hey everyone,
i have an idea, how about this friday, at the trabant chai lounge (http://www.trabantchailounge.com/) at 8:00?
just a casual thing, i think we could just bring our sketchbooks and see what happens. i see the other groups around the world have begun to organize mini-sessions and whatnot, i figure we could start by getting acquainted and then maybe discuss something.
i'll be there, and bring my buddy kristen from work. i will wear a bright green shirt.
hope to see you all!

When I met my bud, Nathan Campbell (http://www.conceptart.org/artist/nathan-campbell/), it was at Bauhaus Books and Music in Capitol Hill. Lot's of artists go to draw at coffee shops and it's also a location where Nate has found possible job prospects. We also went to Caffe Vita on 1005 E. Pike (also Pill Hill) which has an upstairs area with lots of big tables and if you smoke, you can. No smokey treats at Bauhaus...got nixed a while back. But the coffee is smash-your-face-wide-open-good and the treats are bueno.
At any rate, certain evenings may work for me on a monthly basis but Friday evenings will be my best.
Peace.

June 8th, 2004, 01:02 PM
I totally understand, undertow.
Okay...so how about this, let's say that the second Friday of the month is an evening gathering. The third Saturday of the month is also a gathering of which time is to be determined. That way, if you cannot make it one time, you can hopefully hit the other time. No need to go ballistic with meeting every week...we do have other committments it seems. But this would be enough to get people together and get the ball rolling.
So...if we plan this correctly, we can have the first meeting be the third Saturday of June (the 19th) and then all that needs to be considered is the time and location.
Any takers? If so, start suggesting locations and times. Majority vote? Straws? One person picks and then next time someone else picks? Ideas are welcome.
Peace.

redehlert ~ that's funny, a group of us hung out with nathan a couple times, he introduced me to the bauhaus. it's a great place, only problem is its very packed there sat nights and there's been a few times i tried to find parking and gave up.
its good to know you have taken over my planning duties :D
that sounds good, having two meetings a month, since everyone sounds moderately busy. i can't promise to make it until the workshop is over, my spare time is sucked up by working on a few projects for my portfolio.
the trabant ended up being a nice spot, though it was more of an inside place, and a little sparse. a great spot is the aurifice cafe. it's an industrial theme with RED walls. http://www.aurafice.com/. on tuesday nights they have live ambient music... inviting, artsy atmosphere, and easy to get to.

Hey all,
This friday - no go for me....i'm getting cultured seeing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the PNB. I was toying with next Saturday being the first attempt...not trying to step on toes, Nova. : ) Bauhaus is cool, but crowded as all get out as you have stated. Cafe Vita is a nice place. I'm totally digging Aurafice...let's do that place as long as there is drawing space.
Hey Oregano, feel your pain. Nice stuff, btw. You'd like my buddy, Don Barnett's work. Check out http://www.donbarnett.com he's a blast to have as a mentor. Hope you can make it out sometime.
So...next Saturday, June 19th do we make a go of this at Aurafice? Evening? Heck, they're open until 2 am....
If it doesn't work out because some peeps are going to the killer Austin workshops, then we'll shoot for July 9 (Friday).

Hey Mike,
Thanks for the offer, but I'm on Orcas, just North of you. It still takes an hour to get to Anacortes with all the stops at the other islands. Plus the fare back onto the island is almost $50.
It's really too bad, too, because I used to live down in Freeland before my wife and I decided to move up here.
Ohwell, such is life sometimes :D
Are you Navy? I've got a friend stationed on the George Washington right now. Last I heard he was out around India, but that was about two months ago or so...

PS- I've done the wisdom tooth thing too. Had four impacted ones. No fun. My sympathies.

June 9th, 2004, 07:55 PM
yes I am Navy=] My little brother is an IS2 (intelligence specialist 2nd class) stationed on the GW as ships company, one of the guys from my shop is out on the GW right now as well. I used to work down in Renton for WotC (wizards of the coast) and was laid off in 99.. Had a great lead for doing character design for Microsoft X-Box titles but i got sick of waiting for the phone call and the unemployment was running out. After some soul searching I decided to pursue my original career choice of being a pilot after spending a year unemployed in the WA job market. I've since changed my mind as a member of active duty and have started working back in the game industry on my off time updating my portfolio and building new bridges to make my transition back to civilian life an easy one. Yeah, the fare for the ferry is rediculous during peak season.. hell, gas up here isn't any cheaper either $2.30+/gallon is frigging rediculous, I get decent gas milage in the Ranger but $35 to fill up the tank blows. Hell, if you feel like coming down this way sometime during the summer drop me a line and we can hang out somewhere around here. I like your work, great stuff! I wish I could do the stuff in painter that you do=/ I'm learning the digital medium very slowly and didn't pay much attention in painting class in college:P In the mean time I'm doing lots of marker stuff, gray scale with washes, and leaving color work to other artists that I hire on. If you check out my little site I have WIP pencil art for the book cover I'm working on posted up there now. I should finish it this weekend.. in the mean time I'm fighting off this cold and adjusting to military life again after 24 days of leave. If you ever feel like doing a collab piece let me know!
-Mike
p.s. 3 of them are impacted, only one has ruptured (upper right). I should have had my mother in law pull them for me while I was on leave... I hate the navy dentists. In the words of Dane Cook "you need to brush more do you see the blood coming off your gums" "Yes I see the blood.. did you ever think that that's happening because you're fishing around in my mouth with SHARP OBJECTS?!!! AAAAAAAAH!!!"

Hey Undertow,
By chance, did you know a Jon Schindehette at WotC? He's my new Creative Manager at the UW where I'm full time as their biomedical illustration. Just curious since he was there as well.
Good luck with the teeth. Perhaps you could have a cap of poison you could crack and breathe onto the dentist as they are working on you so they don't hit you with those blood letters. As you get foggy with the drugs, you must Remember the tooth...the tooth....the toooooth. (heheehee....gotta love Dune).
Cheers,
Dave

yeah.. I remember John. I ran into him a few times at The Keg and around the office but I never really talked to him. Actually, if I remember correctly he was the art director for Magic back in 98. If that's correct the first time I met him and talked to him was at the San Diego Comic Con in 98, I ended up talking to him about doing some artwork but I never followed through on it. I got my job working at the corporate office in March of 99 working in the tech department and did some graphic design for the retail stores gaming network and some concept art for a new concept store in Everett. I was attempting to start doing artwork full time for WotC as a part of the IP Development group until we were laid off. I had a friend who was the VP of the department who got laid off the same time so that never worked out. Right now I'm working on an RPG called CthulhuTech as the lead concept artist/art director. If everything works out with our start up I'll be set up for full time work after I get out of the Navy, either way I'll have a pretty decent portfolio together to market to various game development studios.
-Mike
p.s. try the site again, it's working all right for me.. then again it's a temporary site that I set up to just throw up some artwork with verizon, and not all of the mysite.verizon.net sites work for everyone:P

Hey Local Crew,
Archie's comment about the Art Institute of Seattle brought up a recent wish to take some more illustration classes. Sure, having a Master degree in medical illustration sounds like I should be bad ass, but straightup, I have a lot to learn and am open to thoughts (even AIS if it is good, Archie) from yoos guys out there. I'd like to keep it to Seattle or the surrounding cities (e.g. Kirkland, Bellevue) if at all possible.
One last thing - this new interface threw me for a complete loop...didn't think I was in Kansas anymore.

Xia, doodles and scribbles? Your recent work on your site is more than just doodles and scribbles. By the way, how and where do you create your "scribbles"? Are they all paint or are they digital paint in a program? I really like the way it looks, and i want to try new things. My drawings are mostly in pencil, and im sort of getting into Prismacolor markers. I dont have the talent for color as you do. You and Bengal have some amazing talent with color, and mixing paint. (Or digitally mixing paint is probably a little easier..?) Please reply.

Hey Prostate, et al.
Still on for Friday, July 9.
I liked Nova's location for Aurafice in Capitol Hill. I walked past it and found it to be pretty slick - just like the photos on their web site suggest.
Let's confirm a time that works well for as many as possible.
I'm a distance runner/aspiring triathelete, so I don't stay out late on Fridays due to training events held on the following morning.
That said, I'll probably make myself leave at approx. 11, but will try to be on site at 8-ish. I'll have sketchbook in hand -- something I RARELY carry around with me and will actually attempt being creative. Dare to dream.

I like the idea of showing off what we draw, but perhaps this would be better if we came together with our own little thunderdome events (too bad we don't have the King Dome anymore...that name could work....heck, there's the Tacoma Dome....that could work as well). Perhaps this thunderdome idea is something we can get initiated this evening so that we have something to look forward to for future gatherings? Just an idea.

what is a thunderdome?
Thunderdome is an e-battleground where artists of concept art have taken a concept and battled it out to reign as champion supreme against all, or against another opponent.
Here's a link to see some thunderdome art from the conceptart crew.

So...we could take an idea or concept, set some parameters for it and then have it. Hope this helps clarify things.

Hey troops,
I'm envious of the get togethers that I can't go to because I live too far away to make it worthwhile - I'd have to leave almost before I got there haha. It just looks like a lot of fun.
Anyway, to the point: I'm thinking of hosting an overnight pot-luck drawing retreat sort of thing for the Washington crew. Perhaps a Friday/Saturday thing, perhaps mid to late August or early September (we're still unpacking from moving in to our new digs here).
I live up on Orcas Island, and my wife and I have just finished building our house (still doing some finishing work, but hey) - We're on 3 acres in a fairly secluded community. Which means lots of woods and nature and not a whole lot of anything else. Added to that, the lot next door is a wetlands, and there is a larger wetlands down the hill within walking distance. So there's plenty of places to sit and draw and just hang out.
Anyway, lets kick around some ideas on this if anyone is even interested. It's still in the tentative stages at the moment, and I realise that this may not even be a feasible idea, but I'm open to suggestion on this.
Cheers,
~Oreg.

It was nice to meet you all. If anyone up for doodle in the coffeeshop somewhere lemme know anytime. I am always up for doodle!
I have an idea, next time we should do SketchJam! Past the paper around the table. Each one of us have 30 minutes to doodle, then pass it on to the next person until we have everyone's sketchs on the page. The last person on there keep the page. COOL? It takes about a few hours last meeting so...i figure, everyone should doodle.

ben mauro- have fun with abbott! i know i did....
Talkin' about Digipen? guess you went there and prostate's going to? I went there in 2001-2002. Only went a year.... couldn't really afford another LOL... plus I didn't get much out of the instructors then (different ones now... except Abbott's still there) I basically taught myself while going there and I realized I didn't really enjoy the animation part LOL.
Honestly though, I didn't really mind Abbott... filling 50-100 pages a week in my sketchbook was great cause I actually got a break from the 3d stuff. Plus Abbott didn't really yell and hound me about pages when I didn't have 'em all like he did with everyone else.... just because I'm so damn cool.
Anyway, if you weren't talking about Digipen.... well... this post is kinda dumb then

i wasnt, but dont worry about it. i did something like 100 pages a week for the 3 quarters i had abbott at AIS. 12 to 16 hours of studio life drawing a week, plus any waking minute of my life was spent drawing something.
sigh, those were the days. still trying to recapture it.

Uh-oh... something came up for me this Saturday. I am going to be going to see the Seattle Symphony perform the Lord of the Rings at 2 pm this Saturday, and I'm not sure what will be up with me for the rest of the day... I'll probably be with my boyfriend, and since he lives in Puyallup, I'm not sure how long we'll be hanging out, or if he would want to drive me to Seattle. I'll have to call him today and find out what's up, but if I can't make it, I hope everybody has fun! Is it the same place as before?

Ben Mauro; I’m set to graduate this December. I will be sure and introduce myself next time.
skrubbles; Cool! I saw the big orange guy from this mod on polycount awhile back and I was impressed.
Johnny Magnum was not for a mod, law dogs is already doing the western mod thing. I mainly did this because I wasn’t happy with the way the current crop of western games like red dead revolver and so on looked. I thought it would be fun to do my version of the gun slinger type character.
Anyway I’m drooling over the Eon site, awesome stuff! I will probably have a bunch of questions for you at the next meet about this mod. I’m working on concepting a new unreal player-model and a death match map. Hopefully next sketch group I could show you some of my concepts.
This group just keeps getting more interesting with each new person I meet. I’m defiantly going to try and become a regular at these gatherings from now on.

Yeah the orange beast (the Shepherd) is definately kickass... can't remember if the texture for it is on the CLE site or not, but its a work of art... Barry (Hyper) did an amazing job on that thing... and for the record Aaron St.Goddard (brasshorsekiller) designed the creature. And I'll answer as many questions as I can, but I have to keep my lips sealed about alot of things that'll be in the game... Eon is gonna be a publicly released and free to download and play demo, and will also continue in production adding a shitload more depth to the game... we have a lot of amazingly cool game features that have been designed and have never been seen in any games before, so I can't talk about that kinda stuff... sorry :( but also, that's another reason why I'm working on the game... because I know for a fact that when its released it is gonna make a big impact in the gaming world.

i think the environment idea is the best idea on earth. we could even move around, spending a set time in each area like in figure drawing [15 mins, 2hrs, etc]
anatomy night sounds fun. how about perspective, painting night or others for that matter? we could even have someone or a few people prepare a demo if they want.

perspective + painting = 2 things I totally need to work on.... demo's on both would be super cool, and then after the demo we can practice those techniques or just do our own thing.
As for environment thing sounds cool... but since its during the day I'd have to know about it like 2 weeks beforehand so could request the day off... other than that I always have sundays and mondays off, so if it was on those days you can totally count me in.

I won't know until tomorrow if I can pick up some of you guys, or even go to the sketch night. I've been asked by a friend to do some work over the weekend at his company. I'll let you guys know whats up when i find out...

Jetpack: Gastank is willing to give us a ride, so we'll be fine.
Gastank: If Skrubbles is going then I'll go, give me a call on friday to let me know if it's going down. Usually Jetpack arrives at my house around 7:10 or so to pick us up.
Skrubbles: You remember where my house is right?? If not Gastank got my address. So try to get to my house around 6:30 p.m.
I'm up for whenever friday or saturday, sometimes I wish I lived closer to seattle, just for these meetings.

since i didn't show you guys any of my work at the first gathering, i opted to put together a small smattering of work of olde and new to share with you. true, true - it's mostly med illus, but that's what i do.

or you can just go see some work at http://www.cognitionstudio.com - but this is stuff that you may see in the above link. my wife and i are currently getting images together to update the cognition studio web site.

Woohooo! I'll see you guys on Friday! :trippy: I'm also up for a concept theme, maybe what would happen when good superheroes go bad, or we could just throw some words around, like teenage mutant ninja cupcakes.

rats! Missed one, and I'll miss another! Friday I'm going to watch the Mariners LOSE. Last weekend I was in 'summer wedding madness' which will continue for a few more weeks. I haven't forgotten about yous... I've been drawing lots of spaceships.

Hey Nova,
I was wondering if it would be possible if you might be able to pick me up, if you're going to sketch night? If you couldn't, that's fine, but I don't know if I have a ride.
