In my parallel universe mother nature has evolved various animals in a bid to try and combat the destruction humans have caused to her carefully balanced eco systems. Here you can see the humble puffer fish has evolved into a floating smog purifier: The puffer fish drift over the cities in airborne shouls - sucking in the air and purifying it. :D

Morr - Nicely done.

JABAJAWOOLU - Err... Happy Birthday! :)

jerO - Is that a crossbow the tiger has?

retrop - Ouch... that's gotta hurt! LOL! :D

Gumdrop - great pic. I love it. You handle your colors so well. I'm going to have to PM you and pic your brain on what you do, cause it's sweet. Every time.

Well, I'm slammed with another project and no time to do the DSG again, but here's another that I've done previously for other reasons- so keep in mind, this isn't a sketch, so I'm sort of sharing instead. Whatever :D

Mr. Holden's Hydra, or "What if Jellyfish flew?".

"Hobbs" has a Wookie Bowcaster, cuz he's playing the part of "Chewbaka." Where as Calvin is playing our favorite nerfherder of all times, Han Solo.

"never tell me the odds." +P

Oregano - You want tips on colour? Can't see why. That's great... love the detail in the brown bits - and you've painted the tentacles in a way that really captures the difference in texture. Lovecraft influence?

euda - mean't to be a pic'? I can't see one.

DV8 - real nice characters and strong pose, but I am thrown by the fact that the hands have 3 fingers and a thumb and the feet only have 2 little toes and a big toe. Don't mind me... just a little thing I regularly see in many pic's that doesn't sit right with me. :p

hehe thats funny that you mention it. My background is in animation...cutting down on the fingers is a good and classic trick for simplying the hands. Take a look at mickey mouse, or the simpsons, etc (too many to mention). As far as the toes go, it just kinda ended up that way. Personally when I see cartoon style characters with 5 fingers it doesnt sit right with me. cutting it down to 3 makes it easier- you have one in the middle and then one on each side, and you also have more room for each finger- sometimes cramming 4 stylized fingers onto one hand is tricky. (gets too crowded).

Glad you like em though. I like your puffer fish, I was at the national aquarium last week and saw several of them. (seen them scuba diving before as well).

Hehe. Yeah I know the cartoon thing, but the number of fingers should match the number of toes... atleast I think it should.

I've only seen puffer fish when I was a kid, but I remember them looking uber cool chillin' out and doin' their thang... or something.

Lovecraft? No, not on this one anyway. More a certain 6 year-old's influence :D I *am*, however, doing some Lovecraft stuff for Fantasy Flight Publishing right now, hence the hectic schedule. I put up a couple of concepts in my sketchbook.

What I'm looking for more is not so much how to color, but how you manage to get such wonderful atmosphere, or ambiance or whatever you want to call it, with your color. You look at mine next to yours. Mine is acceptable but falls flat, yours glows. It seems to be something that you pull off with almost all of your pictures. It's a technique I've noticed with a few artists and I've not been able to satisfactorily reproduce it.

I'm especially interested in how you do this.

P.S. btw, here's a detail of the the jelly for you :D

Basically I think of the thumb as a separate element of the hand... 3 fingers=3 toes (a middle and one on each side) :)

BTW I checked out your website, cool stuff!

later dude!

In my parallel universe, the easter bunny has chocolate fur and steals kids easter eggs and hords them for his own demented needs...

About 1.25 hours in Painter.

It's a shame that not more people came out to play today...

Morr - I love your loose style and the difference in scenes works well.
Jabajawoolu - Happy birthday... mine's soon too.
jerO - I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes and what a great way to portray them.
retrop - Hahhah that is great!! My first thought on this subject was to have a creature in the computer drawing me, but you nailed it better than mine would have.
Gumdrop - OH MY!!! That is freaking awesome. The lighting and textures in your scenes always shines through... Great work man. And your site looks very nice as well. I am working on my new one now.
Oregano - I know that you didn't submit this today, but wow!! That is so cool. And the close up is bad ass.
DV8 - Hhah that is cool. It reminds me of that old arcade karate game from the 80's. And as they said on a making of the Simpson's, "It saved hundreds of hours of animators time to draw one less finger on each hand."
Cold - Woah, a sexy Silver Surfer and an old, decrepid one. Nice contrast and shadows.
jasonka - Nice idea, but instead of just inversing the image in photoshop (or some other paint program), you should have just drew another image. It just gives much more to your work.

how opposite do you get? Heaven, hell...Jesus/God, Satan.

Been so struggling with this lately. And I'm not talking about the drawing.

http://www.sandturtlecreations.com/art/universe_opposites_small.jpg

Gumdrop - loving the concept. The buildings are cool how you did them with that brush.

Morr - great concept! I would have only done two things a bit different; put the sun dead center so you could have half in fire world, half in ice world, and make the ice world a little deeper in colour so it didn't look as washed out next to fire world. Really liked it though, great idea/concept.

if nature could get a few licks in...

http://filebox.vt.edu/users/amarano/cody/naturefb.jpg

how opposite do you get? Heaven, hell...Jesus/God, Satan.

Well if you look at the 'idea' that God and Jesus are different... God being the all knowing all seeing all mighty and Jesus being the cat who died to pay for the sins of a bunch of ingreats who replaced the dinosours after 65 million years of God sitting around watching 3's company reruns...

Ol "Lucy" (i bet he gets called that alot) was the Allmighty one's favorite angle who one day went "old' on a min, boss. Um... whats up with this?" you know doing that whole "adolsent questioning athoruty" thing that we all go through and got his butt kicked down town.

where as Jesus there, did no wrong came down did his job, and came back to sit at the right hand of god... I dono. Whats so oppisite about it? The only differnace I see is one person who questioned athority was punished for all eturnity and the one who blindly followed orders "like a good solider" was rewared with paradice.

oh wait.. comepare that to our current 'millitary' and that is quite a contrast indeed... how profound! kudos, I say to you.

Thanks for all the comments peep's. :chug:

Oregano - The detail looks fantastic... real squiggly. As for the colour/atmosphere thing, I don't really know what I do that might be of any help to be honest. I usually play with the contrast/brightness settings a little once I have my base colours down, and those glaze brushes are great for adding richness and bringing out the texture. Hope this helps.

oregano- i think if you were to just limit your palette a bit more you would find a more cohesive image
your jelly fish is great but theres no real atmosphere
i think an orange color lyer at about 17 to 25 percent opacity might pull it together a bit more
great werk gumdrop!

Sheldon, I get it, in an alternate universe god and satan ACTUALLY exist!
