haha, I'm not usually one for fanart, but I made an exception this time. More of a technique study than anything else. 2 hrs Photoshop7....

Vey nice ! I like it a lot, nice colors and I like that you have painted it with rather big brushes, it gives such a better effect than nitpicking with thin lines and minor details.

I'm not that familiar with hellboy, so I dont know if his big arm is supposed to be longer than the other arm. Other than that I think it's excellent.

oh crap...
Probably the best topic ever. I immediatly thought about Hellboy and was wondering if... :D
So what technique was it that you studied and will you finish this further or are you content with it ?
I like the warm colours over hellboy. Maybe if the cyber gorila had been a little more in cold shadows .. ?
Ps: Sorry for using "cyber" the most overated buzz word ever.

:jawdrop: Yo Sean! You have REALLY come a long way! Your painting technique has gotten really good, and I'm sure this isn't even your top notch stuff! I'm a bit shakened wondering how well all that work you've been hiding from us at your job is going to be when you post your big post.

Small crit: you've done such a great job with the colors, i.e. there's a real continuity between the oranges of his skin, the colors of his jacket, etc., but the blue of the gun is not really connecting to the other colors in the piece, for me. It may just be a question of warming up the speculars and /or lighter areas of the gun. I mean, I believe it should still read as "blue", but relative to the rest of the colors in the piece it doesn't need to be that blue all over to do so.

hey thanks for the feedback everyone! Yeah you're totally right Chris B, I should have warmed up the gun's color a bit more. Its not so much blue as it is non-chromatic which ends up looking blue next to all those reds and stuff. Or maybe it would have worked better with Egerie's cool shadows suggestion.
About the technique, I was trying out a technique where I totally resolve the painting color and cmpostion-wise on a small scale and then blow it up for the more detailed type stuff. That and I was trying to see how loose I could be and still end up with a readable image. That and I'm also a sucker for visible brush-strokes. And lazy.
The Gorilla is the KriegAffe from teh "Conquerer Worm" book (which I've heard may be the next movie if this one does well, whoo hoo!). After watching the mocie I realized thaqt Hellboy doesn't have that pteradactyl-type "thingy" on the end of his tail, and I'm probably way off-model ont eh war monkey, cause I did everything from memory...
I'm glad you guys liked the piece, I'll definitely post some more finished-looking concept stuff within the next couple days. No more fan art, I swear!
thanks

Makes sense. BTW, that's exactly how I work (I make a small color rough, with the whole piece chopped up into a few color areas, then blow it up and paint).
That thing about the gun appearing blue when it's really gray (desaturated) is, as I'm sure you know, a very powerful force in painting. I like exploiting that. For example, if you made the gun actually a warm/orange "gray" (I mean warm/orange in terms of hue only), but still much less saturated than the other oranges in the piece, as you know, it would look "blue." So you'd have an orange in there that was reading as blue. I know you know this... I'm just saying I think that stuff is cool. I think when a color is being two things at once, somehow it activates more of your brain, or something. The colors start to sing, or vibrate. You know what I mean?
Anyway, nice piece of work.
