DESCRIPTION
New age has come, and people in fantasy world now live in peace and harmony. It is a time of development, modern design and technology. Everyone lives their ordinary lives and working for the betterment of the society in huge cities and metropolies covering the earth.
Design a fantasy character working in today's society.
Examples:
Scientist gnomes
Businessman elves
Dwarf truck driver
Orc janitor
Ogre policemen
Things to remember:
Can be male or female
Any fantasy race is applicable, as long as it is a character, not a creature
Keep in mind to make the character fit into the job that you chose
We do not want to see warriors, it is a time of peace after all
The style and era here is modern, not sci-fi or steampunk
Good luck, and be creative!

OMG seriously ....I shivered for a moment when I read this ...this is truly awesome ! its rare that, given a random topic, immediately images shot through my head but it did this time ! hopefully I can manage something cool because folks I am on fire for this weeks topic ! I was/am a HUGE fan of SHADOWRUN the pen&paper RPG ...if some of you need inspiration go for it ...its basically a world exactly like the one mentioned in this topic ...for those who know nothing about it: the setting ( when i first started ) is the year 2056 ( the latest edition starts in the 2070s) in Seattle, WA its said that its our world (plus Cyberpunk) but Magic has reawaken, and a huge epidemic in the 2020s activated long lost DNA sequences so that some men started to evolve into Trolls, Dwarfs, Elves, Orcs ezc ..basically all the fantasy races possible ....so go for it and google it its probably one of the best universes ever created in fantasy-business hugely influenced by late 70s and early 80s Cyberpunk ...created in the 80s its packed with freaked out shit and ideas and guys like PAUL BONNER drew a lot of the images for the game ...I personally think this (Shadowrun) might actually be THE ressource of inspiration for this weeks CHoW ...will upload a picture-sheet later on
thinking of: a elvish Firemage making Hot-Dogs with its own Fire, or the Gnome Chimney-Sweeper ......the actual Gnome being its own scrubber ^^...stuff like that
stay tuned

i know you said no warriors, but seeing as todays world is anything but peaceful, i was wondering if the rules could possibly be stretched to include an ancient race that has been influenced into joining a miitary of one of the super power countries? i think that might be relevant to the topic, no?

Partisan- amazing inspirations- these pictures really get me fired up for this challenge too!
NickyBeats- this really made me lol. Love the guys sliding down as the giant bends the beam :)
ChaoticKnight- WOW! This one is so awesome and fun- I'm in love already
Jager- I think I especially like the two people standing next to him like there's nothing unusual at all about the Orc (plus the orcs face is made of win)
Here's my first little sketch- I started thinking of dragons for some reason- imagining what they'd be doing in this modern world; and the idea of a modern fantasy zoo popped into my head- with an elf for a zookeeper. Not too sure about it though...

Hmm, Troll tax auditor? Dwarven bartender is a bit obvious I guess, especially in an Irish pub or something... Gnome designer ? Elven stewardess / beach volleyball player / lingerie model ? Orcish show wrestler? Halfling oktoberfest waitress? So many choices
@chaoticKnight: Wicked! The concept alone is golden already!

I think there something that needs to be set in stone early in the week about this topic. The way I'm interpreting it is no weapons, bellicose professions etc. However, I'm seeing a lot of idea thrown around for fighter pilots, cops with guns, etc.
The way I understand the topic is that we are looking for things like a Goblin carnie, dwarf construction worker, Orc bus driver, etc. Are we allowed to use jobs such as cops, etc?

I think they're larger versions of orcs and are known to eat humans. As for their features; they're kinda stocky, rounded, and have thick proportions but tall when using a person for comparison. Though that might be more of my interpretation than what folk lore suggests.

Jager - I really like the scale... and the brief case is perfect!
Chaotic Knight - I think thats a great idea, the composition works well.
Here is my idea, a witch that has become a lawyer, corrupt and evil used by the guilty to escape justice either with legal loopholes or maybe a spell or two.
M - I feel orges are uncomfortable, too large for themselves and clumsy. Probably breaking their surroundings, either by accident or through frustration of not being able to communicate... shrek?

@slence: Looks great! I like fdisk's suggestion: ready, set cook!
@fdisk: heh, eat your heart out Charlie Sheen in Wall Street!
@blackrobin: yay, elven flight attendant! Promising start. Maybe she ought to have a decorative elegant earring or something. Not those circle ones, but the pin version.
@Mateja: I can hardly wait to see how this'll progress ... your last entry + your sketchbook I'm going through atm are fabulous! I do prefer the WIPs most of the time though, they often feel more vibrant.
@vineris: very original, don't see anyone else coming with alternative races like these.
@Dayle: Great idea! She indeed could be a bit more wicked. Maybe she ought to have black hair and a cold expression in her eyes, yet with a smile on her lips ... brrr
@Sgt. Spanky: Funny idea! a bit flat atm. Maybe you can put them in a barber shop? Gru's legs are also a bit too much to the front I think and his belly would be more saggy due to gravity.
@JanJager: Nice! He reminds me of Stellan Skarsgård somehow!
@Pixeltuner: Oh how the mighty have fallen ... I'd figure she'd at least have her own window with red light. ;)
@sinnerMan: Ha! I particularly dig the sense of weight!
@pixelfuture: cool, I can totally see them wood elves doing that in modern days!
@Gobi: The badge, lol! Looks promising!
@drunken_drinker: Great idea! And a pretty solid view on modern youths ...
@UCT: Cool! Maybe he ought to be one of those tv priests, with a giant neon light cross behind him.
@vrt: nice start! how about showing him with his hooves up on a desk?
@f o x: I like the coroner better! Maybe you can show him just realizing he's cutting himself instead of the dead body?
@parasakoira: Wow, Looks great! And I'm amazed at the speed with which you did it.
@Tawnos: Don't give up yet, keep at it! Only way to progress is by doing it after all!
@ChaoticKnight: Nice update, going well!

My initial idea was a male Elven pop idol, based on those K-pop idols, but eventually I wanted to do an orc instead. Now how am I going to explain to my friends I have a folder filled with half naked, sweaty Korean pretty boys? nvm, I'll just put it on my desktop and call it "secret folder", that way they'll never find it!
Another idea I was thinking of was a goblin F1 driver with gnome pit crew (and elven race queen :D ), but since I'm a bit pressed for time I decided on the simpler one.

About the dragon question (because its been asked several times ) - I WOULD SAY : as this is CHoW and not CoW we might focus on human-alike races even though there might be creatures which are quite intelligent and do have a own character with needs and not just instincts its part of the competition rules which separate this clearly into human-like and creature, I myself am not the biggest fan of this restriction but I would say to keep this simple just try not to use creatures

@Partisan: so, it has to be humanoid. what about god from mythology?
I know that you asked Partisan, but since someone else asked this question, I feel that some sort of conclusion needs to be made about this subject matter. (Pardon me if this has already been addressed by one of the mods).
So, I looked up "mythological creatures" on Google and came up with this site:
http://www.mythicalcreaturesguide.com/
To my surprise it includes the Egyptian gods. And although I feel that there should be a greater distinction between theology and mythology, for the purposes of this prompt; I would say that any un-discovered (not scientifically viable) humanoid creature believed by any culture to have been apart of this earth should be able to come to life in this modern-fantasy world.
So, long story short, they should be allowed.
I would only caution that as so many of the ancient gods look exactly or extremely like humans, you must be very careful to make their identity known so that they will still fit into the prompt.

I think you guys are overthinking this race thing. As long as it's got two arms, two legs (or is otherwise humanoid in shape) and is smart enough to put its own clothes on in the morning it's probably fine. Fantasy covers a lot of ground.
As for gods, look at your character. What is the difference between a fantasy god and a really powerful fantasy wizard? Does your idea depend on the character actually being a *god*? Is there any reason why it has to be Bast rather than an egyptian-themed cat-headed chick? Is there any reason why there can't be a race of these things? Conversely, if you want Zeus and his lighting bolts why not make up a race that can harness electricity rather than insist on it being a guy in a toga?
Think outside the box here. When it comes to fantasy everybody runs to Tolkien and World of Warcraft but you could depict a tribe of sentient teapots as long as you presented them as reasonably intelligent humanoids.

partisan: hahaha no hitting coming from my direction. Its a valid point. But it ties into why I don't have a desk in fornt of him. It would not only break the 3/4 rule. But also not give as much of na overall concept of what this character looks like. I do agree it is leaning on the illustration side right now. How would you suggest i make it more of a concept? I'm thinking of lighting him more with the frontal light so you can get a better look at his actual design.
M: thanks for the ideas. But like I said to partisan, I need to show him facing forward without a desk in the way to avoid breaking the 3/4 rule. By the way, yours is shaping up nicely I'm a big phil hale fan as well.

@Roselyn, looking at your pic I'm not sure exactlywhat race the waiter is. But more, its a little hard to tell how exactly he would differ from a normal waiter, the pose and environment all seem to be taken rather directly from our world. A little personality could make your piece more engaging. What about your character would make him a good or poor waiter? Find those points and emphasize them.

1191280
Its a difficult pose and still very rough but any crits on the basic anatomy would be greatly appreciated.
So, to get a better idea of the pose I looked up some pictures of poll dancers in similar positions and I thought that I'd share:
1191391
Then I did a paint over to better illustrate what I wanted to say. In your original drawing, the torso, lower body, and right leg are all in a subtle perspective. The upper body, however, wasn't. To put the upper body into the same perspective I shortened the distance between the left boob and the end of her rib cage. I also lifted up her left shoulder. The key element was her left arm, which I put into a more dramatic perspective. This was mainly just to help emphasize that her chest is being thrust forward. I also moved her head up and to the left a bit because of the change in the shoulders. With her face, I put it into a frontal profile position just because I find it alluring. However, this is an opinionated, stylistic choice!
The left leg, with its extreme profile view, looks flat and disconnected. All I did there was shift the knee cap so that it was closer to the viewer and shift the foot so that the other toes are slightly visible.
The wing is also another thing that was of my own opinion. I merely turned it up to give it more volume and to give her position added symmetry.
1191392
Any who, wonderful drawing and concept! There was very little to "edit." I hope this helps! X3

Hey people, this is my first time actually getting to produce something for this. I have tried and failed before due to other work getting in my way, I have decided this time that this will be a good exercise for me to unwind after working on my current gig that has me drawing in an unfamiliar art style (feels like my brain is melting), so far it seems to be working.
Anyway, I need notes. I'm not sure about the background or the composition ( may just get rid of it all and add a more minimal plain for him to be standing on). Also, I had concerns that this character might be too goat-like to qualify for this.
Let me know what ya think, I am planning on doing more of these in the future.

Could I get the word on if my Comp. isn't showing enough of the figure from the Moderator? If I need to extend it further down, I suppose I could, my actual composition actually extends quite a bit HIGHER above the figure and I'd prefer to keep it the way it is, but I will change it to meet requirements...

Slence, the only thing that is bothering me are the hands. They seem a little too beefy and manly for an elven female. I would also push the shadows a little bit more to, especially in the waist area to really push the dynamics of your posing. If you slim them up a tiny bit and keep up a consistent quality in the foreground elements you'll have a very strong final.

My major pet peeve when I see a lot of suits being drawn or rendered here on CA is that no one pays attention to what side the jacket buttons on. Right now, from what you've drawn, he's wearing a ladies' jacket, because it buttons on the wearer's left. If you're a guy and you have a suit in your closet, go grab the jacket, lay it out on the bed and button it, and you'll see what I mean.
It's a detail, but it's an important detail - like knowing which side of the hand your thumbs should be drawn. But it's a detail I constantly see done wrong here on this site... :) Don't fall into the trap! :)

I think if s/he had pink elbow-length gloves, it could totally be a riff on Marilyn Monroe doing the "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" number...!
Come to think of it, if this is a drag act, the costume/outfit is a bit restrained - most drag queens, unless they're going for "realness" (ie. looking like a woman), take it way over the top - either full camp or full crazy glamour. The addition of rhinestone earrings, big chunky rings and/or bracelets, and extravagant makeup would really help sell the drag performer angle. A good Google search or a trip to the website for that show Ru Paul's Drag Race will show you what I'm talking about...

This drives me crazy because it's a convention that makes no sense any more and it's difficult for people like me to remember because a). I don't wear many things with buttons, b). when I do I don't button them and c). if it's in my closet it's just as likely to be a guys' jacket as a girls' jacket.
It's crazymaking.

The messenger back you have isn't really quite working. You may want to try something that looks a little more official, like a mail carriers bag or maybe something that is more along the lines of a backpack with a cross-strap over he chest, almost like a parachute or something that pilots would wear, Also, I don't think that more of a uniform would be a bad thing.

Dayle, is the demon fellow the one on the right? and if so he's too close to the edge of your "canvas."
And I'm not sure if the cauldron you're referring to is the one at the lower right of the canvas, but if it is, you're going to have a hard time convincing me that its light will reach your demon's face, since it appears to be well forward and down from his position and blocked by the edge of the stand he's sitting/standing on.
If the guy is demonic, why do you need to show us the source of the intended fiendish glow? Why not just light your character as though he's standing over some hellish portal or a glowing pentagram? In this case I don't think the cauldron need be your light source.
Of course all of the above hinges on whether or I not I understand who is what and what goes where...
Also, I believe that you have a lot of real estate at the lower left corner that is now occupied by frogs. Perhaps later I'll get the connection, but the placement of your principal "players" (i.e., your lawyer woman, the demon fellow) is slightly off.
Feel free to bludgeon me if I've said too much...

Heyyy there. Just one thing. In my *ahem* experience, it is pretty much physically impossible to hang just by your leg as your succubus is doing there. Easy fix though.
Tilt her upper body (or lower since she's hanging upside down!) back toward the pole, and move her arm back as though the back of her shoulder (between the arm and shoulder blade) is gripping the pole as well. It's what anchors a dancer to the pole in that upside down leg hold. ;)

GEB — I am truly disturbed, and I think a major part of that is the fact that the texture of your ogre's sequin dress almost mirrors the pustules/warts on its back. Great! Fabulous lighting and a brave combination of the grotesque and glistening. I look forward to a bravura finish!
blackrobin — I concur with NZOB1; there's nothing wrong with a pretty picture. I think you could push this and see some fabulous results. The color palette is lovely, especially on those wings. Maybe just sass up her expression and have her head turned toward the viewer? (If you want to see boring take a gander at mine... lol)
ArtByManon — I love the concept and the expression on your character's face. I'd like to see lighting that reminds me more of ski footage, perhaps.. greater contrast?
JanJager — what Dread Reaper said pretty much summed it up for me. Maybe you need to tint the background?
NZOB1 — be careful of tangents: the feather duster at the top left, the ogre's left hand coming close to the line of the background fellow's shirt. With regards to the confusion Dread Reaper mentions, maybe the "blocking" of the action needs to be revisited. Perhaps a different angle?
Dayle — I think everything is much improved, although I confess I'm still not sure what is going on, which may be because you mentioned it in a previous post that I've overlooked or because of an underwhelming lack of mythological expertise on my part. Also—and I may be splitting hairs here—but I still feel like your guy in the back could move to our left a tad.
Kafka Dreams — I feel like the composition is cramped/weighted toward the top right, in part because your succubus's left wing seems to conform to the right edge of the "canvas." I think it should either extend off the right edge or the whole figure should be moved well away from the edge.
Jager — I love how the troll is coming, and the expression of the child is subtle yet expressive. Will the troll be appearing out of the air? and is that a root I see, or a tail? I look forward to seeing the answers emerge. Fabulous textures/folds on that suit and those jowls, btw!
I'd appreciate any and all critique you all are willing to offer; I don't quite know how to proceed here, and I'm not entirely sure how to create the magical wind that's supposed to be stirring the movie theater debris...
Thanks in advance!

MasterTroglodyte Thanks - you've been right so far, will adjust later... Witch, cauldron, judge, spell, frog!?!! thats the idea to my image.
My question to you is, why do you need magic wind? I think the character is strong but perhaps she could be looking at where shes cleaning? Also maybe have her between two rows of seats with the sillouettes of people sitting around, they could be the source of the popcorn throwing. Also the background could be out of focus movie credits or something lighting the image more, as it seems a bit too dark and purpley now. Hope something I've said is useful!

Here is my current progress; getting close to finishing I think. What do you all think?
@GEB, still LOVING the drag queen. I am jealous of the beautiful highlights and reflections you have.
@JanJager, I love your style, but I think that the idea of keeping the heavy outlines on the non subject matter (the other passengers) is actually working against you in this composition. My eye is drawn to them BEFORE the ogre.
@MasterTroglodyte, if you want to show her using magic to sweep the trash, I might take her front hand off the broom (have her back hand holding both tools) and make a gesture with that hand to connect her to whatever "woosh" type lines you can come up with to show wind.
@TSAD, I love your chunky style (I can never get a look so painterly) and your idea. Mermaid in space makes so much sense.
@ArtbyManon, awesome idea! you might be planning on doing this, but Those ski boots are just begging to be SUPER shiny. I think it would be a cool contrast and accentuate his feet popping out the ends.
These crits are just suggestions, as you can see I still have a lot to learn, just telling what I'm seeing.

This is a great topic! I love all the cool ideas I've been seeing here.
Okay I couldn't resist putting in my 2 cents. I don't have time to participate this round, but I had an idea I had to sketch: Jacko the troll welder. Trolls make the best welders historically they built beautiful bridges and charged ridiculous tolls for crossing.
...Mostly though as a construction worker myself I know a lot of welders so I HAD to do it.

Been so busy this week I have'nt had time to finish my character. Would be so fun to have it finished in time, it would be my first chow.
Well here's a first sketch
Redneck orc!
Any and all comments are welcome!

He's great - although at the moment he has a real sense of 'style' in his stance. Does that make sense? He looks like he should be at a posh bar in a smart suit. I would give him more of a really terrible posture. I dunno, he just looks quite dapper at the moment in his attitude - love the expression though and the clothes. Although i'd be tempted to give him a beer gut too!
