ok. i know this isn't exactly the right thing to do, but here it is anyway. i used terragen to comeup with the background pic, then used photoshop to add some faetures and a lens flare.

andres_pad, I'm not going to give you grief for using terragen for your sketch. It works well and conveys the idea. Lord knows I've used terragen and Bryce for essentially the same thing in the past. However, I would like to make a suggestion or two. Instead of just whipping out a landscape and dropping a lensflare, skeleton and a couple of rocks in, try painting over the landscape. If nothing else, it will make it fit better into the DSG, but it will also give you a chance to study your brush strokes some and discover how they work and which ones work well for you. The few times that I've used terragen or Bryce to do my dirty work, I've always tried to be true to the basic idea of what I'm doing (art). I understand that one can argue that there is no difference between using terragen, Bryce and Photoshop and painter, but I think that there is. I also understand that you may not give a flying rip, either way, which is fine with me. But in taking some time with your work, you will see some improvement. That is what the DSG is about, not who can wip out the coolest pic or who can do it the fastest.
Personally, I think the landscape you did with Terragen is striking. But it looks like a photograph. Which is cool, if that is what you are after. But in the end, it's not a sketch. The few times I've seen you do sketch I didn't think they were too bad. They just needed a little more work. Bottom line, that's all I'm asking. Spend some more time on your stuff, and take yourself seriously. You'll do well if you do. (I'd also suggest setting up a daily sketch book of your own and practice there, if you havent already here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=41)).
Cheers,
~Oregano

The world is in the midst of the worst drought on record and man is forced to drill for water with high tech, mobile water drills.... quick paint job:

No time for myself today, it was WAY too beautiful outside for sketching...
Anywho, Andres_Pad, I agree with Oregano about the work. Using 3D or pseudo-3D apps to do this work is not EXACTLY against the rules, but it is not going to get you anywhere with your painting or drawing skills. If using a photo in your pic is, then it really should be. I am guilty of posting a 3D file on the forum a few months ago and I am not planning on doing it again, because it really isn't what this place is all about. Using 3D apps for reference is great though. I use Poser at times to get the human figure proportions correct, shadows and lighting, etc. Don't cheat yourself, because if you are really serious about art then all physical practice is worth it.
Oregano - I like the simplicity of it all. The cattle skull really stands out.
DV8 - Wow. I think that the concept is nice and the paint daubs really stylize the piece.
Commander Obvious - The elephant is very well done and I love the vulture.

I think that a sketch is a quick work that helps you improve in whatever your particular medium is. If you use Terragen, Lightwave, Photoshop, or your pencil, isn't the goal to represent the topic and improve? Just because someone else isn't trying to improve their drawing skills with a hand-drawn sketch doesn't mean that they aren't sketching or working to improve. I think you need to broaden your definition of a sketch.
Andres_Pad may need to work on adding separate elements, but I hate the implication that 3D is a magical world where everything is easy and 2D sketching is more real. I do both, and I think they are both legitimate art forms.

thanks man, glad you like it. Gotta keep on my painting skills, but most dsgs I am lucky if I just get a quick pen or pencil thumbnail. I consider most of my dsg's as thumbnails...if something has real potential I may take it further someday. (finished piece or design)

Andres_Pad - Yeah, like Oregano said, no one was offended. Just sharing opinions and trying to help everyone improve their skills. Keep at it.
sparky | emily - I am not going to get into an argument over what the definition of a sketch is, because that is one that will never be won. And yes, 3D is a GREAT artform and no it is NOT a magical world. It takes a lot of skill and in-depth knowledge of the application to make it do what you want. I do a lot of 3D at work.
My point was using programs like Bryce to do all the work for you, since it doesn't take much skill in art or 3D knowledge to do anything in there. I have never heard of Terragen, so I figured it was like Bryce, if I was wrong, then I apologize. But I still agree that ones traditional drawing skills help in all forms of art — 2D or 3D. And that is why I was making a point of this forum being for traditional means, whether it is on a computer or not, it's still drawing/painting, to improve upon that.
