ROUND #208, the Titan Warbeast
topic:
ROUND#208, the Titan Warbeast
This week's creature is going to be HUGE in all aspects. As many of you may know, in Greek mythology before the Gods became the rulers of the Earth, they had to defeat the Titans. This race was often interpreted as super race with god-like powers and a colossal size.
Your job is to design a warbeast/creature that Titans used in a war against the Gods. If you can pick an existing Titan and create his own personal warbeast - even better! Things to keep in mind: please make the creature original; minimal to no accesories; whether you want to include the bg or not is your choice but there has to be an indication of how enormous this warbeast is; really think about the weight of this giant and try to incorporate it in your concept/painting.
Can't wait to see your amazing work guys! Good luck and have fun!

Kambei Shimada Welcome to COW!~ Great to see more new participants. Work fast, think about what suits the brief and be prepared to change things that look off. Have fun. :D
Lege1 Great start so far, I'll agree with the humanoid point that emerging made. The composition doesn't really say threatening beast to me so far, it says I'm standing here look at me. Love the mask idea.
DefiledVisions Ohh hunchback, looks freaky, I'm thinking im seeing a weird muscular likelike face. Cool creepy i like. Also veins i totally see veins.
,empyrean Nice tones so far, but you're creature doesn't look like its very threatening or war like. It looks like a goblin head with tentacles at the moment. I do understand that it was a quick doodle though. :D
Den Grimme Raeber Ohhh nice concept. I like that you're putting them together to make an uber beast. It's going to be hard to get a good balance, think about what things make each character unique and the symbolic elements of them to try and get an uncomplicated design.
DoctorDigits Great sketch and starting ground. The city gives a good comparison of size and contrast. It's going to be hard balancing out the creature to landscape elements, so i suggest giving the picture some head room for breathing.
(lark Great quick sketch, Very intimidating and the reflection is going to look neat. Great painterly style so far. I know that the creature is going to change a lot from this sketch can't wait to see where you go with it. Little static but im sure youll fix that.
Snafu Interesting sketch so far, I'm liking the colours and the subject matter, underwater yes? The body looks a little humanoid for COW, but it's hard to tell. Looking forward to more progress. Also how does an underwater creature hunt, would it have legs? and if so maybe a half water half surface picture could be more dynamic.
vrt Great composition very angular and the perspective is very intimidating, im relating to the foreground character well. The shoulders show a good weight with the creatures walking. No crit so far just paint more. :D
--
I'm read the wiki page and I think I'll be doing a warbeast with the modern interpretation of the titans in mind. I've chosen to do the titans Asteria - Titan of nocturnal oracles and falling stars. The Titan goddess of prophetic dreams, astrology and necromancy. I'm interpreting the falling starts as meteors/sun. Asteria was known to have changed into a quail to escape the advances of Zeus. She was an alkyonide and after Heracles killed her parents the daughter flung themselves into the sea and transformed to kingfishers. She married the river god Hydaspes, so water is going to play a part in this too. Should all come together nicely if i can think of a good layout and composition.
[EDIT: Here's a complete list of titans] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Greek_mythological_figures#Titans)

logistic puppet - Using photo textures to help establish your image is fine by me, but your end product must be mostly your own drawing and/or digital painting. As collage goes, using it the way, say, MatejaPetkovic has been doing in his recent character work is fine with me, but like I said, the end product needs to be your own painting.

logistic puppet: that's a good question. As far as I'm concerned you shouldn't use photos in your work unless you use a texture overlay but only sparingly so that it only adds a little bit to a drawn image.

Ohh snap yeah that link is broken! its been like this for a while now i guess.. i am not sure where the proper link is, best thing is to ask (ark and Si_swe
As for the creature - i suppose chimera is not against the rules but it will be up to you how original your design will still come out. You know what i mean? You may just plant a head of a lion on a hippo body and that won't be appreciated much at all. Now if you plant the same lion head on hippos body, come up with your own colors for the creature make the transition from the head to body seamless, put something interesting in like 4 eyes or whatever (which is a cliche by now i know but i had to give a quick example).. i think in the end it will only benefit you and your votes if you do spend some time modifiying your chimera to something more than just several animals fused together

Sure am far behind most of you people.
This is the not so small thumbnail sketch chosen from friday. Still all kinds of wrong with this and i will definitely also have to look into that pose suggestion, which is a good (and should have also been an obvious) idea.
Basically the idea I am working form is the combination of all (most) of the titans into one. They are going to be schemed into three levels (sort of loosely following one gnostic build with the base of the Demiurge, the Arch Deacon(?) in between and on top the realm of light).
so the build is something alike:
III - Ether / Celestial
II - Mind / Will
I - Earth / Water (Matter)
The lower plane is headed by Atlas and Oceanus, midplane by Pallas (with Cronus and Lapetus as main melee weapons) and top plane by Hyperion. The rest of the Titans have been assigned to council functions and will be implemented as smaller elements. I have been and am currently looking at creatures with appearances and functions that I can use. I - being mainly robust water and amphibian creatures, II- searching for tendons, muscles and plating and III - light, graceful, flying elements.
Maybe this is a bit of a complicated setup but i love this stuff and it is real just a basis for inspiration to have something cool to playground with.
Will have to see if I can put my pen where my mind (mouth) is :P
Tally-ho!
P.S.
Found this crazy beast in research, the double muscled BELGIAN BLUE, might serve as good inspiration for this challenge or in general. look 'em up!

Metal: I like where the concept is headed Metal. The one thing I'd say is that the brief wants the thing to be huge, I'd scale down the figure next to it so that it is a gargantuan creature. Personally I feel it should be big enough to knock over buildings and cause massive devastation since Titans themselves were supposed to be enormous.

Monsters in the Greek mythology aren't that big really... Do they have to be that enormous? The titans are only a head taller than man. I don't know where the idea comes from that they were gigantic in proportion. There is nothing in the Greek texts that suggest this.

A few comments for now:
BAMeyer - I like the dynamism. Maybe use some atmospheric perspective to push the scale a little more. Right now it looks like a tiny boat with a normal sized creature.
metal militant - Good start, try and push the scale even further. Reminds me of Final Fantasy Behemoths right now. Take a look at the rear legs, which seem to lack musculature at the moment. Use some animal reference.
Den Grimme Raeber - That is an intense design, if you can pull that off in a full render, it's going to be epic as hell.
GoodSoup - Excellent sense of scale. Looking forward to seeing this develop.
scorge - Man, super fucking epic. If I have one crit it's that the eye's position looks a little strange to me. Other than that, this is SO cool. Glad to have you back this round. I hope you'll be around more often.
lkjhgfdsa - Awesome sense of scale. Maybe get some of those tentacles flailing for a more dynamic sense.
Flame Unquenchable - Your edges are very unclear. Try and get some crisper edges and more of an idea of planes. Right now the value distribution is so even that the forms flatten themselves. Try using a bigger brush, so the amount of strokes doesn't clutter your image.
Here's some more on mine. Trying to get basic values down and establish some lighting.

Thanks to Lark and Si_Swe for answering my question about the rules. I know this is prob way OTT on the collage and breaks the rules but I thought i'd share it anyways. Still prity new to digital art so i'm just playin about with different styles and techniques and stuff at the mo.

I was commenting on what the instructions were as per the activity, I didn't want Metal's to be rejected because it didn't adhere to the brief. Maybe it's big enough, but when I see Huge in all caps and the word colossal, that sets a very specific notion of how large the thing should be.

hey Jumei - well, by modern interpretation of titans they vary in size, yes.. Some of them are super large and some just a head taller than humans. I was speaking more from a video game developing side. I have seen in numerous games the titans are portrayed as very big humanoids and i prefer that idea more than a classical example. I guess the brief is to create their super huge creature and i guess the challenge here is to make something look like it has a lot of weight and it is colossal. Basically a titan warbeast that would be a mortal creature but powerful enough to fight off the gods and their warbeasts (like one eyed giants and hydras). SOrry for any confusion
metal_militant
March 28th, 2011, 03:31 AM
Thank you all for your comments. I will scale the creature up definitely but just to clear any doubts, the humanoid next to it is Chronos. As far as I can remember, he is just colossal in God of War III so....

Not based on any titan in particular, going to be a rock sort of...thing, powered by this red crystal sticking out of the bottom. Don't really like the perspective or anything but it's really just for general painting practice at the moment, hence what I imagine is a cardinal sin; blocking in and doing detail bit by bit instead of laying down an overall colour. Ah well!
PS : Having a slight problem, every time I change the Opacity Jitter it resets as soon as I press the pen down, rather frustrating.

@ NoobConcept : Looks like he's a little off kilter there. Try bringing his head around to the right a bit more he looks like he's going to fall over to the left.
The creature's back right thigh might need to be shortened a hair.
Take a look at the claw in the front, from the way it looks like you want to show it, the claws are bent down and they should come toward the viewer more. Try moving the claws into the toes some and stretch the light on the underpaw all the way across, it will help define different portions of the paw. You might take a look at a bear paw or something similar and try to see how it articulates, that seems like it would be close enough to give you some idea of how the paw should function when stepping.

so i changed mine up today. spent a little time on it, hopefully finish in time. so close to deadline already!
these are Hyperions war beasts that he uses at night while he is away. he is the representation of the sun fyi, but I'm sure everyone knows that from their research. also used as protectors of his daughter Selene (the moon).

Am currently working on the pencil sketch for the final render.
Here is one of the A3 of sketches from the last two days. Many of the elements are in place here, I would however like to have played around some more with the composition, the integration of the different parts and lighting and values but I think I will get a better exercise trying to finish this up within the time limit.
Probably won´t see a completely finished render by tomorrow so I will likely go for the finished pencil sketch, which I will then finish up at a later date.

Flame_Unquenchable Interesting take dude, looks cool so far. Rendering its surroundings will help the perspective alot.
Also be sure to look at horizon shots to see how the value changes over long distances. Try and incorporate this into your creature for greater sense of scale.
http://hengki24.deviantart.com/ - This guy has some interesting foggy landscapes which show what I mean.
aeronik I agree with Lark, hes spot on with what he said. And also similar to what ive said to Flame. Perhaps throwing in some dramatic fog will help show scale. Also I just noticed the top of the mountain is a temple or something. More focal attention to that would be cool.

Just a couple things:
(lark - The image is super cool and dynamic, but the creatures are all head, otherwise lacking form somewhat. Is there a way you can get some more body to them?
logistic_puppet - It's still really relying too much on collage and not enough on your own painting. Additionally, we're only getting the front half of your creature, we'll need to see the back elements to the creature as well.
Aeronik - Really dynamic, really nice sense of scale and great rendering. My big concern is that because we're seeing the back of the creature, we aren't getting so much of the design elements that are hinted at.
I've started rendering out the head. Colours on the creature itself are really up in the air (in a literal and figurative sense).

Started rendering and pushing the values. I've taken Flame_Unquenchable's advice and tilted the head a little, tweaked the "paws" (not sure what to call them :P) and shortened the back thigh a little. Also got rid of the horrible orange background. :)
Stay need to work on this one for a while... I hope I'll be able to finish it by tomorrow.

This is what I have done in this weeks time. There is still some things (especially that left arm and eye) but think I will take it to the Photoshops now and work it out there. Then hopefully next week I will work faster.
I actually sort of oppose the suggestion of the extension of this challenge. I think a tight weekly schedule will be better for measuring progress in the long run. Seeing as there are no prizes involved, one can always finish up the work and post it on a later date, makes not much of a difference.
Having said that I think it would also be cool to see a biweekly or monthly challenge in CA to be able to really dig into concepting(?) and have time to test out different things.
Maybe actually a monthly challenge that could run along side participation in weekly challenges.
…And while I am at it I think it would also be really great to see a weekly sculpting challenge. Now, I am no where near fast enough to participate in such a challenge (at the moment) but I have seen what some people are capable of achieving within just one day of work. Depending on how strong the sculpting community is present on the forum that would serve as awesome inspiration. (Maybe the last two suggestions should be raised elsewhere?)
Anyway over and out, looking forward to the poll party, I will be at the bar with a heavy long drink watching you kids play!
Tally-Ho!
also @ Jaunay, had hoped you would have gone with the second from the bottom left design of your sketch ark, the one with the round head and the smoke horns. That is a really nice design and I think you should definitely finish it up at some point.

pretty cool creature - i think the perspective on the right building is completely off though
More focal attention to that would be cool.

i think a week is enough to produce a good quality image if you get to it right away. I had an idea of CA making another challenge which would be called "Illustration of the Week" and impose more concept rules on creature as it is being done on character atm. The Illustration could be a 2 week or a month challenge since usually it needs a lot more rendering of little details and backgrounds. A little more vague topic would be given like "crowning of prince Gruntas" or whatever and then people can take it in any setting they wish and illustrate the whole thing. I think that would be pretty cool but we'll see if thats possible

I got some good news for those who wanted an extension!
We will be hosting this round until the 5th of April - so everybody has a lot of time to finish up whatever they started and even work a little further on already finished work (you can always update your final by editing the attachement in Finals thread until it is closed).

Wow, this is gonna be a tough one... lots of great pieces out there... :S
Anyway, since we've got some more time to finish the work ( yay! :) ) I've decide not to start with color yet and keep refining details here and there. Still not sure about how to go on with the hind leg and how much detail to put into that... my bet is to keep it basic and focus on detailing the head and upper mid-section. Does that make any sense?
Cheers!

Hey thanks emerging for extending the deadline I totally agree with making an illustration of the fortnight. Although some people may think that it overlaps too much with the current challenges. I was on CG hub yesterday and they have some fairly successful 2 week events, great quality work for 2 week, it gives you more reflection time. How do we go about this? Or maybe we should alternate between 1 week and 2 week challenges or something?
Are we still going to start the next project on time and run them consecutively?
Den Grimme Raeber Thanks for the feedback, by that point I was stressing about getting it done on time, so they're rushed and i should have labeled them so people could point things out easier. Thanks though I shall get the the little guy at some point. :D
Also you design is really well thought out, I can see you've taken the time to create a beast that works around your titan, and it shows. Can't wait to see where you go with it!
Also also also, Grimme you should totally get up a sketchbook on ca, id love to check out more of your work. :D

NoobConcept: You've picked a real tough angle on that one. To me your perspective is off, I think the arms could do with being a bit longer compared with the body. I reckon if you do some perspective line and get some some, maybe someone doing push ups since your body type is quite human
Si_Swe: Nice design! I kinda want to see multiple rows of teeth, and some sort of tongue, or tongues.
A bit more progress on mine. I want him to leave destruction in it's wake, eating trees and shedding boulders. I may well have trees and maybe even the titans castle on it's back

I think this is where I'll leave it for today.
Scanned my pencil sketch and tried working on it in Photoshop but as I applied a little bit of environment it started looking like a squeaky toy left on the beach. So now I have made a few new thumbnails and changed the perspective a little.
I figure I am gonna have the sun come down through the crown of Hyperion (the screaming birds on top of the other bird).
-------------------------------------------
In regards to the idea of the "Illustration of the Week" Emerging I think that would be awesome inspiration. Having a simple briefing and then letting participants go haywire across the board. Seeing the same brief interpreted in many different settings and with different focuses.
Hope you will be able to push that through.
Taking it up the other way around might also be fun. Having a very fixed topic, for instance an event like the coronation, maybe the entire ceremony. Having participants designing a piece of this ceremony, a creature, a character, an environment, a prop etc. It might not be the actual coronation but could be something going on underneath the stage, behind the curtains, in the kitchen, the hallway, before, under or after the event. It might be and entire environment or just a single subject with some function in regards to the event.
The brief could be something like the prince succeeding his father, the highly acclaimed king in celebration of the victory of a long battle. The court turned up side down in preparations, much turmoil and excitement.
Something that would create a very specific setting but still not limit what you would be allowed to do.
At the end of the period there then would be many stories woven around this single event, with sub plots etc. There might be a lot of princes being coronated and many different ceremonial halls. Still it could be cool working on for instance a creature and then be inspired by someone doing an environment that might supplement what you are working on, to view your own work in a new perspective or maybe take it in a new direction.
I can see the forum has a challenge & collaboration area but I figure this is more a kin to the existing challenges, you'd still do your own work individually.
Mah… anyway seeing as the 208 is still running I will let of of it here, taking my hands of the keyboard now and going home.

How is it that people don't understand not to post non-entry posts in the finals thread until the poll is up!? It's not hard. It says right there, in the thread, not to do it.
To answer the questions posed in that thread, the deadline is being extended because we have a special round coming up, but in order to do that, we have to get the timeframe correct. We will not be posting a new topic early. You are capable of waiting, do so.

did i post in the wrong section? sorry :-( probably more tabs were open and i missed the right one, my mistake.
i just suggested to edit the main post with the extended deadline, as now it is lost in the thread a bit, thats all, nothing hostile.
-------
edit:
I've been actually happy to see this contest extended, so i could sketch my idea:
Hyperion's (Sun titan) "Dragon"
this is supposed to be a solar dragon. instead of flapping her wings, it collects humidity form clouds, creating some kind of material from wich she can stretch a strong film. this functions as a sunray collector (lens), focusing beams to one point, putting the environment on fire. The heat keeps the dragon up in the air - practically the "lens" functions also as a "balloon". Accidentally, it can also harm inattendive populations.
Needless to say, i'm facing numerous problems describing this visually :-)

@NoobConcept: I think something that might help the perspective is to shorten the bottom teeth some. If you are looking almost directly up at his upper palate inside his mouth, then you wouldn't see the full length of his teeth because they're foreshortened.
Also that back thigh is still a bit too long, it needs to come up higher because his back half is further away.
It's looking good though! Keep at it.

Emerging, I get that problem from time to time with my Wacom. Usually it's a matter of the graphics program not reading it for some reason. For me, closing and re-opening the program usually does the trick. Sometimes I need to just reboot the computer.

Control Panel ---> Hardware ----> Wacom Tablet: There should be a 'remove preferences' button there. I have Windows 7 so I'm just assuming that XP would have a similar control panel. I've used XP before but never with a Wacom tablet.
