is doing anything else up in northern va please hit me up ....I am so borred
March 15th, 2005, 05:41 PM
Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone might be up for a northern VA sketchgroup. I'd be the young guy in the group but I'm sure I could learn tons from you all. Anyway I was at Plaza today and I could've sworn I saw you flex but I wasn't sure and I was in a huge rush. I'll be going there more regularly when I have time. But anyway just wondering if anyone would wanna sketch sometime, get back to me if so. I'm free on weekends and I have next week off for springbreak. So anytime then would be good.
March 15th, 2005, 06:42 PM
Hey guys, a heads up...
Next Monday, Jon Foster's comin to do a demo and lecture, 3pm-6pm at the Engineering Building's auditorium. Tuesday, he's doing a digital demo at franklin terrace.. same time I think. The engineering building is by Main and Belvidere streets in Richmond, and franklin terrace is just a couple blocks from there.
March 15th, 2005, 06:46 PM
you lucky bastards...
March 16th, 2005, 12:36 AM
cody, thats amazing....how did vcu manage that?...was that a little bit of george pratt influence....and can alumni go?
tell us more...
dakoscwash nice to meet you...I have missed the hanging's out that others have done...but maybe soon va'ers could do something....it think everyone pms each other
March 16th, 2005, 12:59 AM
Evren- Yeah, Pratt got him to come down. Me and Danny asked im if he'd be interested at the workshop in SF, but it's largely George's influence :)
It's open to anyone, so tell people who are interested. I hope there's a good turnout... I'll get a copy of the poster to put up in here, it has more info.
I'll be starting the first day of my new job the day foster comes, so I'm gonna miss a good portion of the demo :(
March 16th, 2005, 08:32 AM
Wow, If I can get myself down to richmond by Monday I will definitely go.
March 16th, 2005, 11:48 PM
Keepiru: From Richmond, born and raised...
Jon Foster....You lucky ducks! Can I be part of the cool club?
Lol, I guess not, stuck in Atlanta where the playas play and the artists scrounge out a living the best way they can, reading these posts makes me nostalgic for my roots.
You guys should start a sketch thread, in the name of ugly Arthur Ashe statues, Sabrina Squire, Carytown, VCU, and the Hollywood Cemetary (the things I miss most)...Virginia is for lovers, yo!
March 17th, 2005, 04:49 PM
I think post sketches in the conceptart forums for sketchs should be fine....but it might be intresting to double post any images that we do as a group, at local meets
Keepiru, ofcourse you can be apart....but you should really get involved in the atlanta group..
March 17th, 2005, 05:20 PM
Yeah that sounds cool. I was wondering, is there a train from arlington/d.c. area to richmond? I reaaaally want to go monday but so far have no way of getting down there.
March 17th, 2005, 06:16 PM
you can take greyhound from multiple locations around northern va/DCfor about 20-25 bucks, depending on where you start. Takes about 3 hours, 4 if traffic is bad, the buses run pretty regularly though.
youd have to have some way of getting from the richmond greyhound station to VCU though.
I -think- there is a train too, but im not sure where the stations are and I've heard it's closer to 30-40 bucks a ticket, if not more.
im envious of all you guys, enjoy the lecture!
March 18th, 2005, 05:51 PM
Here's the poster w/ street addresses on em:
edit- yeah joe there's an amtrak that runs down to here, it goes to staples mill road, but there's no city bus that would take you back to vcu (i think). you could take a taxi for about 5 bucks from the greyhound to campus, it's not far, or you can look up bus schedules at www.ridegrtc.com- the greyhound station is on Boulevard, by the Diamond. Hope that's of some help
March 18th, 2005, 09:56 PM
fucking awesome... i dont have to work those days. i guess i ll see you guys in richmond.
March 18th, 2005, 11:02 PM
Wow, flex in all his generosity has offered me a ride! kd;adsfj I guess I'll see you guys there if all goes accordingly. = i can die happy. [after richmond]
March 19th, 2005, 03:44 PM
I will be leaving work at aprox 1:00 pm...it will take about 1:30-1:45 minutes to get to richmond...if anybody else is on the way down...from 236 fairfax station I could give you a ride....
cody do people know where the business auditorium is?
March 19th, 2005, 04:17 PM
it's not the business audtiorium, it's the engineering auditorium, address is on the poster. I've never been there, so I don't know where it is in relaiton to the building. The main engineering building is on the corner of Main and Belvidere though.
March 19th, 2005, 06:24 PM
ha, thanks so much Mr Frost.! I was sort of kidding lol, Im not sure if there is technically an atlanta group, but weve organized some local sketch sessions in the past. Im just a little jealous!
You all better make sure to take some notes at the lecture!
March 20th, 2005, 09:05 PM
hey I was curious if I could crash on anybody's couch tomorrow night....I want to go to both events but I don't have enough money to gets a hotel room
poor starving artist
March 20th, 2005, 09:21 PM
Hmm I think both Pat and I are staying the night for tuesday. I'll see if I can arrange anything.
March 23rd, 2005, 01:46 PM
So how the demos go? I wanted to attend Tuesday's digital demo but couldn't get away from work.
March 23rd, 2005, 02:44 PM
The demos were amazing. Jon Foster is such a nice, modest guy. It was really cool to see how he achieved his textures with the pallette knife in his oil demo, and how he worked starting with the black and white sketch and layout in painter, then overlaying color in photoshop and going back to painter for finishing details in his digital demo. Thanks again Pat for the ride and letting me crash at your friends. And nice meeting all you people as well.
March 23rd, 2005, 08:52 PM
glad you guys got to the demo ok-
sorry I didn't get a chance to hang with you guys when you were down here, but any time you're in richmond, make sure to lemme know, we'll draw up a storm.
March 23rd, 2005, 09:37 PM
hey cody I was bumbed you didn't make it, cause you were so cool to inform us about it, we would never have known..
I had a great time too...hopefully all the video they shot and pictures they will post on vcu's card page
dako...is was good meeting you ....you have alot of talent and potential..
flex...thanx again for the place to sleep and your company...
March 23rd, 2005, 09:39 PM
I don't if any body in this group knows about this news flash but check out this link and get involved
April 9th, 2005, 10:37 AM
Yeah nice meeting you Evren, thanks.
Anyway I'm about to go to D.C. for all the cherry blossom crap. There's supposed to be some samurai armor and demonstrations of weapons and fighting and crap. I'm bored and it's free so that's where I'll be. Peace.
April 9th, 2005, 12:38 PM
i think that i am about... 2 hours from DC (in MD is where i am located)... so perhaps we could all meet up in DC (cotron, metalwinds, metaphysiks, blankslatejoe... the workshop crew....... yeah.) and roam the streets and museums....
perhaps sometime in the summer?
April 14th, 2005, 02:35 AM
I'm in VA too baby. Richmond. I'll be down to draw sometimes. Ill keep an eye on this thread.
May 3rd, 2005, 12:43 PM
I'm about to move to DC and get together with JtJ and ChrisAnderson. Anyone else around there who wants in?
May 4th, 2005, 08:55 AM
i want in. pm me or email me the details of this get together.
May 4th, 2005, 09:24 PM
Well, I got no "plans" as of yet. Hell, I haven't even even talked stuff out with Josh yet. I just know that we're gonna get out and do cool art stuff, and I figure the more, the merrier. I'm gonna be there in probly 3 weeks, and I figure JtJ and I (and probly Chris) will do stuff on weekends here and there, stuff like hitting up museums, zoos, having sketch nights, etc. We'll all be coming from Fairfax. Is that close enough to you? When the time draws near I'm sure we'll get down to specifics.
btw flex, you got some rockin' drawings. It'd be cool to see some stuff up close and personal. Cheers!
May 4th, 2005, 10:07 PM
can i hang out? i miss my artist friends :bashful:
May 5th, 2005, 09:56 PM
sure, cotron. If you're down with the DC, you're down with me!
May 9th, 2005, 11:23 PM
I'd be down if that's cool.
May 21st, 2005, 12:28 AM
Something the VA folks might be interested in. I only found out about it today myself. http://www.popmhan.com/bb/viewthread.php?tid=351

September 6th, 2005, 03:37 AM
Does anyone know of drawing classes in Northern Virginia? I'm interested in learning figure drawing, and am a newbie at it. I'd appreciate any referrals. Thanks.
September 7th, 2005, 09:53 PM
I have a couple of suggestions, the torpedo factory in Alexandria offers model sessions through its Art League, NOVA community college I believe might offer a class or two the same for George Mason, also I believe their is an artist comminty or several that have meetings and chip in to get a model....
I taught a figure drawing class at the local community arts center in Manassas, you could see which community art center is close to you and go from there, I know there is one also in Arlington
October 2nd, 2005, 05:59 PM
Anyone feel like going to the Woodley Park Zoo in D.C. one of these Saturdays? I haven't been there in ages.
October 12th, 2005, 03:39 AM
I live in fairfax. I would love to get together with anyone!!! anyone and draw. I don't know anyone besides Flex who draws and well.. he's always working it seems. I'm always at the starbucks at the pan am shopping center near the vienna/GMU metro... so come by prettty much anyday after 12 and sketch with me.
October 12th, 2005, 02:40 PM
i think everyone else in the area died or something.
October 12th, 2005, 03:12 PM
hey what happened to flex/cotron/metaphysiks/metalwinds? don't tell me i disappear for a year and everyone decides to bail VA?
well, I'm still around I guess. Are those figure drawing classes listed a little earlier still going on around here?
October 12th, 2005, 03:36 PM
ok well that's about 4 currently active, interested D.C. area members.
October 12th, 2005, 03:48 PM

October 12th, 2005, 10:33 PM
I'm moving from virginia to San Francisco in a little over a week or so... too bad I haven't gotten as many chances to hang out w/ you guys as I would have wanted, but that's what workshops are for, right?
also- end of the month, Barron Storey's talking @ VCU, anyone in hte area should definitely check that out... when I find out the exact day, I'll let you guys know.
October 13th, 2005, 12:52 AM
Yeah I wish I could've caught up with you more often Cody. I hope everything goes well for you in San Francisco.. seems like a good place to be to try and make some things happen.
Really I wish I could hang out more.. it would help if we were more centralized it would take me about an hour to get up to most of you guys. Working nights really sucks in that respect. If we could come up with a good time for a meet up a few weeks in advance, I should be able to get the day off.
October 14th, 2005, 07:14 PM
Thats aswome that you are making that happen cody, oh yeah how are the shirts coming or going?.....yeah I am in the area....i would be intrested in meeting up and doing something ....maybe the Baron Story thing...when ever it will be
October 18th, 2005, 09:39 PM

July 20th, 2006, 05:16 PM
Heya Evren :)
We should try to meet up to draw sometime. :)
July 26th, 2006, 03:20 PM
I live in Richmond. Im only 15 and in 10th grade though, and I dont have a car yet. I also want to go to VCU. What art courses do they have?
July 26th, 2006, 04:05 PM
they've got a lot, brian. VCU is considered the best public, as in statefunded, art school in the country. The problem is that it's relatively unknown because all the big art schools get the spotlight--places like Ringling and RISD... but those are all private, 40,000$ a year schools. VCU is a fraction of that.
They've got degrees in painting, illustration, video, sculpture, design, 3d modeling/animation, photography, fashion, interior design. Each of those departments has a ton of classes within them. The school doesn't have the budget of some of the bigger schools, but you'll get out what you put in..and I had a number of excellent professors there.
July 26th, 2006, 04:11 PM
I go to VCU currently, and yes, it is GRANDE in the spectrum of Art. We have great teachers and an awesome illustration program that's only getting better (no biast here, I promise). I'd thought I'd chime in here. I line in VA and go to school in the state. Didn't know all you guys where here to. So anyway, continue with the uniting and all. Maybe we could meet up and thrown down some pencils or something. Anybody around Richmond during the course of the school year?
July 26th, 2006, 04:22 PM
Thanks. I guess I'll continue painting, save up as much money, and hope for the best.
July 27th, 2006, 03:55 PM
couple friends and I will be in washington dc for a bit Saturday, visit some museums and stuff. We're probably arriving around 11AM and will be in the city till 3 or 4. lemme know if anyone's up for getting together to hangout and look at art and all that good stuff.
Visions I'm in Hampton VA, an hour from Richmond; I'm planning to go to 1st Friday in Richmond come september, maybe we'll meet up and lay some graphite down.
July 27th, 2006, 03:59 PM
Sounds sweet! We'll talk -
August 14th, 2006, 11:44 PM
Hey all. Im gonna be moving to VA in about a month and a half. Is this thing still on? I'll be in fairfax/south riding/dulles area..
August 14th, 2006, 11:50 PM
How about the national gallery of art sometime soon?
August 17th, 2006, 12:30 AM
I live in sterling but I'm going to school at Virginia Tech. I don't think there are any CA people from tech on here. or are you guys hiding???
August 17th, 2006, 02:42 AM
i live in fairfax at the moment. i go to the national gallery often. pm me if you have any plans.
August 22nd, 2006, 12:22 PM
Anyone interested in a VCU meetup? Im a first year illustration student and want to meet up with a few people! Too bad franklin terrace is under renovation, or I might see some of you guys around.
August 25th, 2006, 06:20 PM
Hey. I live around the Woodbridge/Dumfries area. Any members around here?
August 27th, 2006, 11:38 PM
i'm in richmond at vcu currently if anyone ever wants to get together
September 12th, 2006, 08:00 AM
Hey you VCU cats, we should meet up soon. If you guys aren't already involved, SOCA (Society of Communication Artists aka Illustration Club) is getting pretty active. Tonight Professor Megank is giving a demo at the Cabell Library @ 7. Come out, it'll be fun, and we can put faces with names. I'll be wearing the tie -
September 12th, 2006, 08:01 AM
BTW, it's in the basement of the library, just ask around -
September 22nd, 2006, 03:12 PM
I wanted to go to that! But I had class :[
What year are all of you guys at VCU?
September 29th, 2006, 12:41 PM
Hey guys, I've been doing the whole 'find a college' thing. I live in Chesapeake and I've never heard of VCU really. I'm going to check this out, because other than that I've been looking at anything from TCC (the community college) and CCAD in Ohio or Ringling....I'm not a big fan of VA, but I don't have a ton of money for big moves.
Anyway, anyone around Chespeake have a sketchgroup going?
October 24th, 2006, 02:50 PM
Let me know if you are looking for figurative models. I am a male model, and I live in the Richmond area. I am relatively new to modeling but have worked with McGuffey Center in Cville and with groups around Richmond. I can do afterwork session in and around Richmond. It seems there are a lot of artists here looking for open sessions. Perhaps you could organize your own.
I am already working with Lawrence Robinson, but if you want to start your own drawing sessions, we can work out some times and dates.

I'm in fairfax. I don't mind metroing into Dc to check out the musuems and draw. I'd love to meet ANY artist. I know nobody here in fairfax that does art.

I'd be up for something like that, it sounds like it'd be worth it to get the practice in
December 18th, 2006, 11:22 AM
BlackGuy: The national gallery is great. Let's have a meet up. It seems like theres a number of people who want to go. lets just set a date and do it.
December 18th, 2006, 03:45 PM
I have been searching this site for other people in the area. I looked at this particular thread before but all of the postings were very old so I thought no one here was interested in a Sketch Group in the DC metro area. I am down for meeting up on occasion. I work during the week so weekends are best for me.
COME ON lets get something going. I to am fairly new to the area and looking for other artist. I find that when you work with other artist it makes you a better artist. So we would have nothing to lose buy forming a sketch group.
If you guys are willing I am down.
December 18th, 2006, 05:41 PM
since the Baltimore group is also talking about meeting up at the national gallery sometime, maybe we should just combine the groups and meet together?
December 19th, 2006, 02:39 AM
Im down for weekend things. Obviously not this weekend as christmas will take up most of my time. But I will be back during the next week so scheduleuerueruerue.
December 19th, 2006, 09:48 AM
As I know it is the holidays obviously this week end is out next week end is New Years week end. So I am Guessing the best time may be Jan. 06, 2007 which is a Saturday might as well kick the new years off sketching. we will have to decide on a meeting place though. Some place we can all agree on, as I know not everyone has a car so metro accessible if possible. I am pretty flexible about this. We will also need a designated time to meet. I would say we should all meet at noon.
The national gallery sounds nice BlackGuy.
Let me know what you guys think.
December 19th, 2006, 06:23 PM
that sounds good.
January 3rd, 2007, 02:25 PM
Are we still on for the National Gallery on Sat. Please Let me know if anyone is interested. I am asking because I do not want to show up and be the only one there. We can make a sketch group work if we can get a consensus on when and where to meet . We all would need to make a commitment to do this. I am so gung ho about this.
So guys lets get it together and do this. Also if Sat does not work please state a date and time more suitable to your schedules.
It is all about the ART.
January 3rd, 2007, 06:47 PM
sat works for me
January 3rd, 2007, 06:48 PM
I think Sat will work for me. Although I may have a funeral to go to but I don't know yet.
January 3rd, 2007, 10:55 PM
BlackGuy>A funeral? that may be a little more important.
I guess we will know by Friday who will be able to come. If i get a commitment from at least one person I will be there. Just do not want to be there by myself, art is just more fun in a group setting.
We will see what happens.
January 5th, 2007, 12:54 PM

January 5th, 2007, 08:54 PM

January 6th, 2007, 09:17 PM
sorry I couldn't make it guys, how'd it go?
January 6th, 2007, 09:56 PM
Yes Tet and I went it was cool. We hung out walked through the Gallery talked about art found the Diner, gift shop, and cafeteria. That National Gallery is awesome. We decided that we may start meeting and sketching at different gallery each time we decide to meet. There are a lot of freebies in DC.
Oh yeah we did some sketching too. I will post what I did later, I did not get as much done as I would have liked to because we toured the Gallery because this was our first time there. There was some cool a$$ Rembrandt etchings there I was Awe struck to say the least. I saw the type of quality work that is achievable when there are no distractions like TV, Video games, and so forth. I feel very much inspired.
Maybe next time we will have a larger group. But if not I will still go. You must join us next time.
January 7th, 2007, 12:45 AM
yeah I'm down for that. Let me know when you guys are tryin to go again
January 8th, 2007, 10:21 PM

I think a trip to the Zoo is in order, start drawing those animals from life.
September 23rd, 2007, 01:19 AM
This Monday they are going to allow artists to stay after hours at the BODIES exhibition to draw from the specimens, after the crowds of non-artsy-types go home. Does this exhibition even get crowded? I haven't gone yet. But I suppose this would be the best day to go. Anyone up for scraping a sketch group together? Short notice I know but I just read about it. I'll be driving up from Richmond.
Monday September 24th 7pm-10pm in Rosslyn. $30.
all info found at http://www.bodiestheexhibition.com/intro.html
the FAQ states no photography allowed.
November 18th, 2007, 03:36 PM

November 19th, 2007, 01:44 PM
I gotta go back up to DC to see the Turner exhibit at the National Gallery. I'll time my visit to coincide with yours if we get a few people meeting up.
November 20th, 2007, 07:18 PM
hiya burtz, blackguy,
thanks for the responses... i will pm both of you in a few days, pre-ganksthieving preparations are wiping my time-slate clean unfortunately.
My trip dates are monday 12/10-about noon on 12/16... maybe some friday night sketching? if there's a weekday time at the NG that would be open until 9 p.m. i'm all about it. i anticipate being open from about 7 p.m. or so until maybe 11 p.m. while i'm up there as this is a work related trip.although that's subject to change a little as the situation develops.
cheers and thanks again for the responses :D :yayca:
November 27th, 2007, 02:27 PM
:( my brother and a bunch of friends are going to be here the 13th-16th. So for me its basically a no go...mayhaps on the 16th I could since they would be leaving on that sunday. DAMMIT I have waited too long for a sketch jam....since basically there are like 4 artists in Northern VA that actually do concept art stuff or even do art period :|
December 8th, 2007, 02:41 PM
bummer tet! next time! :)
who wants to go see this saturday morning:
Peter Paul Rubens
in the Gallery's collection
Woodcut in its classic form achieved a final triumph in the Baroque era when painters of exceptional caliber chose it as a dramatic means for expressing the energy and refinement of their draftsmanship. The woodcut offered wide variation in scale and the advantage of printing in colors, and invested a bold element of abstraction into a painterly art of illusion. Most of these works result from close collaboration between a painter and a master block cutter. At their best they reflect a perfect fusion of skill and imagination. Titian, Albrecht Dürer, Giuseppe Scolari, Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Lievens, Christoffel Jegher, Guido Reni, and Bartolomeo Coriolano are represented among the 65 works.
Organization: Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Sponsor: The exhibition is supported by a generous grant from the Thaw Charitable Trust.
Schedule: National Gallery of Art, October 28, 2007–March 30, 2008
Passes: Passes are not required for this exhibition.
On view in the National Gallery's West Building, Ground Floor
I certainly NEED TO SEE TEH WOODCUTZ! NEEED! NEEEEEEEED!
