TheDirtSyndicate

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This coming tuesday there's going to be a figure drawing gig going in downtown LA. Apparently they've been doing on tuesdays regularly for the past 4 years. A model gave me the details so I'll forward them here.

1275 East 6th street

The model told me that there's a "big red door" whatever that means.

It's in downtown LA, from 10 PM to 2 AM on tuesdays.
There's a bar in the building so figure drawing while drunk is an option!

Cheers.

not really much of a secret now....but yeah, its a great group.
i just got back from it tonight. the theme was kinda lame this week :"adam and eve"
got a few good sketches tho.

im tired. off to bed.

The show opens Sept. 8 and runs through Oct. 8th. It should be insane -so many sick artists are in it, Brendan Monroe, Sylvia Ji, Chet Zar, Derek Hess just to mention a few and an installation by the always awesome Audrey Kawasaki. Check out the flyer here (http://www.sourharvest.com/thinkspace/images/Thinkspace_sept_postcard.jpg)

Trevor's is quite simple and casual. And by casual, I mean that usually things deteriorate into a knife fight where someone ends up being called a nancy and most people leave crying.

If you need crits, I'm sure we can accommodate!

Hey all,

Thought I'd pass this along to anyone else interested in a free one and a half hours of figure drawing on Monday. I've been emailing around on Craigslist for jobs and this came up-here's the email I got back copied directly:

We will be filming on Monday, Jan. 19th, most likely in West LA from
2pm - 4pm. (I am just making final arrangements with the art studio
and can confirm with you after that.) We would love to have you come
to the class! There will be a nude model there, and we'll be bringing
some supplies but if you would like to bring your own, that would be
great!

There will be some interuption in the class for the purpose our
filming, but it will be fun and (hopefully!) funny. :)
-----

I talked with them and it's located in West LA and the finalized time is 1:30-3PM. They said bring friends, if I care to (looking for collegeish age) so I thought I'd pass it along. Shoot me an email at thebulfrog@gmail.com if you're interested. Should be fun.

So I just moved here and wanted to figure out where there's figure drawing in this city. Here's what I found:

Dr. Sketchy (http://www.myspace.com/dr_sketchy_losangeles) - every other Sunday, $10 - looks like a fun scene
Lynn Studio (http://www.laaa.org/calendar/workshops.html) - Wednesdays, 7p to 10p - $7
Avenue 50 Studio (http://www.avenue50studio.com/pages/figure1.shtml) - Tuesday, 7pm to 10pm - $10
The Drawing Club (http://www.thedrawingclub.com/home.asp) - 7-10 Thursday $20; one Sunday a month 10am-1pm (a bit steep for me, but short poses and costumed for those interested)
List of more figure drawing classes around town (http://art.blogging.la/archives/2005/08/life_drawing_cl_1.phtml) - got some of links from here

Does anyone know what the deal at the Animator's Union is? I think it's only two month long classes (not drop ins)
Does the Illustrator's guild do anything around here? (In NY there was a Jazz & figure drawing 3 hour session every week at the SoI where a few CAers would meet up)
Also is there any figure drawing at USC, UCLA, cal-state or any other colleges around the area? Free would be nice. Cheap would be nice too.

While I'm at it, here's some other good links for people looking for art related things to do around town-

art.blogging.la (http://art.blogging.la/) - Blog on art events around LA
50 mml Los Angeles (http://www.50mmlosangeles.com/events.php) - list of art gallery openings and the ilk
LA.com's art listing (http://www.la.com/events/art)

calendarlive.com (http://www.calendarlive.com/galleriesandmuseums/search-events.front?categories=cl-art*&regComm=&size=40&eventSortOrder=date&x=17&y=12) - LA Time's art happenings list
losanjealous.com/events/ (http://www.losanjealous.com/events/) - The Losanjealous Benevolent Society gathers a list of strange happenings and fun events in LA - the more bizarre, the better.
Comedy Clubs (http://www.10best.com/Los_Angeles/Nightlife/Comedy_Clubs/index.html) - ok, not art, but still fun.
Music Concerts (http://www.laweekly.com/music/) - still not art, but might as well even out the comedy

This is all from a fairly brief google search. I'd love to hear where other's are finding out what's going on around this town.

Here is the plan "OC group" I live in Irvine and would like to open a gallery in a high traffic street front retail space close by(costa mesa, NB, Balboa, HB, maybe LBC). What I need you all for is to sublease a chunck of the wall to sell your own art. I'm 24, work full time and into low brow, kustom kulture art. I have Mondays and Tuesdays off. My goal is to have 10 - 20 local artist be silent partners all selling their own art on set schedules. You wouldn't pay me any commission just rent around $100 monthly( depending on location). I plan on selling my own. I haven't seen anything like this and I think it could do really well. I'm open to suggestions and would like your feed back.

hey guys whats up? been awhile since i posted here.
i'd like to start a drawing group in my area.

anyone interested in meeting in the Pacific Palisades?

right across the street from where i live, we've got this sweet clubhouse that overlooks the ocean. theres a pool table, bbq pits, heated swimming pool and hot tub, and its got its own kitchen.
the place is nice and big with about 4 couches and a couple tables with chairs to sit and draw at, also places to sit outside and draw.
on top of that, if we take a 2minute walk up the hill, theres a bench on top of the ridge with a 180* panorama of unobstructed ocean view.

im not sure when the best time would be to have this thing... i sometimes dont get off work until 8 or 9... and my girlfriend and i like to travel if we can on the weekends...
maybe it could be a specific weeknight, from like 8 to 10?
in our neighborhood all the neighbors are in their 80's, so the place should be empty by 8pm... they'd mostly be asleep by then. haha

well, if there's any interest, let me know so we can plan something.
if not a drawing group, maybe a BBQ/swim party thing.

hey all, some coworkers and people ive bumped into around the coffee houses here are talking about starting a once or twice a week get together. i currently am usually drawing at the gypsy den at the lab most saturday and sunday afternoons. a couple people have expressed interest in drawing at milk and honey at the camp or this boba place down the street from there. but i figure bouncing around bristol for the most part would give a good variety of people to draw and places to try out. then later on if we feel like settling down we can stick to one spot, or we could stay nomadic.

anyway, i was thinking of starting this up next week, maybe saturday at milk and honey. im going to check it out first and post up some more before hand. but it sounds like this is a decent middle ground for most people. its right off of the 405 and pretty easy to find.

pm me if there are certain nights of the week that would be better for you and if you have any other suggestions of places we could check out. and tomorrow i think im going to try and meet up with you guys at mcCains. i dont drive so it will be dependant on if i can get some folks from work to come on out with me.

so yeah, hit me up, and lets get some sessions going finally

I'm in, I live in the southern Orange County area and know exactly where that is. I'll send you a PM.

Also, I'm looking for fellow artists who want to car pool with me (I'm driving) up to the The Drawing Club's (http://www.thedrawingclub.com/) weekly drawing sessions every Thursday, and monthly long pose once a month of Sundays. It's a long drive, but well worth it. The sessions are $20, but the models are excellent and in costume, they have lots of props, excellent lighting setups, and even appropriate mood music. I'll be looking for some gas money (around $2) from anyone who wants to tag along.

So, if anyone lives in the Orange County area and wants to come, send me a PM.

dude, drawing club sounds awesome. i would be down for going with you once or twice a month for sure, and once i get this dental work out of the way and dont have to worry about those bills i will be down all the time :D

ok, so, for those close enough to the costa mesa santa ana border, on bristol there is a place called milk and honey, its nice little coffee shop at the camp(earthy mall place across from the lab). i went there for a while tonight and it has a chill little atmosphere. the seating area is pretty small, but they said people dont really come in and hang out, its more of a grab stuff and go back to work type of place. they seemed hyped on having a group just hanging out and drawing so this saturday i am thinking i will go there around 4ish. then whoever wants to trickle in can pop through and say what up and chill and draw.

here is my # for people that want it for some reason
707 616 2485

did i mention the seating area is in a garden type environment, kind of awesome. and i saw a couple outlets too, so its laptop friendly, might be a little bright during the day but it closes at 11 on the weekends

It's been a while since I've been active on this site and thought I would come out of hiding. I used to be pretty active with the Seattle group when I lived there a couple of years ago, but am now looking for some community drawing opportunities here in LA. It looks like a lot of the artists here are in OC... yall ever get up to the city? I'll try to update my sketchbook over the next couple of days with a few new bits. Let me know if anyone is looking to draw in the LA area, yeah?

TheDirtSyndicate

well anticonnor, i am.
i live right on the coast, just outside of santa monica. got a sweet spot to draw too with a pool, hot tub, pool table, ping pong, bbq grills, lots of couches, an amazing view, etc.
its the "club house" for our little community here. its literally right across the street from my our house. i've been wanting to put together a drawing group here for awhile now. also, right up the hill is a 180 degree view of the ocean thats completely free of any obstructions. no trees or buildings... and this broken road that i walk the dogs to almost every day...
only problem is finding a day that everyone can agree on to meet.
i can talk to the owners and reserve the clubhouse, i just need to set a day that everyone is happy with.
:D
but i dont want to do it unless i have a few people who are actually gonna show up.
if its just 1 or 2 people, i probably dont need to reserve anything. we can all just chill over there and draw, and if there's someone there we could all chill at my place or on top of the hill looking out over the ocean.
but any more than 2 or 3 people and i'll have to make a reservation.

if you're interested let me know.
anyone who's interested let me know.

im not much further than santa ana. for a while a couple of us were getting together fairly regularly but it kind of dwindled down. i generally draw at the gypsy den at "the lab" on weekends. google map it. its a coffee shop full of silly hipsters that are fun to draw. its got plugs if you have a laptop and wifi.

pm me or shoot me an email or call or whatever if you ever make it down this way. if you are going to school in fullerton i also go some weeknights. so i am pretty much always down to draw unless we are crunching at work

my buddy jakob is doing his illustration masters at fullerton and has one of the artist lofts next to the gypsy den in santa ana, you could probably hook up with him somehow too
