Topic = In the Hall of the Mountain King
suggested by Rambozo & composed by Edvard Grieg...

Illustate to this music!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrIYT-MrVaI

I figure it might be cool to illustrate the settings for this opus written by Edvard Grieg. Now...you can go ahead and stay true to the Peer Gynt vision with it's ogres and the lopping off of fingers if you'd like, or you can go ahead and let inspiration guide your interpretation. What's important is to capture the mood of the music and to represent the title faithfully: a Mountain King's Hall (for that matter, what IS a mountain king?)

All credit due to the composer:

nice shapes kendall

ok here what i started. In the foreground i will try to imply two figures preparing something (to seem like suspicious characters) because the music gives me something like that :)

will try to finish it to some point but i am not sure.

That's looking great--both of them. Kendall, I love the outdoors mountain 'hall'--I never thought of that.

March 12th, 2011, 11:16 AM
I imagined the hall of the mountain king as a large cavern with little huts lining the cave walls, rope bridges travelling between them. Here's like 45 min. on that...

Good idea and start. Don´t forget the perspective on the huts,

Promising start. Dramatic picture. Reflecting the music.

Great. I thought It was a photo at first. The colours and shapes are great.

I try to cut down on the ice. but after a trip on skis I cant resist completely.

Hello EOW. It's my first time posting in this forum, so have mercy. I badly need more practice on my landscape/environment, so here is my mountain king. This was fun and I look forward to seeing everyone's awesome work.

(Also I kind of just went more with the title of 'Hall of the Mountain King' because for some reason I always found the musical score sort of comical and I have no idea why.)

I’m afraid I’m gona have to sit this one out, I have a few contracts on the side commin’ in on top of work so… I’m glad to read people seem to like the theme though :)

Velocity : I really like your early sketches here. Colours are great, huge scale, integrating the outdoors, that sort of a geometrical-black-temple-axis that’s startin’ to develop. You might wanna check out the architecture of Santiago Calatrava for inspiration (from an engineering point of view there’s a touch of overkill in a lot of his designs but I quite like ‘em none-the-less), you might get some good ideas for those free-standing arcs. I also like the openness in your sketches but I’ld suggest also trying to find a way to appropriate the land further so as to establish at first glance that despite there being no walls/ceilings this whole area IS the “hall”.

Kingkostas : I prefer the second sketch as the horizontal beams help accentuate the perspective in the piece, plus it allows you to add some extra details/carvings/whatever when you hit that phase of the illo :) It’s pretty cool you put the king up high like that as well, clearly dominating over the crowd. Lookin’ forward to seein’ how you deal with the lighting in the final illo.

Si_Swe : An entire city with the hall hunh (?), could be cool :) The perspective of the cave sort of bugs me though, I feel like if it didn’t bend out of view at the rear it would help the composition : having an extra point in the distance, maybe an extra bend in the walls to give it an “s” shape, or maybe a small opening to the outside world or something.
I remember goin’ to the Eisriesenwelt in Austria and thinking holy flyin-f+ck this is cool, Maybe that might be a good ref for the caves, I’ve found a few pics for you on the net but I’m sure you can find a better pic of the opening if you search a little :

http://jezzbean.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/ice-cave-516266-lw.jpg?w=500

Jager : Great start, the warm vs. cold, camera-view peeking inside ninja-style, spyin’ on the goings on inside, really fits with the music. Euhm, keep goin’ I guess ;) (that’s a constructive comment hunh? hehe)

PokketMowse : I like the pic, get a good feeling for the wind, the cold, isolation. That works for me, but I’m feeling like the “hall” is sort of an afterthought almost here unfortunately. Like it’s only a visual element placed in to help heighten the mood of the mountain scenery as opposed to being the center of attention. I’ld suggest sprucing it up, as Bob Ross might say “give it some little friends” or “make it’s life interesting” hehe

Awesome topic! One of my favorite classical composers. Heres what got so far. Right now, I'm trying to get the light to seem like its coming from the side like it peering through some mountains. A tiny thrones is going to be tucked away under the skull too.

Velocity : Awesome concept! I really like the arches!

Kingkostas : I like the camera tilt. The staging looks very dynamic can't wait to see more.

Si_Swe : Great start! You might want to put down a line to represent the eye level if so you can easily tell whats being looked up or down on.

Jager : Looking good! Would like the see some more light on the throne to pop it out.

PokketMowse : Nice! I'm liking atmosphere in this. Keep pushing it.

Partisan: Nice start! I've been digging your chows great to see you doing the eow.

lovely work everyone!!!
PokketMowse- The work seems finished at some point. I mean now u can either keep up polishing , i mean keep up playing with the rendering, or the other way is to make big changes in the whole depiction of your idea( and usually thats why these thing is important in the beginning, so that u can have an awesome piece even from its skeleton)
I cant seem to find other way to keep playing with it :), and already it looks nice. Maybe play more with the sky back there

really struggling with this one

I feel its important to create something hat reflects the music, but its hard finding something that'll suit my illustrative style, instead I find I'm finding that its a realistic approach I have taken, which doesn't sit very well with the music.

Velocity: You're going some steps away from the typical Ideas. I really like that!

Twig: I like your idea most for now. It reminds me on a card from the game "Magic: The Gathering" but I can't remember what card it was, the only thing I remember is that it is an artifact card that allows you to draw one more card every upkeep (for the Magic players in here, maybe someone can help me remember.)

kingkostas: Yours looks most finished for now. Nice to see that you're one of the most active guys I've seen in the last few weeks.

Loakers: I really like yours right now. Looks really environmental in that way, that I can go through it in mind. Like it would be a dungeon in a computer game. Cool!

vrt: I like your piece, but I'd like to see more details on the rocks your king is standing. Do more environmental work, try to not focus on the king or the entities. Anyway it's cool!

Partisan my friend, I got more the idea of a light in a slot. A little lightspot coming through your walls of stone. I really like the way you are painting. Your techniques are damn good for your actual level. That's worth very much!

BTW: This is my first attempt to get involved to EOW :)

Hey all, just dropping off another WIP shot. I've decided to make all the structures a lot smaller, an I'm going to be making that fire a lot smaller to enhance the sense of scale of the piece. I'm still really new to enviros as a whole, so any and all advice is much appreciated.

tasser- thnx mate :)
Sean McClain- interesting texture play mate

well i somehow lost interest with the previous piece, and the more i looked into it the more i felt it focused more on the mountainking rather than the environment.
Btw the landscape masters where diminishing humans in their works :) to give the glory of the environment. Anyway i am trying things :)

Moreover, because yesterday i burnt my brain improving my 3d skills, i wanted to play with a 3d base, so i created this scene, which i feel it depicts better what the music gives out.

Lets keep up !!!

Kingkosta: Thanks! Love the contrast you got going on here. Awesome 3D! I've seen guys apply a simple checker texture on their model. It makes for placing patterns on the walls and floors much easier.

Tasser: Thanks. I think your talking about the Howling Mine. Boy its been awhile since I played Magic. Good sense light. Keep refining.

Android411: Nice! You could put some reflections on the center circle part. It looks pretty shiny already i think some reflection would really sell it. Be careful with the sharpening. Its really easy to overuse the unsharp mask.

Si_Swe: Looking Good! I like the the small huts really does give it a larger sense of scale.

brambor: Good start! Think about adding more bounce light on the ceiling. Has more of a ruined and empty vide going right now.

Veshkau: Good sense of scale. Hope to see some more structural elements on bridge to make it seem really sturdy. Keep it up!

El_Khan: Be aware of where the light is coming from. One value is very dominate through your whole piece, break it apart and always paint the light. Keep going!

Xbert: Thank you! Nice start. Love the king's throne. Good light and color

Sean McClain: I agree with KingKosta on the texture. Nice!

vrt: Beer and Dwarfs what a great combo. :) Foreground looks a bit dark. Keep Going.

Loakers: Looking Good! Keep pushing the values. The entrance and the chair both seem to be there own focal points. I think you might want to draw more focus on the chair as the main focal point. Hang in there if you're still struggling. Use plenty of reference and if you find yourself not getting anywhere take a break and come back with a fresh eye. :)

Partisan: Thanks! Hope its not too intimidating :) Keep working in those values.

Velocity Kendall: This is plain awesome! Really like the idea. Would be cool to see something or someone in there to help reference the scale. Nice Work!

Ok! finally got around to working on this today. I think I got the light down pretty well and I'm about to start adding in architectural elements like columns. Not sure what to do with the top just might keep it really rocky.

:)
Jan Jagger - nice color choice, I have no crits yet

Pocket mouse - seems a fine entry, mayby just refine it abit.

Partisan - A little bit of civilization in there and I think you're fine.

Vrt - I like it, think i'd remove the support beam/pillar in the middle of the crowd though, that would somewhat help the composition.

King kostas - it needs a third value range I think, unless you are going for the two tone vibe

Tasser - A little too blurry

Si Swe - Seem like thats gonna need a lot of detail to work, not sure the front platform is gonna work for the picture, hope you pull it of.

Sean McClaine - It leans abit but nice Idea.

Xbert - Seems interesting, if alittle centralized hope you'll finish strong.

Twig -It might just be me, but I was really hoping for a top hat on that skull :D.

Loaker - lighting from the hole at the top to the throne is bothering me, because it seems bended

Kendall - your picture doesnt capture the sence of "in the halls of the Mountain king, but I love that idea, I think the first image related to subject and was very orignal.

Flame Unquenchable- Thats a very centralized composition, be careful not to make it to static and undynamic

Veshku - I'm totally looking forward to see what you're gonna do with that

Android411 - I hope you can pull out a nice final render on that, colums are abit flat, and the dark areas needs more. I think you can fix it by simply brushing on everything some more.

I'm not gonna join in, even if i did a buttload of thumbs that i hated, just wanted to throw in my two cents, hope it helps, many strong contenders this time :)

Ok some comments, i hope some are helpful, anyway great works so far !!

Roddy : Interesting color contrast, but i dont think is working as a compocition ..
i would move the hall to teh center or to the left.

Flame_Unquenchable: Looks nice, i agree with Incinerated but you can allways add some variation later.

~Twig: Interesting aproach .. i know the hall is there but im not allowed to see it :S
haha .. very nice colours to.

Velocity Kendall: I dont see a hall yet .. but it surely looks neat!

xbert's: Good start, looks paceful (:

Veshkau: mmm.. well..isnt a hall .. but it looks great, great mood and atmosphere.

android411: Looks great , just need some variaty and some people to make the place alive.

brambor: The perspective is a little off... try fixing that and will look nice.

kingkostas: Love the atmosphere and mood in this one ...
the only but is that for me looks more as a temple.

Sean McClain: Cool textures ... but i dont think the shot is too interesting yet...
maybe with a stronger light coming from inside.

Si_Swe: Looking grest .. but you are right, with that flame looks like the
structures are for mini people.

vrt: fat, drunk, dwarf Kings Rules ! anyway i think is still a little to dark,
there should be more bouncing light from the light outside.

Loakers: I dont know where that light to the throne is coming from, but the scene looks great.

kingkostas: mmm... It looks great but it looks like an exterior.

Thanks for the crits (Android411, EL Khan) After seeing it with fresh eyes I agree the composition is beyond repair so I’ve started over.

Flaming unquenchable- Looking a little busy, contrasts seem a little harsh and blurred. Think it might all seem a bit symmetrical too. I like the idea behind it though.

Android411- Very impressive, the lighting is spot on. Maybe keep working on the ornate feel, maybe work on incorporating the mountain feel.

Twig- That's mental, love it. Great imagination.

EL Khan- Has a great claustrophobia feel, I don't mind saying I took (stole) inspiration from your pic.

Ebert- Plenty of potential, I’m not sure the the lighting is quite right, the saturated light is very central but doesn't seem to bounce of the pillars in the right place along with the statue above the doorway, unless the light is bouncing of the ceiling.

Veshkau- Epic illustration, Loving the lighting and the subtle details.

I have to say the submitted work is getting better with every new EOW... Today I fumbled around with this one...

Ragnj
March 19th, 2011, 12:45 PM
The city of Grtenbud or "The Hall of the Mountainking" as it was called by the people was built to protect the giant and rich silver mines of the King. They reached hundreds of miles into the mountain and the city worked as both protection and market for the silver. The importance of the silver mine made the city grow rapidly and soon enough it was the pearl of the empire. All that came to a sudden end when the mines had grown so big it took a lifetime of a man to carry the silver from the mining site to the city. No one wanted to spend their whole life in darkness even if the pay were incredible. Without labour the mines closed down and the city lost its only income and soon faded.

Yah, I went crazy with the textures, thanks for all the crits. I've toned down the texture and the harsh contrast...something happened when I merged down my layers as well, that's why it came out all fuzzy. So, I went back and started touching up the linework to make it stand out.

Still not sure how to break up the symmetry though.

Roddy
March 19th, 2011, 12:58 PM
Flame unquenchable- Sometimes when you're using lots of overlay and colour layers when you eventually merge them down the colours do sometimes change. What I do is duplicate the main layer and work straight on top of it then duplicate it again, this way I can easily go back a layer if I don't like how it's turning out.

Some really outstanding pieces.

Well I’m at a bit of a dead end, not sure where to go with it.

Seems I messed too much with perspective last time even though I made it directly on a SketchUp base.

ThomD: that mouth looks really scary, the color scheme works, but I would cut left side of picture just a little bit and move entrance to the cave lower.

Partisan: great mood, hope you'll manage to finish it.

Roddy: good start, maybe throw in something suggesting that this hall belongs to a king, a heraldic relief?

Flame Unquenchable: nice to see you started to bring the lines out of the fuzzyness, it still looks a bit messy though.

android411: wow, what a scale! Try to blend overlayed parts more, they stand out too much now.

~Twig: that is something twisted and insane :D (in a positive way). Love the textures and choice of colours.

El Khan: interesting choice of perspective, though I'm not certain if that hole in the left side is a window or a doorway positioned much deeper down.

Velocity Kendall: interesting and unorthodox interpretation of the topic. Really inspiring.

Veshkau: this has a potential to become epic!

kingkostas: great light and I like skewed point of view.

Roddy: A design, skull, or something like that carved into rock over the throne would be pretty kick ass.

Brambor: I'm at a loss at the moment as to how to get everything to sharpen up...I want there to be clear defined lines and shapes, but it seems like if I try to texturize it to make it look better it turns out fuzzy and messy. Just looking at Android411, KingKostas, Bnoch, etc. has helped me improve but there is something I'm missing that I can't get a handle on...but I don't know what I'm missing.

@Flame_Unquenchable - don´t get stressed by the textures, just try to get your composition and colors down and stay as loose as you can, this way you can move around things until it works for you, don´t think about rendering first, think of forground, midground, background and use according values for each of these areas. When you have an interesting compostion you can begin adding some texture, which should match with your values (you have to experiment with curves and layer modes), but be aware of puttin too large areas of textures just indicate the materials to give them some slight photographic effect. Otherwise it looks fussy as in your image. Stay monochromatic at the beginning (at least I think this is easier) and put a layer on top filled with black and set to color dodge to bring in some more colors with a soft round brush. That´s at least the way I´m working right now. Just enjoy your work and keep going, your doing a great job believe me!

I'm pretty much done. Might add the king on the throne if I have time and maybe more skulls 'cus you can never have enough.

I haven't managed to get a whole lot done on my piece, but here's an update.

I decided it would be easier to start creating a 3d scene and work from there.
This is my idea. I don't know you are familiar with the game I'm trying to draw here:

You have one person with his back to the rest of the group, counting from three to one. In the meanwhile the rest of the group has to run towards the person counting and try to reach him before he stops counting. When he stops, he turns and the rest should stay still, if not, the one that moved falls out. Over and over till someone reach the person counting.

I'm trying to draw this game here :^^: but's hard because I'm not able to draw much detail on the king (guy on stairs). So I need a gesture showing him happy,...

Not sure what else to do with it...

Android411: Thanks for the information. I normally start out in greyscale values and try to get the full tonal range for the piece before moving to colors. I really didn't think all that much about texture for my drawings until I joined this site a week or so ago, but the idea of texture and just seeing the concepts here has opened my eyes to how unfinished my previous work was without it. I tried putting texture over the color first, on this one I tried putting the texture on the greyscale... anyway putting the black over my current drawing was great. I had already used color dodge so that brought the contrast down and I could just erase out black where I needed with a soft brush to really look like the light was hitting things.

I never realized before how much shadow in the entire drawing can bring out a light effect when you erase the black. As someone who works with lighting in real life I know it, but never thought about using that technique to achieve the results. Also, I'm going to try to keep things loose in the future, I have a problem with getting a concept down and then being afraid to move away from it/change it after I get into the drawing. Many thanks!

Si swe - perhaps instead of having light in the far back you could, if you find the time :), do a mountain range or something, heres what I mean link (http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/434/paintoversiswe.jpg)

Thom D - looks like an awesome Idea hope you make it in time.

Lyno - you might wanna make the back mountain or mountains more visible just to be safe, looks like a good scene though :)

Hi all,

Great pieces all around so far! Here's my two cents, no WIP, just the final image.

I was going to go for a quieter kind of environment, but when I got to min 1:46 of Edvard Grieg's piece it totally changed my mind: it sounded like a damned forge! With steel clashing on steel, a sort of an industrial sound.

So here's my first EOW ever... scaaaaary! :)

Cheers!

Velocity Kendall Really icy and cool. I feel like I'm there, and the golden/bronze/silver/chromium arches are working for me. No further developments?
JanJager Looks like a forbidding place and hits the topic well. The tall ceiling visible from this distance is effective.
PokketMouse This is cool, as others said it needs a little sprucing up. Like autumn cleaning, it's not really necessary from the first glance but you can always find small improvements in the patchwork. Maybe the doorway, for instance.
vrt I like it, that chicken leg looks like a club though haha. For improvement, maybe his pose can be more dramatic? To echo the music, maybe a composer-like position over the dinner banquet below.
Loakers This one has a lot of interesting things going on. Concerning your slight troubles with the music, think of adding an element of epic scale with a dash of mischief. That’s what I get from the music, at least.
Tasser Can’t fully tell what’s going on but it looks like your going in the right direction with your consistent choices of cool blue colors.
Sean McClain Excellent, I like this. Some work could be done on the bottom floor though, maybe a different stone floor pattern, or something that mingles well with the wall and the staircase?
Brambor The grainy feel of this is cool, and the ‘hole to the sky’ approach to the ceiling above the throne is a nice idea, but could be executed better. Is there glass or a cathedral-like ivory pattern up there, or just a bare hole to the sky?
Veshkau Critiqued this on your sketchbook, this has a solid foundation for a nice enviro. Execution’s the next step.
El Khan Well done, didn’t expect an approach like this and it’s very imaginatively done with an assortment of detail. Critique: Everything feels somewhat cramped, including the image itself. I want to see it in a larger frame so I can take in more detail. The dragon-like creature swimming seems kind of cramped down there, and the crevice/hole in the backround is a little small-looking. The king’s throne area is also cramped - it looks like he doesn’t have much leg room, or room to stand up and pace. Hope anything helps.
Xbert really like this so far. The glow, perspective, pillar placement all seem ace so far. Keep it up!
Velocity kendall x2 I like your first one more than this but this is also a highly unique approach so good luck with it’s progression.
Twig great work. The top hat is a humorous touch and a testament to the benefit of giving/receiving feedback. You never know where it can take the mood of your piece when you experiment. Nice job.
Partisan I think your struggling to fully visualize this one. I see figures below, so your focus could be to better define their presence in this environment more, before we can take in the rest of the surroundings.
ThomD Your textures are dense, full of life in their own right. That bullish beast of an entrance is reminiscent of the tiger head from Aladdin. Nice, nice. Could be more of a haunting feel here to capitalize on the strengths of this.
Ragnj This is not bad, Jakob but as we discussed before I do think it’s missing something. Maybe more energy, or a bolder structure to latch onto. To catch the eye.
Brambor x2 The first one is better to me. This one seems ashen, black, lacking atmosphere.

might have to continue this tomorrow or during the poll when it's up. Good job all!

Hi,

This is my first environment design submission here. I decided to go with the idea of a volcano king since it takes the concept of mountain even further. Sorry for the delay in submission, I took a really long time to do this as I am quite new to this art.
