Teen Challenge 115: Unusual Still Life


Topic
This week's topic is Unusual Still Life. This week there will also be some ground rules set down:
1) It MUST be done from life--don't copy a photo, don't paint from your imagination. Set up a still life on your desk and paint/draw it.
2) No use of photos in your work. In the past we have allowed some people to mix photos and painting in their entries. This week I want you to do it all manually and not take shortcuts. Textured brushes are fine, but try to avoid phototextures and collage/matte painting type entries.

When people do still lifes they do the same thing that was done for hundreds of year--fruits/vegetables, bowls, bottles, glasses, etc. This week your challenge is to choose an object or objects that are NOT traditionally used in still life. Try to find something that you have never seen painted before, or some weird object you have lying around the house. Perhaps something that is "you", and will not blend in with one of thousands of other still lifes.

Focus--NOW MANDATORY
Focus is a new addition to the Teen Challenges to... well, challenge you a bit more!

This week's focus is Realism. I know this is vague, but try to make this as finished as possible, and get it looking very realistic. You have all the information in front of you, so just observe as carefully as you can and try to make an accurate painting. This will require careful attention to values, colour, edges and much more.

Inspiration--El Coro
In these oil paintings, El Coro broke free from the traditional subject matter of a still life, and painted things that were relevant to his life. By doing this he took a still life past the point of a simple study, and made them into a finished painting on their own. Note: I am not advocating the use of drugs, and since these are public boards in which future employers may look, I would be cautious in painting things that may be illegal.

I have also decided to keep a clock of how many hours I have spent so that you can all see I am taking my time :P 3 hours and 12 minutes so far.

Looks good Platinguard! Watch the perspective on the triop tank, the ellipses of the top and bottom can be a bit cleaner/more accurate. Anyhow, time to start painting it :).

It just occurred to me Platinguard...you can download the free trial version of Photoshop, and get it for 30 days. Then, during that time maybe buy Photoshop Elements. But at least this way you will not need to work in a program you dislike.

What's the problemen then?? I don't have a tablet cause i'm low on money but i did my entry on tc destroyer of worlds digitally with a mouse and my mousepad. But in the near future i'm going to buy one though:p still i thinking it's pretty cool that you decided to do it traditionally ;)
