Well, I live in Salt Lake...

I occassionally make it to King's Cottage for their figure study sessions.

King's Cottage Art School
Live models twice weekly

I just post this because it is very difficult for somebody like me, who doesn't really participate in the local art scene (is there a local art scene in SLC? I suspect not ;) ), to find good places that host these.. and I do think that figure stdies are important.

Maybe I'll meet some of you there..

hey, i'm in ogden for the next few of weeks and i need to know where a good art supply store is. i went to ogden blue print. that place is 'ok' but they don't sell quality oil paint. if you know any decent art stores in the area, let me know.

There are a few of us that lurk around here living in Ut...

There is actually an art secne though it is sometimes hard to find and tends to be more in a classical bent....

Edit: Shh, secrets.

Love to know if anything gets set up, would be cool.

As for an art scene in Utah, its existant but not that existant. A lot of it happens in southern Utah as well (what with Zions national park and all).

WillSchnevel

it does? I'm in st. george. what goes on in zions?

Edit: Shh!

Zion's National Park is really amazing for landscapes etc.

Anyways man, you should check out this site

http://www.artistsofutah.org/

and check out the 15 bytes tab at the top, its an e-zine but they print it out for some galleries I think.

Sweet holy crap! Utah has other artists. I thought I was in some sort of creative desert here. Well now this is a pleasent surprise.

So many questions....
How are you all doing?
What type of art do you do?
How do you make a living in this state?

Please tell me you don't paint barnes all day...if you've been to the state fair you should know what I mean about that.

Idiot Apathy
September 4th, 2004, 12:06 AM
I paint barns all day mostly, sometimes shacks.... :P

Ed ... it?

Mr. Pale
September 4th, 2004, 09:35 AM
LOL sorry for the barnyard crack. You live here so I assume you know the culture. Some people here think that unless your painting landscapes (Barns) or religous work your not doing art.

While I'm sure some people enjoy that, I like to draw things that never existed and never will. It makes me happy.

Just out of curiosity which school are you going too?

Idiot Apathy
September 6th, 2004, 01:39 AM
Heh, paint, draw etc whatever you feel like. I'll do whatever teaches me something or makes me happy.

Right now I'm taking it semi-easy at SLCC (Salt Lake Community College).

Idiot Apathy
September 19th, 2006, 08:24 PM
No really, anyone in Utah these days or did you all leave me behind for greener pastures?

(Oh man, over two years have passed in this thread!?)

Mr. Pale
September 19th, 2006, 09:19 PM
Greener than Utah!?! Madness, there is nothing greener than Utah's endless hills of brown scrub grass. Of course I don't travel much and when I do it's to Arizona.

I subscribed to this thread two years ago and never thought I'd see it again. Odd.

Idiot Apathy
September 19th, 2006, 09:37 PM
Ha, no kidding - ancient thread at this point.

Ok, plan of action for getting Don Seegmiller to invite us over for cheese and art discussions? Hehe! :)

Anyways, I'm in South Jordan; 20minutes south of SLC - yourself?

Mr. Pale
September 19th, 2006, 09:42 PM
Sunset about 30 minutes north of SLC.

And anything that involves cheese. I'm there. mmmmm.. delicious cheese.

I've been working to long today, I'm starting to get silly.

Not too bad, let's get some more people and take over Utah, I mean sketch/paint or something.

Somehow I doubt Don is ever around, that post above is probably his last post haha.

I seem to recall Emily G is a Utahn perhaps? William Whittaker, I'm sure he'd love to have us drop in... :D

Miss Wiggle
September 23rd, 2006, 12:34 PM
:) Yo.

Utahn signing in. :b I live in Ogden, about 20 minutes away from Weber State Uni if you're familiar with its location. :)

It's so fetching cold here. :S

I might as well introduce myself too, seeing as I have only sparsely posted here. My name is Becky, 20 years old, just taking my first art classes at uni (ive only taken 1 art class previous). Self taught, want to get into gaming, blah blah blah, whatever. :D

Yeah, pffft - I didn't sign up for this. Let's start an anti-winter petition!

Say, you guys been up to the UMFA at the U lately? There's a faculty show going on right now, you can skip that though ... (hehe!) - The do have some really nice stuff on display elsewhere however; a Sargent, a sweet study of Gerome's, some nice J.T. Harwoods - spied a Rubens too. Ok, those are just for name droppings, other nice works too.

I moved out to Utah a little while ago, I'm actually moving into an apartment in Bountiful in the next couple of days. Is anyone else going to the life drawing classes at Kings Gallery over on 2233 s. 700 e. in Salt Lake? I've been thinking about attending the Tuesday one if I can work out my work schedule, just wondering if the classes are set up well.

Miss Wiggle
December 15th, 2006, 04:48 PM
:/ Nope. I'm in the Ogden area. Life drawing classes frighten me. So much teh nekkid. :\

I'm going to WSU. Taking my first painting class soon. Le gasp, I'm excited! :D

Sven
December 15th, 2006, 09:35 PM
I have a friend who lives in Ogden, and I actually lived there for about 6 months five years ago.
You get used to the nekkid folks pretty darn quickly in life drawing, it's not a big deal after your first class.
I looked at WSU but I can go to the University of Utah for almost the same so I'm applying to finish up my degree there...

December 18th, 2006, 10:19 PM
Heheh, what could be more beautiful than the human form? But anyways, try and find some 'draped' classes at least :)

Once the holidays have settled down (and maybe less snowy...) I'm going to head out a lot more to draw, downtown for urban - elsewhere for trees and what not. Would be cool to meet up with some utahns and talk shop.

Hey guys, I thought I'd post a note here.

The Bountiful/Davis Art Center has it's Utah Illustrators Invitational (http://www.bdac.org/current.html) exhibit up.

Also from the website:
"On January 19 there will be an evening with renowned illustrator/artist William Maughan, 7pm at Bountiful/Davis Art Center, 745 South Main Street in Bountiful. Maughan is the Director of Graduate Fine Art Painting & Illustration at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA. Mr. Maughn began his illustrious career in New York City. He has been an illustrator for 34 years. He will be discussing relevant topics around contemporary illustration."

Does anyone know if there are any figure drawing classes for highschool students going on around Bountiful? I'd try to go to the ones at BYU but I have to go to school at that time! Plus my transportation wont allow me to go to BYU every friday. If only the Bountiful art center taught more classes like that. Their classes seem very elementary.

I'd also love to go to the weekly sketch group, but I don't think my mom would want me gettin together with a bunch of people I met over the internet to go drawing every wednesday.

darnit, I'd love to meet some o' you guys in person though.

The Kings English stuff on Teusday nights and Friday mornings aren't really a class per se, but more of a model standing in the middle of the room and a bunch of people drawing/painted the model. not really an instruction/class but you can definately get some critiques from the other artists in the room. It costs $7 per class. the one I go to on Tuesdays is from 6:30 to 9pm. I suggest getting there a little early to get a good spot. I don't usually get there right on time so I tend to get the odd spots to draw from, which in its own way isn't so bad

A couple other drawing/art oppurtunities in Utah.

The U of U open drawing session on Saturdays from 930-1230 am. It's in the main art building (next to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, UMFA, on the U of U campus) on the third floor, left down the hall and around the corner as you come out of the elevator. The main drawing session is a long pose. Sometimes they have a gesture drawing session in addition to the main one. Cost is 7 per session or 40 dollars per semester, do the math, the per semester one is far cheaper than the per session if you go a lot. This is the one I go to. There's usually a crowd, so get there early.

The Springville Art Store drawing session on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. The "art store" as it's called is a multi use building to the east of the Springville Museum of Art, you can't miss it, there's usually a bunch of cars parked out in front of it. They tend to take long breaks. Last time I was there it was 5 bucks a session, but I haven't been down that way in while. They start with some gestures and then do a long pose for the remainder of the time. Also, there's a great collection of Soviet era art at the museum across the street.

I've been told that UVU (formerly UVSC) in Orem has an open figure drawing session on Thursday nights, but I haven't been because I live up in Murray. So, call their art department to get more info.

Someone already mentioned BYU's Friday open sessions, just know that it changes from semester to semester depending on classroom scheduling. So call the Art department office to get updated info or wander the hall to check the flyers on the bulletin boards.

In addition to these oppurtunities there are a number (5-6)of art festivals there that incorporate plein air painting contests. The next one is in Spring City, a small town home to some excellent painters from the 29th to the 31st of July. Other ones happen in Midvale, Heber City, Ogden, and Helper. I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting about.

Jeffrey Hein holds a monthly demo in his studio/school that's really cheap to go to, it's usually on a Saturday and lasts about six hours. Info on his demo can be found there on his site. http://www.jeffreyhein.com

In spite of its small population, Utah actually has a very active art community.

What up, folks. I've been hip to this site for years, thanks to a buddy of mine, but I've finally hopped on board. Thanks to family and friends, I've recently renewed my love for art and hope to regain the level of passion and ambition I once had years ago. I have a feeling that art is going to save my life...Anywho...the name's Deloy.

I have very meager resources, but...I'm not going to give up like I did years ago. Seeing as how I can't afford to get into a school at the moment, I'm going to absorb as much as I can. With an outdated machine, OS, and programs, hopefully, I'll be able to keep up.

Hope to post some stuff up and share with you fellow Utahns soon.

Peace.

Hey is there anyone active in Southern Utah? Like St. George area?

Hey, I haven't been active on CA in SOOO long, but I was wondering if anyone is still having sketch groups around here. I'd love to meet some of the local CA artists in person ( specially idiot apathy, and Emily G.). Also, I'm promising my self from now on that I'm going to the U of U open drawing sessions, if anyone else here is attending let me know. I'm also looking for any current class opportunities anywhere between Ogden, and Salt Lake. I'm trying to kick things up a notch to get a portfolio ready for art college. Tried to go to BYU but they rejected me :(

Hmm, I've been thinking of hitting up the Downtown Library for some sketching after work for awhile. Maybe we should get something going ...

Wake101: You should check out SLCC's Visual Arts Program, some good teachers there. I think I'm going to sneak a class this next semester actually...

Idiot Apathy: yea, drawing at the library sounds like fun, I love that building. Let me know if you are planning that anytime soon. I can come on weekends. I work until 5:30 in Ogden on weekdays (i live in Bountiful). I'll certainly look into SLCC, I'm going to be attending Weber, but SLCC will let you take their classes even if your not enrolled right?

The Salt Lake library thing sounded like a good idea, I'm going down there this Saturday to do some people drawing after the figure drawing session at the U, so around 12:30-1:00 PM I'll be there. If anyone wants to join me let me know (not that a whole lot of people are still around this thread anyway). Oh well...

I'm going to be leaving for the holidays next Friday. I won't be able to do it until January. Maybe the first Friday of January? If this turns out good we should make this a weekly thing and get alot of people coming to the sketchgroup.

I'd still like to get a sketch group going if anyone is interested. I'm sorry I wasn't able to go that Friday at the end of the year last year. My schedule should be clean from 6:00 Friday through Sunday. If anyone here goes to the U of U saturday drawing session let me know cause I go every week.

Heheh, good, I haven't figure drawn since before thanksgiving anyhow, this way you won't have to see me cry... :)

*EDIT: What a let down, the model was 20 minutes late, posed for about 45 minutes total and left because she was feeling dizzy. I had already paid though, and they didn't give me any money back.

We are going to try poor Yurricks next week on Wednesday, I'll post the details once I get em.

I heard a rumor that Weber is offering a Saturday figure drawing session from 10:30 - 1:30, and that the price is identical to the U's pricing. Anyone living closer to Ogden might want to look into this more.

-BTW still looking to get a Utah sketch group going, it might be good motivation for some of us to draw more *coughs, and points to self*

Fellow Utah-ian-ites.

Me and my buddy went to the Saturday morning session at the U of U this week. The model was extremely professional, and one of the best I have worked with yet. There was a very professional Vybe all the way around.

The actual time was from 9:30 to 12:30 and it was 6 dollars. Definitely looking forward to going back, there is normally supposed to be 2 models, one doing gestures and one doing a long pose.

Also:

I finally bucked up and got a library card. The downtown library is amazing, I highly recommend it. I walked out with over $500 worth of fine art books, which I would only read once then put on a shelf anyways. I think it is a great place to have some coffee and draw as well, maybe we should try to start a sketch group.

Toxdel,

I had surgery about 2 days after I went to th U so I haven't been back yet. You can see a picture of me on the first page of my sketchbook (link below) Say hi if you see me, I'll probably be back to it in a week or 2.

As for a sketch group maybe we should just set a tentative time and start doing it? I'm thinking Sundays? That usually is an easy day to have free, and there isn't very much traffic... heh

PS wtf is up with the weather Utah!?!?!

Hi guys,

Robert Barrett (instructor at BYU) is having a book signing and demo at Provo Art & Frame on Saturday, June 21 at 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. His new figure drawing book (http://www.amazon.com/Life-Drawing-Portray-Accuracy-Expression/dp/1581809794) is out, and I have looked at a copy and it is very nice. :)

Also, the Plein Air Art Festival (http://www.thanksgivingpoint.com/entertainment/index.html#pleinair) is this weekend, June 20-21, at Thanksgiving Point.

No new posts in over a month.. Sad

Utah art mueseum has a show going: Monet to Picaso (http://umfa.utah.edu/monettopicasso)

I have been going to the U every week for a month, as well as Kings. I met Toxdel as well.

I have also been going to the library once a week or so to draw. There is also a cool coffee shop on 4th south that is open late, it's fun to draw there as well. We should really get this group thing going, I'm open for suggestions. Also, anyone else down to go to the zoo and draw? Plein Aire anyone? I know hella spots, I go every week.

Utah? Let's do something social! God knows the heat and people around here are hot and sweaty, lets band together!

- If anyone is up for a drawing session at the library, or anywhere else in SLC for that matter let me know I'm game for anything.

So...does anyone know what happened to the U of U Saturday figure drawing sessions? I went last weekend for the first time in a year (been living in Ogden and going to the Weber ones) and absolutely no one was there. Maybe its because it was memorial day weekend?

That would be a good assumption. I just moved to NYC this Fall and they had them regularly up until I left and I've had friends going after I left. They often don't have it during holiday weekends.

Hey peter,

Its Joe from Tanner Frames. I didn't know you posted on here. How is the NYAA?

Sakievich
June 24th, 2009, 10:50 PM
Yeah I used to post here all the time, especially when I was still at the Y. But I've changed directions so many times Im a little dizzy.

NYAA has been really good. It's not perfect and a few of the classes have been a wash. But most of them have been really good, especially the heavy anatomy courses, painting, and a guest artist class I took. The students are really dedicated as well which always adds to the energy of a place. I really think it's the only place to go if you're pursuing a figure oriented MFA. How's Tanner doing?

whofarted
July 2nd, 2009, 01:52 AM
One thing that I always herd was good about that school was the anatomy courses. Its good to hear that the other students are serious. I would like to be in such an environment. I looked up the faculty online, lots of talented folks. Have you taken a class from Dan Thompson? Tanner is good. I recently quit their to pursue another job but I still go in their to b.s. occasionally.

Sakievich
July 2nd, 2009, 03:42 PM
I did take a class from Thompson, he's a great draftsman and very nice. If you're still looking for undergraduate programs, you ought to look at the Lyme Academy in Connecticut. Randy McIver, my anatomy teacher, teaches there. I've looked at their website and they have a really great program.
