DESCRIPTION
The nomads of the North are renowned warriors; capable of surviving extreme conditions and defeating the most ferocious of arctic beasts. But these ice lords are also bound by magic as well as nature. The gifted Snowmancers conjure fantastic beings made of snow, ice and magic to aid them in hunting, fighting, even moving huge blocks of ice when constructing new buildings.

Design a Snowmancer of the Northern Nomads AND their conjured beast

Reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inuit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evocation

Things to remember:
Can be male or female
The setting is a freezing environment so make sure that the attire is appropriate
Can be any time or genre
The challenge is for both the Snowmancer and their creation

Good luck!

A snowmancer getting rid of a pesky hunter ;) I haven't really decided on what the creature will be. I was thinking some sort of bear that is formed from the snow and ice of mountains/glaciers.

Hummm...

Love this topic, it's a great chance to attempt rendering some materials I haven't worked with before, such as ice and fur.

I immediately thought of Avatar: The Last Airbender, or more specifically Rufftoon's extensive Avatar fancomic which largely takes place in the Northern Water Tribe. LINK (http://noselfcontrol.deviantart.com/art/Water-Tribe-001-69837313)

I've been a member here on CA for a while, but this is the first time I'm actually coming out of the woodwork and I have to admit, I'm nervous. But this theme is kind of awesome and I hope I can do it justice.

Here's an initial sketch.

Dread_Reaper
March 7th, 2011, 09:31 AM
@aakeju

I like the piece so far. Depending on how you integrate the creature into it will go a long ways towards determining how it will work as a composition. I like that her eyes are engaging the viewer but the expression on the face is very strange for such a dynamic pose.

And now my contribution!

So the snowmancer is just a sketch right now, he likely won't be human. He is using that crystal to unleash a SNOW DRAGON.... THING! Let me know how you think the composition works!

Scatch - Nice speed paint on the trees, but not sure I'm sold on the marshmellow guy... It is pretty funny though.

SGT Spanky (seriously ? :) - Love the idea of incorporating dinosaurs. I'm thinking about a sabre tooth tiger as a pretty awesome 'beast'.

tempest-haze - moody first sketch!

Pxel slayer - awesome start, your proportions look spot on. The cat clouds scare me a little...

logistic puppet - agreed, excellent work

parsakoira - I love the feel of your sketch, it's almost like a Herge drawing!

Elixy - Those two paintings of the bear warriors are phenomenonal!

fox - Really nice sketch, looks like you spent time on it.

aakeju - Nice pose. I think the leading hand needs a little work.

Dread Reaper - A snow dragon! Now why didn't I think of that.

Great stuff so far, guys.

Ohhh, very cool topic. Here's mine. I'm going to be adding the beast in the background, plus I need to do research on some shamanistic looking stuff to add to his attire.

Parsakoira - very cute character, I can't wait to see what you'll do for beasts. tiny crit, if you do redo the hands, maybe have something with a little more interaction with the beasts? Either way, it's looking.

Partisan -already looking pretty powerful. Loving the color scheme.

Homerid - Loving the dynamic scene, and the ice bird is awesome

Urotskidoji - loving all the thumbs. I think my fav is that bottom right one. It's the most unique imho.

fox - loving the whole feel of the scene, cannot wait to see it finished

Dread_Reaper - I like the idea of a snow dragon thing! Give it some more depth and shadows!

Parsakoira - Looks like she´s floating. Maybe a snow mantis ray? That would be original and totally illogical. But cool!

Partisan - Like your dragon too, and the shaman look of your snowmancer.

Homerid - Snow bird, that´s a cool idea! I like the beak helmet aswell, perhaps the snowmancer should have some feathers on
his mantel?

DefiledVisions - Thanks, I think I´ll go with that thumb aswell. And yeah, tentacles can be thrown in, tentacles are awesome!
Where´s your sketches dude?

MJ_Alcazar - I really like the more "modern" feelinga about him, I think you should stick with that plus shamanistic influnces
for maximum originality!

kloakatriposa - Interesting colors! I think you should add more little bastards though. Good work on the snowmancer so far!

Arthur Ritus - Viking super-hero was kindof my original ideas aswell. Really cool thought with the sabred tiger, keep it up!

Dont think I´ll be able to work more on my thumbs tonight, better spare some strength for tomorrow.

Moral of the story, guys; don't randomly decide to paint something you've never painted before while running a temperature. I just kinda stare non-plussed at the reference before forgetting which part of the thing I was meant to be working on :P

I was meant to be a snowmancer in the process of creating an ice sculpture bird thing and imbuing it with life.

Anyway, some great images in this thread, especially MatejaPetkovic's moody horned man thing, and the colours in Parsakoira's piece.

Way to totally run away with this challenge in like a day. :)

@Fetsch

I really like the positioning of the character and the creature. Very interesting, can't wait to see it rendered!

So as for me I ditched my original sketch (which looked like ass) and went with this. When I think of snow I think of wolves and so a humanoid wolf thing snowmancer thing seemed the obvious route. Still keeping the snow dragon after it seemed to be a hit with the old sketch. Here it is!

Been having a bit of trouble starting this one. I know what creature I want, but I'm having a tough time settling on the design of the snowmancer itself.

So today I just doodled.

I get the distinct feeling this is like a job class in a fantasy RPG, so I guess I felt possessed to draw a male and female design...

Now if only I could settle on one and start the real picture. D:

Just some random playing around. Went in a Lapp medicine woman direction. I figure that even the best snowmancers were novices at some point. Until they learn that temperature control interface, frostbite happens. Each step she takes, the snow and ice comes up to support her missing leg, as does the staff. May add in a series of used staffs in the background.

Oh, and MatejaPetkovic, wonderful work.

@Evil Santa

Great concept! Really pushing the limits with this one. I love the snowman and how evil it looks. Who knows, maybe even push that farther?

@Master Troglodyte

The composition right now leaves no room for the snowmancer. She (he?) is utterly lost and the central positioning of the golem completed steals focus. Also the pose is really unreadable. It wasn't until after a good couple minutes of looking that I realized the figure was facing us. The golem is really well done though, I love it!

@Urotskidoji

Definitely liking the feeling of movement in the piece. I can't wait to see what manner of creature will be brought to life to round it out!

This is awesome! Keep it up guys! I'll have an update soon as well.

What a fookin awesome topic!

macimovic: Very cute I like it. I was thinking of doing a giant snow walrus breaking out of the pack ice but I wonder if that would look better for yours

steve pete: Early days so hard to crit at the mo, but I really like the pose

Urötskidoji: Dynamic as fuuuuuuck!

MasterTroglodyte: Sweet. I know it's early days but I think you're gunna have to find a way to make her more of the focus

evil-santa: Loving the pixie. Carful with the snowman though I've seen something very similar on CA before, but I can't think where

exdakly: The creature is looking very dynamic especially as you're veiwing him from such a low angle. You should try to do the same with your character, see if you can hunt down some ref to help you out

PxelSlayer: Gutted, I'm feeling your pain buddy

LibertineM: I reckon a more dramatic angle would also help you out

Jees I think that's all the crit I can handle right now. Well here's my effort so far, just trying to get something down. Would love to finnish this one. Any crits are more than welcome

@GEB

Love that monster! The snowmancer's pose seems a little stiff but MAN, LOVE THAT MONSTER! Can't wait to see what it ends up being!

My effort. Getting into some shading. Now happy with the dragon yet but I'm working on it. Will definitely add more detail to the snowmancer as well to make him look more Inuit. Still a long ways off on this one but really enjoying the ride. :)

Now off to work!

very nice brush handlings on many of the works, esp. MrPetkovic!

my figure is more like a standard necromancer, who digs out ingredients from the ice and mixes them to make a smooth, well-functioning sidekick.

MatejaPetkovic> Stunning piece! The traditional feeling gives a lot of personality and radiates a lot of sensitivity.
Maybe you could push colors to fit with something colder, link a bit more the character to the ice element and some details that will make him an obvious snowmancer.

LibertineM: I reckon a more dramatic angle would also help you out

Thank you for the crit GEB! Yea, I think you are very right. Perhaps a lower angle looking up with the child sitting in front of the laying down moose, much more close up and intimate. I'll start scribbling when I get home tonight, silly 9-5.

‘The imps all took to creation wonderfully, took life with a natural character they already knew, as if they had already met themselves and decided whom they were. Some shivered in the winter air clutching onto the cave opening hoping it were their mother’s womb, silent, listening to the scratches of echo’s from the funnelled wind, not confident to mingle with the others who took it all in their stride. Some became slaves before they knew it, their character wasn’t strong enough to stop them think and as soon as they were confronted by a twig, a stick, a snowflake or even the sky, they were trapped by their relationship with it and would treat each triviality as a deity. The bullish imps staggered with a charming yet ridiculous stride, an inflated chest and confident manner because they know no other, being as physical with their surrounding as dirty ice would allow. The snowmancer, with all frozen fingers knew nothing of how to care for the imps he dreamt up, merely that he knew them well.’

Well, decided to give this a go, though whether anything gets finished is another matter...

Anyway, decided to go with bit more modern route and with the fact that most stuff made from snow looks kinda crappy (unless you have at least some sculpting chops) so it would be understandable if the conjured beast would come from the snowmancer's imagination, it would look kinda humorously crappy and unfinished too.

I wasn't really comfortable with my previous sketch (evryone doing kickass sorcerers, and I...? Doing penguins xD), so I dropped it and started scribbling. After a late-night sketching session, I finally came up with a concept I think I like:
1185722
The blind witch of the tribe, that uses a giant owl golem as her eyes. She lives apart from the other people, and can only be found when the Northern Lights appear.

Some very rough and early sketches... I was just trying to find something that I liked:

Partisan, really liking where you're taking it. Throw in some cool ambient cold lights from underneat to really up the mood!

Mateja, been following your progress. Really good work so far, just how urötski described it.. a scary flower.. fear and beauty.

AlyFell, hat off sir! been following your ladies with pleasure since I got into digital art.

Fetsch, good to see you!

Kongkostas, gonna be cool to see where you'll take it.

Urötskidoji, glad you went for the top right thumb. Good stuff so far! watch the proportions of the arms, the one to our right seems to big given the perspective. With a second look, it seems like it's more about the upper arms on both arms. The entire upper arm seems too long, as if it had an extra joint.

Snowmancer.. makes me think of the necromancer from Diablo2. Didn't want to go dark side this time though :P Here's a sketch of mine.

@MatejaPetkovic - Love the theme you've injected into ths one. The frosty ethereal effect you've used on the snowmancer's creation is very nice.

@Sakuranym = Looking forward to see where the colours take you on this one. A nice sketch and concept.

@GEB - Oddly enough, I am getting a Dune vibe from your image. It must be the giant head breaking the surface of the snow. It's looking great so far.

@TinyBird - I like your concept. It should generate some great illustrations ;)

@Prepsage - Giant snow crabs! Let's be friends!

@Urötskidoji - Loving the mish-mash of cultural influence on your snowmancer and looking forward to what comes next.

@SaraCuervo - There is a nice eerieness to your image thus far. I think you'll be on the right track if you hold onto that :)

@DefiledVisions - Love the movement in your composition and the character design so far.

@MJ Alcazar - Are you working a snowmancer necromancer motif here? I like the direction you are working in.

Homerid – Great scene, drama and action, this must be finished.
Parasakoria – looking good, I like the balance between the blue and splashes of red.
Kingkostas – please finish this, I really like the way it kinda looks like a 3d image, which suits your description. I am really intrigued to see this finished. The texture you have used in the snowmancer, which looks almost astral, tells us all about the wizardry of the snowmancer.
Urotskidoji – That lady is definitely gonna kick my ass! Nice warrior fashion and pose.
Prepsage – i can’t wait to see the snow crab. Very dynamic pose and framing. Character looks focused and fits in with environment, which is set to be a beast in itself. Looking forward to seeing more.
PxelSlayer – Very elegant and easy on the eye although, not sure how this will be developed. You render much better than myself, but I would be cautious of getting caught in mid tone greys. Show me I know nothing, and post the follow up!
GEB – ROAR!
Partisan – Holly shit! Looks epic, from a film with a huge budget, this is cinematic bliss. Even though this is a full body shot, this feels like a close up within a massive cave. Excited to see more.
Sakuranym – I just realised that was a giant snake. Im sure it will be wonderful. You have a great rendering style and once again depicted an intriguing character/mood.
MatejaPetkovic – last week I was impressed with your production methods/speed, and surprised that it was ok’d by CHOW. I really like this weeks, great style again. Slightly mad and embittered from the harsh environment and solitude.
Kloakatriposa – PAGAN! Your snowmancer is fantastic! I am totally sold on the idea your snowmancer is a nomadic wizard of sorts, challenging the gods and plagued by his own creations. Please post more.
Macimovic - I like simple composition, I think it works well between the two characters. The ice blue ‘could/should’, be turned down alot, or maybe use a unifying overlay colour in new layer? I look forward to seeing more.
Goog – I like the feel of this image, looks like the snowmancer is returning home and not about to gave exp points in a final fantasy fight. This underplayed approach, I think, tells us more about the character of the individual.
Fetsch – Sweet. I can’t say much more than that. It’s on key to turn out fantastic, great rendering and style.
Jrbarker – Iconic stance going well. The legs/feet of the snowmancer look like they conflict with the rest of the figures propositions. I think the lighter background makes the characters expression more dramatic. Good monster, I can already tell the density of snow and weight of the structure.
EvilSanta – yeah that’s an evil santa! Halloween/Christmas cool stuff, I think the blue and green combination is confusing my focus at the moment, same tonal range.
LibertineM – charming, really nice approach. I think the understated nature actually makes yours stand out. I am looking forward to seeing progress pics.
OfficialLamp – cool rendering on the Inuit. I don’t know why, but maybe go somewhere tiki with your snow monster, I know it’s not in the right culture or geography but the block like monster you have will fit into that style.
Artfix – Great rendering, the snowmancers look great. He is clearly not doing his sunday shopping, so Im looking forward to this developing/playing out the scene.

MasterTroglodyte: I think that's working much better, though her feet are bothering me. She looks a bit off ballance to me. Is she on a ledge a fair distance in infront and above the monster? If so a bit of light catching the edge may help seperate them.

Revidescent: Hey welcome to CHOW! You know I think you could make a much more powerful image withy a classic crucifixion pose. Not to mention make life a shit load easier ;)

TinyBird: I really like the second one looks liek they're taking shelter under the big one

dawnusllaw: She's looking pretty strong. like the pose. I think you could make more of the hulking snow beast I like the idea of it being very protective of its master

Wow, you've branded a paint over. Personally I like the original more. I think its understated which requires the viewer to 'watch' more intently and use their own mind to create the fantasy within the image.

I know every thing should look like a computer game (yawn), but he's making something out of pieces of snow/debris/mud/ice/dust, not fairy lights.

It's a suggestion, he is free to do whatever he wants.

Talking about understated elements, I was thinking that some hints were missing in order to link this character to ice element. As I said, it's a suggestion and a picture is still better than words.

Btw having a traditional feeling doesn't mean you can't mix up both aspects. It's a personal taste.

MatejaPetkovic: Loving the atmosphere, loved your piece for the last round too-I do think it need more of a focus point, but I'm sure you've got that under control ;)

Urötskidoji: Great dynamic pose!

DefiledVisions: Really nice, though maybe you could extend the canvas vertically a little, I just feel like compositionally it's not quite balanced right now, and with such a strong pose I'd love to see the character in the centre of the page.

@kloakatriposa - Awesome concept, I specially like the guy's expression. Though the sky is a bit void, don't you think...? Maybe some clouds, mist or snow... Nothing too elaborated, just to fill in a bit.
@Mateja - Even when Akefay did a cool paint-over, I still prefer the original one. It's more subtle, more dark and mature. And the ice creature is really gorgeous as it is. Though I think a bit more of lighting would come in handy... But just a bit!
@Buffichar - That's pretty cool! But isn't the posture of the extended arm somewhat forced? Maybe looking at some references will help you, it's a difficult pose...

---
After tweaking endlessly that goddammned sketch (and hitting my head once or twice against the wall), I finally think I'm going the right way... At least I hope so!

About M:
I agree, for the most part. The snow elements are rather understated. At the moment the design looks more like a necromancer than a snowmancer, because the ghostly body is much more noticeable than the snow particles it is made up of. Perhaps adding another skull on top was not the best way to enhance the "snow" aspect, but the added lights DO enhance the dynamism and ethereal quality of the scene. The added blue color also helps to show the "frozen" aspect of a snowmancer.
Within the original drawing I feel as though there should be some snow drifts in the front that are forming into the ghostly figure. That or some other more obvious way to show that the figure is being made out of snow and not a light colored dust.

@kloakatriposa - Love the crazy bright colours you're using; nice change from all the blues going around. Not too sure about the ice creatures themselves, though - they don't look particularly icy or translucent, so they're reading more as stone than anything.

@daveneale - Oh my god, I love it. Nothing constructive to say. Just... love it.

@SaraCuervo - I think you're going the right way indeed! You might want to watch those feet. They almost look like the back foot's toe and the forward foot's heel are trying to occupy the same space. You might want to move it back more? Also, the front foot's toe is uncomfortably close to the picture's border - a tiny bit more space would help it out.

Hi all

M: thats looking fantastic, love the lighting.

I managed to get some scribbles down on the train last night and this morning. Not sure if I'll get any further than last week but I'm going to keep on trying.

Still got a lot of work to do on the creature and I need to get her hands correct, she's holding snowballs which will be glowing.

Apologies for not doing any crits at the moment, but I need to get some work done, the paying kind, not the challenge kind.

Thanks

Guys, goddamn. So much awesome stuff.

scatch: There's a really nice feeling to your image.

Aly Fell: Love the design of your monster.

kingkostas: Nice textures.

macimovic: Cool monster and nice composition.

cz64: The severed heads are a nice touch.

UCT: Very creative approach. Looks awesome.

PxelSlayer: That's badass.

TinyBird: I love the way your creature looks so alive but obviously made out of snow at the same time. Genius! I like the version where the big snow creature is standing over the snowmancer.

DefiledVisions: Very dynamic, and I love narwhals.

MJ_Alcazar: Awesome monster! And I really like the Russian/Slavic influences(?) in the character design. Now this might just be me, but there's something almost slightly feminine about the dude's stance. Maybe some heavier/thicker lines would sort that out?

hilding: That's a great composition idea, and your character is very expressive.

daveneale: That's just awesome.

OK, here's mine. Clean(er) lines and basic colour. Snow beasties coming soon!

Crumbelievable, try using a raindrop type brush, something with multiple small dots, or something like a grunge brush.

Make a new layer and set opacity low to get the feel of it, set the spacing high, try using scattering with pen pressure, as well as size jitter. Hopefully those couple of tips will help you render the snow better. Also you can use a soft brush on low opacity to blend it some.

@Kloakatriposa

I like the compsition of the piece but I am not getting much of a "snow" vibe from it. I mean, they guy's clothing is red, the ground is mostly green, and so are his minions. Maybe a little color palette tweaking would go a long way with this piece.

@Urotskridoji

Go with the worm. It feels more epic and the perspective looks much more natural than with that horse... thing.

As for me I am hating this thing more and more and more and more. Blarg. Hate. The color palette is garbage, I don't know what to do about the background and the wolf snowmancer looks weird. Also, I still haven't heard for sure if its alright for the character to be something not 100% human.

Reaper,

I'd go looking for some photos online, find some shots of blowing snow, or ice, copy the jpg and open it so that you can eyedropper the colors to use on your drawing. That will help you to keep a much better mixture of color, so you're not having to try and mix colors that are very different from one another. Also, try to use an overlay layer to drop blue at a low opacity onto your dragon, also a hard light with white at low opacity can be very powerful if used sparingly. Use a soft edge brush and layer it on, it should help make your dragon glow.

About M:
The added blue color also helps to show the "frozen" aspect of a snowmancer .

I dont agree. Using a vibrant blue, within his existing colour scheme (which would clash and make the flow of the piece awkward if used to 'highlight the magic'), would only demonstrate that he has employed a symbolic colour. Blue is typically registered as 'expansive cold' (sky, ocean etc), not snow, so using blue would not only be lazy, but add further confusion when reading the 'shiny lights' in the image.

About M:That or some other more obvious way to show that the figure is being made out of snow and not a light colored dust.

Why does it need to be obvious? To suit the brief? I think not, isn't being obvious taking the fun out of reading the image in the first place. A picture can say a thousand words, but lets not rush to turn images into manuals, let the reader enjoy the process of understanding and interpriting the image on their level.

I agree that everything should look like a computer game (thats where were all heading right, some form of interchangeable entertainment), but I think thats because people are now comsumers and recessive. Using obvious tricks when not suitable (which is highly subjective) doesn't demonstrate anything other than the artists ability and his/her inclination to show off.

@Afekey & Phrix : I understand we are presenting two different attitudes of what the viewer expects and how they interact with visuals: and I think you are right to give the crits you have, they do fall inline with the expectations of concept art (slightly boastful and in your face). I think maybe M should take your advice and develop a more obvious style, after all we are all here to learn and become better at being concept artists, I do not mean to deconstruct M's work away from being a success or readable to the popular eye.

I did mean however to deconstruct why I liked his image in the first place, for its grim atmosphere and (what I perceive to be) its unique approach to demonstrate the characters story and his contest there in. I think M's work is subtle and respectful of the viewer, he doesn't patronise the viewer by using obvious symbols, I dont think he is racing towards making an obvious World of War Craft type character with thrilly flashy bits jumping at us like fireworks for us to just stair at mindlessly, ahhh, ohhhh, eeee. Im not against using bright blue, I like how its used in evilsanta's and maciamovic's artworks, because it works within the characters and story they use.

I'm with UCT and the artist on this one: Adding a fantasy-esque magic blue glow to the 'snowmancing' only enlarges the feel of the character being a mage or necromancer and makes the image a lot more generic and less tantalizing or prone to interpretation.
Furthermore, while blue is indeed a cold colour it doesn't exactly scream ice or snow when used as a magic effect as per the case of said paintover.

@GEB : wow that's a very nice piece, the snow creature is awesome, as is the environment, the cliff is sweet, even without further touches they look very ready and solid, the main crit would be the creature looks like its battling your snowmancer (or maybe it's me) and your snowmancer is not as interesting or eyecatching as the snow creature, once again, very nice!

my sketch :
the lack of upperclothing might work against the idea of cold environment, but i enjoy sketching the torso, need more developments to fit into the snowmancer topic, crits and some ideas will be great :teeth:

M Love the update.

dreadreaper I'm glad you're exploring different colors and stuff. I highly recommend getting some reference for everything, especially your wolf char. I know he's not 100% wolf, but some reference of wolves howling will help a lot.

GEB I can tell the char and creature are on the same team since the char is obviously not worried bout it. IMO, you should redo the char in a better pose. Being straight on and looking at the viewer is boring. His cape is looking a lot like a bushy tail. I like this image a lot tho.

artina Looking good here. His hair looks likes its combed perfectly and that is distracting me lol. he has tattered clothes, and his hair should be more messy. his outstretched arm looks like an elephant trunk. I know its covered in that thick leather, but I'd like to see more form of the arm. Try darkening the sweeping arc of snow from the owl just a bit...I think its a great design but its not very noticeable.

blackrobin I love this pose leaning on his bear buddy. The guy is looking pretty short which is fine but you can shrink his head a bit to make him more heroic looking. BTW my guy has skin showing too; I made his skin blue and I figure his people live in the snow and they're adapted for it. So I think your idea is fine. My only concern here is that you can't tell the character is 'mancing' the bear? However, since all this work should be for portfolios, I would never let the brief control your creativity.

Update. Not sure if it's getting too muddy, or if my eyes are tired from looking at the screen to long, sooo time to take a break! Some really awesome stuff on here, loving all the different takes.

GEB- I'm really liking your character. Maybe have the wind pick up a little, get that cape to come up off his back so we can see it? Liking the creature too.

daveneale - loving your style.

Sorry for the lack of crits, I'll try to get some in later. Thanks so much for those who have commented on mine!

this is an amazing work M. Makes me go back to it just to look at it more. However, if i were to suggest something it would definitely be the focal points of your piece. The soul seems to be the most important part of the painting. It completely grabs all the attention all the time. The character, which should be the most important in this case, does not stand out anymore and looks really dull. I think if you were to lighten up his face a little to bring that brilliant expression you got going, it would make the piece a lot more interesting and balanced. What i mean is that you can still keep your soul as the mian focal point - its your artistic choice and there is nothing wrong. But it seems that it's grabbing a little too much attention from the beautifully designed character.

Sure man i will post them in my sb

WOW There's so much great stuff going on in here! I wanted to comment on everyone's but I just don't have the time right now- there's so much awesomeness it's overwhelming!
MatejaPetkovic- this one is my absolute favorite!! So moody and beautiful- it's such an inspiration!
Some other favs are Partisan, GEB, daveneale, Parsakoira- the list goes on and on though!

Here's two rough wip shots of mine. I'm almost afraid to show them, after seeing all the amazing things everyone else is doing :bashful:

Sooo maaaanyyyyy poooosts! Jeez, I thought I´d give some crits to you at the present page atleast:

Naneel - Nice composition and a good start for a palette too! Welcome to CHOW! (Can I say that?)

gloombunny - Pay attention to the left arm(from viewers pespective), the shortaging looks a bit
strange. Im having problems with that too, and try to get the left hand a bit more siluette.
Other than that its a nice start, keep up the work!

Schnookiefoo - Now that´s an original take on the whole theme. I like the style!

Ruri - You also got a very original style! It´s fun to see people interpreting the themes
diferently. Big plus for the cute snow-creatures! :)

GEB - I looove your background, really nice done! The monster also gets better and better,
your final is gonna rock.

MJ_Alcazar - Cool colors and mood, reminds me of that russian guy Rasputin somehow.

f o x - I really like your snowbird, is that an owl? It feels like a cover for a comic book,
great work!

Artfix - Really cool work! Although his arms feels too small to fit his torso, of you just
enlarge them a bit it would look better.

And here is mine, didnt do much at all today, probably gonna give it more time in the weekend. Just splashed some basic paint on it, not sure where to go with it.

@emerging, thanks for critique, and i think you are right, as we speak i am working on head, so will make it pop up
@artfix, loved it more in b/w
@GEB, i know i said that main focus should be character, since this is chow, but i think you shouldn't crop image, now composition doesn't make sense
@daveneale, beautiful work man, love that monster, so fucking cute, you definitely have my vote
@Partisan, speed up man, i want to see it done!! :)

Overall excellent works, and i miss something by Jessy

Hah just started on this one...thought of an idea of some evil wizard walking toward the foreground while his summon rose in the back but I don't think I'm expressing it quite clearly enough, heh. Need to add something to the foreground including the character....he needs some chest armor and cleaning!

Artfix - I think his cloak could use some texture / shadows, apart from that looking great, especially the lighting and ice.

I changed my composition a little to be more expansive and get in a proper creature, will need make sure the emphasis is on the man though... Have a few ideas to try out tomorrow as he looks weak at the moment. Keep running out of time, do we really need sleep!?!

Yes, I do know that the piece has been updated, but...

First off, I did not tell him to keep the shiny lights. I only meant that the enhanced contrast helped to make the scene look my dynamic. Secondly, you are putting the color blue into meanings that fit your own purpose. Blue can be read many different ways. In this case, I was referring to how skin can loose color and turn a blue shade when cold. Also blue IS in ice as you can see from the below links:
http://www.alaska-in-pictures.com/data/media/16/natural-sculpture-frozen-lake._1173.jpg
http://www.hoax-slayer.com/images/frozen-wave-large1.jpg
Perhaps a vibrant blue would be too much, but as there is blue in his original drawing, it is not like he was adding something completely foreign.

Why does it need to be obvious? To suit the brief? I think not, isn't being obvious taking the fun out of reading the image in the first place. A picture can say a thousand words, but lets not rush to turn images into manuals, let the reader enjoy the process of understanding and interpriting the image on their level.

Third, what would be the problem with using symbolic imagery to enhance the understanding of the work? Art has been done this way since the most ancient of times. Hieroglyphs, votive statues, illuminated manuscripts, etc. And while subtly does make for an interesting piece, I am arguing that he is being too subtle. It is one thing to insult the viewer by making it outrageously obvious, and quite another to expect the viewer to understand the piece with so little information incorporated. Call me an idiot, or whatever it is that you feel like saying, but without the prompt I would have had no idea that his character was a snowmancer. All of the images, symbols, and colors that were actually incorporated indicated that this was a necromancer. And while it is a lovely piece, those symbols did not have it following the prompt. (This is not to say that I am judging if it should be allowed entry into the finals. That is, of course, up to the judges.)

Again, you are putting words into my mouth. I never said that it needed to look like a computer game or anything of the sort. And who is the judge of when things are suitable and not suitable to be used? In a contest about ideas, making sure that your audience understands your thoughts is important, yes? We are just saying that his full concept is not coming through as clearly as we think it should be.

I understand that you have an opinion, UCT, but I dislike how you put others down to make your point. There are many different ways that people have to speak and communicate ideas. For Afekey, he has an easier time getting his point across by doing a paint over. Yes, M chose the more subtle, textured route, and yes, Afekey took away from that in his paint over. But was is necessary to attack the way he draws and his opinion on the matter? As I said, I do understand that everybody has an opinion, but there are ways of being polite about it that still get your point across.

Great start. I like the way the ice contrasts the water. Why not let them cast shadows on the creature. Perhaps introduce some green tones on the creature. Looking forward to see more of the canoer.

Everyone, I tip my hat to you. This is beautiful work all around and I am completely envious of it.

As for me, I throw in the towel. I hate this piece more and more and it has major issues that can't be fixed without scrapping it and starting over. I did what I could with it but now I bow out. Here's as far as I got. To save on my embarrassment I won't be entering in the finals but I enjoyed it while it lasted.

Thanks CA for all your help! I can't wait until next week! :yayca:

It's really inspiring seeing how everybody's doing ice, which is freaking hard to paint. Especially impressed by JanJager.

@Artfix - You've got so many great jagged, sharp shapes that your figure's looking a bit too soft in comparison, almost like they're two different styles. Maybe if you did something to make the shading on him just a little sharper - perhaps more painterly than airbrushed?

@jrbarker - I'm loving that dramatic lighting.

@fdisk - That costume design is fab, but her pose seems sort of unbalanced - as though she's about to topple backwards. I think it's the way that leg is bent, combined with not seeing what the other leg is doing. It sort of makes it look like she's leaning back?

Starting in on my creature's details. Hopefully the fact that the snowmancer's right in the centre of it doesn't take it too far off the brief... and I'm hoping I can get him surrounded by snow without entirely covering up the design and thus completely defeating the purpose of a character challenge. Just kinda trundling along on this one. Trying to find a way to make the dogs look more snow-y and less like puffy white things. Tried making it look like layers of snow pressed together and moving... not sure on the success there.

This is one heck of a week.

WIP2: I can totally see I have a more realistic vision for this then other people. I finished rendering my snowmancer, and decided that my snow monster is going to resemble an inukshuk/inunnguaq (which I'm shocked no one else seems to be doing).

@ Phrix - How on earth did you get the impresion I was calling you an idiot, or anyone else here, I value critical discussion. If you have taken my explanation of another artists work as a personal insult, then I dont know how we can be objective. Why lecture, firstly, secondly, thridly? If you or anyone else has been offended by what I have written then I apologise, I simply developed the conversation to explain my view without being personal towards anyone or their work.

From reading your responce I think we can both agree to AGREE that their are different opinions about 'how and when' to ultilise obviousness to convey a concept.

I would be repeating myself if I responded to any greater length.
