Nice colors [b]Blackhawk[b]! That's the more painterly feel I'd like to achieve (and less literal than my stuff btw :P). Do you still use 'Oil Pastel' in Painter ?

22December... on a day like this. in 1989 we've got rid of the comunists... :evilbat: FUCK EM! i love to be free... and able to know you guys.
Now.. the comments i've prommised.
@ilex - bad girl - where's your reply? nice sp!
@fab - bad boy - where your sp? :D I love your last one - maybe too much contrast on your hair.. but otherwise.. it looks so clean i envy you! take care on those dark accents.. they are a bit strong i think.
@Blackhawk - bad boy - where your sp? your last - a good eye, a bad eye.. some nice colors some.. i don't like too much. I love the part under your left eye (my right) - there's a smell of green around there. Lovely. How are you lately?
@Groovie - hey.. what a change... keep it up.
Oh i've forgot - : bad boy - where your sp?
@Mia - bad girl - where sp? :D lovely colors but you still have some problems with your proportions. I know that measureing sucks but.. it's such a must - your eyes seem too big, and the jaw a bit large... measure.. here.. size does matter :p
[edit] - Ha.. LIONEL .. you've posted while i was typing... GOOOD BOY. You're getting at it. Try more hatch, thinner, or a cleaner version.

Oblio damn you're absolutely right about the contrast of the hair, I didnt really notice it, it probably has removed a lot of the realistic effect of the whole piece. As for the cleanliness I'm not sure it's a plus, it was good practice though, I just got carried away with it. I think what I tried and failed, in fact is to put in just the minimum amount of crispness to give the eye something to grasp, because if I blend everything even with the edges clean, it feels muddy. If I render everything clean I suppose it is not bad, but there is a lot of it that doesnt really add something... anyways.. lots to explore in future sp's
thx for kicking our butt btw, I'll try to post one tonight :)
Lionel you're really improving with your paintings, it's much more solid also since you put the neck & bust and ditched that white bacground and 'floating' head. I would just watch that gray you use in the white of the eye and the teeth, as you did on a previous sp as well, those are probably not so desaturated, they are probably beige, or slightly redish around the corner of the eye etc.. also watch the black in eyebrows and hair, good job! And yeah, TV is evil, I dont have one at home, but then I have the same problem with damned internet :)
ilex that is a nice sp btw, nice feathers

benzo good one, interesting use of paper texture! I wonder how you managed some of the shapes with the pressure on the stylus
here's mine for today :) hopefully less 'stiff;' than my previous attempt. There's a little problem with the eyes when I reverse the picture, I don't know if it's very obvious to others when you first see it? I thought I'd spoil the thing if I kept tweaking around too much.

I really screwed this one up. Trying angled head poses in the mirror is not a good thing. I think I hit two different head angles at the same time on this one, which = CRAP!
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod95.jpg
Oblio - Talk cryptic much eh? lol! Sorry, I'm doing crappy and horrible, all rolled up into one tasty bun with a side of crap. How are you?
My last one I didn't like, I really pooched the eyes on it. Just like this recent one. I think I travelled back in time 2 months. I need to start observing better when doing these, I'm getting lazy on the eyes.
Ilex - Nice job on these, they feel fuzzy though, I don't think your getting hard enough edges on some of these. A good mix of soft and hard edges will really liven up your SP's.
Fab - Good man, don't tweak too much. Or else it'll end up like my crap. Whenever you start to hit areas 2 or 3 times over, they lose the flow that the rest of the piece had and they just turn out looking wrong, no matter how much you try to fix it. So get it right from the start :D Something I'm guilty of not doing at all :(
Retro - Some individual likenesses are starting to show through, second one has some weird angles and proportions issues. I think the nose on the second one is what did it.
Elwood - No pic :(
Lionel - Nice work, try using the hatch to conform to face curvature though, it may help to give some form and pop to the features and valleys of the face. The colored one turned out very nice.
Benzo - Nice work, interesting texture, the nose form is bugging me though. The rest of it is nice.
Jhibbs - There you are :D Post again, please.
Night everyone, may be hard for me to post for the next 3 days, but I will be doing SP's, so expect a nice, new steamy batch on your doorsteps later this week.

ilex still look like an elf, teehee ;) glad you find that sp not so 'plastic' then, I'll probably try more of that, I love to keep my lines, the reason I get less expressive is partly due to the fact that I still dont feel confident with proportions it;s still a fight each sp to get something that looks like me sometimes after the first 10 min I'd want to throw it away because there's no likeness at all, then I cool down and start looking more, aligning features vertically and horizontally till it's 'ok'. I've found that confidence actually plays a part in it, if you stress about it you dont pay attention to what you do and proportions get bad, if you forget about achieving something, then the 'flow' kicks in and eventually it comes out :)
btw for your last sp, Id say there's a lack of feel of the head shape on the back of the head, could be the short neck or the shape of the hair, colorscheme is nice, maybe a bit dark around the nose if you squint your eyes
retro002 last sp I can see someone there, the shape of the nose, and the mouth on the 2nd, the 2nd is nice. As for patience, I find it relaxing, after the first 20 min or so, when I forget about achieving something and well, basically shut up my mind :) As for my last comments on line, I think 'Bridgeman's Drawing from Life' explains much better than me. I didnt htink much of his book at first, becuase his drawings are very 'rough' and yet, they do tell a lot, he explains very well how 'contour' lines describe the forms that make the anatomy, and how these forms combine together etc.
blackhawk yup difficult angle, think you overlooked the 3/4 proportions on that one (larger on one side)
elwood no pic :/
sorry if I didnt reply to your sp, I m just lazy, I try to comment on different people every now and then
I talk too much

ye.. we're rollin...
hey... it's almost x-mass.. i've been talking to Santa all evening and... damn we had some nice tea and a great chat.. i've even help him pack few things (and let me tell you some of you have prepared some pervert gifts :D) but in the end.. he told me somethng like:
"oh.. and let that kid that lies in you get out a little"
http://members.fortunecity.com/afantana/23Dec.jpg
@benzo - whoa - last one.. wow - lovely color & so. I don't remember seing a very realistic SP from you. I remember some nice renders but your proportions seem always ... exagerated. I mightbe wrong though. Anyway.. fuck em :D
@eclipsen - hey.. welcom to the sick club (gorup hug) - try to dig a thread called "schoolyard" in the drawing from life sector - the great Jon Foster has some advice for SP's. Also Andrew (android) has a tutorial - dig into the depths of SPOD .
Looking for the next one.
@blackhawck - LOL - what a cute SP :D nice rendered nose :p how am i? well.. i love x-mass - i'm not sure if a've mentioned around but.. i have a kid (adopted from the street) and also this x-mass a little girl has joined my house and i'm busy hiding presents until THAT night, and stuff. Real fun. I'm dangerously low on money but.. hey.. i'll get back on track soon.. right? :desperate: :D
@retro#number - ah.. the little Bethoven of the pencil... put that smoke away :p :D
@ilex.. Ilex.. please.. don't be sad.. i love to see you smile... It's just that your sp's are so loose and so.. "painted" that it's hard for me to dig you under - i find your mood, your dreams, your slow desire.. but i can not find you.
I would like to see one where you focus on the eyes and work on them until ther stare back to you.. then.. work some more and unveil yourself.. it would be a great pleasure for me to meet you there
@fab - mr. loose tone/sharp lines - you forgot to draw some guide lines and your face just twisted. In the begining i used to draw marks on the mirror in order to place my head on the same spot.

ilex- good work!
fab- your last two or three have been great, but this is my favorite. it is only lacking in some areas you rushed, like the the zig-zags on your chin and cheek. have more patience in those marks and it will make so much difference. btw- i've been to brussels...there's nothing like being drunk as you walk into the Grand Place at night lighted up to music for the first time:chug:

Fab - Yeah, I screwed up my conte one. My head shifted in the middle of establishing the shapes and it was crappy the rest of the way.
Eclipsen - Welcome. Be mindful of feature placement. I'm guilty of the same sin in my portraits, it's just a matter of observing more carefully and making measurements to make sure everything is sticking together where it should be. Follow Oblio's suggestion and check out those two threads. I'll dig through Andrew's SP to find the demo thread for you. It's very helpful. Keep them coming.
Benzo - The texture on this one is sweet as hell. A very original rendering, almost like film burn spots peeking through in sections. Very sweet. Great job.
Ilex - Very nicely done. Seems like the nose and mouth are on a slightly different angle from the eyes. Other than that, excellent rendering. I think this is the first realistic try at a rendering that I've seen you do and it came out quite nicely. If I remember correctly, you said a month or two ago how you were incapable of doing realistic :D You've proved yourself wrong.
Oblio - I can definitely feel your exuberance in this SP. Just the way your head is perked up like a rabbit who just caught sight of a carrot. It's a great thing your doing bringing in kids and giving them a great Christmas. I hope the best for you man.
Tomorrow night may be slim for me. I'll try for a Santa SP, but I lost access to a scanner and painter for a few days, so this'll be rough. If I can't get to this thread tomorrow, I just want to wish everyone a Wonderful Christmas.

faB, its the uncut mustard colour that seems bleh to me, also the colour in the beard seems unrelated. The expression is cool though
eclipsen, welcome, realistic one this last one, how about some more tonal range in the face, the background seems too black
oblio, thank you for the prodding just what I needed
ilex, beautiful, don't be sad this one sings albeit a sad song
benzo, interesting different style experiments I like the colour and shape one best.
blackhawk, loose and ORANGE. I love it! now that isn't a very useful comment is it, maybe tone down the texture on the smooth parts of the face a bit to help with volume,

@fab- here we go :D very nice tilt there - small problems though: 1 - your hair is looking towards me!! :D 2 - nose bridge a bit off - right between the eyes. 3 - try working the eyes a bit more - also eyeline is diferent from the nose, mouth and chin line. 3 - a bit too saturated (the color mia was talking - but here is a matter of taste & mood)
@eclipsen - mia is right - work that value range.

Tonight I tried to concentrate on masses, going from large to small, and trying to get a maximum with a minimum of 'paint'. Started with Oil Pastel at a large size, and blocked in the head shape, then used smaller and smaller brush size, trying to avoid getting in details too early. Value-wise it's pretty bad though.
http://web.wanadoo.be/def46/img-posts/painter/autoportrait-20021226.jpg
ilex, miasmak, Oblio great work you 3! The effort shows!
miasmak colour version is not so bleh ;) I like, main problem I think is the sides of the face getting a bit confused with the background value wise, for the lower part., the contrast gives it a little punch
Oblio before-last is one of your 'sharpest' ;) feels solid. Your sp's feel a little bit caricatured still.
ilex looks good, lacks a bit value range I think. It feels like hte features are painted on top of the face, a little flat. Look for planes described by the light, & paint them to get the feel of volume.

I feel like I am only drawing self portraits at the moment, am I curable doctor ?!?
ilex, the red one is the best one so far, I like the bits in the cheek with the bit more saturation. good volumes on the upper lip.
faB, mmm the forehead isn't looking so big anymore, I think the proportions on this one is pretty good, the colour isn't as pukey as the bleh one either. The ear seems a bit low, but it may be the angle of the face, also the coarse highlights on the forehead don't fit the otherwise clean feel.
Oblio, now you have the big forehead on your last one. I like the one before the last one for it's intense expression. Of course it is better if I measure, it's just that after I have done all the measureing I sometimes don't have the energy/interest left to work on the pic anymore (excuses.excuses)

Excellent work everyone. How was everyone's Christmas? I have a few I did over my hectic Christmas holiday that I will scan in and post tomorrow. This is just one I did tonight as I finally got on my old machine back again :D

Ilex - Wonderful work. I'm extremely impressed with the ones you've done the last few days. Great job.
Oblio - Great work. Forehead is getting on the large side on a few of these, but your persistence is admirable.
Redon - Welcome, always good to see a new face, especially since this forum has slowed down quite a bit. My only crit is the face seems too fuzzy. Some hard edges in this piece will help give the eye a place to hold onto.
Fab - I really liked your last two. Blocking in your pieces has really helped to bring a more painterly feel to them. Great job.
Mia - Your last one is great. The measuring has really helped to pull your face together.
Zipp - Drawing while in the car... hmmm, sounds like fun. Hopefully you can make a return soon and get back to portraits more consistently again.

welcome rusty, redon
rusty, can't see anything
redon, ZBrush huh, I've always found Zbrush difficult to control, but that's just me I think, bit blurry I thought it was Jpg compression problem at first, otherwise good stuff
ilex, fantastic, you captured a luminous skin quality and texture, yeah freckles groovey freckles, it makes this one. as for the brushes, yes they are custom, made by gekitsu, who posts here too. You can find them and more at idd http://www.critical-depth.com/painter/
blackhawk, I'd say good stuff, but I've seen you do better though ...
Oblio, interesting angle doesn't look like you've used a photo
Zipp, keep going, perhaps more varied line quality to get more interst

Sorry I missed last night. I was drawing hands for 4 hours and I lost track of time.
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod98b.jpg
I could have done a lot better with the colors on this one, it flattened out, especially around the eyes.
Oblio - I like these last two, especially the nose on the very last one. Congrats on your GF's 21. I turn 21 in about 3 months. Geesh, this been the slowest year for me. Oh, Oblio, to answer your question from my last SP, I used the oil pastel brush.
Mia - I always try to do better, I'm never satisfied with my work though, I keep finding new things wrong with each one. This last one looks like a good start, you should finish through with it and use your imagination to liven it up a bit.
Daarken - Thanks Daarken :) Throw a few more SP's our way, come on, you know you want to :D
Rustry - Awesome man, I really like this one a lot.
Ilex - Nice job, the left eye became a tad large though, Watch out for size and proportions, concentrate and be mindful of what your seeing. I need to do the same thing :D
MindCandyMan - I'm getting a red X bud, plus an MSN communities box keeps popping up.
Great job everyone.

i've been sick the past few days, finally got around to painting again, i'm tryin really hard to get back to one a day!
http://www2.trincoll.edu/~czoppi/drawings/dec30.jpg
this was done in painter 7 with captured bristle, but i'm still getting a somewhat muddy feel in my paintings...i don't get it!! its driving me crazy!
blackhawk: awesome portraits! they look fantastic! the red one you posted a day ago is awesome! what brush are you using in painter? your paintings have a similar brush look.
mindcandy: looking good, you've done a great job with wrapping those pink lights around the head and adding the reflections, gives it nice depth
oblio: i like the sunglasses! cool stuff
ilex: great style in your latest portrait, but the left eye looks a little bit too big compared to the other and the rest of the face.

Blackhawk, thanks for the vote of confidence on the previous one this morning the light was the same again. Your sp looks accurate, I like the purple shirt. Since the colour in the background is so saturated, the face seems a bit insipid and my attention is drawn to the background instead, this may be just me.
ZippZopp, good to hear you aren't too sick to draw, I have found muddiness happening when I blend too much. Maybe try to do one using only 2 contrasting colours say blue and orange and their value ranges.
Ahh Mindcandyman is back, form the borg this time, like the purple highlights on the face and the nose
Rusty, I could see your previous one with IE but not Opera and a can't see your second one, the first one looks verrry good considering it was done with a mouse. Corel makes Painter under the label Procreate. go to www.procreate.com

miasmak - that one is awesome. One of your best ones in my opinion. Great job.
zipp - I like the lighting on this last one you did. Try starting with a larger canvas and working down from there...work zoomed in and then pull out. See if that helps
blackhawk - This one is awesome. I love how you use the sharp chalk tool...makes it look very painterly. I love the muted colors you used for the skin tones...drop in a dark complimentary color for the background to make your portrait pop out. Awesome work though bro...I saw your mercenary sketch too...do more of those hehe...I've only seen your portraits.
rusty - Nice man...I am really drawn to the eyes in this portrait. Great pose too...good job
oblio - I love the last one you did...has a great 3d feel to it...good job.
daarken - let's see some man. I want more lift off paintings...you rock at those.
ilex - Your self portraits have been really really good lately. Great job.

HAPPY NEW YEARS!
Whew, what a year. I can honestly look back and say that this was the most productive year of my life artistically. I give my thanks to everyone on here who have helped me so far and who have inspired me, especially a big thanks to Andrew. I don't think I would have seen the growth I've seen without the inspiration he provided with a Self-Portrait a day. So to you Andrew, if your reading this, I thank you and a happy new year to you, I hope all will be well for you and everyone else on here in 2003.
Time to start the New Year with a sputter :D

ZippZopp - Get your butt in gear and start cranking one a day again. (I've been lazy to though :P) For the last few SP's, I've been using the Oil Pastel brush, actually 3 versions of it that I modified and saved to give me a different look and use. I really like the oil pastel a lot, it's becoming my favorite brush to work with. Nice job, watch out for the abrupt hairline though, soften it up a bit.
Mia - BEAUTIFUL! My favorite of yours, hands down. After seeing this one I just had to try watercolors on mine today. It was a fun experiment, I was lost the entire time I did it :D but it was fun nonetheless. As for my last SP, I noticed the same thing, as others have suggested, I needed to get a different color on that BG, it bled into the face too much and kind of obscurred it. Lesson learned :D
MindCandy - Lol, my mercenary was a hideous monstronsity. After posting it, I was saying to myself "Why the hell did I just post that?" :D Nice job on your last one, I see it now. Are you still submitting to the T-Dome? Welcome back man and let's start seeing you regularly again.
Oblio - Awesome, thanks man. I don't know if I deserve 2 sp's from you :), I've only given you one. I'll do a holiday present for you later. Thanks bud.
Lionel - Welcome back :D. Watch out for the hatching on the face, the direction of the hatches is obscuring the form of the face, try one where you use the hatch to follow the form of the face and see what it gives you.
Ilex - A very seductive smirk on this one. Very nicely done. The tip of your nose may be upturned too much though, other than that, great job.
Night everyone, and again, Happy New Years.

ilex, wow this one is so cool too, love the colours magenta being one of my personal favourites and the green clip and earings. Also lovely subtle eye highlights and the freckles are featured again.
blackhawk, those water colours can be a bitch, one brush stroke with the wrong brush and your computer turns into a snail on sleeping pills. You did pretty well though the green in the highlight seems wrong can't put my finger on it. Try this link for friendlier water colour brushes (http://kaburaya.pobox.ne.jp/eng/7waterbrush.htm) and some info.
lionel, good to see you again keep going
Oblio, is melting thanks for pulling me into this forum in the first place
thankyou everyone for teaching me things by example or comment, for pointing out mistakes and for prodding when I was getting lazy. enough mushyness on to 2k3 may it be a great one.:chug:
