Teen Challenge 112: Jedify Yourself

Topic
This week's topic is Jedify Yourself!, so basically, a self portrait of you as a Jedi, whether it be jedi apprentice, jedi knight, jedi elder, is up to you! but it has to look like YOU. Also, don't copy off darth vaders design or yoda, design something unique and original. You may also draw something comical like your face on yoda or annikan, as long as it reaks of YOU. Post a photo of yourself too, so we can see the likeness :D

Focus--NOW MANDATORY
Focus is a new addition to the Teen Challenges to... well, challenge you a bit more!

This week's focus is Mood. Make your image moody, scary, happy, one that makes you shit yourself or ejaculate, it's up to you, but it has to convey a mood!

Deadline
The deadline is Sunday 20th of March, 23:59 GMT

You've got a week from now, so what are you waiting for?!

Hahahaha I like how after you realized my idea of a zombie self portrait was done by CHOW, you just change it to Jedi! Get your own ideas! Just kidding, great topic man.

Now that I am on break I have no excuse not to enter. This is going to be fucking fun.

I am hoping this week, to get one stage better. How will you know it looks like us XD would you like a picture of ourselves as well as an entry or something?

ryan mcshane
March 14th, 2011, 05:39 AM
Platinguard, that'd be a good idea! haha thanks for mentioning that :D
yeah post a picture of you, at least in the wips thread so we can see a sort of likeness
:D

Hmmm... we'll have to see how my life goes this week, but hopefully I'll join in. :)

Oh, and is it alright if we do little things like alienify ourselves on top of that? Eg, suddenly green with odd skull protrusion and tatoos.

Pixie trick, I would I mean at the end of the day its an extension of your creativity :D

I know I told myself I wasn't going to do one of these challenges until I got a lot better, but I fucking love Star Wars.

So there is my rough sketch, I was probably a dumb ass for picking that pose because now I have to draw my face and my hands up close...

FFFFFFFF

I feel stupid for not keeping track of my WIPS very well. I spent all day on this pretty much and I like it :P

I based the drawing off the clothes I was wearing today.

that was quick O_O

Andrew Sonea

hu-ha: Nice start, I want to see it finished! Make sure you make the face recognizably you, right now it is a bit cartoony maybe? It is still very early, so hard to critique much. You may also try changing the pose slightly as it is a bit stiff right now.

Lunatic Hermit: I like how you chose to do a closeup portrait. Can't really say much since it is so early still. I am not really sure why he is hovering the cube and holding the lightsaber though...perhaps change it to have both hands on the lightsaber? You can also try to change the angle of it so it isn't perfectly horizontal, it may break the static qualities of the image a bit and make it more interesting. Just a suggestion though.

Forrest_I: Wow, that WAS quick. You still have time, so why not work on it more? It is already looking quite good, I only see two little things I might address. First, the lightsabers--you have them entirely red. If you put a pure white in the center of them have it fade to the red they will read as light sources better (see http://www.ratewall.com/cpics/e7135759-0827-4e53-9820-461f365ebe81_villains-DarthMaul.jpg). The other thing is that the ear position looks a little off, so just change its location and angle a touch and it will be great. Other than that, since you have so much time left you can add a background maybe, but I don't know if it is really necessary. Looks great!

Just mushing about some crap on canvas...I kinda like the direction of the first sketch, but I will need to do some serious reworking of the composition. Yeah... I think that's what I'll do, don't like how it crops out me so much and just the organization of elements in it in general. Maybe change the angle of my lightsaber. Okay, maybe I don't like it so much haha. DAMN YOU COMPOSITION!

March 15th, 2011, 09:12 PM
Andrew, thanks for the critique. I would work on this more but I know I'm gonna start workin on TAD homework tomorrow and I really wanna try and enter this week's CHOW also. Anyway, I tried fixing what you suggested, how's it look now?

Forrest_I: Much better :)

I AM SO INDECISIVE WHAT DO I DO?????? aslkdfjklsajfklsdaf;lsdafj

Seriously, I can't decide on any of my sketches. I keep changing the light saber position, trying out a horizontal composition, trying out who knows what. I think I am also using extreme values a bit too much maybe and not doing enough midvalue stuff. I NEED HELP! Which one looks best out of all I have posted? Should I just scrap all of this and start afresh?

I am leaning towards either the first or last one in this post, or the second one if I add in a hint of a background...

PS: Sorry guys for spamming this with a bunch of essentially the same thing...

Awh. well done everyone, should really start mine. I tried to start it but got distracted by school work... I hate school I can't get anything decent done. I seriously only ever get Sunday thats why my work normally feels and looks rushed -__-

Can't believe people are finishing 2 days in :O

Lunatic Hermit
March 16th, 2011, 04:56 AM
Platinguard: I should be doing schoolwork right now too, instead I choose to cut down on sleep. x_x

Andrew Sonea: dammit so good. :( I like them all, but if I had to pick the one I liked the most I think it would be the last one.
It just seems really dynamic to me (it would probably show more of your face too? Which is the point of the challenge, well that and mood :P)
You could pick any of 'em though and it would still turn out awesome.

As for me, I have not made much progress. I have no clue how I am going to paint this...
The only thing that really changed is the face (put my features where I think they should be) and the light saber angle. I feel like there should be something more in the picture though. Anyway, if some of you guys could tell me if the head is too small, or the hand is too small, or something, that would really be awesome. :D

(Hopefully if I pull off the lighting I will look scarier than this...)

Forrest: looks pretty sick dude! :D andrew already pointed out the errors so yeah, keep it up!
Andrew: my favourite is this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1191293&stc=1&d=1300237617) you look more powerful and badass, like ' oh yeah just killing people ' rather than 'FUCK YEAH KILLING PEOPLES SO HARDDDDD' and you get to see more Spock face ;D keep rocking it dude!
Lunatic: looks rad dude! keep painting it :D
hu ha: he's got a weird lean to the left, but yeah just keep working it man!

Awesome start Ryan. I almost did a multi armed version of me haha. My only crit is that now it is like everything is flattened out on one plane. Like all the arms spread out perfectly to the side. Maybe put on or two more foreshortened?

Platinguard
March 16th, 2011, 10:32 AM
Lunatic hermit: Haha, I would cut down on sleep but the thing is I need to focus, 2 months and I have my final exams. then I have a good 4 months of nothing before i go to uni where I am studying games development. I currently have an offer from triumph studios to work with them in my 3rd year :D I know my concept art sucks by my 3D modeling and animation skills are rather good. XD

Andrew: loving the action shot and what you are leading into, it looks really fantastic so far.

Rynoir: Ah rynoir, as usual you give us an interesting and out of the blue peice, I look forward to its completion :D

Thank you for comments guys!
Andrew Youre so astoundingly hard-working!
Forrest: how fast ;o
ryanoir: that wip is mad, i like it.

Oh my sketch was very rough but i even liked it, so i worked a bit. Also i found few errors im going to repair. I wanted to do digital painting like normal person BUT NEAT LINES EVERYWHERE. Im feeling very very lame and bad. Forgive me face ehh I can draw ordinary selfportrait but that was stronger than me, I like just make myself look like evil creep : P I promise my next entry will be real DP.

Also i have question, how you all are doing your paintings? First sketch and then colours on new layers or are you colorizing your b&w work? I think I would feel rather uncomfortable with second option

Andrew Sonea
March 16th, 2011, 02:28 PM
hu-ha: For this one started black and white because I wanted the values to be really good for the mood. I can then add colour on top with a new layer set to "overlay", from which point I will add another new regular layer on top to tweak it and finish it up until it looks good. But I don't always work this way, sometimes start straight with colour. Experiment and find what you like best :)

Finally going in a direction I am a little more pleased with. Might change up the arc of molten flesh a bit. Comments and crits more than welcome.

Ryainoir: I thought your painting was pretty INTENSE when you just had glasses on. Then it turned into steampunk goggles/sunglasses and I'm all "oshit"
On another note, maybe add some white to the shirt or something? You probably already considered that though.

Vivi: Dang, you're self portrait is spot on. I await the finished product :O

Don't really know what else to do with this. Scared of color.
(Edit: noticed some stuff that was wrong, like the hilt. But yeah)

looking great though dude!

Lunatic Hermit: Raynoir is spot on in his crit. :) I'd also like to point out how much more dramatic the photo is- it has a much higher level of contrast which is the main cause of this. I think if you tried to aheive the same in the painting you could really up the excitement level.

Although the fov of a cellphone-camera or any camera using a small lens such as a webcam etc, isn't true, or even close to, the fov you see in real life.

So i'd say focus more on the proportions (like, the eyes being a bit too small) and keep going, cause its looking good so far!

Yar, Lunatic Hermit, more contrast. Darker darks. Keep it up, man.

Nice one Ryan, though I agree with Lunatic. Maybe add something to break up all the browns. Doesn't have to be a very contrasting colour, but right now it's looking a little stale.

Hěn hǎo, Vivi! Nǐ hěn piào liang. (:

ryanoir: yes, je suis une fille XD, awww sorry for being imtimidating, your pic looks awesome!

vivi: Looking good! Just make sure the lightsaber looks more like a lightsaber and not just a stick.

Aksel: I laughed so hard when I saw you actually put that as your sig haha. Out of context it is hilarious (even in context it was a bit odd now that I think about it...).

Still plugging away at mine now, but don't want to post it until I'm finished. I'm pretty happy with how mine is turning out actually. Hopefully will finish tonight at some point, may have to work on it tomorrow a bit though.

Gee ... well I'm epically behind! I'm workin to get this done before the deadline. Here is my current wip and the photo ref. needless to say i'm taking creative liberties with my hair.
EDIT: yah, sorry for the ridiculous image size. you can just right -click and view image. :( I really need to get the hang of this crap.

Platinguard
March 20th, 2011, 10:53 AM
The cosmic hyena - how large do you want your work O.O

Vivi - Once again your have kicked ASS! I know who im voting for XD Its the likeness to your actual image really, you combine pencil and digital art incredibly well.

Rynoir - Just checked finals, looking really good finished :D nice colour separation in the end :D

Andrew - Amazing, lighting looks fantastic, although you may have spent too much time on the focus and not enough on your face, I think the mood could have been achieved through expression HOWEVER, the action shot is superb.

Next one I am going to attempt to do :D Its just finding the time.
