Spartan Camp #174 - 50 gestures + Optional "Gender Swap Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 20th of March.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an "Gender Swap Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:


A simple brief this time! Take any pose/figure from reference, and do a study of the same pose, but switch the gender. If the reference has a male model the study should be a female and vice versa. You may want to add a link to the original reference for the critiques afterwards!

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!


50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

I usually start everything on Sunday anyway... or not at all :( Except the heads of course :)

Interesting optional :) Especially when someone choose a gesture that is totally manly or womanly :P

Hey all,
Changed the deadline to the 20th of March. So you have a week plus a couple days this time.
Apology for the lateness, currently 'in between places' and I can't always access my computer.

I've done a few so far and gender swap is surprisingly fun. I look forward to seeing what everybody does with it.

ggnastist: there's some cool stuff happening with your hands. I really like the foreshortening on the smoking hand. And if you did all these studies in 2 minutes increments then you are getting alot of drawing done in a short time.

ReggieR3MOTE thanks reggie. I tried to keep them at 2 min each using http://lovecastle.org/gestures/ as my reference site. I've quite a few incomplete ones. i gotta get myself to do those Bridgman studies.

Erm... The usual story. I drew little and when I did, they turned out to be heads :D I won't put them here now.
But I did some messy stuff in the end... To make things worse, I'm in my pencil period. And I uploaded even the crappiest ones. Be strong and deal with it!

I tried 15 sec posemaniacs (I realized it's not my thing so stopped), some Loomis, I used photo refs and I squeezed in something from an anime as well (the ghost wolf :)).
No animals this time.

I took my own very old advice in the end and started to learn to draw a single gesture. It's somewhat simple, a standing man in 3/4 view, well, a sexy contrapost in front view is zillion times easier :D But I think it will be useful to do it till I can draw it. Mostly by myself, only depending on the reference in my memory (not a great place to store gestures, mind you). Don't worry, I won't put all here, but I wished to show where I started. And of course, I will show the interesting ones or where I feel I leveled up or something.

shinin: "I expect to be much better when i reach the 100th" man keeping up with these 50 a week goals will get you really good really fast so you're totally on the right track. You got everything going on in your studies break-downs, body language, and full figures. Keep on drawing bro.

I was out of town all weekend and only made it to 31. The pencil pages are my gender swaps. Not the best anatomy but it was a good exercise for me. Definitely made me focus on gender differences and what they look like.
