Spartan Camp #175 - 50 gestures + Optional "Desk Still Life Study"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 27th of March.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an "Desk Still Life Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
A small break from the anatomy studies; something different this week! Any compilation of whatever objects you have lying around on your desk. Whether it be a stack of pencils, a pile of books, lots of junkfood, or just the mess that's there. Could be challenging to draw the things you normally wouldn't!
Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

It wasn't my week. I'm sorry... Just to prove I did some tentative attempts to draw gestures...

I try to do more, better ones, and the optional too. It's not really a big change for me, I copied a lot of objects in the past months :D I usually used photos though, lighting is problematic in my room, I prefer natural light but my room doesn't have much of it :( I have a new mug I wanted to paint - you don't want to see the mess in my desk, believe me (I keep my kneadable eraser on it now, too, not only plates and half of the glasses and mugs of the household - it's a lot of fun kneading it. I even erase with it sometimes unlike in my past).

Missed you guys :) I can't believe how useful these exercises have already become, and it's fun to think back to how painstakingly I drew my first sets of 50 gestures compared to how quickly and with more attention to the whole that I do them now. My little bit of practice came in handy during my first life drawing class last week-- it would have been so hard knowing where to start or trying to get a gesture done in 4 minutes had I taken the class without practicing gestures on my own first! It's nice to be experiencing the results of Spartan Camp already.
This week's gestures are junk from the desk (fast drawings, practicing different grip so I don't draw with my fingers all the time) but I didn't do a formal study. The others are skulls reffed from google images, some jumping horses from imagination (I made another mistake with the way one of the legs turns, just like my handstanding capybara of a few weeks ago-- duh!). Final page is from Preston Blair's Animation. I ordered the book and plan on going through a course posted online. Although it is not my goal to be an animator, I admire and would like to replicate the forms and action of classical cartoons in order to apply them to my own work in the future. I have a children's book to illustrate some time in the future, so I'm working up to that.

J@n!t: Nice drawings, just the objects looks rushed and flat... It looks like you aren't used to drawing such things... Or it was the different grip or something else?
I never noticed my gesture studies were useful but they must be... right? It's just I never draw figures, just sometimes copy them and it has not much use, my own figures don't get better. Skeletal and muscle studies helped me the most I think. I need a different approach...
Considering I was in a "I can't draw anything anyway" mood, it's not that crappy (I never can draw cylinders anyway, simple shapes are extremely hard to me, I usually don't even try):

But I'm seriously out of shape right now.
Midnight here in Hungary. Time is up if I wish to be oh so correct regarding the deadline. But I needn't to stop drawing at all :D Next week there will be cute weasels (I met one personally this week! First time in my life, yay me!), sexy girls and whatnot :) I'm looking forward to the optional as always! :D
Edit: Here's another... Just a quick sketch without too much thinking about colors, correct proportions or whatnot. It's kinda relaxing :)

ShiNIN: Hah- I guess the objects do look flat. I was just trying to describe them rapidly-- one of the things fast gesture drawings has helped me with is the ability to observe things quickly, rather than needing to study them or not noticing different parts. While most of those things I drew were flattish or drawn from above, I certainly should have paid more attention to the 3-dimension aspects. Flatness is a fault of mine still, probably mostly a beginner's problem, which I am working on. Thanks for the comment, it was helpful.
I like your last quick drawing. That's kind of how I see this Spartan Camp activity; working on getting it right fast without tons of consideration and careful measure.

Desk study...
http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/3194/ocksketch.jpg
I have too many action figures within arms reach of my desk, i was gonna do a photoshop study of this guy but this wasn't a good week for me sick all weekend.

had the girlfriend sit for a some 3 minute poses, i think this area of over any is where i should work more, getting better with capturing body language.

and the figure that keeps repeating is from Dave Finch's figure drawing video. I really like how he builds his figures and i'm trying to burn that procedure and look into my muscle memory.

And the animal for this week was jaguar. And sorry these are bigger than they really need to be i'll keep that in mind when uploading them for next week.

my friend has suggested a draw a centaur day, so here is me suggesting it as the theme for the spartan camp after the next.

Centaurs are great but confusing creatures to me due to the "scale problem" between their human and animal parts... My fine little anatomy flaw detection skills got confused :(
But I'm totally support the idea of more special and interesting optional topics - and I usually enjoyed those in the past... But still :D
Just some shoes, feet, silly things for now. I have more messy pencil stuff, maybe I will shot and arrange them later.

Just passing by on a public computer - I should have access to my own shortly.
You can expect comments and a new thread later today/tomorrow. This activity will be back on track, and better than before!

Not a very productive week. Some gestures.

shiNIN - Hah I recognize the problem. I've recently moved, and now I have a room with lots of natural light! The difference can be big. Good gestures.. I notice those legs are improving... They're starting to feel more and more natural.
J@n!t - I can't get your image to show for some reason, I'll try a different PC later if I can access one ;S. Don't quite understand since I did see it earlier.
ReggieR3MOTE - Hah! the desk study is actually a figure! Nice. Good going on the muscles. I like the ones where your girlfriend posed. You can notice these are from life, they look natural and relaxed. Not like a constructed figure. You're using a big pen, make sure you have enough room. That or you may need to simplify the smaller details. This is a great exercise, you're lucky to have a gf willing to pose!
krisCrash - Shame to hear about the rejection. Did they give any useful advice or thoughts? Checked your sb and you seem very versatile (although lacking updates perhaps). Not sure what you think is wrong about the figures. If anything, its the focus on pelvises/chests (which are pretty good actually) The rest is more rushed. Perhaps you start with a chest as a base? That's actually a fun exercise; start with a completely different place, like the feet or an arm.
ggnastist - Those are versatile poses and timed, but I don't recognize them. Any specific reference? Nice job on using pens, you'll force good lines. In some cases you may want to try using one, focused line instead of 'feeling' for a while and ending up with a whole bunch of lines for one movement. Nice animals mixed in!

sorry for my double post. I'm not sure how that happened.
Anthis My reference is from this site http://lovecastle.org/draw/ . 60 sec is too little time.
