Spartan Camp #177 - 50 gestures + Optional "Neck Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 17th of April.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Neck Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

The neck is the main focus. Whether you focus on anatomy study or make it a master study, value/shadow/colour study, or anything else .... can be decided upon freely. Don't underestimate what may seem easy, necks are complex.. learn something new!

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

I've wanted to participate in this for a while again, but my Uni classes are kicking my butt. I've taken to gestures and scribbles on the train to and from class. Most a few seconds each, the kung fu one is referenced from a friends video. Pen.

EDIT: The second image is not showing, and i'm too tired to figure out why, so I when I post more later i'll get it up then.

testing...
Been away but not inactive! There was some confusing stuff with these threads (all valid I'm sure, just didn't have a chance to watch it), and I've been super busy, so here is an offering up from the last few weeks. Please have at me!

I used refs for the noses in this one:

1212700

1212701

I've been working on building an intuition for the subtler parts of the face, like cheeks and chin lines and that dip where the nose meets the forehead.
It's been really helpful.
1212702

1212703

1212715

This was supposed to be the option, but it went overboard:

Welcome Karein! Really like the energy your kung fu! Solid commitment of pen to paper!
samming, good sharp lines with your hands. And the shading also is very nice. Esp in the fist and the hand holding the cup. The lower left hand looks like the wrist is a bit fat and the perspective off on the pinky. But I don't draw in pen because I have the permanence, so overall I think it all really demonstrates good focus.

zy. Cool stuff. I like how your pencil sketches has that line weight in them.

Here are mine, neck study from Vilppu. Cylindrical neck.

Went with Bridgman studies on necks. Then some necks on my own, which was a little disorganised. Will do some proper gestures next week...

@Karein I love that sequence.

@samming Great hand studies.

@zy. I like that second to last face with the mouth open. That one's my favorite. The others might do better if they were sharper paintings. They're a bit fuzzy.

@ggnastist I love your watercolours + inks. I should try some like that.

@Anthis Wow, lots of nicely rendered neck studies! I thought I'd push myself a bit further this week and try to capture the form of the anatomy rather than just doing sloppy sketches. Then I came here and you've upstaged me, haha. That's good, it motivates me to do more and work harder. Inspiring work.

Karein -Think you did a nice job at the movement in those clothes. Like the stretching trousers in the 3rd pose and the shirt in the 2nd pose. With a sequence like this its always interesting so see how some shots work better than others. Shame we can't see the 2nd image!

samming - Very nice! hands can be tough. Remember that the fingers' digits movement is relatively fixed. So drawing them can be an exercise in perspective sometimes. Nice gestures too, some of them seem to be from life. Very lively and organic drawing.

zy. - Good to see you're still around then! If there's anything confusing you, dont hesitate to ask. The spartan camp has been away for a week though. I like your sketches a lot. I'm noticing those lines in the faces of your second scan, something I've seen more often. Probaly to indicate shadows/value shifts? Portraits are getting better. I'd only advice that can be good to have some stronger defined forms (around certain edges and bony areas) could be suitable.

ggnastist - I think the neck studies are wonderful. What sets them apart are the simple guidelines like 'wider at the top', and never symmetrical. Those are things you'll remember. Invaluable. Almost a shame the follow-up gestures are quick ones, always interesting to see progress in an area you've just studied!

Manlybrian - Perhaps, haha. I think I went a little overboard. I had originally planned to do a lot of accurate but simplified necks. Caught up in rendering instead. You got some nice necks going on. I found it tough to show those muscles in female necks, without making them too muscular/stringy and manlike. You solved that well, just by indicating where those mucles are. Like in the girl next to the giraffe.

I had completely spaced about posting the rest of my pages ^^ Sorry :P

Thanks Zy, your drawing have a nice flow to them, I like the line variation alot.

Lovely rendering in your work Anthis ;) Here's the other pages, if they load correctly :P

Thank you Manlybrian, I love your comic :P Made me giggle.

Anyhow, a majority of these are referenced from life on my daily commute to uni. First page is all travel, second is the sequences, but the bottom lot aren't as good as the top. They were done on different days, and sometimes my mood affects my drawing. The third lot are Bridgman, and watching soccer out on the field outside my bedroom window.
