vcu girls?:D
seriously though, me, cotron, meta and medalwinds have been trying to meet and draw. There are open model drawing sessions here for 3-5bucks a night twice a week, and they FINALLY TURNED ON THE AIR CONDITIONING!
Good variety of models and nice people. Most of the artists are older alumni, so there's a definite generation mix going on.
Anyway, goodluck!

Hey Cotron,
This Thursday (July 8th) are you guys meeting up for the live model @ Pollack? Other than materials, do I need to bring some cash? oh and what time? Is it too hot in there? Not having AC has been killing me.
I need to start doing more life drawings, I'm getting rusty.
cotron
July 6th, 2004, 09:41 AM
Hey- I won't be able to come, I've been in the Illustration Academy for the past month or so, and our lifedrawing is at the same time as the Pollak sessions...but regardless, you should go anyway, it's good practice. It's 3-5 bucks a night, the heat shouldn't be too much of a factor, but I'd wear shorts... it goes from 6:30-9:30 in room 321. I'll be showing up in about two weeks to draw there, I miss it.

July 27th, 2004, 08:10 AM
LOL ,
Man I never would have thought I would be classified as a Richmond kid.
Born in Fairfax, Go to D.C and NOVA at least once a week.
Richmond is a trap. Came here for school and can't escape.
at least I have Victorian houses to sketch.
But there is something I've been wanting to do down here for awhile.
Charles Vess lives in Abingdon VA and is a VCU alumni, from what I understand he does a talk on the origins of fantasy art. Would there be enough interest down here to put on a ConceptArt like lecture get together with Vess as speaker?
Pure selfishness for me. I want to hear him talk. But it would be cool to get people together on the East Coast.
Just putting a feeler out there to gauge interest..haven't made any connections yet.
blankslatejoe
July 27th, 2004, 11:34 AM
Actually, that's kinda funny. I'm friends with Vess' niece, who graduated from VCU's art dept a few years back. I'm not sure if Vess is still in the area, and I haven't talked to the niece in awhile, but I can hunt down her email and see if she thinks it'd be possible to get him to talk.
I'm not sure how 'social' Vess is though, she doesn't talk too much about him.
Cotron, I'm pretty sure you've met the niece at least once too (She's a pal of me and DoomAndy).. I don't know if the Vess link ever came up in a conversation though.
Nekokaiju
July 27th, 2004, 11:43 AM
heh, a family connection...hmm.
Well I had read somewhere that he had done a couple of slideshows on fantasy illustration. Also pretty sure he still lives in Abingdon, VA.
I have his email but have holded off in sending him anything, until, I built up enough interest.A long time ago I met him and we talked about Shakespeare illustrations, he knows his stuff.
I did though email Jason Manley asking if he wanted any official ConceptArt.org connection with this.
I work at the VMFA, and I was thinking of tying the Vess lecture with the Durer exhibit coming in October till January. I'm sure I could get a behind the scenes tour arranged for CA.org members.
That gives us a 4 month window to work in. Hopefully he could be available one weekend.
Also Donato Ginacola visited VCU once and gave a talk. I know he lives in Brooklyn, but that talk was amazing and gave me the guts to start putting my portfolio out there. Not sure of his connection or why he came down, but I want to look into that also.
And one of my English teachers at VCU teaches a class on sequential art and has written for DC comics. Maybe him also....
Okay I'm just brainstorming here... But I think this could be a really cool little thing.
blankslatejoe
July 27th, 2004, 01:03 PM
ha, the coincidences Nekokaiju!
First off, you work at the VFMA? You might know an ex girlfriend of mine, steph, who works there as an intern. She's a cool chick, say hello to her for me if you know her. Also, you might have seen my sister, at an event for kids a few days ago that somehow involved Degas. My sister was dancing ballet for something there...
Anyway,
I was there when donato came, but missed the lecture..
Also, George Pratt teaches at VCU, he might be willing to lecture too.
Who was the English teacher you mentioned?

I have done about...$#!T for the past 6 months..
So I would be honored to join your cult, club, org....
Blank Slate has talked to me a few times to get some figure drawing time...
I mentioned to him that I was going to teach a figure drawing class in Manass Hole.....but that fell through....Ah but I might have good news...
They organization asked if I wanted to teach the class again for this fall....and I agreed.....however in order to make the class a posibility I need students or fellow artists to actualy want to take part....
we will see....I am also a alum of Virgicomwealt Univ

EVREN! About dang time you showed up again!

Does this description of the class sound ok....
Life Drawing
A study of the human form
This is a fundamental class for all serious artists. To learn the fluid
lines and angles of the human form we will begin with quick 5 minute
sketches of the live model to warm up. Rotating poses for sketches will
help ready our hand eye coordination for the next step of drawing 15
minute poses. The longer poses at the end of the session will build the
confidence to study form, shadows, shapes and planes of the human body.
(8 hours)
I only have one day to adjust as neccesary

Hey sorry I missed hanging out for First Friday.
I was in Atlanta for DragonCon, shopping my portfolio around.
I met up with Vess and he seemed cool about coming to Richmond to give a talk on the origins of fantasy art to us guys. I need to email him and hopefully get it a reality.
Also saw Targete, you need to see his oils in person, very interesting.
Not too many AD's there this year and apparently I need pirates in my portfolio. But still managed to make some decent contacts.
Cheers.....

 I enjoy life drawing also, there is a session in williamsburg on thurs evenings at W&M college sponsered by the art club. Are there any in the Richmond area? I am especially interested in 30-60 minute poses. I fear that with the organizers of the local session working in oil paint they prefer 2 hour poses which are getting a little dull."nude swallowed by sofa" is getting to be a common name for many of my pieces.:)
blankslatejoe
September 17th, 2004, 09:39 PM
the sessions in richmond are similar, or at least they were back when I lived there... They would start with about 10 or so 60 second poses, then a 2 hour one.

Hey I was surprised to see some southern VA representation too. I'm over here in Portsmouth.
As an FYI to you Southern Virginians, there's a weekly model session at the Eastern Shore Chapel and I THINK it's on Saturday mornings. I'd be going to it if I had a car. There's an entry fee of $7... I can find out more info on it if you want, just let me know.

AVAST YE SCURVY DOGS!
Metalwinds and I have been talking a lot about getting a sketch night together, and doing it soon. We're thinking Sunday nights, and most likely hosting it at one of our apartments or something, maybe going out and drawing at a coffee shop... maybe pooling our money together and getting a model too. Regardless, I think we need a place for VA people to get together on a regular (weekly?) basis to draw and shoot the shit, keeping us all motivated to make awesome art. I'm posting to ask opinions and to see who's interested, I want to start this soon.

Next Monday, Jon Foster's comin to do a demo and lecture, 3pm-6pm at the Engineering Building's auditorium. Tuesday, he's doing a digital demo at franklin terrace.. same time I think. The engineering building is by Main and Belvidere streets in Richmond, and franklin terrace is just a couple blocks from there.

you can take greyhound from multiple locations around northern va/DCfor about 20-25 bucks, depending on where you start. Takes about 3 hours, 4 if traffic is bad, the buses run pretty regularly though.
youd have to have some way of getting from the richmond greyhound station to VCU though.
I -think- there is a train too, but im not sure where the stations are and I've heard it's closer to 30-40 bucks a ticket, if not more.
goodluck!

edit- yeah joe there's an amtrak that runs down to here, it goes to staples mill road, but there's no city bus that would take you back to vcu (i think). you could take a taxi for about 5 bucks from the greyhound to campus, it's not far, or you can look up bus schedules at www.ridegrtc.com- the greyhound station is on Boulevard, by the Diamond. Hope that's of some help

The demos were amazing. Jon Foster is such a nice, modest guy. It was really cool to see how he achieved his textures with the pallette knife in his oil demo, and how he worked starting with the black and white sketch and layout in painter, then overlaying color in photoshop and going back to painter for finishing details in his digital demo. I have a couple of suggestions, the torpedo factory in Alexandria offers model sessions through its Art League, NOVA community college I believe might offer a class or two the same for George Mason, also I believe their is an artist comminty or several that have meetings and chip in to get a model....
I taught a figure drawing class at the local community arts center in Manassas, you could see which community art center is close to you and go from there, I know there is one also in Arlington

The problem is that it's relatively unknown because all the big art schools get the spotlight--places like Ringling and RISD... but those are all private, 40,000$ a year schools. VCU is a fraction of that.
They've got degrees in painting, illustration, video, sculpture, design, 3d modeling/animation, photography, fashion, interior design. Each of those departments has a ton of classes within them. The school doesn't have the budget of some of the bigger schools, but you'll get out what you put in..and I had a number of excellent professors there.

I go to VCU currently, and yes, it is GRANDE in the spectrum of Art. We have great teachers and an awesome illustration program that's only getting better (no biast here, I promise). I'd thought I'd chime in here. I line in VA and go to school in the state. Didn't know all you guys where here to. So anyway, continue with the uniting and all. Maybe we could meet up and thrown down some pencils or something. Anybody around Richmond during the course of the school year?

Hey you VCU cats, we should meet up soon. If you guys aren't already involved, SOCA (Society of Communication Artists aka Illustration Club) is getting pretty active. Tonight Professor Megank is giving a demo at the Cabell Library @ 7. Come out, it'll be fun, and we can put faces with names. I'll be wearing the tie -

Hey guys, I've been doing the whole 'find a college' thing. I live in Chesapeake and I've never heard of VCU really. I'm going to check this out, because other than that I've been looking at anything from TCC (the community college) and CCAD in Ohio or Ringling....I'm not a big fan of VA, but I don't have a ton of money for big moves.
Anyway, anyone around Chespeake have a sketchgroup going?

Hey guys,
Let me know if you are looking for figurative models. I am a male model, and I live in the Richmond area. I am relatively new to modeling but have worked with McGuffey Center in Cville and with groups around Richmond. I can do afterwork session in and around Richmond. It seems there are a lot of artists here looking for open sessions. Perhaps you could organize your own.
I am already working with Lawrence Robinson, but if you want to start your own drawing sessions, we can work out some times and dates.
Later,

I have been searching this site for other people in the area. I looked at this particular thread before but all of the postings were very old so I thought no one here was interested in a Sketch Group in the DC metro area. I am down for meeting up on occasion. I work during the week so weekends are best for me.
COME ON lets get something going. I to am fairly new to the area and looking for other artist. I find that when you work with other artist it makes you a better artist. So we would have nothing to lose buy forming a sketch group.
If you guys are willing I am down.

As I know it is the holidays obviously this week end is out next week end is New Years week end. So I am Guessing the best time may be Jan. 06, 2007 which is a Saturday might as well kick the new years off sketching. we will have to decide on a meeting place though. Some place we can all agree on, as I know not everyone has a car so metro accessible if possible. I am pretty flexible about this. We will also need a designated time to meet. I would say we should all meet at noon.
The national gallery sounds nice BlackGuy.
Let me know what you guys think.

Are we still on for the National Gallery on Sat. Please Let me know if anyone is interested. I am asking because I do not want to show up and be the only one there. We can make a sketch group work if we can get a consensus on when and where to meet . We all would need to make a commitment to do this. I am so gung ho about this.
So guys lets get it together and do this. Also if Sat does not work please state a date and time more suitable to your schedules.
It is all about the ART.

BlackGuy>A funeral? that may be a little more important.
I guess we will know by Friday who will be able to come. If i get a commitment from at least one person I will be there. Just do not want to be there by myself, art is just more fun in a group setting.
We will see what happens.

Yes Tet and I went it was cool. We hung out walked through the Gallery talked about art found the Diner, gift shop, and cafeteria. That National Gallery is awesome. We decided that we may start meeting and sketching at different gallery each time we decide to meet. There are a lot of freebies in DC.
Oh yeah we did some sketching too. I will post what I did later, I did not get as much done as I would have liked to because we toured the Gallery because this was our first time there. There was some cool a$$ Rembrandt etchings there I was Awe struck to say the least. I saw the type of quality work that is achievable when there are no distractions like TV, Video games, and so forth. I feel very much inspired.
Maybe next time we will have a larger group. But if not I will still go. You must join us next time.

This Monday they are going to allow artists to stay after hours at the BODIES exhibition to draw from the specimens, after the crowds of non-artsy-types go home. Does this exhibition even get crowded? I haven't gone yet. But I suppose this would be the best day to go. Anyone up for scraping a sketch group together? Short notice I know but I just read about it. I'll be driving up from Richmond.
Monday September 24th 7pm-10pm in Rosslyn. $30.
all info found at http://www.bodiestheexhibition.com/intro.html
the FAQ states no photography allowed.

hiya burtz, blackguy,
thanks for the responses... i will pm both of you in a few days, pre-ganksthieving preparations are wiping my time-slate clean unfortunately.
My trip dates are monday 12/10-about noon on 12/16... maybe some friday night sketching? if there's a weekday time at the NG that would be open until 9 p.m. i'm all about it. i anticipate being open from about 7 p.m. or so until maybe 11 p.m. while i'm up there as this is a work related trip.although that's subject to change a little as the situation develops.
cheers and thanks again for the responses :D :yayca:

Works by
Titian
Albrecht Dürer
Giuseppe Scolari
Peter Paul Rubens
Jan Lievens
Christoffel Jegher
Guido Reni
Bartolomeo Coriolano
in the Gallery's collection
Woodcut in its classic form achieved a final triumph in the Baroque era when painters of exceptional caliber chose it as a dramatic means for expressing the energy and refinement of their draftsmanship. The woodcut offered wide variation in scale and the advantage of printing in colors, and invested a bold element of abstraction into a painterly art of illusion. Most of these works result from close collaboration between a painter and a master block cutter. At their best they reflect a perfect fusion of skill and imagination. Titian, Albrecht Dürer, Giuseppe Scolari, Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Lievens, Christoffel Jegher, Guido Reni, and Bartolomeo Coriolano are represented among the 65 works.
Organization: Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Sponsor: The exhibition is supported by a generous grant from the Thaw Charitable Trust.
Schedule: National Gallery of Art, October 28, 2007–March 30, 2008
Passes: Passes are not required for this exhibition.
On view in the National Gallery's West Building, Ground Floor
I certainly NEED TO SEE TEH WOODCUTZ! NEEED! NEEEEEEEED!
