Hi, new to the board. Here is something I`m working on at the moment. It`s a large scale sculpt of film director David Lynch. It will be finished in silicone rubber with hand made eyes and hair. Here`s some pics. The sculpt was done in WED clay and the eyes were hand made in clear resin(size comparison of Lynch eye next to lifesiaze human eye)

Wow, that's big! Great stuff. Do you find it to be more difficult to sculpt in that scale or easier? Vancouver....what a great part of the country....congrats on opening your own studio.:chug:

Thanks for feedback guys. It`s definately harder to sculpt on a big scale. Purely because it takes more work to make changes in the sculpture. Plus, you have to keep stepping back from it so you can see how it looks from a distance.
Here`s one more pic of the sculpt.

In a chat on his site, I asked David Lynch about his reaction to the sculpt:
MortenTing [2:23 PM PST]: David, has anyone told you about that sculpture of your head?
DAVIDLYNCH [2:24 PM PST]: YES I SAW IT MORTEN
MortenTing [2:25 PM PST]: What did you think, David?
DAVIDLYNCH [2:26 PM PST]: MORTEN -- I THINK THE GUY - THE SCULPTOR IS REALLY GOOD

I`d like to say a BIG thank you to everyone for all the great feedback and support that`s been shown on this board. It`s been so helpful and very encouraging.
And, yes I did make the eyes. It`s the same technique as described in DICK SMITHS ADVANCED MAKEUP COURSE, just done on a bigger scale. It`s a really fiddley technique, involving several molds, thats taken me years to master.

If you weren't such a good sculptor you could look into a career in prosthetic eyes.

Does anyone have any good COLOUR photos of DAVID LYNCH or know a good resource? I have some but am always on the lookout for more. Just gathering as much good reference as I can before I start painting the silicone head.
Also, if anyone knows of any websites/resources that have good colour photos of human faces. (Most magazines tend to have models wearing makeup or they`re airbrushed to perfection, not much use to me). I need clear photos showing REAL NATURAL skin colouration. THANKS.

He looks like he has a fairly ruddy english complexion, rather cool tones, with the very pale pigmentation around the eyes... but I could be way off.
As far as reference for skintones, this site might have something good for you. I have had a couple people recommend it to me, but I don't have a membership.

Good luck. I can't wait to see the end product.

MT, I've been reading the tutorial by Smellybug, I think you should do one on acrylic eyes, I know its taken years to master but at least it gives us a guideline if we want to try it. I did acrylic teeth once and it STINKS! Is it the same stuff? Please think about it, and can you take layer by layer painting pics, this would runs well with smellybugs painting guide. Thanks for the effort I cant wait to see it finished!

i can't wait to see it with the eyes!
I tried searching for dick smith's book on amazon, but to no avail. is that the actual title? "DICK SMITHS ADVANCED MAKEUP COURSE" ?
I'm not asking for a tutorial, but could you at least give all of us little people a general idea of how those eyes are created? they are absolutely amazing.

You won`t find Dick smiths makeup course at Amazon or any other book store. It`s a correspondance makeup course and is only avaidable from THE MAN himself. It`s not cheap but is well worth it if your serious about a career in makeup FX.
I`m planning on writing a book on making eyes at some point, when I can! So, please be patient! I`m glad so many people like the eyes I`m making. Believe me when I say they are hard to make, they really are! And it`s one of those processes that is very unforgiving. It takes anywhere from 2-3 days to make one pair of eyes(sometimes longer) and it only takes one slip up at any of the many stages and it`s game over, start again!!! Plus the raw matarials aren`t that cheap.
Basically, I start off by painting a pre made Black Iris painting disc. This is bonded to a pre made clear cornea.
This is then placed into mold number one, which is designed to give the Limbus(the blurring between the iris and the white part of the eye).White acylic is poured into the mold.
Then I add veining and any other coloration to the white of the eye. Then I put the eye into mold number two. This is designed to give a final clear layer of acrylic over the eye.
Finally I sand and polish the eye.
I can give a basic tuturial sometime in the near future on a relatively simple(and less expensive) method of making eyes, if anyones interested.Deal?

Just out of interest, how many people would be interested in an in depth instructional guidebook on making professional quality eyes and teeth? This is something I have been considering writing for a while now, due to the interest people have shown. Appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Thanks
PS I`ll be posting that basics of eye making tutorial soon.

I can tell you that if there was a book like that, I would sit on the bench at borders and read through the whole thing. And if I had money, I'd buy it. So I bet that means other people would too.
you could post that eye tutorial on this board, and then gauge the reaction! :)
