ROUND #234 :: The Gods of Media and Technology
DESCRIPTION
The Gods of Media and Technology
In ancient cultures, there existed many gods who represented different aspects of everyday life: Apollo, god of music, Amaterasu, goddes of the sun, Osiris, god of death etc. What if this polytheistic system of gods and guardians still existed today? What would these modern gods look like?
Design a god/guardian of modern media and/or technology.
Examples:
Goddess of mobile phoning
Guardian of internet
Goddess of videogames
God of magazines
Guardian of television etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media
Can be male or female
The setting is modern time, style can be anything!
Pick a modern technology and let this inspire your design
Give him/her appropriate attributes (like Zeus, god of thunder, usually carries a thunderbolt).
Good luck!
PLEASE NOTE THE RULES AND THE DEADLINE TIME

The god of News Media, formerly the god of Marketing. A.K.A. Chad, or Thad, or Brad, or some other name like that.
Was at one time the god of Marketing, until he managed to kill the god of News Media using slick advertising and tabloids about celebrity babies. The end result, he's the god of both, but the whole truth angle of the old gods is lost to the entertainment value of marketing.

I'll probably do something along these lines:
God/Goddess of Design (which can branch into many areas of individual programs, i.e Illustrator, Fireworks, Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc) - Adobe (can be like a builder looking character like a tradesmen).
God of modern devices - Apple products, pioneer in stylish design of modern devices. Could be some guy who sits in a room developing ideas for the latest devices people can use.
God/Goddess of internet (kinda like Zeus but is the power source of all internet. Has fiber-optic hair or something wacky. Could imagine this looking quite techy.
Guardian of secret files(conspiracy files, data that the world leaders have on lockdown)
The Keeper, similar to the other idea but more focused on storing all the data we use via phones, emails, internet etc... could be some sort of human that works as a storage device.
I like the idea of storage... I think I need to do some sketches this evening after work!

haha well like I said I might try, although I doubt I could do it justice. It could be based on the actual person if they're indeed a pure sick individual at Photoshop! Personally I prefer the idea of data or keeping secret files protected or sumin!

I'm going with a god of print media, mainly newspapers. His symbol is the inky crow who spies on the world to obtain the truth for publication.

IMO, this topic is sweeter on the technology side, media is much more abstract and complex to conceptualize
the cookie cutter approach would be to personify a machine/technology or to machinize a god with added media/technology concepts
or you can brainstorm all the way and come up with something great too

I'm thinking of doing a Hindu-style goddess with each arm/head using a different cell one- the center one texting, the next two with cells to their ear, the back two on bluetooths/headsets.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a247/kurios/hindumultifacets.jpg
Then I tried narrowing it down to a Triple Goddess, one texting, one calling, and one with a head-set. Still trying to keep it relatively symmetrical.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a247/kurios/triplegoddess.jpg
My friend suggested I try combining it all in one body with multiple arms.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a247/kurios/onebody.jpg
Anyone suggestions as to which seems best would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm going with a Buddha of Digitalization, since I wanted to do one of those flying snippets pieces for some time now. ^^ Not sure about the black n white divided Buddha yet. Maybe I'll go with a dark background and then light snippets. The holes in the streams would then be 0 and the light snippets 1. Maybe I'll have some snippets and holes in the body of the Buddha too. Now would be a good time to be able to use 3D software I figure ...

I'm not sure if this is wandering off topic but it's something that'd be impossible without technology so, here she is, the goddess of space exploration. Rigel, or something. I was thinking, child-like curiosity, someone watching over those lost in the thirst for space information (hence the emblem of Laika the dog).. and a halo of atmospheric entry fire.

Initial concept design for a TV god/goddess. Its got six arms, cables for hair, and little camera minions that aren't in this version of the picture. I've been having trouble with my tablet so the colors are a bit blocky at the moment. I'm also having trouble with the foot. If someone could perhaps give some pointers on that I would be very grateful!
@Nuthien: I love your idea! I can't wait to see it!
@RicoD: By snippets do you mean digital patterns of light? Kind of like the glowing grid pattern in Tron? Because that would be awesome but harder to pull off if the Buddha was half lighter and half darker. However it would definitely emphasize that it is computer/technologically related, strengthening your illustrated concept! :D

-Okay, I thought of something, consider it my tribute to the free education the internetz provides. Er...little kid, balloons, thought bubbles, absorbing info. I just want to symbolize free, unrestrained knowledge and freedom from elitist schools of thought.
-Another idea is the Goddess queen of blogs, signifying ones right to express oneself and revolt...if someone hasn't thought of it already.
-Clicktivism, it works!
-As an essential tool for Révolution--- eg., during the Egyptian revolution.

Amazing that.
Update:
For all the corniness, I thought of a Goddess of Knowledge, Freedom of Knowledge and intellectual anarchy, anarchy not the fearsome type, but sort of like in the sci-fi classic The Dispossessed, freedom of thought and action. When I figure out what all that means I'll let you know. The lotus flower is to symbolize purity.

A goddess of electronic smoking apparatus (ecigs, epipes) and other synthetic stimulants. Trying to juxtapose old fashioned styles of clothing and methods of smoking (hence the hookah) with modern materials, hence all the shiny glowing stuff. I think that it is very modern, even futuristic, in a dystopian sort of way. Its like it is a rusted over, cyborg experiment that's been left in a forgotten laboratory. The contraption encompassing the head seems to me like a reference of how ensnared people are to modern media (sigh, sound, etc). And the way that she clutches at the tank above her reminds me of Atlas or Sisyphus and the large burdens that they carried. I wholeheartedly approve and can't wait to see it when it is finished! :D

Absolutely fascinating! To use the prompt of "modern invention" to mean the idea of intellectual anarchy as a comment on modern events is amazing! And beautiful!
The only suggestion I would make would be to add more elements that symbolize her nature, such as intelligence. The six arms, much like the god/goddess Shiva, help to symbolize anarchy, chaos, the ability to bring either good or evil in a balanced form (as I'm sure you knew). Palm leaves, for instance, represent victory and success. And in the western system of elements, Air represents intelligence and Fire, enthusiasm. (In the eastern system it is Wood that represents intelligence.) And I'm sure that there are many more, if you should chose to use them!
That aside, I can't wait to see it fleshed out a little more! :D

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas, Phrix. This is a darker more 3d version, with fire and depth and all. Not sure if I can pull it off. To remain true to the concept I'll two more arms receding into darkness. Only I hope the whole thing comes together as related to media and technology.

I like the darker version! Very dynamic!
And I definitely think that it is related to media because the concept of intellectual anarchy is a prime news topic on today's news. This also emphasizes the "modern" part of the prompt because it is a current moment in our world's history.
But perhaps, in a way to make the media/technology part more understandable in a single, illustrated design, lean more towards the "freedom of speech" aspect of it? I mean, in many of the revolutions that are now taking place require freedom of speech, or a means of large-scale communication for them to be successful. (Examples: the Egyptian revolution that you previously mentioned, and the not-quite Jasmine revolution in China...)
Oh and no problem! XD

Lovely rendering skills, very beautiful colors and lighting!
However, I am very confused with how you chose to personify this character. According to your previous posts she is the goddess of magazines, and yet the only (seemingly) magazine-related item is the actual magazine that she is holding in her hand and the (maybe) places designed for magazine covers to be hung on the wall. Without those items I would have no idea what item/s she ruled over.
One could argue that her design is sleek and bold, like a magazine layout, but since the prompt is media/technology, that design could fit any number of things. In fact, replace that red magazine with an i-pod and I could easily envision her as the poster girl for Macintosh interfaces!
Also, the dog. It has... no purpose. It is just an armrest with wings. Well, as I can tell anyways.
Over all the character; with her casually provocative pose, red outfit, and angelic companion, gives me a strong sense that you've combined this prompt with the previous one and created a modern-day Aphrodite. (Who is a goddess after all, so your character's holy demeanor is spot on!)
Anyways, keep on with the stunning work! Your painting skills are quite gorgeous!

Parabolic God?
A fast wip, what do you think? crits more than welcome!
Ok, so, excuse my ignorance but I had to look up the word "parabolic"... XD
And from what I can find it means either having a hidden meaning to being the motion found in a parabola. This leads to my question of, why is the meaning hidden? Aren't we supposed to know it? And to my statement of: if it does mean the curves/motions of the parabola, or a parabola in general, that discovery was made (according to my quick Google-search) in the 4th century BCE. So that's not exactly a modern technology...

Nice work guys!
Have got two ideas though I'm soooooooooo busy this week.
The first is Hermes as he is the messenger of the Gods he is God of information. As we became more and more obsessed with information the other previously all powerful Gods have diminished leaving Hermes as an Atlas like titan with the world in his grasp
The second is inspired by jeremygordon89 mentioning Apple earlier. The apple is the fruit of knowledge supplied by the serpent in the garden of Eden. Now I could either do a classic satanic figure or maybe do Jörmungandr type serpent from Norse mythology. Who circles the earth in his great coils. Hell maybe I could have Steve Jobs hanging upside down from a tree offering eve the apple...

here is my first WIP
mine will be "Chekomosh -the God of Technical Failure and Misusage" every time that someone invented something that later turned into shit in a biblical scale, like the nuclear fission that turned into the atom-bomb or the combustion-engine which is today the worst origin of air-pollution, he had his finger in the pie. Also if something fails like a plane that crashes or when your computer has a blue-screen or even when one decides to use a knife to kill another person its the work of Chekomosh. Every technology related pollution, every failure created through or by technology every invention that led to death or misery, every discovery that resulted in destruction or failure you can be sure that Chekomosh had his fun with.
He isnt a evil god as such he simply loves to play around with these cute little human minds and to pull the strings in their faith ...for him its more or less a game ...like a little boy who burns ants with a looking glass.

the god of chow. the great one that watches over the chow 'thread/s' as the battle ensues. he takes pleasure from all the juicy sap-ideas that the challengers excrete. although he's known as a neutral god and often let them do their things on their own.. -it is said that himself makes sure that chowerians (us) do their best job in creating and sharing the best chow art -he grant a great prize to those who can survive and gives certain consequences to those who couldn't. he's also (probably) both the guardian and the god worshiped by the queen of chow (*points at chow banner) and her people :)

Gaaah! I'll have to remember limiting my Comments-to-Everyone to 2-page topics or less =)
rgeorge - interesting idea. I like the multiple arms, with each one carrying/doing something different: very much like the many facets of knowledge on the internet: informative and current, yet potentially dangerous and prone to biases. Maybe even a little more chaos would work here, creating a true chaotic mistress of the huge amounts of unordered and unclassified data on the web.
tsad - lovely idea, and it's cool you thought about both god and "worshippers"; the communication between a god and his followers is a very defining attribute. The lines in your sketch seem nice, but it's still quite early to see what exactly is going on. I'll be interested to see how you convey his "CHOW"liness.
Hocco - great pose, and the elongated proportions make for a very unique character. I'm not sure how she is related to video games, though?
OfficialLamp - printed media: very cool. Most of us went to the technological side of media, but the printed word is definitely its roots. The inky raven is a great companion, very symbollic. Maybe it can even be made of ink or of words, shedding the occasional comma as he flies around. I think you should think about the pose: what is the hand not holding the raven doing? What is you god looking at? Also, what is the significance of the metal in his outfit?
fdisk - oh man, B'Sod is evil! A definitely crucial god in the pantheon of technological phenomena. The composition looks great, and the concept of the bird-flown whale is so fitting: you just feel something is bound to go wrong an minute. I'd work a little more on his arms, which don't fit exactly the styling of the rest of the character and the illustration (your god just reminded me to save this TXT file, btw =)).
RicoD - it feels both very virtual and very spiritual, well done. Right now the buddha looks like a traditional statue with those gridlines painted over him; I hope you'll make his whole form a bit more ethereal and virtual. Also, maybe the floating images should be more symbolic manifestations of music, video, books etc? What's he holding, btw?
suhsealyuh - the clothes seem to work for an iPod god, and I like the air-guitar. Maybe if the face was 100% frontal the pose would be more natural and into the music.
Partisan - I like your idea, and it could really be a scary, dark god. Unfortunately, currently it's so dark I can hardly see the image.
astillac - pretty cool! Like a modern goddess of plenty, aided by technology and progress. I think it's very important to show both sides in the character design: the food itself, and (somehow) the technology that separates her from just any ol' goddess of the earth.
Carnifex - very nice. Everything about him says "frickin' creepy". I can just imagine the awkward silence that falls in the gods' party hall when he enters. Maybe some stronger lighting coming from the scene he's shooting?
komugurakingdom - very airy and light, which is what you'd expect of a wi-fi goddess. I think it's a lovely idea, but you should really work on the design to make the "airy and transparent" attributes work while still making the character visible and attention-grabbing in the illustration.
Bleurgh - awesome and surprising design. The ancient look of his outfit and jewelry contrasts nicely with the crazy antenna growth. I think he deserves a more dynamic pose, maybe emphasize his walking through the field, since now it looks a bit more like he's standing.
Parasakoira - love the character design; the red dress and white hair just look great. What's the idea with the dog? Is he her monthly subscription courier?
Crumbelievable - great idea, and so far the character definitely looks like its slick, soulless embodiment. I think you should move the holograms somehow so they'll still surround him, but not hide his face. Is he himself connected to all the cables on the floor? That could be cool.
MasterTroglodyte - does your god personify any specific aspet of media or tecnnology? I think it gives the feel of old futuristic tech, you know? Like Jules Verne's ideas and inventions. Maybe it can be an old god of the first steps of progress.
vandalfish - I have no idea what ecigs or epipes are, but I really like the design. She looks modern and sophisticated, but also has a traditional feel, which sound like a good combo for electronic smoking. The colors look great, and I hope you upload a bigger version next.
Phrix - the cables and multiple arms are great ideas. The combination between modern elements and the traditional-looking clothes is also interesting. It's a shame she gets cut off like that on the right and at the top.
kiwigarbage - it's definitely pretty demonic, but that's not a bad thing for a god. It reminds me of Gaiman's Sandman for some reason. I'm not sure what you mean by "Commercial News Networks" - can you give an example?
Dayle - could make for a very cool illustration, but you'll definitely have to get the pose just right: it's a tough one! Also try to think about the character itself: other than size (and the tiny aeroplane), what makes her the goddess of flight?
hunchback - the blocking look very good so far, but obviously it's hard to know what's going on. Is she sort of floating above crowds using their phones? I like the idea, it's very symbollic of cell phone communication today.
Missile - goddess of space exploration...what a wonderful idea! I love her design, it's perfect. I can imagine her floating in outer space, occasionally passing by a shuttle window, revealing herself to astronauts when their oxygen is just about to run out...beautiful.
MJ Alcazar - nice! It's a cool design and great idea, having the goddess look more or less like the current masters of social networks: a young, hip chick =) There's something a bit awkward in the way she's sitting, I think?
Pixelturner - yup, that's the interwebz alright =) Great idea. I'm thinking maybe he can have some protrusions or lumps, where the internet's growing faster and stranger than he can control.
anabanana - the colors are definitely lovely, and I like the idea of a travelling goddess (weird that both you and fdisk chose the whale; am I missing something internet-y here?...) to personify Twitter and Twitter-like services. But if you don't use it, maybe you should pick an aspect of technology or media that you are more familiar with?
Villya - very cool idea, and I think you can take it ever further with the slightly crazy teenager concept. The cables coming out of the mouth are wicked...
noche - love the pose and composition, it looks like huge wings made of newspapers. I hope you continue.
gloombunny - oh, a duel between the god of classic writing and the god of electronic paper and texting would be epic...It's a good design so far, and I'd really like to see his antiquity spilling out of every punctuation mark.
kurios - actually I think three heads are a great idea. It really conveys multi-tasking, which has become almost a necessity in new media. You should probably do some quick sketches to come up with a good angle and compsition to show the three heads as best as possible.
ryanoir - I like it! The design looks very good so far, and I think the a Photoshop god could be even heavier and burdened with more "stuff". The colors here will have to be very striking.
kissorkill - he definitely spells "hipster" with a capital H, but is this really a media/tech realm? Though honestly, I just don't get the whole hipster meme, so maybe it's something I'm missing.
H4WK - GPS god is very cool. A modern answer to old gods of roads, navigation and confusion. I think you should really consider the attributes of GPS and try to convey them within your character: what does he wear, how does he look, is he even human, what tools or devices does he carry etc.
Here's a color sketch of Memetia.

I started playing with hair styles but I think it's way too many, even if I'm trying to go for multiple avatars.
I'm still trying to narrow it down to one figure with multiple arms or a Triple-goddess, maybe with the crone using an old style phone, the mother a blue-tooth, and the maiden texting.
For the middle figure, the undersketch was to make her look more Japanese, since Japanese schoolgirls use cell phones with cute charms, and I was considering making the final deity one. The darker lines show her with more goddess-like hair, with an influence of cell phone bars.

But each challenge helps you hone your skills, get better at thinking about a character, about an illustration, about a concept. Aaaaaand, here's more of my two cents. X3
astillac-Love this idea! Modern day technology at its (literally) smallest level! And from the sketches that you have provided, both compositions are gorgeous! Will the one on the right be holding a DNA strand? And if she is, prehaps have her dramatically manipulating or removing/adding nucleotide sequences? Just so that her role is a bit more obvious at first glance. :)
Partisan-Another fascinating idea! Turning the prompt of "modern technology and media" to be something like modern technological catastrophes that (usually) make it into the media! A clever twist indeed. The colors are wondrous, the reds giving it a great raw and dramatic light. Can't wait to see some more tones on this one!
suhsealyuh-The multiple ears are hilarious, and the floating light guitar is awesome looking! I do wish, though, that there were more dark areas (or areas of higher contrast) within the composition to help define the elements within your design.
fdisk-Couldn’t stop laughing with this one! Love the lower case “f” on his shirt. I think that it’s supposed to be for Facebook, but I keep reading it as meaning “fail” instead. His huge whale minion, who looks about to crash down on his next victim’s poor computer, keeps making me giggle as well. Great job!
OfficialLamp-The added words and typographic symbols on his torso are nice looking, well done! However, as the god of print, I feel as though he should be a bit more covered in words to really emphasize what he represents. The metallic elements you added are shaded and textured very nicely, but I am a bit confused as to what they are for. Are they parts for going through a printing press? And the bird. I remember you saying that it was his inky minion, finding news stories to be printed, but unless you had said that he was made out of ink, I wouldn’t have guessed. Perhaps make him dripping a bit? Like he is still a bit wet to the touch.
tsad-Oooooo, the god of CHoW! Nice to meet yah! *bows*
The movement in you initial sketch is stunning! I hope you keep some of it in your final design.
rgeorge-Love the added colors and reflective lighting. And the texture on her skin is simply gorgeous!
kurios- Beautiful under design! I am curious though, are you doing more than one goddess? Like a set of ethereal sisters? Or is she the same goddess in more than one form/avatar? Because right now it looks more like the former then the latter. Also, the generation idea is neat with the crone, mother, and maiden. That would help to emphasize that idea of rebirth into different forms of communication as well as being a clearer way to show that it is the same goddess in different avatars.
nAniA-Very cute! She definitely has that “I’ve watched too much TV but I just can’t stop” expression on her face. Can’t wait to see it when its done, although it looks nearly finished to me!

Hello,
I've relatively new to the community here. This is a concept for Chow 234! God of the Microwave!

Here's the start on mine (hopefully I can find time tomorrow to work on it). This is the Goddess of Photoshop. Unfortunately most of the things that are photoshoppy (especially the color scheme) aren't implemented quite yet. I just wanted to do a simple pose, but even that I'm struggling on right now. Can't figure out legs/stance for the life of me.

Here's my quick contribution. I don't know if I'll have time to finish her or not, but I had fun doodling my starting point. Goddess of Media / Technology --- I thought I'd have her listening to music, maybe surfing the web (maybe visibly throwing in some obvious social networking sites) on the ring around her (touch-screen style), etc. I'm not settled on anything yet, just scribbling and seeing what comes up.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I wish I could take the credit for the Fail Whale, but it's a well known meme designed by Yiying Lu (http://www.whatisfailwhale.info/)
Here's what I've got so far, clean lines + value test:

Looks like once more I'm going from "concept" to "illustration" but that's OK; I love CHOW because it gets rid of my artist block and makes me add really unique images to my portfolio!
I really appreciate your feedback Chate Noir and I'm LOVING your concept! I think you should work a little bit on the teddy bear to the left corner, he seems to be holding the bag instead of your Goddess.
Hang in there Phrix I highly doubt I will ever win a CHOW, but that's OK because that's not what this is about! It's about becoming better artists thanks to the feedback we receive from our fellow artists; it's also about being inspired by other people's work, and looking at their WIPs to pick up tips and tricks to improve your own art.
It doesn't matter how bad you think it is, post it anyway! The worst that can happen is that people will rip it apart and that's a good thing because only through criticism we improve our art. We all know what's good about our images, but it always takes someone else to point out what's wrong with them so we can keep it in mind for the future.

JeiWo -- I think your figure is actually REALLY solid right now. If you're wanting a more animated stance I'd say just part her feet more so that she commands more space, ergo, more ego. Or you could left the foremost leg a tad as though she's about to plant it. In that iteration the movement would then make her seem more otherworldly, aloof.
However, I believe that her current stance also seems to suggest a pace forward, and the facial expression is wistful, far-off, which can be powerful, but express a different form of deity.
These are suggestions, of course. I love the shapes you're using.

carnifex:: where did this come from ??? this is baller! just focus on the character flip the canvas for a few strokes and refer to your master inspiration and this will have the potential for a top 5 entry. really digging it.

Great topic this week. thought id give it a go!
Crumbelievable- looking great man! yeah i agree, perhaps make the effects on the face a little more subtle?? also it looks to me as though the ground plane needs to be tilted back a little bit for him to be standing on it, but this might just be because im looking at it with a 13inch laptop heh.
Prepsage-thats awesome!
Carnifex- nice character and posing! if your getting stuck on the rendering perhaps find an artist you like that you can try and mimic their final touches to help you get to the next stage. I would suggest looking at serge birault (http://sergebirault.blogspot.com/)
i think the major thing you need to look at is clearly defining how that pink light is hitting your character and then bring that green light in as another secondary hitting his back. looking great man.
Im being a little lame and going for a demon/God of viruses and corruption.
I want him to be an ever changing, ever evolving, demon whose body is constantly rearranging itself in a pixelated manner. not to mention malting little bits of evil corrupting viruses everywhere he goes.
I want him to mostly be in human form but occasionally may have an extra couple of heads or arms in such. perhaps one of his heads could be horse like representing a Trojan virus. does anyone have any ideas of viruses that can be visually represented??
here are some initial concepts for him. see how he evolves till the end..
crits and ideas most welcome.

tokotewhero::nothin lame about it. fun idea, maybe you can incorrporate some imagery that represents the names of the most prolific computer viruses, like worms, Trojans, and such.

Yes, that's totally what I wanted to do... I just can't figure out how to make it work and look... techy enough. :/

tokotewhero You have totally inspred me! I've gone back and totally changed my piece so thank you thank you so much ^_^ I've been toying with so many concepts and none of them have been sticking and now I know EXACTLY what to do.
My concept is Mali (from the Latin Malum meaning Misfortune), The goddess of Malware. She's a trickster god by nature. She acts like a digital siren, luring people in using promiscuous images and too-good-to-be-true offers and then installs her worms, Trojans and other malicious software without her victim knowing....
EDIT: Added my wip so far. I wanted a young, beautiful character and then surround her with 'demon-like' creations representing the different types of viruses. I'm also going to add tattoos across her body with things like "FREE", "WIN" "£" "$" "LUCKY"... can you guys think of any others to add?

Perhaps when she is manipulating the DNA strand you can incorporate some more technological imagery? Such as test tubes, beakers, computer/holographic displays, etc.

More cents into the coin jar! XD
kurios-Personally, I feel as though your first sketch in this bunch displays your character the best. It shows the multitude of communicative devices, and with the different expressions it also displays the numerous uses that those devices can be put. The last sketch in the bunch confuses me a bit. I understand turning the arms towards her body if she was the only head, but her expression is so serene, like she doesn’t even notice the other phones there. With multiple heads, it helps to give attention to each phone, making them all important. A god/goddess after all is omnipresent so, each phone should warrant her same attention. At least, to my way of thinking.
prepsage-I adore the octopus! (They are one of my favorite animals U>.>) But I also love it because it uses the sense of multiple arms without actually giving the female body multiple arms. And the headpiece is so ingenious with the three antennas incorporated into an awesome Hindu temple, making it both modern and traditional. Also, I’ve been waiting for someone to do an animal head/human body deity. So lovely!
Riley Stark-Interesting idea! Loving the funky, classic sci-fi vibes that I am getting from her garb. Will her skirt be a display screen for her web searches? For some reason I can see it as a touch screen console that spins! :o
Crumbelievable-All of the colors match up for me, except for the horns. They add a focal point of intense browns and oranges that don’t show up with such concentration anywhere else. But, are the horns really necessary? I get that he could be a mischievous god from his expression alone (that evil smirk!). Also, (and its not really that important since composition is a moot point compared to the character design itself), but if the screen in front of his face could be moved over to the left (our left), it would make the colorful graph-rectangles seem more apart of the glowing displays and allow us to see his face more clearly. Other than that I’m really digging this design! He kind of reminds me of a car salesman… or any other shady dealer. XD
rgeorge-Well, the two lower arms are a bit gray, perhaps give them some more intense darks? Even if it might not be how they would look if confronted with that level of brightness, all of the other arms have a great value contrast on them. The lack of it on the lowest two is probably what is making them undead looking. Also, the hair looks fine to me, I just think that there needs to me more of it! More strands and wisps would help so that it is not clinging together quite so tightly. It would also give the hair more volume and energy. I can’t say yay or nay for the brightness of the pink. It is apart of the character and the character is the focal point. It is up to you to decide how important it is to the over all character design and if it should be emphasized that much. But as I said before I love your concept and this design! I can’t wait to see when it is finished! :D
ryanoir-I like the design and I wish that you had rendered the face! It looks so textural and awesome! The only real critique I have right now, at this stage, is how it actually represents Photoshop. The paintbrush, the magnifying glass, the logo on his shirt make sense. But I’m not exactly sure what is in his belt right now, and the colors are a bit off to me. Isn’t Photoshop the blue icon? Also, I am curious about why you chose the more rustic look for this character. Most people would consider Photoshop to have a sleek design to its program.
tokotewhero-Just a quick critique for now, sense you said that these were temporary concepts. You say that he is usually in his human form, is that it in the background? If so, I wish I could see it more as right now it is a bit crowded by his demonic forms. Also, I love the idea of his constant state of chaotic change and disintegration. The figure on the left shows that quite nicely. However, the figure on the right gives me no sense of movement in his pose. If this is supposed to be a quick, violent transition, I feel as though the writing and movement in the demonic forms is a crucial aspect in portraying that. Anyways, love the idea! Can’t wait to see what you do next with this!

GEB thank you man ^^, the same to you !
changed the colours ...I like them more they better represent the "all mad, weird and creepy"-atmosphere this pic needs, I do have some trouble to really incorporate the idea of "disastrous technology fails" into this character so I think I am rather focusing on the chaotic part (thats why he looks that way) and the actual process of him twisting around with the ideas and minds like a puppeteer ...and his overall appearance as a rather evil looking guy should give the needed feeling that technical failure has to it
so long

Partisan:: really liking the new color splash! are you going to incorporate iconic elements to the piece regarding the subject. right now its scary as hell but its coming off as just a monster, a really well rendered nightmare. I see the shadow humans on the bottom feeding the nightmare and what looks like an atom about to be split by the split/crushed by the split hand.

Thanks.

Mmmm, how does it feel to rubberband (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=rubberbanding) in an MMO? Or have everything around you suddenly freeze in place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lag), only to find your character suddenly drop dead a few moments later? This is about as far as I can get for this one. I just can't figure out how to color properly using the greyscale method thing.
So which do you think I should submit, with or without color?

chate noire - great finish on your final, although i did enjoy her absent-minded look in the sketch more.
Thanks Carnifex. Yeah, I agree, something was lost in her expression...happens to me a lot while rendering. Meh, something to look out for next time.
And thanks to everyone who pointed out the badger "holding" the bag!
prepsage - gorgeous rendering and cool design, but it needs some more "media" or "technology" in it.
Elixy - she's adorable =) I really like her pose and your lines look great. Waiting to see those tentacles at work.
MJ Alcazar - I like her web-sleeves =) Even if you don't finish this, I have to say - I remember your work from a couple of years ago and you've really improved. Well done!
crossmirage - crazy design; reminds me a little of the Hollows in Bleach. But I wonder if it feels more like a creature than a character design?
Partisan - wonderful rendering so far. Your design looks very Lovecraftian, dark and scary. Maybe you can focus only on the misuse part, "putting ideas in the human mind" as you put it. It causes enough harm even without technical failure.
OfficialLamp - it's a nitpicky comment, but the stumps' perspective doesn't really work: the ones close to us should be seen a little from above as you drew them, but as they move away from the "camera" we shouldn't see so much of their top side.

I know that it is a bit late, but I decided on a whim to do something completely different from my first design. These are some progress shots from my goddess of the Red Carpet, who (for the moment) is unnamed. I tried to do the black and white underneath then color over lay, but I couldn't figure it out... so I went back to just using pure color shading... The last shot is how far I have gotten for the moment. Any comments are welcome, of course. :)

Redrew the hapless little player character guy so he's a bit more readable as such.

chate noire - i think i can easily be "fixed" though. in the sketch, she's looking a little more upwards and ever so slightly into two directions at once. so you'd just have to move the pupils.
official lamp - if you're working in photoshop, i can recommend putting a "colour balance" layer on top of everything and playing around with that. or duplicating the "colour" layer and setting the mode to "overlay" instead, then adjust visibility accordingly.
looks like there's gonna be one hell of a competition this week.

You're right. If I get home in time today I'll upload a fixed version. Thanks =)
