Teen Challenge 116: Spirit Animal

Topic
This week's topic is Spirit Animal. You have to create a human(oid) accompanied with his/her spirit animal.
Bonus points if you use yourself (i.e. self portrait with spirit animal).
A spirit animal can either be a spirit taking the shape of an animal or an animal spirit returning to help you.
Examples are stories where ancestors come back in the shape of animals to help you when in need etc.
Nature lending a hand to a righteous character or evil/twisted/forsaken spirits in the shape of animals to assist evil characters.
The story behind the picture can also be serious or silly (spiderbro (http://i.imgur.com/bvxnW.jpg)). Create your own!
The spirit can be rendered realistically or ghostly (Patronus Charm (http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090531134526/harrypotter/images/5/5f/Luna%27s_Patronus.gif)), you decide.
It's all up to you!

Focus
This weeks focus is story and symbolism.
How much does your picture tell of the characters past, personality, hopes and struggles?
Does the spirit animal reflect the characters self or does it balance his or her faults?
Use colour, use composition, use different kind of symbols to get your story through to the viewer.

Deadline
The deadline is Sunday April 17th, 23:59 GMT

One week. One challenge. WHO WILL COME OUT THE VICTOR?!

Well, that relationship is more an animal companion.

With spirit animal I mean a spirit coming in the shape of an animal or the spirit of an animal that comes to help you/lead the way, etc. You've all heard the stories.

Edited the main post for clarity.

Droid, the dæmons from Northern Lights are a form of spirit animal.

The white wolf in Balto is as well.

The forest spirit in Princess mononoke.

Ghost wolves in World of Warcraft.

There's plenty of inspiration out there!

done some sketching but nothing to show yet. heres the basic idea though:

theres a tribe in some random obscure place in which certain members have spiritual powers and are able to summon nature/animal spirits. we'll call them shamans! ;/ at first, the spirit manifests as a coiling mass of glowy-sparkly energy stuff, and as the shaman becomes more skilled at wielding his/her spirit, it begins to take on a more substantial form such as that of an animal. whatever form the spirit takes on is a reflection of the person themselves, and can vary from anything from an insect to an elephant to a tree. it is also possible to gain control over multiple spirits, but this is quite rare as it requires a large amount of skill.

something like that....as far as the actual tribe is concerned, im going for a mix of aztec/vikingish. anyways, itll be a lot easier to know what i mean when i actually have something to show :)

good luck guys!

Looking for critique, I'm not extremely pleased with the anatomy of the wolf yet. Rough wip:

The Pariano: looks good so far, just watch out for that tangent of the front guys arm and the other character. lookin forward to how it turns out

Platingard: definitely seeing some improvement. careful when you add color, youre losing a lot of the values you had in the b/w sketch so its looking kinda flat now. keep it up :)

heres mine so far. gotta actually try to finish something for once! we'll see how that goes ;P

lancer_idenoure: I was originally going to do a stag, but I'm glad I didn't because you've pulled it off much better than I would have. I hope you finish! :)

Platinguard: If you want to preserve the values when you're adding color, you should place an overlay layer over your grayscale (so your hard work isn't for nothing!) Keep going! :)

Pretty much done with this. :D

so uh i kinda had selective reading issues with the brief.

that's a self portrait there but if it were to actually tell any stories it'd probably be a stuffed turtle.

EDIT: delicious tasty edible colours i guess

Platinguard: I think it would be better to place the girl on the other side.
tempest-haze: The lion seems to be leaning a little bit to the left.
Pokepetter: Nice sketches!

I never seem to get involved in TC so I'm going to make the effort :D
...Shame I only noticed this today :nohope:

Couple of WIPs here, as you can see I decided to expand the canvas to fit some flippers in (I thought it was too stiff without) Hope I manage to finish in time!
