I'm in Sunny San Francisco...well It's sunny when in principal, EVERY DAY EVEN, but all the bloody fog tends to hide most of it. I think we need to get a bit more active here on the ol' Northern California list. I don’t suppose there’s any chance of wanting to meet up in the really real world sometime? The workshop was great, not only for the chance to meet all my hero’s but all of you guys as well. But once just isn’t enough. I NEED MORE!!!

Oh, and I'd like your 2 cents please...

Downtown san francisco, another AAU student.

Have you guys ever gotten around to meeting for some kind of sketch session? A get together with some CA talent sounds pretty cool.

I go sketching with some of my friends some times. We usually go to borders, or union square, even the Apple store can be a good place to sketch when they have a band playing. And that's right, there are like two starbucks on every block.

I'd like to try going to the zoo on one of the free days, i haven't been there and i usually hate zoos..but i feel like drawing aminals.. but whatever, we wouldn't need to do something like every AAU student always does- legion of honor, for every field trip of every class every semester..:P

improv comics group

howdy, y'all
yes, yes, i know i havnt posted in a very, very long time. so sue me.

so, im here to let you know about this group a buddy of mine and i started. its called "jam comics" (cheesy name, yes i know). essentially what we do is we all meet at a cafre and do improv comics- lets say, i draw panel one ona page. someone else inks it, or draws another panel. last time we had a stack of unfinished pages (each mini-story is a page long) in the center and youd grab one and work on it.
we just started a week ago and had some friggen' awesome turnout- as well as some seriously awesome artists.its a friggen' good way for some (artistic) excersise. it was great. we're having our next meeting this thursday, dec. 2nd at canvas cafe and gallery at 9th and lincoln in san francisco, from 6-10 pm. (possibly later) id love to see some conceptart.org kids out there as ive only met a couple.
after we have a few more meetings were going to make a compilation of the pages that are finished and get a table at APE (alternative press expo) and sell them, or whatever.
heres the site from the origianal group in minneapolis:
http://www.cartoonistconspiracy.com/

PM me or email me with any questions. all you have to bring is supplies (pens and stuff, we'll have regular printer paper) and maybe some some comics to check out while drawing.canvas cafe has good food, good coffee, and , most importantly, a full bar. you dont have to be there for the full time but if you could that would be awesome.
cmon- you know you wanna.

Wattup Northern Cali folks,

I'm in the east bay...San Leandro to be exact.

Since I'm here, I just wanted to let those interested know of the Palo Alto life drawing tonite. My friends said it's $5 from about 7-10. There's more info here: http://www.artistresource.org/lifedraw.htm

But don't quote me, cuz it looks like the site hasn't been updated for a LONG time...

This is the closest place I know of without having to venture out to my alma mater (SJSU).

Any takers?

P.S. Sketching trips? Please keep me posted on the sketching trips as well

ratatouille,

Yeah, thanks for the info. Even though I planned on going this past Tuesday, I couldn't make it. Some classmates did though, and they said it was PACKED. That, plus what you said and what I remember from being there last time, it sounds like it's grown really popular.

The marathon sounds like a good idea...it's local and I might finally put money to good use. Not to mention, I could use the practice painting.

Thanks for the info!

P.S. Your homepage: an e-bay link? Have any traditional 2d work posted?

PA Tuesday Figure Drawing (Drawing starts at 7:15 and ends at 9:45. doors open at 7pm. ): i regularly go to the Palo Alto figure drawing sessions (i know at least one other person from this forum also attends frequently). all of ratatouille information is current and correct. I guess its all a mater of personal taste but i was able to eventually (after a couple weeks of trial and error) find some comfortable spots (to my taste). they've got tables at two different heights and some easels you can squeeze in the corners (no horses though) and a variety of cushions and books to prop up your board (kinda lame). its gotten pretty crowded over the last couple months so you need to get there early (before 7) to get a good spot (if not you'll have very little chance of getting anything but a complete crap spot). I personally hate when they have two models. its hard enough to draw one.

Drawing Marathons: to clarify there are two bay area drawing marathons. they each happen about once every two months. the supposedly schedule them so they alternate but sometimes they ignorantly happen on the same day.

January 30th @ Palo Alto Art Center (buried in the "Adult" pdf) (http://www.paenjoy.org)
Febuary 6th @ Merritt College (Organized by BAMG - they've got a mailing list for their marathon) (http://bayareamodelsguild.tripod.com/marathon.html)

Howdy everyone

--I go to the Palo Alto sessions as often as I can, almost every week. It has been very crowded the past few weeks for some reason, but it's been like that before and it always fluctuates. I usually get there at 7 and grab a spot at a table. It's perfect for me, 'cause I'd rather stand than fuck up my back sitting on one of those damned horses.

--I would be down for any kind of sketch session. Isn't there anyone with the authority gene in the area?

--Layil--You *decided* to move here from Barcelona? I was lucky enough to stay at a house right on the "beach" there for a week last summer, and it was tough to leave. I'll trade you houses(in my dreams)?

--I'm moving up to Eugene, OR in a couple of weeks so now's the time.

Did anyone find anything interesting?

I dodged Bud Plant's books but still managed to leave the con with the Claire Wendling book "Drawers 2.0" and "the Art of Silver" by Stephen Silver.

Two great books, but I'm wondering if there's anything out there I missed...anyone?

Hey SF artists. Like I said somewhere in this thread I'm a Art Institute student here and would love to hook up with you crazy people. I started looking into space to meet and what the rates for live models were etc. and realized.. uhh we're artists man.. we can entertain ourselves. hah! So I say we just meet up somewhere like the zoo, GGP, or the beach or whatever and start drawin. The only thing that it will ever cost us is the 1.25 for muni.

How many people would be interested? Personally I can't wait to meet other talent, something like March 12th?? :)

EDIT: A bit late but welcome to SF Wes + Steak!

thanks for the welcome Kazz, If you're looking to hang out the world-wide sketch crawl is on the 6th. I think it meets at noon or so in union square but check the lounge for the info. I'm definetly going to try and make it (right down the street from my place) and wes said he might go. Sounds like alot of fun.

Hello everybody!
I have a younger brother who is interested in jobshadowing a concept artist. He's a senior at Piedmont High School near Oakland and a student of the AP Art class. He is especially interested in concept art for the film industry, but is also enthusiastic about illustration, gaming art etc. He needs spend a day with an artist at work, although a couple hours would be enough. Anybody in the SF bay area who could help would be very much appreciated. Let me know ASAP. Also, for anyone who is posting, a brief description of what you do would help alot.
Thanks!

Hey everyone, I'm new to this site but I think it's a sweet deal. I live in Oakland and I'm a senior at CCAC. I was lucky enough to have s.f.'s own n8vandyke as a substitiute teacher once, made me want to quit drawing at first but eventually I got over it and just found his art inspirational. I have a website but I can't figure out how to post images from it yet because it's all constructed in flash. If anyone knows how I can do that it would be great because I'm lost.

reviving the nor cal thread... recently moved to SF (like, uh, 2 days ago) and looking for a decent public life drawing session/class/thing...

the ONLY life drawing opportunity where i used to live in san luis obispo was so dead.. they had maybe 5 or 6 people attend per session, sometimes these two old guys would come in and just stare... and not draw... AT ALL.. and the other artists were all like 20 years older than i am (no student aged people ever showed up) so it was hard to identify with the people at all...

and they never varied their models, always middle aged women.. no men, no older/younger people.. EVER..

any recommendations?

I still get them for free because I have school, but Google would be the place I start if I were to look for a workshop. Bay Area figure drawing info : :

I think some of this has already been posted (I know i did awhile back) but...

There is a huge list of Bay area figure modeling sessions at http://www.artistresource.org/lifedraw.htm (some seem to be outdated. some are still ongoing - PA, SOMA)

Also there are two groups that put on figure drawing marathons about every two months....
Oakland - http://bayareamodelsguild.tripod.com/
Palo Alto - until recently http://www.paenjoy.org/. But now this site doesn't seem to list them anymore. The next one is on the Nov. 20th. I think I overheard someone saying they might stop having the PA marathons cause attendance has been slumping of late. I'd encourage some of you to show up to the next one so we don't loose it for good.

The Figure session in the Mission is pretty cool, it's 10 bones but there's free wine and the model's are usually pretty good. Unfortunately the lighting isn't the best.

But there's also one on saturday mornings from 10-1 for $5 at the SOMArts center on 9th and Brannen. The room is not big enough but it's a decent session. I think I'm going to try and go tomorrow... if i wake up :)

If anyone else has been to another one lets hear it!

i live in a dangerous industrial neighborhood (west oakland) and i never have any problems... people tend to leave artists alone by and large i think. regardless, during the day and in a group, we wont have anything to worry about. Getting down there can be a pain in the ass though, so we should find someone with a car to get us down there.

any volunteers? cmon, with the gorgeous weather we've been having, theres factories just screaming to be painted.

alternately, theres some nice places by me, and easier to get to perhaps...
just a thought.

I'm looking into renting an art studio in the near future and am looking for another CA.org artist or two to share the space with. Possibly West Oakland/Emeryville, or somewhere in the City. My own needs include a well lit space that's large enough to step back from a painting without bumping into your station. I could pay up to $200 (I could go solo, but I like company and saving expenses and can probably get us a space for roughly $150/mo each). I could check into finding a partner or two on craigslist, but I much rather have a CA member for a studiomate(s). Aside from my own studio furniture, common items will include a small fridge, a coffee station, and possibly a couch. I'd like to have a space large enough to accommodate a model once in a while and perhaps we can invite other CA members for sketch sessions to help with costs.

If any of you are interested, please contact me at Dutton177@gmail.com.

Hey, I'm in Davis (like twenty minutes from Sacramento). I go down to San Francisco for the Sketchcrawls. Davis is pretty barren for anything except fine-art/agricultural painting (we've got Wayne Thiebaud teaching at UCD though, and he lets people audit, so I may do that in fall), so if anyone was serious about starting up a concept/illo sketch group in SF on a monthly/semi-monthly basis, I would totally make the drive/train ride and show up.

Especially a zoo trip. The SF zoo is a little too specific for a sketchcrawl, but I'm dying to get out there and draw with a group.

Greetings all I am an Artist for the last 30 Plus years I have A.A. in find arts I like in Sacramneto CA but started my artistic life in the Central vally area on Merced CA. I mostly started with pen and ink and paints but wanted to move computer art as far back s my fire year in college back in 79 but of corse there wwas a small problem of no graphic software much less a computer to work on that wan't have the size of a small building.

I was shot down on working with computers back in 1979 but taught my self and blended fine art with digtal as tech grew. I do mostly scifi and fantasy work as well as abstracted work I call chaos art .

I started my early computer work in the early 80's and 90's with the amiga computers and Delux Paint from EA and lucked out that one of my teacher was Joel Hagen a master of D-Paint and later one of the first to adaped to photoshop on the Mac.

I later work worked with first run of PS and the video toster on the amiga as well a Lightwave 3D and met and became friend with it writer Allen Hastings.

I studyed Art and computers and became a Tech as well as sculptor and digtal artist and call my self a cyber artist starting early 1990.

I did most of my work localy to the central vally but most has escaped to parts unkowned.

I work with PC for my art as of now working with 98 se and Xp pro on home system and a newly added IBM Thinkpad A31 and a Wacom Inturo2 graphic tablet 12x18.

I work with many programs but love Painter and started with verson 4 and now have 4 to 9 set up for cross over work as well as Photoshop 6 ,7and cs2

my art can be seen here as right now:

http://thecyberartist.blogspot.com/

http://www.picturejungle.com/store/brandlist.asp?media=&ID=1511

I plan of getting more my current and old work posted soon as I want to scan in some of my early pen and ink work to save it from fading and lost due to age.

I hope to post some of works in progress as well as finnshed work on here soon.

thanks

The gnomon thing was pretty cool. Especially interesting watching the ubisoft montreal guys doing their thing. It was like a crazy tag team session, speed painting. Hong's lecture on character design was really instructional. The gears of war lecture was incredible. Game play wise, I think Gears of war is going to be another standard fps, but art wise it will be pretty amazing. As far as concept artists are concerned Hawkprey has some really fun designs. The coolest thing is, you can see the improvement he has made through the years and its really inspiring. Back onto Gears of War, The shading network system they have for the artists was awesome. The freedom was just Wow. $125 bucks well spent. Thanks Gnomon.

But LAX is the Suck. Shittiest airport in the US. The police/TSA people need to smoke a mandatory joint every half hour or something. Cool.

Anyone wanna try to meet this weekend? My cell phone died so apologies to Jedmo. Wizard of Koz:I think Cup Of Joe would be a great hangout/sketch spot. Other places we could possible meet could be Union Square, maybe the Wharf (if it's warm we'd have a lot of people to draw)? I'm open to any suggestions. Hopefully I'll have my cell phone problem resolved by then.

I'll keep an eye on the thread.

Hey everyone:

I was there from 2 -3 last Saturday, but I just figured stuff came up. It wasn't a waste cause I still got some sketching done. Since the weather was good, a lot of people were out so I had a lot of folks to quick sketch. I'm not sure about this weekend, but maybe we can all hook up later. Let me know what's up when you can.

Hey all, I'm thinking of checking out the De Young Museum on Tuesday since its free admission day. I might also hit the MoMA too. Anybody want to join me? Also, Thursday is the First Thursday open gallery night that I'm planning on hitting up. Might be cool to meet up with some other CA'ers, get some free wine and check out the art. Anyway, let me know.

Down around Union Square I believe. Here's a website I found that has a list of the participating galleries: http://www.artist-at-large.com/sfgalleries3.htm

Guess I'll do as the website suggests and start at 49 Geary and just follow the crowd as I go. Probably not the greatest plan but I'm sure it'll work out.

Hey, anyone interested in doing a Sketchcrawl on Saturday the 23rd? More info over in this thread (http://www.sketchcrawl.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=988) on the Sketchcrawl forums. Looks like we'll be meeting up in the city and then taking the ferry over to Sausalito, taking time to draw along the way.

I'll be the girl with a rendition of this guy (http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Film/Pix/gallery/2005/10/10/rex300.jpg) on my messenger bag. Say hi if you make it!

I've got work that night at 5 so I'll have to bail on the crawl early but I'm looking forward to it. Hope to see some of you guys out.

So I've been trying all week to come up with a good spot to try and stage a get together this weekend. So since no one has much input I'm going to go ahead and say we'll start out at Cup o' Joe (leavenworth and sutter) at 2ish this Saturday (the 30th). We'll start out there and we can maybe migrate down to Union Square and draw people down there if the weather is nice. Sound good to everyone else? Also, I dont know if many of you ride bikes but Critical Mass is this Friday, 6pm at Market and Embarcadero. Not really a drawing event but it would be cool to ride with some CA folks, maybe grab a pint and do some sketching afterwards. Hope to see some of you all this weekend.

Hey Character, I haven't got much info about Santa Cruz, but these guys in San Francisco proper do occasional SF weekend meets.

The December 9th sketchmeet is going to be at the San Francisco Zoo, and is part of a way bigger group called Sketchcrawl. There are a ton of groups all over the world who will turn out to go sketching on the 9th - groups in Germany, Japan, Hawaii, Mexico, etc. Exact times for meetup at the zoo haven't been decided yet, but things should start to gear up in the next couple of weeks. Drop a post in the San Francisco thread on this forum and check back!

I'll post more info here as the Sketchcrawl stuff gets finalized.

Insomania needs volunteers!

any of you guys living in SF got a bit of spare time and want to lend a hand?

we need a couple people to go around and hit the local galleries, art supply stores, book stores, art cafes, schools and museums and leave INSOMANIA flyers and hang posters. its maybe an afternoon of work, maybe two, and can be done on your schedule, but it needs to be done QUICK!! Gnomon is kicking our butts, having a workshop two weeks before ours, and we need to get those sign ups if we're gonna be able to do Florence next year.

PM me if you wanna help, or know someone who does.

thanks!!

Hey I heard back from the San Francisco zoo on their group rates for the Sketchcrawl this weekend, which are the following:

Adults (18-64) - $9.00
Youths (12-17) - $4.50
Seniors (65 and up) - $4.50

and if there happens to be a kid under twelve attending, their admission will be $2.50.

ok so they found it this morning. i have to go pick it up in a few but with that out of the way im sure we can organize something for late january. preferebly on the weekend. do oyu know a lot of people interested? im sure i can generate a small group from my school and bring some friends down. sf would be cool just because of the overall diversity which the city has but it can get pretty cold/windy right now along w the hassle of getting around. but drawing bums in the TL would be interesting. i knew of a few friends who use to buy coffee for them in exchange for using them for portraits. anyway yea monterey still sounds cool. ill drive down for sure. i suppose we should leave this open for a few to try n generate something bigger. after all, this site is based out of northern ca.
