not to steal the sf workshops thunder but there are some figure drawing sessions in the eastbay at cal campus on fri/sat as well. on the flipside they are far from being as cool. the atlier community is really nice to work with, very inspiring just to be around... awsome atmosphere, cool people music etc.

hey, how is that sf its supposed to be the center of conceptart, an awesome city, it has inside animation studios, great art schools...etc and this thread its really dead, i dont understand it
ghūl
May 19th, 2007, 07:04 PM
yeah it does seem dead, I wonder how the Open Sessions on Saturday are going? As soon as I can convince my boss to get Saturdays off I'll definitely be right back in there. But it would be nice to go out with a group to the museum or the aquarium from time to time to brush up on the skills.

I just found out about this workshop, I'm SO there. I just moved to SF from LA to attend AAU, and so far I haven't really found a group of artist friends to hang out with... I'm stuck with a few lower division/foundations classes at the moment and I feel like I am surrounded by a lot of half-assed students. But it's summer break, I'm looking for a job and things to do around town to hone my skills... anybody have any leads? I have 11 years of footwear design experience :nohope:.
Character, sounds like you have been to the late night Life Drawing Speakeasy in Downtown Los Angeles? Awesome, I used to go there every week. I'm sure you know that the girls are coming down next month to San Francisco? If you guys are interested, it is a really cool deal, I went to the last one they had in SF, though I did miss the LA DJ spinning all his goth/indurstrial music. Here's the info in case you guys are interested:
The Gallery Girls Present another "Hades in San Francisco"
Theme is - The Roaring 20's Brothel
Saturday, June 23rd from 8pm till 12am
1198 Fulton Street, San Francisco, CA 94117
This is a drawing workshop in a beautiful 5 story Victorian mansion with authentic Victorian furniture.
Festivities include Drawing, Wine, Snacks, a Hookah Bar in the tower overlooking a 360 degree view of San Fransisco and of course fun & debauchery for all!
Multiple Rooms and many models in authentic costumes or partially nude.
Everything for only $20.00 ! ! !
Let me know if you are interested. I can send you a list of places to stay if you are coming from out side of San Fran.
Also, Spread the word. This is our second of many to come. The first event was a blast and made quite an impression on the artists from the city.
Thanks and hope you make it.

is there a website we can find any more information from?
Hey! I don't think they ever got a site up, but here are some pics of some of the events in LA. It's pricey, but I think it's worth it since they provide food, wine, and tobacco and it's at this amazingly beautiful victorian mansion. I'm not certain if they will have a DJ this time around as they usually do in LA, though. Also, it tends to run late into the night as well, despite the fact that it says that it ends at 12am just as long as there are people to draw, they pose.

thanks for the info! do u have any idea how packed it will get?
jubjubjedi
May 28th, 2007, 03:07 PM
I couldn't tell you, this is only the second time they will be doing this in SF. It wasn't packed at all the first time, most people where there just to hang out and schmooze and there are multiple poses going on at the same time. To me, it's more of a sketchbook type vibe because you are in a situation that is not a studio, but I did see some people there with larger sketch pads that made do with the existing furniture. We sat on sofas and various furniture that was in the house, they had no easels or that sorta thing. It's very informal. The place, btw, is called the Westerfeld House, a historical Gothic-revival-style victorian house on Fulton st.

Local Event, THIS THURSDAY!
I'm submitting a bunch of my figure drawings from the atelier. i figure ive shot them for reference and theyll be nigh obsolete soon enough anyway, so i might as well send some out into the world.... anybody got a bunch of art collecting dust? this might be a good way for you to get your stuff out where others can see it!
:)
Subject: [Happylandish] DAte Snafu ARt liberation June 7th
There is still time to join in!!!! I accidentally gave the date for
the show as the 1rst. The first what you might ask.... So here is the
revised skinny. Hope to see you all.
Art Liberation Day.
First Thursday of June 7th
49 1/2 Geary St.
Downtown SanFrancisco
5PM till 8pM
The New and improved Artvan is back, bigger and badder than ever
before, with a series of exhibits starting with the ever popular Art
Liberation Day.
In keeping with the Buddhist Philosophy of dana prajana paramita, which
means, "to give is to crossover", ArtVanSF will engage in selfless and
spiritual acts of art sacrifice, providing admirers with gifts of visual
endowments.
ArtVanSF has a mainline to the best emerging artists in the Bay Area. We
don't have a snooty address, so we'll be parking our new bio-diesel
friendly art rig right outside
the front doors of the major galleries on the FIRST Thursday of June
(the 7th). Just to subvert the
gallery paradigm, we'll be liberating truly valuable art, bestowing
fabulous, valuable, original pieces upon those who truly love them.
Because
that's what art is for, dammit.
The goal is to create room for more creativity in the world while
bestowing
upon devotees gifts of beauty and transcendence... and frankly, we
hope to
mess with the heads of the downtown galleries by defying their
consumerism
and arbitrary value system . And we're going to do it on their own
turf, too.
We will be parking our Art Van in close proximity to the major downtown
galleries. We will be stepping on toes while showing the truly
valuable art
of emerging artists in the nose of those whose noses fly so high.
SO if you'd like to play along with us please contact me or David and
arrange to drop off a piece or three of the artwork that is choking
you out of studio space and recharge your karmatic engines. We
guarantee your creative spirit will get a supercharged spiritual
boost by participating in this landmark event!
Artwork still needed for the 7th semiannual Art Liberation Day.
Contact brettt at 415-609-9774
or David at 415-640-5041
Please forward to artists and art lovers

Christ, is nothing happening in this city??
Just to let some of you city-sketchers know, I've been hanging out at a place in the Mission by the name of Cafe Revolution, on 22nd and Bartlett (btwn. Mission and Valencia). It's a cool open-air Euro-style cafe that serves coffee and alcoholic drinks, as well as food. Best thing about it is their almost daily live music, jazz usually, often in the afternoon and the evening. It's a nice place to hang out and sketch. Best come in the afternoon/early evening as it can get pretty noisy and crowded in the evenings. Hope to see some of you guys there sketching away!!

Mill Valley Life Drawing Figure Sessions
If any of you are willing to hop over the bridge, Mill Valley Art and Paper does some great life drawing. It's $17 for a 3 hour (2 week) pose on Saturdays from 9-12 am and a normal 3 hour session on Mondays from 7-10 pm. I almost always go to the Saturday session and sometimes the Monday. They're really great and small so you can see well and have a good space to work. It'd be nice to see some CA'ers over there.

Well, I live in San Diego right now, but I was born and raised in the View, so I guess you know where my loyalties lie. I'm still confusing people all the time with calls of "the City," as though it was the only worth mentioning. So yeah, you can throw my name up on the list.

I had a ton of fun at life drawing today! The whole thing felt like something from the matrix for some reason... it was probably because of the appearance of the place, the music, the poses, and the guns. Man the atelier is awesome! I want to know where they got that skull! The poses were way more dynamic and cool than at the life drawing sessions I normally go to. All together it made an awesome impression.

While the Art and History sections of the Oakland Museum of California are going through renovations, you can still enjoy an afternoon of sketching a rich variety of birds, sea animals, and other carefully posed and well-preserved critters in their Natural Sciences gallery.
The gallery a good way to see local plants and animals up close and personal without exposing yourself to the elements or zoo cafeteria food. They also have an outdoor terrace and courtyard with several monumental sculptures that might inspire some light and shadow and materials studies.
The museum is about a block away from the Lake Merritt BART station and has a parking garage ($1/hr). Admission is only $6 for adults through 2009. The cafe has good food, but bring your own lunch or snacks if you're on a budget. Also note that the lights in the Natural Sciences gallery get hot, so you may want to shed a few layers before getting too deep into sketching. They also have lockers available to the public.

wuttupeeps!, I checked out the SF LD session and drew a mean sketch or two. Good Stuff! A:P anywayz, good model, good drawings, good times. Although ironically I made the pilgrimage to meet/greet/skeet (sketch for rhymes sake) and I didnt really meet or greet any peeps. Lameicus I was for first time introductions, but no matter. Good drawin' was had.
Now for any of you's not quite so North bay:
This is sponsored by an illustration/animation club (shrunkenhead) at San Jose State. I havent gone yet, but will, and thought Id share:
Figure drawing is $3.00 per session or $75.00 per semester. Anyone is welcome to attend. I believe this schedule is accurate:
Mondays 6:30pm to 9:30pm - Art 314
-Thursdays 6:30pm to 9:30pm - Art 337
-Fridays 2:00pm to 5:00pm - Art 337
That's the Art building, 3rd floor, room 314, then 337 the other two days. If by any chance the rooms are switched on a particular night, it's just down the hall and you'll see a lot of people.

SHOW UP 15-20mins early. While there is essentially unlimited spaces there is a very limited number of horses, easels, and chairs. Also a good number of the Art/Illustraton student base shows up, so the room fills up FAST.

Herr Dobsky has deemed the Saturday Open sessions DISCONTINUTED for the forseeable future.
the reason we started doing this was to raise extra money for the school and with the attendance we've been getting, we're barely breaking even. the students are also wanting full use of the space, so Carl has decided that we're not doing the drawing sessions any more.
sorry folks. it was fun while it lasted.
i may, in the future, start up another one of these on my own outside the school, so keep an eye here and i'll announce it when the time comes.
in the mean time, lets make an effort to meet up at some other drawing session. it was a good crew we had going there for a minute.
thanks to everyone who attended, especially the core group that showed up almost every week. i for one, will miss these...
RIP Open sessions

Wow, that's too bad about the CA open sessions. Thanks for posting the open session at goforaloop, Nonie.
The BAMG marathon was PHENOMENAL! I stayed the whole day.

I'm wondering if it might be cool to start an S.F./East Bay critter sketch group. Off the top of my head we have the following venues:
Oakland Museum of California natural history exhibit
Oakland Zoo
Lake Merritt (bird sanctuary)
Little Farm at Tilden Park
California Academy of Sciences
Aquarium of the Bay (Pier 39)
Golden Gate Park (I think they have buffalo there)
San Francisco Zoo
Point Isabel (doggie park)
I've never been to a sketch crawl or other semi-organized sketch outing, but they seem to be driven by word of mouth and a bit of online promotion.
Any thoughts on this?

Hey everyone in or around Santa Rosa, I decided to start a Meetup group to get like-minded people together for the sake of art. If anyone is interested, sign up for the meeting. I have no idea whether or not this will fly, but it's worth a shot...

Hey there!
I'm going to be in San Francisco in a few weeks time and was wondering if some of you SF types could give me some leftfield suggestions as to things I can see and do while I'm there. I'm obviously going to check out the big touristy things but it'd be good to get some recommendations for some more obscure little gems.
Any info gratefully received.
Cheers!
Nick.

Anyone who wants to chill out and sketch, my email's sidchagan@gmail.com. Hope to hear from someone!
Also, is anyone from SF planning to attend Reverie? I'm looking for people to make the trip with, probably leaving soon after my afternoon class on March 27th.

Hey I just found this great Life Drawing session if anyone wants to join in. It's only like 10 minutes from where the MB ones were so it shouldn't be too much of a change.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get something started up with this again. I'M LOOKING TO START A DRAWING GROUP IN EITHER SAN FRANCISCO OR MARIN. This could be as simple as going to the park and sketching, or to a coffee shop, museum, whatever. PLEASE pm me if you're interested.

Well, it's good to see that Northern Californians are still trying to gather.
I'm stuck up in Sacramento. Haha, I don't think I could manage a 2-3 hour drive every week. I might be able to do something once a month, but even that's stretching it at the moment.
Good luck guys, SF seems like it would be a pretty decent hot spot for artists. At least IMO it would, but what do I know?
