Today's topic is: Creature: GIANT Worm/Slug based MONSTER

Commander Obvious
April 18th, 2004, 04:41 AM
just the first thing that came to mind. I was going to do some big production of this huge alien slug trying to attack a city in Utah (Salt Lake City) but being driven away by the name (or something else equally punny) but seeing as it is way past my bedtime, you may all consider yourselves spared. :D

Hi guys! This is my first post here on conceptart.org, so be gentle! :)

This took about 2 hours, and it's some kind of giant slug thing being poked and prodded by some guys...

Any comments and criticisms would be appreciated, I really want to use my time here to improve my skills, so be brutal!

I think you shouldn't spend 2 hours on it. thats the important part. spend around 20-30. think fast, act while thinking.. go for the general idea, general mood you want.. Digital medium is great for this kind of work. Thats just my opinion though.

background is way off. check the slugs trail, check the background then. there is no horizon line. I dont understand where mountains begin. there is no contrast/saturation change on muntains either. and please, dont use effects. put highlights and shadows yourself. try to be realistic about it.

oh and decide. should we be gentle or brutal? :p

hey beeglebug. if i were you i wouldent ask for 'brutal' crits on this board. just some advice.

all i can say is the far rope should be inked behind the tower. and it could use some vehicles or a tent or something (im no good at critting).

and that second one rocks artisanbul.

downloaded this program a few weeks ago and doodled this in it today.. i figured with a name like artrage it would be a shame not to draw like i was heck of pissed.

lines in art rage and colors in oc.

http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v16/bretton/slugbitch.jpg

karma police: that is tight! love the little pincers

artistanbul: i love how shiny and kind of clear he looks. the saliva in his mouth is fantastic!

commander obvious: i like the mouth and squinty eyes! they give him a lot of character.

hi. this is one of my first few digital... things. all photoshop.

well my monster isn't as big as all the others, but if i found this in my recently discharged pile of shit, i'd make a big fuss out of it.

http://img51.photobucket.com/albums/v156/mingzheng/shit_bug_copy2.jpg

think i should spend more time on it? it was really fast...

oh yea and this my first post! it feels like im not a virgin anymore.. i've been lurking around for a long time anyway.

First off, thanks for the comments guys, it's all appreciated. Here's a couple of replies:

I thought the monster was more important than the background, I forced myself to stop after 2 hours, so I didnt have time for that. I'll take it on board for the next environment pic though!

and please, dont use effects. put highlights and shadows yourself. try to be realistic about it.

The only effect I used was Blur, and a hint of Noise. Which bit of shading made you think i'd used an effect? I promise I did all the shading by hand, either with a darker tone, or by using dodge and burn.

oh and decide. should we be gentle or brutal? Ha! I never noticed I'd written that... That'll teach me to to blindly wirte my standard 'starting a new forum' intro line!

Darker/lighter tones are much better than dodge/burn imo. Ow and my comment about your drawing is that the beast could easily break the sticks it has been tied to. The sticks look a bit weak.

I like commander obvious' the best for now.

Thanks again for all the comments guys, that's why I signed up after all!

Anyways, I took some advice on board and did another one, this time I only spent 35 minutes, and I kept it as free and loose as possible, with extra attention on lighting.

This time it's more of a tapeworm thing, I know it's supposed to be giant, but I ran out of time before I could add anything for scale purposes. See what you think, C&C's appreciated again...

djstoker, thats real nice, the only thing i'd say is it could maybe do with a bit more dark in areas like the inside of the mouth, or the base of the tail where it comes out of the rocks, to add depth.

Sorry if i'm spamming a bit on my first day, but here's my third picture. I just had to try that ArtRage after seeing what the others had done in it, so here's my silly little 20 minutes worth out of it... (its a nice program too, don't you think?)

Again great work everyone!!!
This is the largest pic i have done on computer.
Didnt have time to do a background.

Does anyone know any good techniques for colouring in, because using the fill tool looks messy (and gets messy).:D

artistanbul: your newest one puts what i did in artrage to shame.. so i tried again..

http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v16/bretton/wormbitch.jpg

whats cool about artrage is that you have to make art like you dont give a fuck!

youngpaddy: nice. i love the multiple circular rows of teeth and pissy squinty eyes.. i dig the claws and slime sticking to the pavement. very good.

osmus: tight!

@beeglebug - Good lord, you're versatile. Or at least you take suggestions well. Personally I see nothing wrong with dodge or multiply or whatever helps you to get the effect you're looking for. In fact I make a point of experimenting with tool setting & filters to make sure I don't end up in a rut. Digital art already gets a lot of flak for not being a "true" medium... no sense in being purist about what elements of the medium are worthy of utilizing.

Fun topic today. I can't wait to make a submission...

Great work everybody!

Young Paddy, that's excellent!

Beeglebug, I like the last one best. It has a tortured/evil quality. =)
Yeah, ArtRage is really cool. I have trouble controlling the media though. But that's probably because I just don't know what I'm doing... =)

Here's my pic now. PS Elements 1

Here is my slug. I decided to go for more of a dark cave setting. His name is sluggy.

http://www.mattksmith.com/sluggy.jpg

Artistanbul- Your first slug, I dunno why, but I want to give him a hug.

Railboy- It does scare me.

Draigathar- It looks nice and slimey, especially the slime that is oozing out underneath.

I will try to comment on more later. Though good work by everyone so far.

Railboy - You never cease to amaze me. I think both of them are good, especially the first one. It seems to be puking something. Very well done my friend.
Dinger - I am just trying to figure out the scene. It's a little hard to distinguish. Overall it's good, but the monster is hard to determine what plain he is on. I think if you nailed that down you got it.
Commander Obvious - Good way to start out the day. I love the second sketch. Tasty morsel. I wanted to make a giant eating a giant escargo (spelling?), but no time today.
Defunct - Very nice colors. And the background being so out of focus and low detail shows a lot of depth and scale.
PeSTeN - Nice concept, action, and show of scale.
DV8 - Since it seems like we work in the same town, I know all about the good weather today after 5 days of gloom and cold-dampness. I, though, didn't get to do a drawing today. Good sketch you did, I love the cartooniness of it. Cutsie.
