Topic: An Insect's Perspective
suggested by Lane.
BRIEF:
You are an insect… where are you and what do you see?
- Keep in mind that common subjects can be very interesting when viewed from an insect’s perspective.
- Open suggestion/idea: if you want you can use a creature from the COW (Creature of the Week) activity that's an insect. Just make sure you get permission from the artist first! COW/EOW Crossover Activity Coming Soon, by the way. :yayca:
- Please specify which image is final when you post your final in this thread!
Deadline: Tuesday, April 5th

According to this you just need to do pixel art:

Andrew I think he means an insect with normal eyesight, normal being human.

do we have to do actual insect views? like can we do something where everything is just at a much bigger scale than normal; as if humans were like insects to much bigger creatures? i think that could have some interesting results :)

On that topic does it need to be of this world? Could these be intelligent "alien" insects? I agree with Lancer that this gives a wider scope for creative ideas :)

Lancer, I think that misses part of the point. As much as I think that's a really cool idea, I think part of the point of this one is to look at the mundane with new (much smaller) eyes.

sweet topic! any teenagers of the 90s or 00s remember the awesome 'insect'eye' view at the start of each episode of rugrats?

I've never done one of these but I may give it a shot! Neat idea.

Very good point. This insect will have slightly 'humanoid' vision. If there is something off kilter about the perspective, the focus of the environment, that's also allowed.
@ skoenig, yes it can, as long as it's an insect you're good to go.

Hmmm...the only two thumbnails I did today that I liked. I think I might go with the ant idea with the giant sugar lump in the grass but I might make more thumbs tomorrow.
:/ I don't think either really captures the idea of an environment.

So random question, does this have to be from an ant's view in the sense that an actual ant is in the picture, or could it be like... human being in a world that makes him an ant's size? i.e: gulliver's travels/jack in the beanstalk.

I would say never mind, the key-part of this EOW is that you draw from a very different point of view, a macro view, where even the most ordinary things may be something huge and important ^^ but thats just my opinion

The idea is that your supposed to be an insect, so I would have to say no to the small human in a giant world idea; although, creativity is more than welcome, so if you want to go with a unique approach, have at it.

This is what I have been working on. Experimenting with transmitted light.

Howdy Folks, this Brief has really inspired some old concepts that I never got arround to doing. When I finished my Crab Still life I wonderd about doing smaller creatures.
So this is my Idea.
Insect Fight!!
Going to be one of the following :-)...
Dung vs Dung Beetle
Scorpian vs ???
Wasp Vs Fly
Wasp Vs Spider
really aching to do a cool Concept on this theme!! rock on!!

What a cool topic, Lane you are right there is so much room for creativity here. I started doing one and then ended up doing 3 more, I really wanted to try to push for an environment you wouldn't normally think of when you think of bugs, though they live just about everywhere.
Trying to decide which one to finish, all crits are welcome :)

Skoenig: Those are awesome, good inspiration there and off-the-beaten-path type ideas. A cool one would also be like the Queen room in an ant hill, or a kitchen-scape for a cockroach. There's so many cool places this thread can go. Sadly spending all my free time on the COW this time...though I might do this one even after the deadline just for practice.
Lane.

monotony, I like how "populated" your entry looks. It's very lively and has this sweet community feeling.
Mine is finished but mundane. Well, I tried; I almost never paint environments.

Well I know the deadlines tomorrow >_< but I figured I'd take a stab at it anyway and see how far I get. Here's a thumbnail.
I decided to explore the idea that an ordinary object would be massive to an insect. So my computer and the mess of cables and surge protectors become a landscape in a way. Still need to figure out how to tackle the details and whatever the lower left corner is...

Are we supposed to post our final images here?
Here is mine. A little ant finding a hunk of sugar (probably from a doughnut) in the yard, early in the morning. Now he must go back and tell his ant friends.
I just wanted to paint something cute and bright and have the sugar be a large part on the environment...like a giant rock/boulder.

Hello!
this isnt strictly an entry as I went kind of off topic, but i wanted to get the feel of being dwarfed like an insect, in the way a bug would view a kitchen or bridge, which this brief inspired..
any excuse to draw wierd buildings right!? see what you think anyway..
i think Lanes image is amazing, exactly what a bug might see on its travels, artful, believable warm light filtering through the cap of the mushroom, and i really like shana koenig's man-o-war. its a strange but interesting image. I like JJack's giant sugar mountain, ah and JeiWo's POV is awesome; very cool!
