hey do you guys meet up any times, (that's not during the day) work has me so busy, I'm not free at all until after 7 pm...

I met Tyboogie the other night at Perter DeSeve's talk, and look forward to meeting all you other NY concept arters....

maybe we should try to all get to the Society to meet up...

and if anyone who does know the Society and it's chairperson Dennis Dittrich, I'm gonna be doing a talk and possible demonstration at one of his classes at Jersey City University....

at this point nothing is slated in stone, but if anyone is interested I could see if it would possibly be open to non-students of the university..

my tentative plane is to maybe offer a paint demo using Photoshop...

but again, nothing is decided yet, and at this point it won't be happening until next year with the new class sessions starting up..

let me know

I definitely think it would be a good idea for all of us to get together in some way.

Mayhaps we could all agree to meet for a certain figure drawing class once every 2 weeks or so, and then go out for drinks afterwards to give crits or swap war-stories and such.

There is a pretty good fig. drawing place on Spring Street that I used to go to, that might be a good, central location.

I also have a studio in Brooklyn that has a pretty awesome roof-top that would be good for parties and such... just putting it out there.

I guess what is important here is that someone takes the initiative to actually organize an event, which I am not against doing, but it would be easier for me if I had some additional help because my schedule is pretty crazy these days.

Thoughts?

Hehe, yeah I kinda set that trap up for myself. OK, well, once things quiet down a bit for me after i get back from E3, we can start taking suggestions as to what type of get-together everyone would like to organize.

count me as a no show for the workshop

I'm getting married in Sept and going to Comic Con in July and the Lottery people keep ignoring my requests to tell me some winning numbers...

on a side note...

to everyone going to the workshop, (if you claim taxes on a 1099 form, i.e. freelance and make over $600.00 with 1 specific client, or more) get receipts for any costs you may incur whilst at the workshop, or plane ticket cost, art materials etc....... because this function, for those freelancing for money is a tax deduction..

I'm not an accountant, but I have been freelancing for over 12 years now and it is a perfectly acceptable deduction, since it is work "betterment" related...

just my two cents, hope it's useful

well unfortunately parsons doesnt ahve open figure drawing in teh summer, and double unfortunately is that next fall theyre going to try and keep it open for students and alumni only--at least for the first month

they said theyre trying to get more students to go to it--and theyll need more room

but theres always the spring street fig drawing session for this summer

I guess I can understand Parsons wanting to leave it's figure drawing classes open to only Students and alumni only, but I was already looking at the ASL anyways. I'd goto Spring street, but I don't like going too far downtown. The Midtown area is pretty much my limit as far as how much I'll tolerate being in Manhattan, thanks though.

Will you be going every week, once a month?
It could also be nice is we could all meet at the society on one of their thursday night activities or at the Met.

In fact I think I ran into JRR once at the society. Both of us standing over one of donato's paintings. I remember the little stuff from years ago but don't ask me what the last movie I saw was.

Doesn't the Art students league have a per session fee drawing class?

Nah, you don't want to run into me, I'd probably knock you down, but I'm cool to meet you folks. I suck at drawing, trying to relearn everything again and go from there.

I checked out the info from the Arts student league and as far as I can tell, they usually charge a monthly fee, but it's just $175/month, not including the registration. So all in all, I figure 20 classes a month for that price is pretty decent and meets my other selecting criteria.

May 21st, 2004, 06:32 PM
Eric - I haven't really signed up for any sessions yet.....

But now I am thinking that JRR might have apoint about that place being oppressively hot in the summer, that seems to jog a memory or two in me.

Well, I still think we should do it, but I have another idea too: We could arrange to meet up for drinks at a bar, OR, have some drinks and burgers on the roof-deck of the studio I work out of..... check it out:

OK new plan. What day this coming week is good for everybody? Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday?

I say we all meet up at a bar in Williamsburg on one of those nights (Pool Bar or Yabby), and once we have met each other, we can arrange for a BBQ/Roof Party sometime in July.

Plus, we can then plan on some sketch outings to the Spring Street Studio.... what say you? Might be a good way to break the ice, instead of us all making a ruckus at the Spring Street Studio, or getting lost trying to find my studio.... Sound good?

Here's the info:

Thursday Night, 8:00 pm at "The Pool Bar" (AKA Union Pool)

Corner of Union and Meeker in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Train: Take the "L" train to the Lorimer Avenue stop (second stopp in brooklyn). Try to be on the back of the train.

When you get off the L train, head the opposite direction that the train is traveling down the platform and up and out the exit onto the corner of Union and Metropolitan. You should be right in front of a diner called Kelloggs.... if you aren't, go back down and try again.

Look for the raised highway (BQE). Head down Union avenue towards the highway. The road that runs underneath the highway is called Meeker. On the corner, you should see a bar. Go in. Go to the back and out onto the patio. I should be back there, already drunk and angry.

If you have any questions, or you get lost, too bad. Haha.

Here's a map:

Well, I'm really only good on Saturdays. I'd offer up a weekday, but I live in the Bronx and when it comes to being in any part of Long Island an urge to NOT travel overwhelms me. I mean two & a half, to three hours on public transit doesn't inspire great things.

Incidentally, some folks and myself in the NYC area cluster of the East Coast Artists Unite (http://www.ecau.net), have had meets about every other week for the past few years. If anyone's interested, feel free to check out our groups forum once in a while to see what events (http://studio.ecau.net/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=10) are jumping. That link there will take you to our events listings. We event list up jobs, no bullshit, legitimate jobs, contests, scholarships, grants, fellowships internships and what not.

Hey NYC folk!

Well unfortunately, I can no longer call myself a New Yorker.... I have moved to Boston to work for Turbine as a concept artist...... but I will always be a New Yorker at heart!

So, because I have moved, I need to find someone to take over my half of my work studio in Brooklyn, which I shared with another illustrator friend.... anyone here interested, or know anyone who might be?

The rent (Your half) will be $194 for half of a 250 square foot room in a converted factory building. Its a pretty cool building, mostly with other musicians and recording studios. The person you share it with is a cool guy who is hardly there because he has a day job.

Send me an e-mail at work if you are interested: smurray@turbinegames.com

Tyboogie, I'd really appreciate it if it was possible you could share info on those free drawing sessions at Parsons you posted about a few months back in the summer. You said parsons was going to make it students exclusive for possibly the first month, how about afterwards. Let a guy know, ok?

Jrr, you want to meet up, with the summer sun & fun dying, now is the best time to catch me willing to chill. If you heard about something jumping and want some company, let a cat know, yo.

Well unfortunately, I can no longer call myself a New Yorker.... I have moved to Boston to work for Turbine as a concept artist...... but I will always be a New Yorker at heart! You can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the boy.

Good luck at Turbine, Mutton!

Anyone been to Spring St or Parsons lately? Is Parsons students/alums only still? I need to get my ass into some drawing studios. The old figure drawing abilities are a bit rusty...

What drawing stuff do you guys usually bring to these sessions?

It used to go down in either downtown Manhattan or Brooklyn, but since Muttonhead moved things kinda died silently. Sadly the pulse of life in NYC has kinda died. I guess new folks are going to have to kick some stuff up, anyone interested in making something happen? I'd be more than willing to call up Parsons art department to find out about their drawing sessions thing or do the thing at Spring Street. Any takers?

Outstanding, I've got mid-terms & two weeks worth of back homework to deal with right now. I've even got a drawing class mid-term, can ya believe it? I will be able to make the session that happens on October 29th, at around 6pm, or whenever the 4 train drops me off at Union Square. Is there anything specific folks going to these sessions should bring? I figure I'll use the Friday classes to meet new people, get myself some more learning on drawing, and since I'm oddly only sociable when I'm dog tired, it works out both ways for everyone.

so i figured out a way to get everyone out of hiding.

i posted this invitation for Jon Foster in the "I Miss Foster" thread:
So as i'm fevereshly trying to finish up an illustration for the SI47 annual (deadline today) I remembered the fact that Jon will be one of the Judges this year in the Sequential Art category. Now as far as I can tell, that means that when they do the actual judging, Jon will have to be here in NYC to participate. And if this is true, would you happen to have any time off to hang out with us CAers from NYC, Jon? Considering the fact that you paid for lunch for Lana and Myself at the 2003 Comic Con, taking you out for lunch and/or dinner would be just my way of saying thanks.

Assuming that Jon accepts the invite, i know he'll be a rallying cry for the rest of you. (not that i've been too great at trying to meet up with everyone)

So i was over at the Society of Illustrators dropping off my entry for SI47 and i noticed thay they too have life drawing sessions. I know they may be a little late for you brookliners but i still think you should make an effort to come because this is hosted by SI and they have some high profile illustrators coming to these things.

Tomorrow the 21st they are having their "jazz/sketch" session. its $15.00 and there's gonna be both models and jazz musitians so you can draw both. there will be a light buffet too. it runs from 7:00 - 10:00 PM and Joe Ciardiello will be there (he's the dude that does a ton of illustrations and charicatures for People magazine) I'm seriously considering going.

Damn Commy, that sucks. I was going to be at the Parsons thing myself, but the damn Sandman and his right hand man exhaustion beat my ass thoroughly Friday afternoon, so I couldn't make it. I might go next friday, but I seriously walk about 3 miles both ways to and from my college, cause I'll be damned if I'm paying what the MTA is asking for fare nowadays. That and I do an hour work-out after classes 4 times a week, I seriously doubt I'd go the extra mile and inconvience myself with a trip into Manhattan. To be honest, being in Manhattan is a major hassle for me these days, so unless it's an ECAU meet, don't expect to see me down there cause I'm finding myself hard pressed to even make the ECAU meets I set up for folks.

so the Big Apple Con (http://www.bigapplecon.com/prod01.htm) is in town this weekend. I'll probably go tomorrow cause it's practically accross the street from my apt. Since I'm new to NYC this con is new to me.

Any suggestions from you veterans? Is this worth busting out the portfolio for? Is this just your typical geekfest or are there legit companies looking for talent? The creator list looks somewhat impressive but not the company list. Seems like a bunch of indie and small press companies whoring their stuff. You'd think that with Marvel and DC located a few blocks from here they'd rock a small booth or something. They dont seem to be listed.

should i be on the lookout for anyone from this forum?

goldenavatar
November 19th, 2004, 09:05 PM
The Big Apple Comic Con is more like a monthly comicbook Mall if anything. Anyone with a cleared check can have a booth there, so it doesn't mean the companies are in any way legit or worth the time dealing with. I mean, these guys (http://www.crazeecomics.com) get a table there every so often, so you can pretty much see what I'm getting at. Anyway, if you want, feel free to bring your port, but don't expect too much from it. If you're looking to get some comics cheap, then you really are hard pressed to beat them. If you self publish any of your work, get business cards and make contacts with the comic shop owners, they can be pretty friendly about carrying/selling indy books, if the work in them is marketable.

Digi (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/member.php?u=4054) started this awesome sketch group in Toronto. They meet up at a specified time at a subway station and then ride the trains back and forth sketching people. now George Pratt told me that when he wnet to school at Pratt in Brooklyn he'd sketch on the subway for hours. Say's that's how he got so good. So hows about we do that? we can varry the trains every time we do this so we can stop by everyone's stops and pick up more people.

I.E. BillB lives in williamsburg. so if we all take the train that goes past him we can meet him at his stop. Same goes for the queens people. Makes it convinient for certain people per session. How does that sound? I'm willing to bust this out come march. on the weekends. we can even stop by people's recomended hangouts on the way.

Just so folks here are in the know. AmishCommy and myself have been messaging each other back and forth for the past few days about hte Subway sketch group thing. So far it looks like NYC may have a Subway Sketch Group of it's own pretty soon. The date we're kicking around right now is March 26th, meeting up at Penn Station at around 4pm. I've asked him if he could pick a coffee place nearby as it might make for an easier rally point then the Escalator entrance near K-Mart(Walmart?). here's what I'm posting about the Subway sketch group

Inspired by Digi (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/member.php?u=4054), goldenavatar and myself are starting our own subway sketch group in NYC.

Details:
Sunday March 27, 2005 we will meet up at 1:30 PM (i'll try to be there at 1:00) at the Starbucks outside Penn Station (34th Street between 7th and 8th Ave. right next to 1 Penn Plaza). We will take the 2 or 3 train up to the Bronx Zoo area and then down to Brooklyn and back again.
The only cost for this is the price of a subway pass.

every week we will try a new subway line. Bring your pens, pencils and sketchbooks. we will spend a few hours assaulting the personal space of unassuming subway travelers.

Drawing on the subway presents a great oportunity to observe people. Also, by not providing you with a lot of time or still poses it forces you to get down the essential gesture of a person. I've filled up whole sketchbooks with chicken scratches masquerading as gesture drawings and it has been very helpful to my development as an artist. My hero, friend and mentor, George Pratt (Enemy Ace, Wolverine: Netsuke), credits this method for his development as well. he would spend hours on the subway to and from Pratt institute in the late 70's sketching people.

We welcome every skill level.

My girlfriend is leaving to miami for a few days the last week of the month and I was thinking about maybe having some NYC CA'ers coming out and having a kick ass drawing session in her/ my apartment... Not in the LI area myself, and given how Queens is set up, I never will be. Try hitting up all the various online forum points for artists to let folks know about this. Wetcanvas.com, ecau.net, sketchbooksessions.com, Deviantart.com, and meetup.com are pretty good places to post up about these things, though I can't guarantee any kind of turn out one way or the other And these life drawing classes sound like something folks I know of in the eastern end of Queens would definetly be interested in, if they even said anything to that extent about their interest in it. good luck getting people together. No one shows up.

Golden and I started started a sketch group that meets every Sunday, but not too many people show up. Even Golden stopped showing up :P . But i still make it. Sundays, at 1:30 at 1 Penn Plaza. Although this next Sunday I can't hang out as long as the last two times. I may even have a hot girl join us this Sunday. Maybe this will get some ouf you out there.

Also I've been reading about a bunch of artists started a model session at one of their studios. Its invitation only and a bunch of big names from the Fine Art world show up and sketch from a live model. Then they go out to eat and bitch about the art world. I was thinking about doing something like that. My roommate is out of town this week. and maybe even next week. (he's ususaly never around because work sends him all over the place.) I dont have a ton of space and i can't afford a model. But if you're ok with drawing a fat and hairy russian, I very comfortable in my undies.

Are you hitting on me :x ?
HA! - Yeah..I don't know what would be best. Maybe it's just not possible, but I also had an idea where we'd meet up perhaps once a month, and bring in sketches, paintings, digital work..anything that we've been working on and really get some sweet constructive criticism going. sounds a little like "class", but we can chug beers to make people feel more at home :^^:

- I guess I'm also concerned with the networking aspects of the whole scenario. I know plenty of "artists" - but primarily we're all kind of loners, and stand offish - and we're all divided in our artistic ideals. Shit, I'm like one out of 2 who actually draw from the figure.

and sure...i'll draw ya real sexy - I'm partially russian myself...maybe I can find the artistic connection between my gene pool and muse...?wha?! :dur:

BWAHAHAHA!!!!

Loomer - you should come out Sunday for the Subway sketch group. It's a lot more challenging then a nude model because you have a very limited time to draw a person before they move. It realy improves your skills. and Drawing people clothed is more difficult. and Hito may come up from Philly this weekend.

I've also been going to the Society of Illustrators Jazz Sketch sessions. It is really cool there. Kinda like a chill Jazz Club with a full bar and a bunch of seasoned veteran illustrators showing you that you really do suck and really should try harder. And its a great way to network with the bigshots of the industry.

The Critique group is an awesome idea. We should really start that up. I can talk to some of the people at SI to see if one of the bigshot illustrators wants to join us and tear us all a new one. Hey, we may get lucky and get Irene Gallo to show up. (hint hint Irene)

I also had a few people recently ask me to teach them Life Drawing. I'm no expert but i'm helping them out. and maybe we can meet up and share our knowledge with the newbees.

Yea, Amish & me kicked up the subway sketchbook group, I pretty much post up the events wherever there's a decent presence of artists folks. I haven't been to them because I'm pretty much dead on my feet Sunday mornings after work & my neighbors loud, long, sporatic parties. After an aquaintance of mine saw my stuff on DA she pretty much told me something I already knew. That the 2 or 3 months of my not practicing had really cost me, & it was visible in the sketches I had made. I pretty much decided to stop & make some plans at that point, so I spend my weekends working extra hours so that I'll have the cash to afford taking life drawing & anatomy lessons this summer at the Art students league amongst a larger long term game plan. I just felt there should be some explaination as to why I haven't made it since the first one & why I don't want Amish to hold up the others who come.

Anyways, this sounds like things are popping these days in NYC. I can only hope more jumps as a result of all this.

Cool Golden - I hope you can make this Sunday, and perhaps we'll meet.
I learned a shitload at the ArtStudentsLeague...what a great place. If I still lived in NYC I would definetly be taking some class there. I only took two teachers there: Leonard Gervits and Sherry Camhy (whom I was already studying under) - both great teachers. Good for you for getting in gear and going.

Like I said..Sundays are gonna be tough for me to make...but I'll try and make as many as possible. As far as other shit going on...who knows...it'd be nice to get some NY action happening, even if it is sporadic.

cheers!

Where did you wait? I was there at starbucks. I was outside sketching for about 2 minutes and then went inside to get away from the cold. I was running late But I was there at 1:40 and i waited until 2:20. This girl, Jin, has been showing up the last few times. She showed up and we ended up going to the park again. It was nice while the sun was out but then got relly cold. We hang out by the zoo sketching people on the benches getting their portraits done. Made friends with a bulgarian artist. Kinda bugging him for information cause i'm thinking of setting up my own stand overthere. Some of those guys charge $40 per drawing which takes them 30 mins. I could clean house there. ;)

Anyways, Here is my cell for future referece: 561.827.3451 (its Five, Six, One not the other way around.) its a FL area code. Don't be fooled. I guess we should be better organized. I leave my cell on every listing for these meetings. Email: arkady@arkadyroytman.com

wow, it sounds like us New Yorkers are BIG TIME FLAKERS! anyways, im obviously no better.... my draw-a-thon never happened... I used to get together with a friend of mine from high scholl and sit at the tables at the virgin megastore... we just used to sit there for hours and draw.. great place to hang.. lots of cool books to look at plus theres music... just an idea... well, my friend has a loft in the city... So, maybe i could ask him if I could have a drawing session there... the place is pretty huge.. plus, if i could corridinate it properly maybe I could even get him to spin some beats for us (he's a dj/ music producer). Im supposed to be doing a mural in his crib and have been putting it off so, i figure if I show him something then he'd throw me a bone!

loomer
May 6th, 2005, 04:04 PM
that would be awesome vigostar- I have an 8-month yr. old at home, so it's a little tough for me to make some things, but if we had something - say monthly (for starters) - I would definetly make sure i was there. If your friend's crib would be available that would be sweet. I used to know alot of models in the city when i went to SVA - now I only know L.I. models, but perhaps I could try and seek out some fresh NY meat. That sounds awful...sorry

:nohope:

The NYers will get it together in time.... hopefully :\

ur an sva grad also? my best friend graduated from there about five years ago.. did grafic arts though... i have to talk to my friend and see what he says.. i really have to get cracking on that mural for him first.. gotta butter him up...

loomer
May 6th, 2005, 04:59 PM
Butter him! All the NY CA crew will come over and bust it out in 2 hours.
It'll either be a disaster ..or awesome.

- Yeah..I'm old - graduated in '99 Illustration major. I hear things are quite different there now....

goldenavatar
May 6th, 2005, 08:18 PM
loomer: Oddly enough, everyone I know who's graduated from SVA is saying the exact same thing & not in a good way. Know what I mean? That's kinda why I chose to go to school at BCC - CUNY & take my serious art instruction at the art students league. I'm not feeling bad about the decision.

Vigostar: Let folks know when this mural tihng is supposed to go down. I'll spread the word to folks I know, see if they're interested in the least.

I think the main thing that has alot of us flaking is we've got alot of energy sapping responsibilities already on our plate, whatever they are. At some point you become very selective & disinterested about what you'll put your energy into if you're not getting something out of it. Either way, the sketchbook group meets help you build social circles, so it's all good in the end, now, isn't it?

loomer
May 12th, 2005, 10:20 PM
NYer's - let's not give up all hope. What golden says is probably true for the most part...we all have a shitload on our plate already (that's a terrible image) so it's gonna be difficult getting anything together.

- I'm hoping when summer hits schedules will chill out a bit. My lil' sis has a sweet as place on the L.E.S. and I could probably convince her to let us use the place once or month or so...for a drawing group - crit group - circle jerk -whatever

- If you guys are still down, I say we keep it in the back of our minds and hopefully will get something off the ground one day.

Amish - I intend to get to the Society with you one day for Tuesday drawings...i'll let you know when I can get in the city. fuck long island

Last I knew the sketching group meets on Sundays, a friend of mine is looking to do saturday sketch group and I'm helping him organize it. My schedule is such that I can't promise I can attend either and it's only getting more spontaneous. Next month, if Amishcommy wants to, we'll be moving them from Sunday's to Saturday's and probably be meeting at Rockefeller Center's underground promenade seating area before strolling about from place to place to draw.

winjer, wizzap? Ninja Vanish on your part. I've been going to the Starbucks every sunday for the past few months. Jin was the only one showing up for a while. today, codakromek showed up and we mostly talked about photoshop instead of actually drawing. But we've all been skipping the Suway and anjoying nice days at the park. Today, eventhough it was hot as balls and there were a ton of places closed due to the PuertoRican Parade we spend the day at the Sheeps Meadow in the shade and it was good, ans long as you had a bottle of cold water with you. When Golden and i were planning the Subway thing out, we decised that Sunday was best because of Golden's Schedule. But i realy don't care because all i want is a bunch of people to show up. Saturday is good for me. As far as the lofation goes, we chose Penn Station becasue its kinda like a hub that allows people from Jersey and Brooklyn and quees easy acces to transportation. If more people are willing to meet at Rockerfeller then its fine by me. Next week we're meeting up at 1 peen plaza as usual. I may not be there for the first time but Jin and codakromek said they'll show up.

As far as SOI sessions go, show up early to get a good spot. and they are running them until July 22 and then stopping them for august. so come soon so you don't miss out.

Hey, folks,

I'm moving to New York (Long Island somewhere) in August, and will unfortunately be losing all my Los Angeles connections (except for the freelance rpg companies, which frankly don't really pay all that well). Does anyone here live in New York, and does anyone have suggestions about where I might go to look for art jobs, and what opportunity is out there? I hear that it ranks up there with Los Angeles as far as opportunity, but I'm not familiar with the city.

The only companies I'm aware of are Marvel and DC, which would actually be really cool to work at, since I used to do comic book work before I got into freelance illustration, and it was a lot of fun. Yes, I'm aware comics are a lot of work, but I'd probably only do one stage (penciling or inking or coloring or writing) and not ALL those jobs PLUS promoting, editing, production, etc., like I had to do when I self-published. So, actually, it would be easy compared to all that.

Oh, and to anyone living in SoCal...time to go, people. The big one is coming. I can feel it in my bones... That's not why I'm leaving, but now that I am, I'm glad, because I really feel that I pressed my luck staying this long.

Hey hey, I'm moving to New York in August as well. I'm from Austin and hopefully I'll be attending the School of Visual Arts in the fall. Like Zak, I'm not going to know anyone or have any connections to get a job (no, not an art job, that would be my dream, but you know, just a regular job), so if any of you guys have any leads...

Hey, guys... Im not sure if I would be any help with the artfield employment.. Im not employed by art.. i work for a law firm by day.... but, we could always try to help eachother out in way possible.. In NY there are tons of possibilities available... Tons... so, dont worry... you'll find yoour niche soion after you arrive...

Danomight- Unfortunately, the first night time drawing session didnt work out as planned but, Im going to give it another try... Im also going to try to convince my friend if I could hold it once in his loft which is better located... he lives by union square... We'll see what happens.. But, keep on checking these forums for updates..

on another note.. Loomer (who has just become a proud uncle) and I have are going to try and get soemthing else going before I try another night time drawing session.. something at a gallery or museum... I suggested Tuesdays nights at the society of illustrators.. the jazz session there I hear is fantastic.. pay a small fee and get to draw from models and listen to some cool jazz music while being amongst true illustrators...

anyways,, Loomer and I will keep you guys posted..

oh and BTW.. No one showed up for last friday nights event.. Thanks for those who contacted me (loomer)to let me know they were not going to make it.

ArtbyZak: This is mostly a copy/paste of what I said in response to vigostar in his prior posting incase the info is useful to anyone. If you're going to be living in the NYC metro boroughs it's going to be pretty tough for you to find an art job you'll want to stick with, if at all. If you're going to be hitting Nassau county on Long Island, you've got the folks in Sketchkult that you could tap on that end for what assistance they could direct you to. I'd also find out if any companies I worked for in LA, have offices or affiliates in NY who'd be interested in my skills. More likely than not though, you're going to probably be living off of your savings as soon as you get here like alot of folks tend to do.

I've never known any artist in the NYC area who failed to have a primary means of income in addition to their art skills. For example, a friend of mine who graduated from SVA with a BA in Illustration (I think), earns his living as a mover. Though I will say this much, you'll have more options if you've got a bachelors/associates degree, digital imaging skills, and a willingness to work with non-profit organizations. I see alot of them posting up art related jobs in the idealist.org job forum, so I'd suggest looking there and letting them drop mail into your inbox from time to time.

Vigostar: Union Square is alot more likely on my end, if my schedule permits. I'll definetly keep an eye out for that if it happens.

Danomight: If you want to meet folks, feel free to swing by any of the ECAU meets that pop up at Rockefeller center. Meet a few of your SVA peers and a few alumni.

Thanks for the link. I'll definitely try my best to get down there, although tomorrow is supposed to be insanely hot. Is it really the last session of the season?

they're starting it back up on September 13th. They're taking the hottest time of the summer off. last week it was packed to capacity so get there early if you want a good place to draw.

oh yeah, this is just rumours at this point, but some time in september they are gonna try to get a freakshow troup to come pose.

Cool Loomer.. I'll see you there tonight... If your planning on getting there early maybe you want to go up and grab two seats.... I personally would rather sit sort of in the back so that we can sketch the muscians as well..

Yeah, I joined 2 or 3 years ago. It's a great place -- truly a "sum of it's members" kind of place. If you want to see something happen, volunteer for it and it will more than likely happen. I'm helping to put on a Spectrum exhibit in September.

To really effect what the events and exhibits are, you'd need to be a member and then get involved. To be a member you have to go though an application process. However, I know they are often looking for help with stuff like running the sketch night - people to help set up and break down, and such. So, yes, if you'd like to help out, please ask!!

Good seeing everyone last night...nice to put a face to name, and even nicer to put a real name to a fake one.

Irene - good seeing you again and getting to talk illustration. But I must warn you i am coming for that Jon Foster painting! Hopefully I'll see you before the Halloween Sketch Night

winjer - thanks for posting your work..I don't know what you hate about it so much. I like that monkey king and the life drawing of the sleeping girl alot. You got plenty of time to develop your craft, and you just started SVA ..so don't hate your work...you got skillz bro!

vigostar- great to finally meet the man behind the vigo - and it's perfectly fine to create finished works in a sketchbook (it's just that I don't!)

Amish - beautiful life drawings and it was really cool to meet you finally. Stay in NYC - we'll hang and become famous illustrators :pump:

loomer - you are an asshole and i hate your guts. Die.

Irene, you were there and i missed you?!?!?! LIES!!!!!!!!!!!
(it's all because durring the long break, instead of hanging out with everyone, i had to run out to get more chips.)

gives me all the more reason to find a jobby job ASAP.

Good to see everyone as well and good to talk, as brief as it was anyways. Come out this Sunday or the Sunday after that for the Subway Sketch groups. I'm there every weekend at 1 Penn Plaza, hoping that someone new will show up.

Amish, dunno how much this interests ya, but I've already posted up for the sketchbook meets for August. I've got a physical on the 6th, and I'll probably need my weekends free for August, so I will hopefully be back in September, or whenever it starts to cool down. this heat is not my thing.

hey hey. I know this is kinda last minute notice, but because of a request from the only person that has been showing up religiously to the Subway Sketch Group (other then me), we're gonna meet up tomorrow, Saturday July 30th, at 1:30 at 1 Penn Plaza. Just moving to Saturday for this weekend only. Hope some of you can make it.

Hey guys. I just moved to Manhattan about a week ago and just wanted to say hi to everyone.

I'm movin out here from Austin, so it's quite a change, but I think I'm getting the hang of things.

Anyone got any info on the life drawing scene here? I e-mailed the Spring life drawing studio and they asked me to monitor the friday night sessions, but I'm not sure what all that entails. If it means collecting money and setting up lights or whatever then I'm down for it, but 12 bucks a session is crazy compared to the 5 dollar sessions around Austin.

If anyone wants to get together and draw some time, I'm down, I know maybe 3 people here in the city total so I'm looking for art buddies and just buddies in general too.

We've already posted it up in earnest so at this point it's just updates in regards to the month we're going to be in. Second, update that location son if you're in NY now! And lastly, what school are you attending and area you're living in right now. I'd suggest hitting a NYC area East Coast Artists Unite (http://www.ecau.net) meet, but it's fulla lazy bodies and they've long since stopped doing anything artsy as a group.

hey danomight. spring studio is alright. They have pretty decent models but i wouldnt want to be in that basement with 1 air conditioner in the 90 degree heat. Sva has one you can go to since youre gonna go there, and theres an open life drawing session at the art students league too. Thats $6 i think. there are probably more too.

Gloden Avatar - Thanks for the link, I'll check em out. Yeah, I know about the address, ha, I updated, feels weird, I still keep filling out papers with my old address. I'm living in southern Manhattan (right across from the statue of liberty ferry, battery park) for at least the next year, probably longer, it sucks to move around here, we (my girlfriend an I) had to haul stuff like a block to our apartment all day long, what a terrible day... I've been accepted to SVA, but sure enough, I don't have the funds to attend right away. Hopefully I can get a portfolio scholarship to help cover the rest of my tuition so I can attend in January, we'll see, I hear it's pretty hard to get. Now to search the thread for those life drawing times...

winjer - thanks for the heads up about Spring. It's suprisingly hot here, just as hot as Texas. Yeah, I'll probably not be able to do the art students league thing until January, when, hopefully, I'll be attending SVA. How do you like it there so far? I'm transfering, so if I end up there, I'll have a bunch of credits already.

What parts of NY do you guys live in?

Danomight: No prob, bob & take your time. Battery Park City though, man you're diggin' in way down there, now aren't ya. I hope you and the wife enjoy NYC while you're here. Lots to see, it's just motivating and organizing to make it to the sights on top of any responsibilities you've got, that'll get'cha. How much is SVA tuition running nowadays anyways? It's been 5+ years since I saw info on them.
