Hi there-

I'm working on my personal game art portfolio, trying to get some pieces together for to show my ability to model and texture environments and architecture based on concept art. I could spend hours/days coming up with my own concepts to create but I figured since in most positions I would be taking someone else's concept and working from it, then the practice of doing so might be good. I find when I concept, I end up drawing in ways that would make sense to me as a modeler, whereas in real situations the translation may not be as challenge-free.

So basically I'm looking to find either resources or individuals whom have some well-defined sci-fi and/or fantasy environments and/or structures that they would permit me to model from for a personal portfolio.

Likewise if there are any more appropriate forums for me to post this request on please let me know!

I dont think that re-using someone elses work is a good idea in a portfolio mate, your portfolio is an insight into your work and not how you can re-work or improve someone elses.

with that in mind have a look at architects web sites may be they have some sample photos of projects that you can use for inspiration, I did a quick google search on great buildings and a lot of interesting stuff leapt out. Have a go at that and be inspired.

Remember we get work by being original but if you do have to rework an idea make sure it is properly referenced to whoever did it first, honesty counts and its better than being caught out and looking an idiot in an interview situation.

Hope this helps you, all the best

Wow old post I forgot about.

Actually as a professional environment artist you're constantly working from other artist's concepts; rarely are you creating your own concept art when that is someone else's job they are paid to do, which is specifically the reason I was seeing permission to work from the art of others.

I could spend time creating my own concept art but showing that you can work from the work of others is an important skill that I was hoping to represent.

Thanks for the input however and I get what you are saying, It's just that for this particular aspect of my portfolio the intent was very specifically to work from the art of others.
